RE: NOT A GOOD DEAL

RE: NOT A GOOD DEAL
Looking on the site you posted, it "appears" as if just about all the suspension parts, shock mounts, body mounts , etc are identical to Savage stuff, but in aluminum. It actually looks a Savage built with Integy parts, really. Some of them have SH .25's which just a rebadged XTM 24.7, which is another very good engine.

RE: NOT A GOOD DEAL
When looking for parts, it will help if you also look for Schumacher Raptor parts, because it is the same truck. That truck has a SH .28 engine, which is better and stronger engine than either the Savage X or XL engines. I think a lot of things from a Savage fits them. I know I've seen people say they've put HPI 3 speeds in them and I know a HPI wheelie bar fits them. If you can figure out if some of the common wear parts from a Savage will fit it, it may be worth keeping. At the very least, you have a good engine, so if you can get it side by side with someone else's Savage, you be able to tell if the suspension parts, etc with swap over. Take it to a Hobby Shop and see if you can compare it to a display model.

RE: Bigger Engine; What would happen?
The 5.9 is not an upgrade. It is bigger, but it is not stronger and way more of a hassle. Like jbooker said, the LRP 28 or 30, Losi 454, Picco 28 are up better, stronger engines.

RE: Dynamite Big Red Monster .28 on my Savage XL 5.9
ORIGINAL: ncostes Bought a used Savage 5.9 XL, engine was blown, would have needed a new piston, sleeve, wrist pin, con rod and OWB, over $100 of stuff. LHS guys sold me a Dynamite .28 Big Red for $139. I still have the original pipe and header. Broke the engine in today in the truck. It had nice power, but two things I noticed, and I'm wondering if anyone else is running this engine in their XL can help me out 1. It's loud. Very loud. 2. There is fuel leaking between the engine exhaust port and the header. It really seems like it needs a shorter muffler or something. When the muffler is on the spring, it pushes back some and since only a spring is retaining the header to the engine, it seems to be a poor seal. For anyone using this engine or something similar what have you done? Do you use another pipe or header? Do you cut the spring and bend it up or make your own? Someone here recommended a Dynamite or Ofna 086 pipe - I'd definitley like to have this be more quiet, it makes my revo sound like an electric... Edit: Also - did anyone else using this engine have to file down the bottom right bulge of the backplate to get a good gear mesh? Without filing that plastic down (the thing that bulges around the screw), I couldn't get a decent gear mesh, it was wayyy to tight (couldn't push the engine far enough right). Thanks
It sounds like you could use a header seal and spring. The spring is probably stretched because the 5.9 case is bigger than the .28. The Dynamite 086 is a significantly quieter than the polished HPI XL pipe, and performs better. It comes with a different header as well, and better on topend than the XL pipe.

I think its in need for a better mill and maybe the lst2 upgrade. i have a fresh f4.6 i may stuff in it. whats this big red engine everyone talks about...is it good...maybe someone with expierience could give me a comparison to the f4.6 (NOT THE K4.6, big difference). Well anyways nice truck pal and maybe the thread will retrack itself.......-scott
The Dynamite 28 is way stronger than the f4.6. There's really no comparison. In fact, The silver/teal headed Mach 427 will spank a f4.6 in comparable trucks. The f4.6 has a smidge more low end right off idle than the 427, but the 427 revs way higher and has a lot stronger mid range. In a side by side race on trucks with the same size tires and spur/clutch combos, the 427 will always win in a race,

RE: engine upgrade for savage xl
13/52 is going to be nothing but a wheelie monster! It will wind out really fast, and will make the truck really limited IMO. Why so low? Good engines are capable of producing more bottom end than you keep on the ground and still have good top end with higher gears.

RE: Recommend engine/exhaust for Savage 5.9 XL
ORIGINAL: ncostes Thanks for the quick reply. In terms of the exhaust header and pipe, assuming I go with the Mach 454 recommended, what would you recommend for the exhaust header and pipe? Quieter is better for us running in our neighborhood. Thanks again for your time.
The Dynamite or OFNA 086 is probably one of the quietest pipes I have and it performs the best on the Mach 454. The only thing is that they are a little pricer than a stock HPI polished pipe, but worth the extra money, IMO. The Mach 454 will still run plenty god with the stock HPI polished pipe though.

RE: Recommend engine/exhaust for Savage 5.9 XL
ORIGINAL: ncostes I picked up a used Savage 5.9 XL that has a blown engine (piston shattered) and no exhaust header or muffler. I've read through some of the other threads regarding "upgrade" engines etc. I'm not looking for a better engine, I'm looking to complete the truck in the most economical way, but with decent parts. I could probably get away w/a piston + sleeve for the 5.9 engine but that's like $90, the HPI engine exchange is like $179. The stock muffler & header looks like $38 or so, I don't recall. Any suggestions? I've seen people mention Picco 28, LRP or something 28, OS30, etc. I'm not looking for more power or anything, I'd normally rebuild the stock engine but I've read some complaints about the HPI 5.9 engine so I'm looking for other economical solutions. Thanks for yoru time.
For the money, the Losi Mach 454 would probably be the cheapest good engine you can get. It made by SH, and basically the same engine as the LRP Z28R, SH .28, Dynamite Mach 28, XTM 457, etc. You can pick them on ebay usually for $120 - $130. It is very good engine, and is way better than the 5.9. Even the F4.6 is a better stronger engine than the 5.9, but they about the same price as the 454, and the 454 is a lot better engine, IMO, and definitely stronger. You can spend 30 or 40 and get a Picco 28 for around 170 and it is the about strongest engine you can get for less than $200. Whichever way you go, you are going to end up with a better engine than the 5.9 by default. On the pipe, once again ebay will probably be your best bet on the best price.

RE: Corrosion inside crankcase
ORIGINAL: savagecommander if the motor was in a box the cardboard helped absorb any residual moisture. nitro fuel attracts moisture and will corrode aluminum. i wouldnt use 1200 paper on the crank unless youre staying away from the shaft. thats actually where the seal is, and all you have to do is take that a few thousandths out, and youll have an airleak. crunchy bearings = bad. change them. pick up a metal shielded one for your front. RE: Corrosion inside crankcase
I've pulled out engines and I ran them after sitting for several years and I have seen no corrosion. I put my old XTM 24.7 on an old chassis and cranked it recently after about 4 years of it being in the box, and there was no corrosion. I did see the crusty dried up old fuel, and new fuel makes about as good of a cleaner as anything.

RE: Think it'll hold
ORIGINAL: llkoolskillet Personally I have run the S/S kit "crap" the integy Kevlar kit "OK" and the stock red fiberglass brakes "love them" I use the hitec 645mg servo for both steering and throttle/brake. As we all know it's a great servo for a great price. Yes I've had the red disk either break off or fall off or shatter but when put on correctly they last the longest. I enjoy doing high speed runs in my XL and then slam on the brakes. I haven't adjusted them for 2 gallons and I get all four to lock up. Truth is get on eBay get a set of each for cheap as hell and try them out to find which you prefer
I guess it boils down to driving style. I can get several gallons out the SS brakes, but only a couple runs out the red brakes. The SS brakes better and don't require as much duration for me. I can turn the wheel and tap the brakes with SS kit and it pitches the truck where I want to go.

RE: Think it'll hold
ORIGINAL: SLAYERDUDE If you run a cracked engine plate you are asking for a stripped spur.[;)] The SS brakes are the steel discs yes? CRAP IMO! I love the red fiber brakes.
See, I feel exactly the opposite. The red fiber brakes have been horrible for me. I use my brakes very aggressively to set the truck in turns, and the red brakes just disintegrate very fast if you have a good servo. I have had one of the discs brake on several occasions and then I no brakes at all. I've only got them left on one truck, and I'm going to tear it down and put a set of SS brakres on it before I run it again. The pic below is after about 3 runs. I hate them! -lol

I always use a 21/25 roto start housing and drill and tap the smaller pattern in the factory backplate. The other option is to use the backplate from the XTM 24.7. RE: Savage XL Engine Upgrade
SLAYERDUDE, the reason some of us are 5.9 haters is because we've had MUCH better, and I hate to see people duped (like I was)into buying such an expensive truck with a lackluster engine. It would seriously be worth a 2 or 3 week wait to get a better engine on a new truck - at least to me. When I first bought my first 21, I was totally satisfied with it. So much so that when I wore out the first one, I even bought a 2nd one new. I didn't see any need for anything more until I had more. I saw all the hype about the XTM 24.7 being so much stronger than the 21, so I tried one - and WOW! I kicked myself for ever buying a new 21. When the new 25 came out, and I bought one and immediately realized that it was nothing compared to 24.7, so I bought a Orion WASP 28. It was the biggest POS of a motor I've ever owned - even to this day. When that didn't work out, I bought a Mach M26 and loved it. I ran it forever and later bought an Axial 28 because of all the hype around them at time. Once again, I was left disappointed. It wasn't a POS like the WASP, but it was nothing special and wasn't any stronger than the plain old blue head Mach M26. From that point forward I pretty much became a SH/LRP/Mach fanboy because I had been disappointed by other brand engines I'd had. Until, I bought the Clocked Picco, I bought nothing but SH based engines for years. I've had 2 LRP's (Z28R spec 3 and the ZR30), an 8 port SH 28, a boat load of Machs (26's, 427's, 454, 28's). By the time I got my XL, and I already had a 21 and 25 with aftermarket engines, a relatively new X with the F4.6. I bought into the hype of XL and based it on the fact that X was pretty stout, and I figured the 5.9 would at least be a step up from the 4.6. Well, it wasn't. The f4.6 did everything better - low end, top en , tuneability, run time. The 5.9 was a hot running slug compared to anything I had and it was my most expensive truck. I gave it chance hoping it would get stronger as I got more time on it, but it never did. In less than 2 gallons, the front bearing was shot. A Mach 427 powered truck will skull drag a 5.9 truck all day long, and it just pissed me off that it was so bad. That's the reason I give engine recommendations based on my experience. If I can save someone from spending hard earned money on a bad engine when there's a better one out there I at least want them to know about it. If you are happy with your 5.9 that's cool. Run it until it croaks. The only thing I was would recommend is when it dies, try to find someone with some of the other engines and see how they run. If you are like I was with that 21, you have idea what you are missing. BTW, I still have most of the engines I've bought. I sold my 25 to my brother and also sold my Z28R to him when the ZR30 came out (and I wish I hadn't.) I sold my Mach 427 and a 454 to a buddy, and sold a couple Axials but I have most of the rest of them. I still have both 21's, the XTM 24.7, and my first Mach 26. I drug a box out the shop, and took I pic of all the ones not on trucks the other day. I didn't realize how many I still had -lol One second thought, maybe you should never change engines! I have spend a few bucks on engines over the years. Of course they are only like $50 a piece if you ask my wife!;)
