RE: Larger Revolver
Perhaps I missed this earlier in the thread but.....did anyone notice that the R70 on Tower Hobbies has new landing gear??? Or maybe it just looks like it is straight gear.

RE: Larger Revolver
Flight times are short but where I primarily fly we take turns so there is only ever one person flying at a time. I've got three batteries for each of my planes and it only takes me 15 minutes to recharge. I really don't have to wait between flights. Actually, even w/o taking turns I can fly almost non-stop. I've got two chargers and one of them is a four port charger. I do like that my 30cc gasser can fly seemingly forever on a single tank. I looked at some electric motors on HobbyKing that I could use in the R70. It would probably only cost me about $100 including shipping to convert. One last tuning attempt this weekend before I make my decision. One eBenefit is extremely low wing loading. My 60" Extra is only 16oz/sq.in. and my 48" MXS is only 14oz/sq.in. Combine ultra light wing loading with 2:1 power:weight and there is nothing you can't do.....except fly for 10 minutes straight! :)

RE: Larger Revolver
Admittedly, I fly mostly electrics which all have a 2:1 power ratio. But, they all are using the recommended power systems so zero modifications were needed. I might have a different opinion if I actually liked to build. I barely have the patience to assemble an ARF. I just want to fly.

RE: Larger Revolver
A single step up I understand. It's when the engine upgrade is so severe that you have to replace all the hardware, reinforce the firewall, replace kit hinges, etc that it doesn't make sense to me. At that point you might as well just but a plane that is actually designed for the engine you are trying to use. ARF's are designed to handle certain structural loads. Using an OP engine will put loads on the airframe that it wasn't designed to handle. You could say that it becomes a safety issue at that point. I'm the safety officer at one of my clubs and I can't tell you how many OP planes I've seen turned into tooth picks.
ORIGINAL: wjcalhoun Mike Thanks for the details. At 19.5# (and book weights are always optimistically low - she will probably build more like the 20.5) performance will not be 'spirited' with the DLE55. My AW Ext300 weighs in at 17#15oz and is fine, but a plane 2-2.5# heavier; don't know. I have another Extra260 that is 1.5# ligher than the AW bird, and she is noticably more nimble, so another 2# in the other direction with the R90 will likely be an issue. The wing area, control surface area, cubic wing loading, etc will be interesting numbers to get. I was only half joking about the DA-60. Mintor 60 or 75 might be other good options.
The DLE-20 puts out 14lbs of thrust. The R70 weights 9.5lbs depending on build. The gives a power to weight ratio of roughly 1.47:1 The DLE-55 will put out 30lbs of thrust with the right prop. Even if the R90 hits 20.5lbs that is that is a power to weight ratio of roughly 1.46:1 How will the DLE-55 not be spirited in the R90 when the DLE-20 in the R70 is very spirited? Sorry, not trying to be an ass. Guess I'll never understand the desire to overpower an air frame.

RE: Larger Revolver
I'm not surprised that the new Revolver has a 90" wingspan. The R70 has a really large wingspan considering the fuse size. It's only a few inches shy of my 30cc Sbach. The Sbach has a much larger presence because of the fuse size. I'd like a top down view of the new Revolver to see the size of the control surfaces. It's definitely at a really good price point when you factor in the $50 off you would get as a TH club member.

RE: Larger Revolver
I've had a 60 in two different R70's for about two years or so now. It's got plenty of power for the type of flying I did with it. It flew great as a sport plane with that engine. Actually, it was surprisingly quick. The guys at the field couldn't believe it was just a 60. The airframe is so slick that is carries speed really well. Now, if I convert it to electric I'll probably give it ePower closer to a .90 nitro. I've gpt a new cowling that I almost cut for my 60. Think I'll hold on to it for a bit till I decide what to do with the power. If I'm lucky I'll get it working this coming weekend. I really miss flying this plane!!!

I really didn't try much tuning tonight to be honest. I got to the airfield around 6:00 so I didn't have much time. Fired it up and tuned the HS needle and tried to tried the lost speed rpm's. After a few attempts I gave up and switch to my electric so I'd at least get one flight before sundown. I have a spare Super Tiger 60 I'll switch in this week. Hopefully I'll have better luch this weekend.

RE: Larger Revolver
It's a Super Tiger 60. To be fair, I need to inspect the fuel system. It might not be the engine. It won't hold idle properly. You can hear idle speed up and down for a minute or two before it dies. I've tried two different carbs in it with no luck. I'm really kinda liking that electrics don't require tuning. They pretty much either work or they don't. I do miss the sound and the flight times of a nitro\gas!

But, judging by other 50cc planes , could be bigger. This is COOL. Thank you for listening, Great Planes. Looks like they've improved the landing gear, too. Cant' wait to get a hold of one of these. Who's going to be first on this thread to own the Giant Revolver? (aka ''G-Rev'' for now??)
I'm really curious if it is a sport flyer or if they designed it more for 3D. Tempting either way. Wish they had it in the blue scheme like the R70.
ORIGINAL: SigMan if you convert to electric instead of of a 20cc gasser you ill be making a mistake.
Have you ever actually flown electrics? There are pros and cons to gas, electric, and nitro. It has gotten to the point that it is really a personal preference. I have a gas plane, two nitros, and three electrics. Guess which planes get the most airtime? The electrics. They simply fly better than anything out there. The throttle response and light wing loading of a properly made electrinc can't be beat. I'm actually getting tempted to convert my Revolver to electric. My nitro engine has given me nothing but trouble and I can convert to electric for cheaper than I can convert to a DLE-20. Since I already have chargers and batteries I can use it is an easy decision for me.

RE: Larger Revolver
I'm having trouble getting my Revolver running again. I still can't get the engine to run right. It doesn't want to idle for very long and sometimes dies when I transition from high to low speed quickly. It's a Super Tigre and I'm begging to regret not getting an O.S. engine. I have an O.S. engine in an old nitro car that I have run in 3+ years. Tonight I decided to get the car out to work on it. The pull start was pretty tight but once the fuel starting flowing it loosened up quickly. I'm assuming it was gummed up a little from sitting for so long....probably with fuel in it. Anyway, I put the glow starter on it and it started on the FIRST pull! Guess this is why O.S. engines are so expensive. I'll have to get help from one of the experts at the field to help me get the Super Tigre running right. We have a club picnic this weekend so hopefully I can get it running before then.

RE: Larger Revolver
I haven't flown my Revolver in over a year. It's nothing to do with the plane itself. It's the nitro. I've gone mostly electric and I haven't felt like dealing with the fuel, tuning, starters, etc. Well, I'm gonna fly it tomorrow. Since I haven't flown it in forever it was never set up for my DX8. I set up everything tonight. Charging my field box now. The only thing I need now is fuel. Giuess I'm heading to the LHS (45mins away) to pick up fuel tomorrow morning. How much is a gallon of 15% going for now? Someone said it's close to $30 now. It was only $18 when I bought some early last year (or was it the year before that?) Really looking forward to getting this thing back in the air. It was such a joy to fly and always looked great in the air!

RE: Larger Revolver
Even full symmetrical wings will gain altitude above half throttle. The incidence of the wings is what creates "lift". You actually want this to happen. It's how you are supposed to properly land. You control your altitude with the throttle and your speed with the elevator. It is the opposite of what you would logically think it should work.

RE: Larger Revolver
I thought elevator input was required to maintain level flight in pretty much any throttle position other than mid throttle? I've always been told to trim for level flight at mid throttle. Anything above mid throttle should cause your plane to gradually rise. Anything below mid throttle should cause the plane to slowly lose altitude.

I'm pretty sure the needle must have moved. I just checked and it was 1 1/2 turns out from closed which is about where it should be set. I'm pretty sure it was at 1 1/2 turns last time I ran it...at the start of the flight anyway. I put a mark so I will know for sure if it moves next time.

RE: Larger Revolver
Your field sounds exactly like one of my fields. It is also built on top of an old dump. Our landing strip is at the top of the biggest hill in the dump. There are rings of forest follow by rings of flat driving paths. We do have one hill that is as tall as our landing area. I've seen several planes overshoot the landing area and lawn dart into the the hill. A guy did it with a Habu 32 last weekend. ESC overheated and he had too much speed left on his approach. The nose of the jet went about six inches deep into the hill. He too was lucky though. Minor cracks in the paint. It didn't look like the fiberglass was damaged at all.

The switch itself is usually the failure point not the battery. The vibrations seem to damage he switch in a fairly short amount of time. A friend of mine has to replace the Rx switch in his DLE-20 powered plane every couple of months.

I run with dual receiver batteries and it drains each of them more-or-less evenly. One is plugged into the battery port and the other is on a Y split with the throttle servo. Works flawlessly...so far.

Just my opinion. Please keep us posted. Post a video if you can so we can see how the .61 flys her. Ive never seen this plane flown with that motor. I dont think anyone on here has used anything less than a .91. Jeremy
I've been flying my R70 with a Super Tigre 60 for about two years now. You aren't going to 3D with it but that isn't what this plane was designed to do. Vertical is limited but I can do pretty much anything I'd expected to be able to do with a sport plane. I can even knife edge it and gain altitude...slowly. I think it really depends on what kind of flying you realistically want to do. This airframe is so slick that it doesn't take much to get it moving. The guys at the club are stunned watching it fly after I tell them it's a 60.

A malfunctioning switch is one of the top 5 causes of a crash. A lot of.guys with expensive planes run with two Rx batteries each on their own switch. Double redundancy is nice to have. My 30cc Sbach isn't much bigger than the R70 and I run with three switches and three batteries. One switch and one battery are dedicated to the ignition.
