RE: How to take ding out of wing tip?
agreed tim, i have seen and heared of some real horror stories regarding ARF planes, my worry is for the newer members of this hobby, fir E.G if i buy a ARF plane or you buy one, we know enough to check it over, and change the crappy bits in the hope of making it a air worthy plane.. a new pilot or a new person to the hobby will not have the added bonus of knowing this and will go and fly it strate from the box [:@], and i have seen this done more than once, that is what worrys me :(.. as for cafeenmans decorative inlays, i have yet to try it yet (got to get me a router :)) but i like what i see ;)

RE: How to take ding out of wing tip?
Yep this ARF/RTF war is getting nasty :D, the market has been flooded with thee things and i personly find it upseting, bacause so amy good builders are tossing there sanding block to one side and going for these things, as you say tim they do serve a purpose and i respect that, but its a shame we are seing less hand built (scratch built/kit built) planes at the field.. the old days of watching some stunning craftsmanship glide through the air is all but gone with the ARF's flying about (pardon the pun).. i must admit i have been tempted at times when other pilots are bringing a new plane every 3 weeks to the field and its taking me months to finnish my latest project, but the end result keeps me on track, i have had ARF planes and it just feels like a toy to me as i never built it, but when MY PLANE is up there i feel all warm and fuzzy (and damn scared im gona smash it to bits :)).... so as cafeenman said welcome to the ranks :) we need all the builders we can get here we are a dying breed :(, these forums are just grate and you will learn tons of stuff and there is always someone willing to help :) CafeenMan and minnflyer are a mine of information and arnt the only ones on here making us all better pilots/builders :) CafeenMan's building has....... well gave me a boost to better my building, his work is just mind blowing and his website is a super place for information so check it out ;)

RE: RC Hobby growth in Europe
i think the hobby shops are feeling the pinch of the internet and to hold there own they must get on the web too, being a webdesigner i have put 4 local hobby shops on the internet, one thing i ask of my customers is that they give me feedback on the sales, are they growing? and in what sector?.. from my point of view there will always be a place for the hobby shop but that "place" is getting smaller, E.I most people are buying kits and planes over the internet wich is a big drop in hobby shop sales but we are still using the LHS for the nicks and nacks, the point is the LHS will not survive if they are not on the internet :( the LHS i have put on the internet have ALL said its saved them from closing up shop, sales have rocketed on the larger item's like planes/car's boats and they more expensive extra's for example retracts... its been grate for busisness i can tell ya ;), plus 2 of the LHS asked if we could do a deal instead of cash :) wich i can handle all day, as long as i got enough other jobs covering the wages :)

RE: why not thumb on top rather than index and thumb
Cafeenman....
The reason it seems like that is because the only people who post pictures of their flying fields are those who have nice flying fields. Trust me, finding a decent field in the U.S. isnt' easy either. I read the UK scale modeling mags and they all look like you guys are flying from airport strips that are miles long. Yeah, I know it's not like that, but what you see isn't always reality
I guess your right never looked at it that way before, i just think tony blair and george bush should put more money into R/C flying clubs than war's [:D]... Flyboy....
I would have raised my hand, and made a motion to the floor to ask for the resignation of the chairman for the clubs sake. You don't need a club to have rules on what mode you fly. I know I wouldn't change if the club decided to make a rule to change to one or the other. I would fly on a dirt road before I would let them make rules like that stick. Just had to throw that in.
yepthat should have been what happened but we were all so PI$$ed with his attitude at the time we all stormed off and told him to stick "HIS" flying club, even some mode 2 guys walked too just because of the way he handled the situation.. the sad thing is i still keep in contact with some of the pilots and 3 of them havent flow since and left the hobby :(

RE: how to make the wings and fuse with balsa?
, but i like to scratch build Clam this plane you are talking about is a advanced plane as regards flying, i have flown for many yeas and i fly a lot of large warbirds and have flown some strange things but even with all that under my belt i think that would be a tricky plane to fly, if im reading you right you have no ailaron experiance?, well this just answer's your own question, you will throw it into the deck faster than you can say "ohhh damn".. as regards building, i was the same as you i was brought up around mechanics and building stuff, i and yes i did fall into RC building prety well but we ALL have to start at the begining, there is no short cuts, yes these basic kits are not hard to put together but there is a lot of things you will learn by putting together these simple kits, as for your money problem please dont think scratch building is CHEAPER! becasue its far from it, 90% of my plans are scratch built but i could of had the same size plane built it in half the time for lass money [8|] but i have a many kits under my belt to see me through and even now i scratch my head at some plans ;).... we aint picking on you, if we got a $ for every person that asks this question we would all be very rich here :)

RE: why not thumb on top rather than index and thumb
LMAO! Montague im afraid i agree with you but as i said it seems people like to but more rules around R/C every week, as i live in the UK finding a club is a pain in the ass, the one im with now ait all that grate and we have problems there but i just go when no one is there but me and my dad if at all possible.... it realy gets me down somtimes but then again i carnt blame the R/C community we have had a LOT of trouble with the public although i have NEVER been in a club were we have had any nasty accidents, just damn good crashes on our site ;) but we were fighting the local Council for exteneded flying times, so we were gathering a partition of all the locals saying they didnt mind the flying site and didnt cause them any problems, one lady we called on (who lived further out than most of the others) gave us some real trouble.. we asked if she would sign the partition saying that she did not object, she answerd "I didnt even know there was a flying club there but if i did i would have complained!!!!" and she did LOL and she only knew it was there becasue we told her [8|] britain is getting a pain in the ass to fly, philybaby and cartman have one of the best flying clubs i have seen in the UK loads of room :), i see you US guy with stips like heathrow and more flying space then a black hole but we are stuck with a damn postage stamp :( it can be fun trying to land some of the bigger stuff i can tell ya ;)

RE: why not thumb on top rather than index and thumb
Dennis
Rick, Why in God's name would a club care which Mode you fly?? Dennis-
basically if i decide to have a heart attack or get into trouble in some way and i fly mode 1 and the rest of the club fly's mode 2 we could have a problem, i can see this point if i tried to join a club that was strictly mode 2 for this reason, i have no problem with that and makes sense i suppose. our problem was that 80% of our members were "mode 1" so simple maths tell's me that if this rule was to be applied we should all change to mode 1 as the larger % of pilots were mode 1, but have a guess what mode the chairman flew on??? yup mode 2 [8|] plus the fact that there was always someone who flew on one or the other on flying days it was a large club, so the need for this rule was not needed in my opinion, as if i did decide to have a heart attack there would be someone there who fly's on my mode... all this led to some highly heated debates at the club meeting, but the chairman basically said "like it or lump it!!" he wasn't going to discuss the mater any further and made it clear HE WAS THE BOSS, so most of us left right there and then, this led the club to encounter funding problems and could not afford the site and strip so closed down 2 months latter all because of this A$$ holes need to feel power ;).. as for flying smoother with thumbs or thumbs and finger, its cobblers, i have been flying for some years now but if you said i had to fly with finger and thumbs i would fly like a first time pilot simple as that, and i think i speak for most of the R/C pilots on here that this is the case either way round, some pilots can do both and fly just as well, i can't so i fly the way i feel comfortable with... this is getting to be a problem with R/C flying of late, years ago it was a past time now people think they can rule you because your in a club, i fly for fun and a brake form the normal RULES of life not to have some guy breath down my neck if i fly a different mode or in a different way.... some guy once told me that if he see's me land with a dead engine again he would report me to the C.H.A.I.R.M.A.N LOL [8|] so when ever he is at the field now i always dead stick its great practice [:D] i wouldn't mind but he is still flying a trainer BADLY!!! lol

RE: why not thumb on top rather than index and thumb
i have always flown with thumbs on top, it just happened the first time i touched a tx and i felt comfortable that way, people that tell you that either way is wrong or right need help [;)], we all feel better doing things different ways, no way is the right way as long as YOU!!! feel comfortable with it.. they both have good and bad like everything else in life..... same thing with modes that people fly, my first club decided to apply a rule (after being a member for 2 years) that you HAD to fly mode 2 to be a member, i fly mode 1 and always will no matter what stuck up club chaiman says, some people say mode 1 is old now and all pilots fly mode 2, ok fine but i fly mode 1 and feel comfortable with that end of story [8|] EDIT... after reading my post, the part about the mode's sounds like im ranting [:o], sorry about that, i understand some clubs have this rule (and i can understand why but it was the way this chaiman applied the rule that 60% of the members had problems with :)

RE: how to make the wings and fuse with balsa?
we can help out, but i advise you get a kitt if this is your first plane... plans are mind bogling if you dont know what your looking at, and especialy if its a advanced plan, plus some plane makers are not as clear as we would like so even us experianced builders have to think about what is going on before putting glue to wood... if you are 110% sure you want to build this plane then we will help as much as we can, but first what is it? are we talking a trainer, warbird, scale what? some info would help us help you :) Wingspan.. engine size... plane name?... please dont say a b17 or a lancaster with a 95" wingspan ;) lol.... spend a good few days just looking at the plan, and pretend your building it (getting the idea how you would actualy put this thing together) if your talking about sheeting its not that hard but its still in a higher level of building, but if your talking about say rounded wing tips say like on a piper cub or somthing then the rounded shape is cut from sheet or block balsa, sanded to shape even further and then fitted to where ever ;) but i realy sugest you get a simple kit first, it will answer sooo many questions and give you that little bit of experience, making model aircraft is like building a lego set its more fun :)

RE: TOP FLITE P51 MUSTANG ENGINE
i refuse to use mechanical retracts now, i tried to save a few $ by going down this road once but it ended up costimg me double :(, maiden flight on my spit with mechanical retracts, they worked ok on the deck but once up the wheels jared half way up, i tried allsorts to get them to come back down or just go up, note this is the maiden flight and knew nothing of how the plane handled and im throwing it about trying to get these damn retracts to break free, cut a long story short i resigned my self to the fact that i had to belly land this with the wheels halfway up, result............. not good, ripped the underside of the wing to bits and damaged the nose, 3 weeks in the shop on repairs, i was so Pi$$ed i just tossed the retracts and got me some spring air retracts, not cheap but THEY WORK!! and they look a whole lot better ;)

hey juice tnx for the heads up, yea all my RCV's run rough at first, it took me about 4 tanks of fuel before she calmed down ;) good thing is they just get better and better with time, i have 6 RCV's now [:D] (rcv freak) 5 in planes and 1 ready to go into the latest project (folkKer DVII), the sound you get from these is just super and again over time they sound better, my hurricane has to be the best that roar's at ya LOL[:D].. and yea it was me that went through all the glow plugs, i thought it was the fuel at forst but a trip to the LHS they said it was pretty normal with em, 2-3 engines i had that with but the others wasnt so bad..... any updates on the b17's?
