RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
I have to go with the event director on this one. He prepared for a warbird exhibition, expecting everyone to bring planes in war paint, and he put it in the flyer. Guys who will go to the trouble of organizing an event deserve the support of everyone in the club. And if you want to have a warbird racer event, just organize one, publish the flyer, arrange for parking, vendors, transmitter impound (or specify 2.4G only), advertise it, get volunteers to help and have at it! Just be sure to let people know what you expect them to exhibit and fly. That's what clubs are for, mutual support. If you don't fly whizbangs, and someone wants to have a whizbang meet, you can still help with parking, or sell popcorn, or arrange a door prize drawing, or play music for them. The whizbang guy will help out when you have that racer event. Or so it seems to me. Dave Olson

RE: Model Aviation and Dogs
ORIGINAL: BarracudaHockey In short its up to the club. (and possibly any legal restrictions they are under) I can tell you from what happened at an event last year, gas engine + carbon prop + loose dog = bad
Boy, do I hear that! One of our late club members often brought his dog, on a leash, when he wasn't flying. I guess the dog needed a place to use for a bathroom. Oh well. For the most part, members are good about keeping dogs tied up at the field. Visitors, not so much. I wouldn't make a dog sit & listen to our engines (or on electrics, the prop whine.) Doesn't seem fair. Dave Olson

RE: Should a beginner buy a sealing iron?
ORIGINAL: 70x7 ....or can a clothes iron with a <a href=''http://www.amazon.com/Coverite-Pocket-Thermometer/dp/B000X4OLQ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345648792&sr=8-1&keywords=coverite+pocket+thermometer'' target=''_blank''>Coverite Pocket Thermometer do the trick? This will be my first balsa build, and I'm trying to keep initial costs to a minumum (but I also want to have a successful build).
Excellent, the infrared thermometer was the best thing to happen in covering in a long time. You can find them on sale at Harbor Freight some times. I use mine all the time, for more things than I ever anticipated. I covered my first wing with a clothes iron (Army guys can operate an iron almost as well as Marines.) When I started getting into the corners around the tail feathers, I decided a trim iron would be a good idea. You'll get there with a clothes iron, if you don't have a trim iron. Welcome aboard. RE: Answer please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ORIGINAL: jrcaster I have never tried a heat gun. I use a monokote iron and a hot glove. That way I can press the covering into the framework.
I'm with jrcaster on this one. There are good reasons, I'll try to explain. Heat softens the adhesive backing on the back of the covering. If you blow hot air over the covering, it will shrink and simultaneously loosen the adhesive at the edge - and in shrinking, the covering pulls the covering away from where it's adhered. Not really tightening the covering, just shifting it. Heat the covering in between ribs with a covering iron. The part you heat will shrink and the covering that's adhered to the wood around the edges does not loosen, since you don't heat it. Good luck, Dave Olson

RE: Hitec, how to program down elevator with low throttle
Sounds to me like you have too much engine down thrust. When you cut the power, you lose the down thrust. If that's it, put some shims under the bottom screws on your motor mount, to tilt the engine up. That may take a couple of different thicknesses to find the right one. Good luck Dave Olson

I should think you could get that used 8103 for considerably less than $150, but it might not have all the servos or a charger. If you see one, complete, I think they'd accept $150 in a heartbeat! Good luck, Dave Olson

RE: going to try instead of arf.
ORIGINAL: morgan175  hello please help suggest a kit that is easy and I mean easy ( cut and dry with directions) that will be my first build.  I want to feel that feeling you all say about when you have built it from the ground up.  Price does not matter.  Would a 60 be better then a 40.  please let me know your thoughts.  Dont care if it is a trainer or 3d just want something I did that is EASY.
I won't disagree with those who like the Sig SE and the Dazzler & Uproar. However, you ask about an easy build with directions, and that calls for something like the Sig LT-40 or the Balsa USA Student Trainer. Both have directions that are written for the novice. And, when you finish, you'll have a nice flying, big floater of a plane. Next time, try an SE or Uproar. Just my 2¢ worth, Dave Olson

RE: A new rogue pilot with questions
JetMech, Unless our friend is going to have an experienced instructor, I see no point in having a more efficient prop. It will keep him going slow, with the engine at full throttle. A good idea, when he forgets to pull back the throttle stick. As lots of beginners do. Since the plane will be going slow at full throttle, he'll need the extra lift from the flaps, at low speed. Conversely, he could do as countless others have - put on a good prop, make the plane slick and speedy, and slam it into the ground at full throttle before he has time to react. Not much of a learning experience. Just my opinion, results may vary. Best wishes, Dave Olson

RE: A new rogue pilot with questions
I'm going to suggest you keep the 3 blade prop, for the following reason. As Hydro Junkie said, the engine is a little difficult to keep tuned. To make that less important, run the engine at high speed. Then high air speed will be a problem, unless you use an inefficient prop - so use the 3 blade item. With that setup, you can learn about tuning the engine. You can run it wide open (as new folks tend to do) without reaching such high speed that you don't have time to react. And, actually, using the flaps (to keep your air speed down) is not such a bad idea. When you're more experienced, you can put the flaps up and put on a more efficient prop, and the plane will go faster, but at the moment that's not the objective. First, fly like you want (wide open throttle), use the flaps & brakes & inefficient 3-blade prop to keep your air speed down, and you'll have a better chance to learn things. Good luck, Dave Olson

RE: real flight G2
Hey, I'm using 2.5, still works! Not to be contrary, but if there's ever a good place to get used to using rudder with your left stick, it's on the sim. I encourage it! Just take off, get to altitude, and pull aileron & elevator to make a turn. You'll notice the nose of the plane is high. Add some rudder, you'll see the nose line up with the plane's line of flight. If you crash... restart! That's what sims are for! After about two sessions, you'll find yourself doing all sorts of rudder work, one wheel touch & go's, knife edge, etc. Good luck, Dave Olson

RE: Has there ever?
ORIGINAL: fliers1 RC Report use to print honest reviews on products, but the hard copy magazine is no longer in business. fliers1
True, they'd print honest reviews, from the perspective of an expert commenting on a product. About the worst comment I ever saw was "Can't recommend this for a beginner." I recall leafing through a lengthy review on a new Futaba computer radio with all the subprograms for settings. (This is when computer radios were fairly new.) The review had no negative comments. I found the screens unclear, the manual confusing, and the settings difficult, even after reading the review. The review commented on how to get the job done, again with the perspective of a seasoned RC pilot. The reviews were thorough and critical, but there was none of the dismissive tone you see here on posts. I miss the print magazine. Dave Olson

RE: Birds crashin planes
Major League Baseball game, several years ago, bird winging across the field between pitcher and catcher, all on video. Pitcher releases the ball, bird comes into picture, feathers fly, bird goes down, umpire throws up his arms, they clean off the field. That video's probably still on You-tube someplace. Don't know why birds would attack you. Lot of mosquitos in your cap? Gnats buzzing around your neck? Good luck, Dave Olson

RE: Is a Poulan 25cc a weaker engine?
Oddy, There's nothing wrong with converting that Poulan 25cc, if you have something that needs a lot of weight in the nose and has a lot of wing area (like, say, a big Cub.) However, if you want to fly 3D with an Extra, you'll probably want to pick an engine less massive. It all depends on how you want to fly. Best wishes, Dave Olson
