RE: First Kit 4*40
Looks great! I was going to work on mine this weekend but realized I don't have any thin CA left to attach the hinges so I'm stuck until I can get out and get some more. Could you post a pic of how you connected your engine throttle linkage to the motor?

RE: First Kit 4*40
So I'm going to try and cover the fuse and wing this weekend but I have a question before I do regarding the fuselage. I was going to cover the bottom in one piece (grey), the sides in a peice each and then to top of the front and turtle deck in a peice each. Does that sound about right since the sides and top will all be the same color?

RE: First Kit 4*40
Looks good, Gary! I haven't been able to put any time on mine lately but the wife is going out of town this weekend so I should be able to knock out alot of the covering then. I'm using the stock landing gear and pushrods with larger wheels (3"). Should be a nice contrast to your build. How are you going to work your pushrod for the throttle? I was thinking just a 180 degree bend.

RE: First Kit 4*40
I didn't hinge before covering, but now that I think about it I probably should have. Oh well, live and learn. I'm using Ultracote as that was recommended over Monocote.

Here are the results of my first attempt at covering. Not too bad if I do say so myself. Just have the ailerons and then the big stuff, wing and fuselage.

RE: Dead Stick in Air Only
The high end was set just a little rich and I was in the process of setting the low end. It's difficult on this engine because of the rotational limiter thingys. That and the high speed knob moves when the engine is running so I have to set the limiter bar where I want the knob to stop and be in tune.

RE: First Kit 4*40
Did some more sanding yesterday. Sanded with 400 grit on everything but the fuselage as I ran out of time. And by ran out of time I mean the baby woke up. :) Am going to try to get some covering started this evening and will post pictures.

Dead Stick in Air Only
Got my Avistar with Evolution 52 out to the field this weekend and was working on getting it tuned up. I thought I had it set ok but still sluggish on transition so I thought I'd give it a flight. Took off ok but then I could hear the engine loose RPMs a few times but then catch back up. After about 2 minutes it finally died and had to dead stick it in. Ran fine again on the stand and re-tuned it a bit on the high end and the transition was better. Took off again and right when I started my turn out it died and had a low altitude dead stick. Pointed the nose as the ground, gained some speed and pulled up to glide into the grass. I don't understand why it runs ok on the stand and not in the air. Using 10% Omega, OS 8 glow plug. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

RE: First Kit 4*40
Got a little work done today while the kiddo was napping. Just sanding the leading edges of the horizontal and vertical stabs along with the associated control surfaces. Didn't take pictures, not much to see. I did have a little trouble making the rounded edges even and nice looking but I got them close enough.

Thanks! I'll probably have time this weekend to get some work done. I'm about to start my first covering job so I'm a bit nervous about it but pretty sure I'll be alright. Watching MinnFlyers videos and such to get ready. I'm going for a WW2 look on this one with olive drab on top and light grey on bottom with military markings. Should be interesting.

RE: Buddy Box Question
I think that's a great idea. It took me a minute to figure out what you were saying but it makes perfect sense. I always thought of it as "push" and "pull" but I'll give the canopy and gear a shot the next time I'm out. I don't fly much inverted because of the fear of nosediving into the ground.

Not sure about the 6XAS, but mine takes the square plug. His would be older so I'm thinking it's probably the round one.

Buddy Box Question
A friend of mine has an old plane he is thinking of fixing up and learning to fly. He has an opportunity to buy a Futaba 6XAS radio for $20. We're wondering if that radio can be buddy boxed to my Futaba 6EXA radio. Is this possible or do we need to find an official "buddy box"? Thanks! John

Summer Heat
I had the day off yesterday so I went to the field for some flying. I got there around noon and it was already almost 100 degrees out so I flew once and packed it in. I was wondering if any of the more seasoned flyers could share some things to look for or things that can happen when flying in hot temps to our planes and equipment. Thanks! John

Been flying my Avistar for 3 years now. Just got a Evolution 52 in it and it really moves! You'll love the plane and the ARF isn't bad to assemble.

Got all the linkages routed except the fuel lines. Thought I'd throw it together for a pic before covering begins in a few weeks.

Made a servo tray out of 1/8" basswood and tristock rails. Pretty happy with how it came out. Was in the middle of installing the pushrods when I was called in to take care of the baby. Will get more done tomorrow hopefully. Question: will the gold-n-rods fit the sleeves I have or do they have their own size? Just asking in case the stock ones don't work out for some reason.

If I'm doing two colors, one mainly for the bottom of the wing and elevator and the other for the top and fuselage, how many rolls of each should it take to cover assuming this is my first time?

RE: TT .46 Pro Break In Compression
So as a last ditch effort before buying a new engine I put some soapy water on the motor to see if it would blow bubbles showing me the leak. Well turns out I should have done this long ago. There was a slow leak between the cylinder head and liner in one corner. I'm sure this gets worse as the engine heats up. I'm going to get a new gasket since it has been missing since it was sent for repairs and see if that seals it up. I'm still a bit worried about the stripped cylinder head bolt but it wasn't near the leak so hopefully I won't have to re-thread the block or anything.

This will be my first covering job so I don't want to do anything too complicated but I would like to use the checkers on the bottom of the wing. What colors would you suggest? I'm really open to anything.
