I'd also spent a little more on a charger now, get one which is capable of charging LiPo's so when you decide to go brushless you wont have to upgrade your charger :) Battery: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXXUP0&P=ML Cheapest LiPo capable charger I can find with a quick search is: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAGUG&P=ML So maybe a little out of budget, but remember if you go for LiPo's later on you will need to a new charger and the one you listed above will be useless.

Thanks Hwa224 for that explanation again, consider me double educated. I'm going to go for two combinations, both your suggestions. These: Front: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=L5KMJ302&P=7 Rear: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=L5KMJ102&P=7 and tires to fit: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=L5DU1402&P=ML and then some ready glued Desperados: Front: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBMHG&P=7 Rear: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBMHJ&P=7 In addition to the adapters: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=L5N05702&P=6 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=L5N05502&P=V and Tower suggests these, not sure why: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=L5N06002&P=V How's that look? RE: Return of Lunchbox..
ORIGINAL: lunchie hey just a question.. what are the most commonly broken parts on the lunchbox??? (apart from body mounts of course) thinking i might buy a few spares... maybe suspension arms???
I've never broken a suspension arm, but I have broken: 1) all body mounts - replaced with lots of epoxy glue and aluminium mounts 2) lost the hub on one wheel, it sheered clean off (and it was a front wheel so it wasn't drive/power related) - also glued 3) window plastic all smashed - left it out. 4) body A frame broken at the front on the left and right side of the front window - glue and a trimmed coat hanger fixed this 5) Bathtub where the body mount screws in snapped, again, lots of glue. That's pretty much it and all of those (except the wheel and bathtub) are cosmetic things or easily fixed with epoxy, no real need to buy any spares in my experience.

RE: Return of Lunchbox..
OK, I understand, and I think I know where I've been having trouble, i'm finding it difficult to find wheels which accept the 5x11x4m bearings because most of the 2WD vehicles I've seen still use a hex shaped hub on the front (which spins feely around bearings connected to the steering knuckle). You say you're using Traxxas wheels, could you let me know whicih specific ones go together with the adapters you use?

RE: Return of Lunchbox..
Awesome, thanks for the links, that helps me A LOT. I assume that using those front adapters means I can use any 12mm Hex type wheel and just re-use the bearings from the existing Lunchbox wheels, correct?

RE: Return of Lunchbox..
ORIGINAL: Hwa224 Scratch2k, you can use HPI adapters to fit wheels that use 12mm hex. You'll have to cut the tip off, though. You'll also need to buy a collar adapter set for the wheels that have the bearings in the front to properly space them out. Even with those collars, with my Traxxas Jatos in the front, I had to use a parcticular washer to remove any play in the wheels

RE: Return of Lunchbox..
Those allow wheels look fantastic but the cost is a bit high for anything but a shelf queen Lunchbox (which IMHO is a travesty!) My nephew was driving my Lunchbox and the hub on the front wheel sheered off completely, leaving the hub still attached to the axle and the tyre and what was left of the wheel spinning down the street, it was quite a sight but I think I reacted badly, he didn't want to drive it after that :) I managed to glue it back together but I'm not sure how long it will last so I'm looking for a way to replace the wheels and tyres with something better, I found these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/9335442-Tamiya-Midnight-Pumpkin-Lunchbox-Chrome-Wheels-/380412660876?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item58925c8c8c#ht_500wt_1306 but don't want to stick with the standard LB tyres, I figure I may as well upgrade if I can. Is there some way to set up the LB so it will take normal hex wheels (from a 1/8th scale buggy/truggy) or has anyone else been able to fit any other types of wheel/tyre combo without any mods at all?

RE: Return of Lunchbox..
Welcome to the world of Lunchbox, it looks like you have some big plans! As an alternative to the body posts you are doing (which will do the job just fine I'm sure), I used these: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXZHE6 They also bolt directly on to the existing chassis and don't change the position of the body at all. I think maybe your method may be a little mor durable, when I was running a brushless system I ended up breaking the chassis where my mounted were bolted on (some sheet metal and epoxy soon fixed it permanently though!). Have fun wtih your lunchbox, looking forward to the first running video!

I know it is a hobby item, I know. If I wanted a toy I would go to WalMart and buy a Nikko 9.6 v. However, if a hobby is NEVER fun, then it becomes work. I don't want to work, after work!!! Peace guys, and thanks SOOO much for helping and trying to answer my questions.
You're not alone, only someone with the patience of a saint of the spare time of a high school kid will garner any sort of enjoyment from the Monster King. I originally bought two, ended up warranty returning TWO engines, converetd both to pull start and eventually traded both trucks for a brushless SC18 which is SO MUCH MORE FUN and less trouble. Good luck selling yours, but a more cathartic exercise may involve some small explosives as you suggested.

RE: Return of Lunchbox..
Since you would be throwing away a majority of the orignial LB mechanics and trying to retrofit new axels, gearbox etc on to the bathtub, I think you would be better off buying a standard crawler and fitting a Lunchbox body shell to it somehow? The end result would look the same and probably be a better crawler.

I suppose you could take off the stock hub adapter and fit hex adapters on there, that would solve the problem and allow you to run pretty much any wheel you wanted. I haven't tried this but it should work.

Which wheels/tyres did you order? I was having a lot of trouble finding some which would fit that were not the stock ones but then I figured the stock ones are pretty good and are showing no signs of wear despite the abuse I put them through but it's always good to have a spare set.

RE: Return of Lunchbox..
I don't use oil in my fifth shock at all, the purpose of that shock is as more of a brace anyway and it does the job for me. I've been running a 2600KV motor in mine for a while and it's a lot of fun but complete overkill, since installing the motor I have snapped all 4 body posts (replaced with metal ones) and completely smashed the front/side windows. My LB is looking worse for wear but I wouldn't change a thing, nothing like dragging off a Brushless Thunder Tiger XXT (in a straight line with a rolling start :).

RE: New SC18 Street Blaster!
I pulled apart the rear end to change the diff oil to find that the previous owner had installed a ball diff. It was slightly warn and could have one with a rebuild which explains why it wasn't rolling smoothly. Rather than rebuild it I decided to lock it the old fashioned way (with glue) and I took it for a quick ride and I can tell it's already going to be a fun drifter, I just need to practice my technique.

RE: New SC18 Street Blaster!
Alrght, thank again for the comprehensive answers. I have meant to tear down the car and check the diff/spur/belt etc for wear but just haven't gotten around to it, I'll definitely grab from heavy diff oil and put that in the rear to see if that fixes the sandy feeling. I have added the stinger body to my tower wishlist, will grab it next time I place an order. I take it that since the 18R is about an inch shorter in the wheelbase there aren't any 18R bodes which would be suitable for the SC18?

RE: New SC18 Street Blaster!
Nice one, thanks. Are you saying that with that oil if you manually turn one wheel the other will turn the same direction (.i.e. it's locked)? When I turn one of my rear wheels they don't spin all that freely, it's like the diff is a bit sandy or grindy, not sure if this is normal since I purchased my SC18 second hand, already modded with a lot of alu parts and extra bits. One last question, where did you get that body from?

I found this thread while searching for something else to do with my SC18, it's got lots of mods and a brushless system and flies like a rocket but it's hopeless off road, just too smaller to absorb even the smallest bumps. So, I want to convert it to a drift and found your thread, is what you listed above all you did to turn it in to a drifter/road racer? I see you also removed the front and rear bumpers, anything else that isn't obvious? Did you lock the diffs or was the oil change enough? Got any videos of it running?

RE: HPI Nitro Monster king... speak up!!
ORIGINAL: cskipro After two full years of "challenges" with my Nitro Monster King, I finally have it running. This will be my 3rd nitro vehicle, and I have to tell you it has some issues, or "challenges" as I put it before. Here are the issues laid out for you guys. 1) electric start feature required me to insert the starter pole into the slot at an angle, stripping the nut after less than 20 attempts to start the vehicle. As all of you know, it takes some time to get the engine's hi & low speed screws set during the break-in process. So, on the very first Saturday afternoon that I could really go bashing, I could no longer start the truck. I was furious. 2) I called HPI & they were aware of the problem, and offered me a pull starter kit. After about 3 weeks it came in. So, I installed it, and I STILL couldn't get it to start. Back to the local hobby store. Found out the glow plug was a bit too long. Finally, I got the right size glow plug and started her up. 3) The truck under-steer's horribly. It has a turning radius of a real, full size SUV. 20 ft to turn around an R/C truck is unacceptable. The half/half front tires may prevent the truck from flipping, but if it wont turn, then it is just gonna smash into something, like a parked car or a curb, at full speed. So, please advise on the best kind of front tires so I can have a nice balance between turning and flipping over. Let me know what u guys think. I am new to the forum! -Thx, CHris
I had two monster kings but after having similar problems to you (I even blew up two engines and had them replaced), I also bought a pull start kit (or two) and convery from the rotostart which never worked properly and it helped, I actually got mine to run pretty reliably but then it would sometimes take 10-15 minutes of mucking around just to get the thing started and I didn't even contemplate trying to get both started at the same time. I traded them for a brushless SC18 and couldn't be happier. Nitro is fun when everything is going well but the variables involved in having things go well are so complicated compared to electric I just didn't have the time and patience to figure it out. Electric is much more my style. <meta charset="utf-8" />
ORIGINAL: hunternaf here is a couple minute video with the truggy goosebumps, before I lost the front tire again http://youtu.be/WBj77i8sEZw
Great video, mine never wheelied like that. I commend you on havin yours tuned so well and love the ending of the video, mine did that once, at full speed in a straight line, the wheel rolled for about 100m.

RE: HPI Nitro Monster king... speak up!!
<meta charset="utf-8" /> Your attachments aren't working but I think I know what you mean. Setting the attach point of the suspension out further will likely lower the ride height and would probably make it handle better. I have some 800mm dampers I'm going to try to get the same effect. I'm sick of this thing falling over every time I touch the steering wheel.
