RE: BEC 5amp enoguh for 6 servos
I'm actually surprised it cant handle it. Bummer. I have a similar setup I'm putting in a cessna, 6 servos same size, with an 80amp ESC that has a 5.5v 6AMP SBEC on it. Hope it is enough. Take a look at this, I've used one and had no problems with it http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__6233__TURNIGY_8_15A_UBEC_for_Lipoly.html Also I've read this one is good but I have not tested it, some like that redundancy http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__14464__Turnigy_Redundant_Dual_8A_UBEC_Rx_Power_System.html

RE: BEC 5amp enoguh for 6 servos
ORIGINAL: gosk8ing Hi, Quick question. I've just purchased an E-Flite 25 Ultra Stick. I was planning on using the quad flap feature. After cutting the ailerons in half I read the radio installation section and it noted that a receiver battery and switch harness must be used if using quad flap option. If I knew this was a must, I wouldn't have bothered with the extra parts and weight to the plane. So here is my question. Do I need a receiver battery or how do I check if I do? I'm running a e-flite 25 brushless, 4s lipo (not sure what capacity yet), castle creations ice 50 amp ESC (has 5 amp BEC and will program ESC to 6 volts BEC so the servos have more torque), 6x HS225MG servos, and a Hitec Optima 9 2.4ghz receiver. Thanks
Not sure if the castle escs come with a switching bec, if so then it may work. Best thing to do is to test it and let us know.

RE: HK Orders
Glad things worked out. If you keep ordering with HK they will acknowledge your loyalty. I have read about previous HK buyers (with over 1k in spending) get a replacement plane sent to them with no need to return original broken plane (from shipment). HK does have odd shipping. I once placed two orders (one from usa and the other from global) and the usa order got shipped in 24 hours while the global took 3 weeks to arrive. They lack consistency and I have discovered there are multiple reasons for this. Some items are HK brand like Durafly, NTM, Turnigy, and hk brand. But other stuff that HK rebrands like this one plane I ordered... Are made to order from a factory. Even though they said they had 9 in stock the order sat for 1 week in approved state. I called HK and they told me the Plane was being shipped from factory to their front end warehouse. This is one reason why it is slow and is not expressed by their order "status" system.

RE: Pre-Maiden Jitters
ORIGINAL: jester_s1 A plan helps a lot. Work out in your mind what your flight path is going to be and what maneuvers you're going to do. Also decide ahead of time what you are going to do if the wind throws you off course. Pick a day to fly when the wind is light so you know you'll have a predictable plane. The second thing that really helps is getting a more experienced pilot to fly it for you the first time. That way you know you're starting with a properly trimmed plane and you can see it fly right before you get on the sticks.
Yea this is exactly what I do, on maidens I just take off and correct my settings then practice a few passes then practice landing and take offs. I feel I need to be comfortable with landings and take offs before I start to test a plane. Because in the event I lose power I need to be able to land confidently. So I practice take offs and landings first then when everything checks out and I'm comfortable to land... I start to play around a bit getting more and more ballsy until after 10-30 flights BAM crash :P
ORIGINAL: s7jstep1 i know the main thing for me with this plane right now will be practice but as my skills develop, what are some common mods that people are doing to these planes to improve speed and/or runtime? im assuming brushless and lipo. i probably wont even be able to make it through a single battery without breaking something right now lol. im just curious. thanks
The right propeller, brushless motor size/kV/cels supported, and the right cel/capacity/weight battery can improve run significantly. Thing is with air planes i think the flying style is the biggest way to conserve batteries. For example my sport glider, axn floater jet, could go 70 miles or so full throttle and get around 5-8 minutes doing aerobatics and high speed passes but when I feel like gliding and catching thermals with the same battery I got 20min out of it once.

Yea I agree with Jose, I was into 1/5th scale Gas cars and 27cc 4 bolt gas engines... Nitro too and even a savage flux. Cars can be fun but air planes are much better. I love the switch and I'm not looking back. My only gripe with an airplane is that any servo failure is pretty catastrophic compared to my 1/5th scale gas cars. I can cut the motor on my 1/5th scales anytime I want and it rolls to a stop but with an airplane if you are lucky you might be able to land but generally if you have a servo fail its pretty bad... Like an aileron servo fails at like full throw.. Dear god.

Yea don't fly that plane... I learned the hard way because War birds fly different and are not as easy to land as a tri-cycle gear plane or even a top/high wing tail dragger. Go to your local club and get some ideas there for a starter plane from the members. Something like a nitro NeXstar is very popular for learning to fly on.

Just bought a 1.8m Cessna!
Made of foam!!! http://rcinformer.com/the-giant-cessna-182-1-8-meter-epo-pnf-from-hobby-king/ I bought it from phillip w RC (pw-rc.com) for 135 plus 50 shipping no electrics.! I then bought a G32 600kV turnigy motor (exact motor as the e-flight power 32) http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=19025 I also bought one of the new HobbyKing ESCs from the "YEP" line. I have heard nothing but excellent reviews/experiences with this ESC and I have read the soldering quality is 2nd to none, well worth the money. We will see once i get it! http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=20693 Also bought a programming card for it. I bought 7 of these popular corona servos with metal gears (incase 1 was dead, only need 6) http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=16342 Also I accidentally found these 4s 5000mAh 20c lipos... they dont show up when i search for them manually http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=17819 you can only buy 1 at the 26 dollar price, when you go to checkout and try to adjust the quantity it says limit is one... but I found a loophole where if you go to the product page and click add... it adds it... so I did this 5 times and it added 5 at the 26 dollar price. I bought it and guess what! IT shipped within 4 hours... I got my tracking # already. I was amazed at how fast it shipped and the loophole worked!

RE: Good Starter Plane
A pusher glider seems to be the best trainer imo. Pusher gliders take minimal damage on impacts and are very stable (good ones). Landing a glider takes practice because they have so little drag they can glide forever so you need space to come in and lose the speed before you land or else you are going to cartwheel and lose some foam!

Tamiya Rally cars
I've been looking at the Tamiya cars and I havent owned a tamiya since 1996. I've been in nitros, gas, and now electric. I want a brushless system (for nice efficient power) and a tamiya but I have no clue how resilient the Tamiya drivetrain is... Should I just looked at brushless? A model that stood out for me was the new Tamiya XV-01 Pro Rally chassis... love that it comes out of the box with mud/dirt protection. I plan to race the car on asphalt and fine dirt. I have also taken a look at the Kyosho DRX line but wish they came in kits. Gotta love tamiya for stickin with kits!
ORIGINAL: red head Another point that you may already know but I'll refresh anyway; Once CA hinges are put in and the CA is applied it WILL NOT wick the CA back over the hinge again, the wicking is completed on the first shot. If you feel that there is a problem with a hinge try making a small hole over the hinge ( both sides ) and squirt some glue in that way and see if it tightens the hinge. The best way if you suspect a hinge is to drill a small hole through the hinge , push a round tooth pick in the hole , trim it off, then put thin CA on it. Then either cover the hole or paint over the spot . ENJOY !!! RED
That is good advice to remember next time, luckily for me 2 of the hinges on the right aileron (in the center not the ends of the aileron) had 0 glue and I could tell they were moving. I follow this method for installing my hinges too. http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=55

At least that is how it is with Air planes and air fields. From what I have read and experienced at my local air field there are certain individuals in the community or county board that try find any reason close down fields that dont comply to the decibel that was set. I think what is more important is to just to find an accessible place just to bash 1/5th first. Racing comes after you have established locations to bash 1/5th. Like when it comes to airplanes... it is so convenient... I have a field 5min from and another 20min and another 40 min away. All catering to diff type of planes, some have runways, and some dont... But if I want to play 1/5th... I have to go to PA. No thanks. Honestly for 1/5th scale to succeed in racing I think it has to go strictly electric (here in the states). Or strict muffler regulation (must have silencer) for gas. It seems it was hard enough for some airplane clubs to get county help... And airplanes require knowledge, experience, and mathematic (when you build your own plane from scratch)... What do you really build on 1/5th scale cars? Making planes is much easier/accessible considering you use balsa and ply while cars need metal, welding, and so on.

RE: I could not resist...
Well I received it after a month with no instructions or CG information. For 90 bucks you get a pre-covered plane, e-max motor (nice), some 30amp esc (waiting for my turnigy to replace it), servos, and all required hardware. While I was building this plane I noticed the rudder is going to steer the plane and the rudder only had 2 CA hinges slotted and thought that would be insufficient so I added an extra CA hinge after I made a slot with an sharp hobby knife. The aileron has 5 hinges each side and it was already glued. I played with the ailerons for a while to make sure all were glued and noticed a few hinges were slightly loose so I added a touch of thin CA. I used 30min epoxy to glue the wings. I did not build this plane as cleanly as my e-flite. I blame lack of experience, no manual, and I was rushing to finish it. There are some bubbles in the covering but for the most part for the money I think it is excusable. It is only a step below my e-flite advance 25e in covering quality/finish. But the balsa and ply is clean and looks like it is built well.

RE: Need help with a foamy
These are great options and I know from word of mouth they are great. Fast- Radjet 800mm from HK. Batteries are cheap too from HK but you need a lipo balancing charger It uses epo foam so it is durable and with a careful hand and a blow drier you can make epo bounce back or if your summers are hot then leave the plane out on the deck and it will bounce back into shape. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__19690__Hobbyking_Radjet_800_EPO_800mm_PNF_.html Glider - This plane can go 60mph on the stock battery and do aerobatics plus I get 10-15min run time per battery. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=16568 need esc (30amp), batteries, and 4 9g servos for this plane but those dont cost much on hks website. Also lipo balancing charger. 3d - An Edge 540 800mm http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__22851__H_king_High_Performance_Racer_Series_Edge_540_V3_800mm_PNF_.html Regardless of what plane you buy from what ever company, I suggest you buy your charger and batteries from hobbyking and save a huge amount of money. HK Turnigy batteries are great, I have 8 3s 800mAh, 4 3s 2200 mAh, 8 2s 5000 mAh, and 4 4s 3200 mAh turnigy batteries and only 2 of them puffed because I was drawing more power than they were rated for (oooops) but now I have a watt meter to check the Amps my setups are pulling to prevent that from happening again. I had a 3rd one puff too (2s 5000) but that was because my Savage Flux flew into a tree sideways (battery compartment) at full speed.

I never claimed HK products to be better... When I can get 90% of the performance/quality for 40% of the price. I think that makes it a superb deal/item. I challenge you to buy this plane and setup from hobbyking... less than 90 bucks with everything. I have the exact setup the same esc/servos/batteries. I flew it yesterday at the club and some of the veterans loved it and were amazed I was getting 20min run time on one battery with high speed passes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU_IEdTDOq0&list=PLB2541DD14E15F743&feature=plcp&context=C320babaFDOEgsToPDskICoDMDJXu642BIQ079XHp5 Most of you rag on hobbyking without giving them a chance. You dont buy things on hobbyking by what is cheapest in their inventory.. You go by "what has the most positive reviews". Then you take it a step further and go on rcgroups and see if theres any dedicated thread there. There is a reason why they are popular and gaining more and more customer base. I almost never ever buy RTF.. .Also go for kit and then custom select my electronics from their inventory. RTF generally is bad and underspecd in esc terms.

Jose brings up a good point. I would go to a local club and see what they use and buy the same brand. Most likely it will be Spektrum. This will help buddy box when starting out and make it easier. Jose was helping me out when I first built my Advance 25e and we couldnt buddy box with my turnigy (it didnt work with spektrum). For that reason I would go with a name brand... Otherwise with my experience and after reading others I find it hard to buy such an expensive radio like futaba... Especially when you pair the Turnigy with a FrSky module. I love futaba, my car/truck radios are futaba but I'm tired of paying 89 dollars per Rx. I had 9 cars at one point... the cost was outrageous for receivers. Turnigy Batteries, ESCs, Motors, and NTM motors are well known to be top quality... In fact many times the motor is generally rebranded and sold here in the states by guys like E-flite. example... http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/power-25-bl-outrunner-motor-870kv-EFLM4025A vs the same exact thing less than half price... These Turnigy G series motors are very very very popular http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=14401 Here is the NTM motor I use and general consensus... Good stuff It is in my advance 25e using an 11x8 prop http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__24243__NTM_Prop_Drive_35_48_Series_900KV_815W_USA_Warehouse_.html I used the Sentry version of this ESC which is the same but has a balance plug that allows the ESC to monitor each cel of the battery instead of an AVG voltage to do the cutoff. It also has a switching bec. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2166 works great! My setup pulls 51Amps and no trouble to far... With Turnigy Nanotech 35c 4s 3300 batteries that also work flawlessly.

THe FS is a fantastic radio but must have v2 firmware or else you are going to have to get the usb cable for it and upgrade with custom firmware to get extra features and iron out the bugs. I suggest getting the Turnigy 9x v2 instead since i know for sure it has the v2 firmware and it is the same controller just hobbyking brand. I love mine and the stock Tx Module in it works great and has good frequency hopping. However I replaced my module with a FrSky (best for the money imo) JR style module since the 9x/FS use JR style modules. You can get the turnigy 9x for cheaper than the FS too! Regardless of Radio I suggest buying the FrSky module anyway down the road, because the Rx modules are cheaper than anything futaba sell and generally cheaper than all the other brands too and made with high quality parts and it is no clone! But for starting out to save money use the stock module. Theres nothing wrong with the stock module... I just wanted telemetry and longer range so i got the FrSky. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=19673 You can use the 6ch hobbyking receiver with the 9x to save space/weight and money. this one here works with 9x http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12901__Hobby_King_2_4Ghz_Receiver_6Ch_V2.html Review http://rcmodelreviews.com/turnigy9xv2review.shtml Review of FrSky http://rcmodelreviews.com/frskyreview.shtml

Yea you made a mistake there. Bananahobby/Blitz do not have good electronics 4 out of 5 times. I don't understand this... Why not sell all the models without the esc/motor/servos (not as many kits on their website) for cheaper price to begin with. Nitroplanes and hobbyking in general put better electronics in most of the planes. Hobbyking has a tendancy to replace electronics in planes that are not built by them (like if it isnt a durafly) like skyangel planes. I've noticed in my 2 skyangel planes from HK they have HK branded ESCs in them and not the crap that normally comes with it. Gotta research when it comes to these chinese RTFs.
