RE: Mintor .38
hehehe, cough cough uh huh cough cough now maybe the DLE 35 could be closer either way... I been curous on the mintors too. they sure look beautiful.. IMO I think they look better than a DA. I love those cooling fins on em.. just a work of art.

Looking real good, I bet your getting anxious! I guess thats why I am limited to the 35%.. going up to 40% is a very large jump in overall cost.. Your wing seems to have been taken to the right person though good luck with the rest!
ORIGINAL: evan-RCU So I have to ask, are you just respouting what you see other write? Have you ever seen one of the NP 100cc planes, the Yak or the Sukoi? Ever flown one? Compared the NP Yak to the QQ Yak side by side?
I have.. I OWN a QQ Yak 54 101 with a DLE 111, and compared to a Nitro Planes.. there is none. well, they are both called Yak. Thats not meant to put one down really, just saying they are not the same build.

RE: DLE 55-RA
DLE is a great reliable engine. DA is better. Hobby Services does good for service. DA does better. Yes, I own both brands, and yes I have experience with both services. The DA 60 has a wicked power punch. It just yanks a plane off the ground, where the DLE 55 will spool up.
ORIGINAL: evan-RCU I agree and it's not only Nitro Planes,... As far as stopping someone from flying an unsafe plane, I will to an extent. I've had some people get mad but they always come back to thank me after they cool down.
Exactly how it goes for me. And for what its worth to anyone else, my comments are just that.. comments.Just ranting my own opinions and observations.. not meant as suggestions. started in the hobby in mid 80's fwiw.. Its up to whoever else to make the choice. I have heard good comments on the cheap planes as well, but I have to add, they dont seem to still be flying them the following year. In fact, I challenge anyone that knows or owns a Nitroplane 50cc or better, to give an overall honest review after one full season of heavy flying, and even better, before and after images.

RE: Dirt cheap 100cc airframe?
Im not the kind of guy that would look at someones airplane and say 'you cant fly that thing!', however, if asked what I think, I would make suggestions as to what and where to 'beef' it up. I might go as far to say I wouldnt fly it untill.. but as far as that goes, thats it. Im no moderator, im no saftey marshall.. I will just simpley stay clear of the thing when it does go in the air, and keep a close eye on where its at. Theres plenty of rat nest airplanes flying around at our club. some amaze me each time they go home in one piece. Really the concern is that someone just begining in the hobby getting this cheap ultra cheap airplane, not understanding why its cheap, and what corners were cut to make it cheap.. and, what it takes to make an airplane a solid flyier. It takes experience in construction to know what to look for as far as weak areas poor quality hardware and such, thats all. My only gripe about NitroPlanes is they use trickery to lure people in, and then all the threads and stories of no responce from customer service when in need. Heck, they advertised having DA engine cheap a few weeks ago, and the image is clearly a hobby king clone something. If anything, it looked closer to a DLE. Just poor practice on thier behalf.. and I dont feel its any mistake.

RE: Dirt cheap 100cc airframe?
ORIGINAL: evan-RCU So what are yo ugoing to do inspect every 50cc and up plane that comes out to fly and tell them they can't becuase you think they need more hinges in the elevators or a stronger tail wheel? Some things truely should be noted and told to the pilot not knowing what to look for but if anyone tried to tell me my aircraft isn't "safe" that's another thing. Me not safe, well that's another subject...[:D] Do you have rules by aircraft size at your filed, curious. We don't other than the AMA's when you get really big.
His point is valid, maybe not worded the best.. but its true. The 'dirt cheap' airframes bought by the inexperienced RC pilot is trouble in the making. They require a lot of modifications to make a solid airframe, and the new or inexperienced RC person is unaware of this. I see it a lot, someone going the cheap route to get into the hobby, only to find that it takes even more and more money in upgrades and whatever's to make it worthy.. they end up busted and broke, with nothing to fly. Guys, just take a look at the video of the 100cc Yak 54 on NitroPlanes own web site. Its CLEAR in the video they did not fly a nitroplane that was stock built. They do NOT make any reference to the fact. The images start out stock (aluminum gear, etc) and then you see the carbon items apear. The pilot knows how well it would fly with a stock assembly... Its a topic beaten to death.. these planes generally take hundreds of dollars after the fact to make them a decent plane, and they can be. But dont fool yourself by thinking that a 300$ kit will be all you need. That kit will reach the thousand dollar mark in no time, and in the end, its still a cheap nitroplane. Let the beating begin.. but dont expect me to hit the ground any time soon.

On the other hand, I also was wondering why I had not heard of these before, and suprised at the comment you quoted as well.. but Im sure he does have a lot of interest within his 'social network', and thats where I left my pondering, and moved on to interest. RE: Throttle servo buzzing for DLE20
I mentioned removing the spring load on the throttle arm as only to see if the servo operates better or not without the load.. It may help with finding any bind that could be there. I did forget to mention putting the spring back on after the test was made, sorry bout that. Didnt think id be responded to as if it was bad advice.. Just throwing out some testing ideas, was all. I dont remove them permanently either. I also dont think I said the servo was junk, not sure why that offended you truckracer.. wasnt what I was aiming for.

RE: Throttle servo buzzing for DLE20
Another thing I have just considered.. I have had this issue, and some others I know as well. Check the butterfly inside the carb itself, and make CERTAIN that the set screw that mounts the butterfly onto the throttle shaft IS TIGHT. There are known issues with those small screws coming loose, and worse, getting sucked into the engine if not found and secured in time. That would definetly cause a binding of the throttle servo, since the butterfly is not aligned to the barrel properly.

RE: Throttle servo buzzing for DLE20
oldtyme, it really sounds like its just buzzing from the spring tension of the throttle arm. Thats completly normal. Glow carbs dont have the spring load so there is very little restriction on the servo's. Id have to suggest taking the spring off the throttle arm as mentioned before, not off completly, just unhook it from the carb's arm, and see if your servo still buzz's. If not, theres the issue. A lot of gas engine owners really do use a good high torque servo for throttle as well, versus the standard we can get away with on a glow motor. Due to spring load, and for the accuracy to hold in all ranges of throttle accuratly. Even better, a metal geared servo because of the direct link from the engine taking vibration will wear out a plastic geard servo fairly fast. I would be surprised if its anything other than just the spring load on the carb, and a servo thats just enough to operate it. Try another (besides the 'other one' you already tried) good MG servo.

RE: DLE Engines?
Ive gota DLE 20 and a DLE 111, and all I can say is Id buy more The 20 is a screamer, had a little trouble in the begining only because it was my first gas airplane motor. Great motor. The 111 is even better. Tuned the thing right outa box with a 28x10 Mej, all stock setup at 6450 rpm, great throttle range, no hesitations or sputters, just shear power people actually get slightly impressed when I prime it, open the choke, and it starts within 1-5 flips. good.

RE: DLE-20 Ignition Module Bad ???
Taz.. by reading your first post its clear you are fixing a new engine that probably wasnt broke. You mentioned the 'dreaded #4 ignition box' yet just after that, you said "I have read stories about one of the boxes being notably inconsistant which I think was #4". You are going off some forum information that claims a faulty ignition, yet also addmiting you are not sure even what ignition people were talking about.. I will stop there. Not trying to be rude man, but this seriously sounds like you created problems for yourself. I can understand wanting to verify the ignition timing, because some people do find it to be off from factory.. I did have a DLE 20 ignition just quit working in the air. No real explanation, used a 6 volt Nimh.. and no found cause from the factory. "The ignition failed at some point" was their exact words. It was replaced under warrenty. I dont know what the number was on it. Sometimes, if it aint broke dont fix it.. can be your best friend. And in this case, it sure sounds like you expected problems.. and got them. Too bad you didnt try running the engine, and then problem solve what might be needed. Mine did not need timing adjusted, ran out of the box with minimal tuning, and has been running (screaming) ever since. Maybe Im wrong, but if Im right, just maybe it will prevent you from fixing another new product before you even try using it.

RE: 3D Plane for DLE 20?
ORIGINAL: ameyam Hey, no one replied to the question regarding the Reactor Bipe. I have one ready with the mount drilled for a FS110a. But I did do a temporary install with the DLE20. It balances better with the DLE. With the 110, I have to put the 3200mAh LiFe with the ignition battery and RX below the tank in the front behind the firewall to get it balanced whereas with the DLE, I can put them on the stock position. My Reactor bipe is built with additional reinforcement, so is approx 3.7kg with the Dle20 Ameyam
I love the reactor bipe! Its a blast! I have had a lot of engine combos in the thing, OS 110 fs, YS 110 fs, and the dle 20. The DLE 20 is the best combo IMO. It sticks out a bit further and just makes the best balancing. I think really the most of people dont have experience with a bi plane enough. They are a different breed of airplane completely. They handle different, and are usually heavier than anything comparing in a mono. But with some time and feel of the bipe, and some proper mixing, you can do serious 3D just the same as a mono. And, its a Bi Plane! hah I just love biplanes though, too. Maybe the love for the biplane is getting lost little by little with the ages.. who knows.

RE: 40 size flat out what do you think
I suppose the 'not happy with it' part just doesnt show in the pics above, cause that thing looks great Im sure you already know, but that pink or blue foam is much heavier than the white stuff. The white foam sheets I get at Home deport is rated at 0.7 - 2.0 lb per sq foot, where the blue/pink are more around 3-7 lb per sq. foot ranges .. (guessing) .. Being you are using balsa/foam combo to build, I dont understand why you wouldnt want to use the lightest foam avaliable. Not to mention the white stuff is cheaper, if I remember right. I understand the higher dencity stuff is smoother material as far as cutting and sanding smooth, but if your using balsa's as well, some light filler takes care of any imperfections prior to your balsa caps or sheeting. Even using the standard amber colored gorilla glue works wonderfull on the foam, due to its foaming up as it cures, it will fill in any little foam chunks that may have broke loose from sanding or carving.. Just some penny's to throw around, is all.

Well, with new pistons and rings you have to break the thing in all over again, so of course its not going to be the same as before. Its going to take several gallons of fuel to get the thing to preform like it was, again. Give it some run time!

That was late 90's at an EAC pattern contest, Creswell OR. I believe it was just before the turnaround style began. Large scale were still somewhat limited to Quadra engines, or some conversion, electrics were small and rare to see.. Bob.. Yeager? Do I dare ask? If so, all I can say is Mike Yeager was a real pleasure to be around. Always a smile on his face, always a story to be told, and about as friendly as you could imagine. It was as if we were all a part of the same family. Even if you didnt know the guy what so ever, he would be happy to meet you.

RE: TF P-39 Aircobra Tank Buster, Gold Edition
Bob, I like your signiture. I had the pleasure of flying RC planes with Chuck Yeager's son, Mike years ago here in Eugene OR. Mike was a great guy, just a red blooded American through and through. Unfortunatly, Mike passed away about 6-8 months ago. I had quit flying about 15 years ago for awhile, and within that time there was some falling out with some club members, and he created his own airfield on his land. I dont know how he died, but from what I heard, it was unexpected. Some of us got a chance to meet Chuck Yeager when he came to town to visit Mike back in the late 90's. God Bless them.

RE: TF P-39 Aircobra Tank Buster, Gold Edition
I was talking with a fellow club member the other day about the Aircobra, and he had a couple little tidbits to share on why the P-39 didnt last long with the United States. Unfortunately the Aircobra was not fitted with self sealing fuel tanks. The self sealers were made up of a material that could reseal a puncture created by a bullet. They also did not have a very good rate of climb, and a low service ceiling. Because of these two issues, and several other aircraft that were being developed, it was dumped.
ORIGINAL: essyou35 Wounded pride? Your ego is way too big. You are just implying that somehow I am not a "real rc" guy. My only point is that a lot goes into making some of these cheaper arfs fly. I built the modellbau f-86D "ARF", and it took my 6 months of modifying and fixing, and lot of creativity not only by me but another guy who has serious skills. I am just saying that obviously you dont have any idea what it takes to make some arfs go. Some arfs do fall out of the box and fly like a lot of the H9 and e-flite stuff.
ORIGINAL: smithcreek As usual any thread that mentions ARFs turns into the ARF people defending their wounded pride. I never understood this. I don't knit my own sweaters, but I don't get all defensive when someone shows me their handmade one.

smithcreek is right for the most part. And essyou35, man go re-read your posts.. how can you respectfully dissagree to something, claim you dont want to split hairs and all that, when you are putting the insults you claim smithcreek has made, in his mouth for him?! We all know there is an argument on whether or not ARF assembly is worthy of being called building... just about anytime it gets brought up.. no one said your not a 'real rc' guy because you are not really building! Or, maybe you really are building??? Jeeeeez, take a breath and dont make more out of it than it really is..

RE: Can Keith Sparks spark the build comeback?
Mike, I think I realized something that created the issue here.. or at least some. Its not that you were stealth advertising, really.. because who really cares about that? I think what it is here, is that us old builders, you know, the few of us around here that grew up building planes from sticks. The few of us that were building before there was such a thing as an ARF.. well almost.. Laineer had a couple in the early early days, called 'rubber duckies', they were heavy but they were allright. My Dad use to tell me about them in somewhat of a joking mannor.. Still, I built kits and before the ARF erra.. Royal back in the 80's had a couple ARFs was about it.. I believe the Super Chipmunk was one, and it was a decent one. I have spent as much as a full calendar year building one pattern plane in mid 90's. Point is, theres been many arguments 'round here about the definition of BUILDING. People claim they build arf's now days. They use the word build when talking about an ARF, and it strikes a nerve with the older generation in RC. Its not building! its assembling! Its not surprising that the newer generation does not understand this. You mentioned you have only been flying for 4 years.. yes, I said Only. So it makes sence that you yourself misused the word Build in our point of view. I think we even have a hard time with someone saying they built a foamy.. because to the true builders, thats still not building! I think its just a play on words, and old die hards that have too too much pride in the craft! I admit, I am one of those.. Maybe Im way off here.. but, thats what I kinda feel. We dont let go of the way things were very easy! Anyways, good luck to you and your mag. Im sure it will pick up. I just wish you wouldnt be so certain that the paper products were going obsolete.. I know what you mean though.. for instance, why is the Kindle.. named what it is.. Kindle.. Fire?? Yes gentlemen, Its intentional... Kindle Fire = Burning Books. And they do. btw, that was not a question I was asking about the kindle name, its a fact.

RE: TF P-39 Aircobra Tank Buster, Gold Edition
Mike, I was contemplating an electric in this if I built it as well. The nose is quite slender, and it would seem a shame to hack it up and have a hunk of metal hangin out the side, with the way electrics are today.. and I agree, I have heard some bigger electrics sound as good as some combustion motors, for sure.. seems around a .60 size is where the electrics start getting a good prop noise, too. Was the kit you bought the gold edition, or the red box? The red box was the standard kit, with red around the outer box.

RE: Can Keith Sparks spark the build comeback?
I agree, Gray Beard. Building has not died, or a lost art. Still tons of people that actually build, either kit form, scratch from plans or foam. Granted its not as common because of the ARF evolution over the last couple decades. It will never die, for that matter.. so long as humans have freedom and an imagination! I could pick apart several areas of this thread that would show how much an advertisement this is.. but, hey, thats what the forums are for, too... I suppose. I would just say if it was me, mkranitz, I wouldnt have made my post as if I was having it published in the next months magazines' contents page.. we're regular folks around here, and magazine style threads just dont feel.. one on one? bleh, maybe Im just an A hole.
