RE: 62cc motor, King of the hill??
OBR is working on a complete twin drop-in kit. The exhaust will be done by Jet-Pro, the engine mounting I heard by Turtle and Scorpion is I think doing a longer chassis to tame the wheelies. One of the problems is the twin doesn't use a finned flywheel so that's where the cooling hurdle comes in. I really hope the whole thing works out. Twin piston pumpin power would be awesome in the Baja! OBR has a short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taO5g_FgMPg&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

RE: Who has the fastest on-road Baja 5B/T around?
ORIGINAL: nitrohead5300 The young man who has the current big scale record for the ISC ( 97 mph ) didnt run a 2 speed it was a single speed, less rotational mass. In my opinion you don't need a 2 speed if you have a highly modified motor and a distance long enough for the car to top out.
Good point. That's certainly true but the main reason for the 2-speed is for the lower ratio gearing options it allows above the currently available non- 2-speed gearsets so in that sense it's a necessity. I'm running 19/55 and that's the lowest ratio (meaning fastest) gearset I can get without having to use an expensive metal spur which I don't want to do. Dark Soul does make some pretty big gears in metal like 22/52 and even 28/46, the latter recommended only for use with the Skopod 62cc conversion. But when you run big gears like that on a single speed you need a LOT of space to let it accelerate and wind out (although I doubt the 62cc has any problems) and it can wear clutches pretty quickly too. But the 2-speed gets the car going fast as it would normally in first with the normal acceleration and then shifts to second so for the average parking lot basher like me it is the most "streetable" and practical for normal driving while still being able to hit some respectable high top speeds. But yeah if you have a big gear single speed and a buddy driving you in his car to follow the Baja with a few miles of flat space very high speeds are certainly possible on a single speed but I can assure you in the vids above they aren't running stock 17/57 gears either. (I'm curious what gear(s) they were, if a 2-speed or not)

RE: Who has the fastest on-road Baja 5B/T around?
A 2-speed is more than just "advantageous"; it's a necessity. And all this talk about a lighter chassis isn't going to get anyone going fast. At least not by any significant amount. Going fast is a matter of gearing, engine rpm and tires that don't explode at high speed. You can have the lightest Baja in the world on stock 17/57 gearing and it will get blown away by a stock weight or even heavier Baja with bigger gears, with all other items constant. Gears and power/rpm are what it takes (what's that saying, "don't fear the gear" ) and the 2-speed is necessary to get the Baja moving fast in first gear so that it can pull a tall ratio second gear. With the new BSW gearing options it's going to get interesting.

RE: Who has the fastest on-road Baja 5B/T around?
BSW 2-speed, they have new gearing coming out soon - 26/48 for second gear. Hostile slicks with their zero growth foams if you dont have already are a must. I've popped several HPI Tarmac Busters and I was only running 19/55, no 2 speed (about 48mph). Actually I don't know how Hostile slicks would hold up on 26/48, you may need the FG slicks and AMS adapters, or you could go with BRP slicks and SUH adaptors. The FG slicks are smaller diameter so that would slow it down a little compared to stock 5b size tires. The 30mm crank in your 30.5cc wont yield the highest rpm. run a stock 28mm crank on a race ported 36mm top end which is a 28.5cc, the stock length cranks rev the highest.

RE: Baja 5bss clutch gear bolt
Some people are using the following 12.9 grade bolt below but I know some drill and tap for an M5 bolt. Or you could get the Turtle Racing clutch system which comes with a bell and M6 bolt (and gear plate and carrier, etc) which upgrades the entire system but the stock pinions and bells are not compatible so you have to use the Turtle Racing ones but it is a heavy duty system. http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/c.885035/n.1/it.A/id.2427/.f

RE: what torx wrenchs?
I use a Craftsman and Snap-On wrench linked below; the Craftsman is a little longer which is good for muffler bolts but the L-wrench gives better leverage for things like clutch bolts and yeah you can drill holes in the plastic shroud to check the head bolts if you like: http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00947213000P?vName=Tools+%26+Equipment&cName=Hand+Tools&keyword=t27&prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=L1 http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=76153&group_ID=19839&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

RE: Torn throttle plunger thing...relevant?
That torn accordian rubber boot is just a dust seal - it is not there as any kind of airseal (deja vu!). Its purpose is to keep dust and dirt off of the throttle slide shaft to keep the throttle action nice and smooth. And of course dust and dirt could possibly make its way into the engine that way without the boot or if the boot is torn but that little rubber boot isn't any kind of airtight seal and the engine's proper operation is not dependent on its installation and therefore it is not in the pool of trouble shooting items you need to consider.

RE: Zenoah G290RC, which seal's?
Ok got you on the G290RC. I've been running mine the last few months probably a little under 2 gallons or so. It performs very well - definately a solid improvement over a 25.4cc. I don't know what you have been running but I think you'll be happy with it - even moreso if you've been running a 23cc. Actually the stock G270 and the upgrade 36mm/28.5cc head have a lot of versatility because Zenoah designed a large squish (distance between the piston top and cylinder head inside) into them. The 36mm head can be used with a +1mm (29mm) "stroker" crankshaft with the stock base gasket which yields 29.5cc to get even more power from it. Or, if you want a 30.5cc, you can use a +2mm (30mm) "stroker" crank and a 1mm copper base gasket and for even more power. (I have that 30.5 on my bench patiently waiting for its chance to run so I can't comment on it performance wise.) So, you have some power options with only a crank and base gasket change if you ever want to increase the displacement down the road. What will you be running the new 28.5cc in? Did you get it yet?

RE: Zenoah G290RC, which seal's?
What Zenoah motor are you talking about? Do you mean the G270 which has the 4-bolt head? That is a 34mm head engine which is 25.4cc on the stock 28mm G270 crank. Or are you referring to a company that replaces the stock head with a Zen 36mm head which yields 28.5cc with the stock 28mm crank and they sell that, but is is not like that from the Zen factory. For the 3rd bearing in the Zenoah G270, the engine has 2 bearings on the clutch side. A lot of people say this 3rd outer bearing should be removed and replaced with an oil seal due to the risk of worn clutch shoe residue entering the engine through that bearing and causing damage. Supposedly the extra support of the 3rd bearing here isn't needed for RC use and the 3rd bearing is there for the engine's use in other applications. I have a Zen G270 which I installed a 36mm head for a 28.5cc engine. But I guess I am a rebel and live dangerously because I didn't replace that 3rd bearing with a seal. Guess I'll see how the engine does and I hopefully wont have to learn any lessons the hard way. If you want to replace that 3rd bearing with a seal use the larger oil seal from these two oil seals. Hope this helps: http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/c.885035/n.1/it.A/id.1278/.f

RE: Finally.....Bad fuel
I used a bottle of fuel that was about 7 years old which performed good as new although I hadn't opened it prior to that. And it spent those years in temps ranging from 10 to 95 degrees in a garage. I find it comical that so many suggestions for engine tuning help are to use "fresh fuel", what a joke. I've seen self appointed engine experts state that fuel goes bad after a month or two. How ridiculous. Yeah, and I'm Buzz Aldrin!

RE: Proud new HPI Baja 5T Owner
You're in for a lot of fun! Yeah those Killer RC kill switches are great and something I consider essential starting with the first run. The stock rear tires aren't worth a darn, they wear out too easily - I have never even run mine. Don't forget the engine "mesh mod" and some Outerwears for the air filter and pullstart. They even have one for the "mesh mod" if cutting screen and applying messy epoxy/JB Weld doesn't suit you. That mod will save you busted flywheel fins. I did the mesh mod but I may use Outerwears in addition to it because I sand blasted a coil down to the wire element causing it to fail because I run on the beach mostly. It also comes stock with 4 degree rear toe shims installed which is quite a bit when you look at it, you may want to switch to the included 3 or 2 degree rear shims. The whole clutch bell mounting assembly isn't the greatest; you may want to look into the Turtle Racing clutch system. It is pricy but it solves several problems and is a high quality product. And it is probably a good idea to check your diff for fluid if you arent already aware of those dry diff problems.
