RE: SU-34 Fullback
ORIGINAL: F106A Lee, I just checked with HL, they have the Blue SU-34. I ordered the airframe set as my green one is pretty bashed up. Will strip the stuff out of the green one into the blue one. They're running a 20% off sale, so if you're interested you can save a couple of bucks. Where do you get your batteries, I can't find a source. BRG, Jon
Hi Jon, Thanks for the heads up on the Blue SU-34..Check out the last page listings for the Rhino batteries @ hobbyKing.com...un-beatable prices. page link below. Looks like a good number in stock for either the 20c 3700 4s or the 25c 3700 4s packs. I got the 20c and they work fine...again be careful not to fly more than 4 minutes because 4 minutes can draw down as much as 3600 ma very close to cell damage limits... I really don't want to have to Y anything. Can my 12 FGA take advantage of the 14 channel RX somehow? Are there anyways to get around this? How would you set this up differently? Thanks! RE: Turbine or EDF
ORIGINAL: BobH Jack thank you for that information. I've know Bob casually for a long time even though I've never had a jet. I can say that he's always been on the leading edge of research and performance. As a personal aside when I called him to discuss the F-80 etc. I was having some medical concerns. His first question was ''bob what's going on with you?''. He was concerned about me as a person and not as a customer. To me that speaks volumes about the man. I still have some medical stuff to work through albeit minor. As for my jet of choice it still comes down to the F-80. You don't see a lot of them out there. Plus I have the dynamite photos of a very cool scheme. But having said that.. a question to you jet experienced guys. Would it be more prudent to get say the Electra kit and mechanical retracts ect. and fly it first for a while? And then get the F-80? I'm just wondering (probably overthinking is more like it). Thank you all :)
Hi Bob, Electric Jet kit..with retracts mechanical or otherwise I believe would be a great way to see what the EDF world has to offer. You'll get experience with the technology...it is differrent than either D/F or turbine. It is amazing how the technology is evolving!! A note about batteries...Lipo's don't like cold temps they will not supply the ma's the pack is rated for.. Nor do they like a flight that goes to long...and you ask the batteries to supply more ma's than the pack is rated for!! The over draw scenario is the one that will kill a LiPo pack quicker than anything!! Note: A very inexpensive way to experience a complex EDF with retracts is to order an SU-34 Full Back or the F-5 E from Hobby-Lobby.com. One or the other may be on back order my first SU-34 took over a month..But it was worth the wait. A Twin Vectored EDF...yes foam..Very fragile, but very detailed and impressive in flight. Obviously these EDF's are not speed demons, but mine will do the Cobra loops inverted and right side up on command and land on it's stinger tail pod..if you ask it to! I haven't read nearly all the posts on this thread..but good quality batteries at a very low prices are to be found at HobbyKing.com. HK has a hard time keeping batteries in stock..and I would suggest you don't place an order unless the amount of the type you want shows say more than 10 in stock. They will back order or you can change items but once you click buy your money is gone..No refunds! The Turnigy 25-30c and Rhino 20-30xc packs are very good quality and in some cases less than 1/2 the price you'll pay anywhere else...but remember never over draw a packs ma rating! Lee H. DeMary

RE: SU-34 Fullback
ORIGINAL: poussard How much movement on elevators and ailerons for low and high rate for Hobby Lobby Twin vectored fan
I just received my second SU-34..liked it so much had to get a backup...wished they had a blue camo version oh well:)) I've flown the HL SU-34 many times.... rates set for 100% and 65% for elevator / vectored thrust. I takeoff on the lower rate with vectoring ON. That setting gives you very good rotation and elevator control during both takeoffs & landings. I also have 75% expo on elevator in both high & low rates. If you takeoff or land on high rate....be ready for the nose to climb high very quickly even with a high expo setting.. Much better pitch control on the low rate. As for the throw amounts... I have mine set on high to the max...The pushrod clearance won't allow any more throw! The high rate and max movement is great for the cobra loop maneuver. The SU-34 comes out of the loop almost with zero forward speed and won't stall left or right..It wobbles left and right a few times but with the roll vectoring is controllable...then it gradually accelerates to speed. The only problem I have had is the poor quality & low C rating of the supplied battery. I purchase a couple of Rino 3700ma 20c batteries...and that solved the battery problem. A four minute flight consumes about 3400 to 3500ma the supplied battery is only rated at 3300 but won't live up to it's rating. Lee
ORIGINAL: xviper The jet still flies relatively decent even with the left motor not running up to par. I have to wonder if i have ever experienced what it is really capable of doing but while it does not set any speed records, it is still fairly fun to fly. I'll probably fly it until it dies and who knows, maybe some day take the time to fix it. Until then, i have an AK models SU-27 waiting to be built. Actually the warmest thing was the 14-gage wiring between the male Deans power plug and the two ESC's... RE: Hobby-Lobby SU-34 Full Back
A friend out at our field had an Amp / Wattmeter.we plugged it in between a Lipo battery pack that I could never fly with. The battery was a 30c 5000ma 4-cell pack...more than enough power to supply! By doing this the meter readings will show the max Amp draw and Max Wattage output. I have a completely standard SU-34 Full Back from HL. OK the numbers are at full power.. 64 amps / and just short of 1000 watts. Watts showed numbers varying from 960 watts up to a 988 reading. No wonder the supplied 3000ma 20c battery will not supply power for more than a couple of flights. I have my timer set for 4 minutes. and after one flight the supplied battery will be damaged!! In fact I purchased a separate second new (same as supplied) battery. It never would give me more than 2 1/2 minutes of 75% power or higher. I believe the battery pack being supplied with the SU-34 is over rated..And not really capable of 20c output. If a true 20-25c battery pack at a minimum 3300ma were supplied the airplane would perform as described. I tried a Rhino 20c 3700ma 4cell pack..it just fits the compartment, and I got 4 minutes of 85% full power flight. I had plenty of extra for a go-a-round..and taxi back. The finial numbers of power used after that flight was 3112ma used. The battery was just warm not hot! Actually the warmest thing was the 14-gage wiring between the male Deans power plug and the two ESC's... That wiring would be better if it were at least 12 gage..it gets hot and heat equals power loss! I still believe the SU-34 as supplied is a great value..Even if the battery is not all it should be. RE: motor- esc- battery- formula
ron... I have a twin vectored D/F SU-34 Full Back from Hobby Lobby...it flies great. The problem I'm having is Battery failures. It comes with a 4cell 3000ma 20c Lipo pack. Today I measured the Watts..close to 1000 actually 960. The amp meter said I was drawing about 63 amps. OK I tried a Rhino 4cell 20c 3700ma pack today..and it provided almost full power for a full 4 minutes..something that I can not get out of the batteries that come with the SU-34. Both have 20c displayed on the pack but one is a much stronger and actually works. What kind of battery pack should I be using for long lasting performance. Lee

I have gotten the very same flameout with smoke / fuel fail error... only mine came after sitting for a few months! After cleaning out the system with a few runs...all works great thereafter. I believe your problem might have something to do with your fuel pump maybe getting weak or a small leak at the pump. Lee

RE: Any one had older equipment cause fail safe on futaba 2.4 ?
6 servos on one channel?? Wow that should be a big problem with the new 2.4 voltage output...don't know how it worked at all. In fact even if you used one channel for each servo which you could do...with older servos the new 2.4's have problems with some older type / brand servos. Call Futaba and see what they recommend or wait a couple more days and this thread will shake it out for you. You could do a search because this has been discussed here and on Futaba's user's group Web site in detail. Count yourself lucky you didn't crash and burn! Note: If you really had a failsafe event you also could have battery problems..old or new batteries? Lee

RE: What is the best A-10?
MIBO...latest version 4 plus the Farm Cat modifications! This A-10 is just right!! BIG yes, a little heavy yep..But it flies like a BIG PUPPY. Lands here at altitude at a walk with full flair / pitch control. Light touch downs are a given. Egil (Eggs) is the owner (left) / pilot pictured with Jerry (center) & Ryan (right)..builder / painter. Maybe a little big & heavy for two P-80's but it would fly safely! Jerry did the build witch includes many modifications for the two Jet Cat P-200's. Yep, I said Jet Cat P-200's..but hold on the power is just right!! Yes, it will climb out straight up for a long time...but normal flight only requires about 1/2 power. Extra power is what this big A-10 needs. This model flies just like the real one's and there is always extra power for those short takeoffs / power climbs and just the extra power we all wish for! I've seen far too many A-10's of all sizes always seem to be under powered even if slightly. this one's not! Split / dual Tam smoke system. The Jet Cat’s start and run in tandem flawlessly! The RPM's stay in-sink at all times. One big roar with both @ full power. The landing gear has been custom machined for the higher all up weight. which is right at the 75 lb mark. All up weight was adjusted by limiting fuel load / tank configuration. The scale detail of this version 4 MIBO is complete! As you can see not much left to the imagination. Egil is very proud of his A-10 as he well should be. Next week Egil will bring his A-10 in under the AMA Experimental Permit to Fly regulations.. Ready for AMA events. I have been fortunate enough to witness the build process and several of the first test flights. Lee H. DeMary AMA 36099

RE: What gets the crowd going at a turbine demo flight?
ORIGINAL: icepilot Since the airforce flies F-16's over here, I get a lot of comments flying my SM F-16 1:6 as scale as possible - with the lights, afterburner and a smooth ride with some fast lowpasses will get a lot of attention. Especially a figure eigth in front of the public at high power with the AB-ring flashing - a crowd pleaser! [8D] and like Wayne says: A smoooooth landing will get them every time!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P39Q4uy4x_c Tor
This weekend here in Denver there will be an air show at our Metro airport / formerly Jefferson County Airport. Anyone reading this that can be there "be there" At least two F-16's from the Viper Group.. Hill Air force Base Utah will be putting on an air demonstration that you seldom see. Almost the complete routine is done in AB!! The first time I witnessed the demo was back in 2000 at Walker Field Grand Junction, Co. I have seen almost everything related to air shows in the last 40 years! These guys from the Viper group show you performance parameters that are not published and rarely witnessed for the F-16. I had no idea an F-16 could perform like they make it! The demo lasts less than 15 minutes and they will land nearly out of fuel! I asked the pilot who flew the routine in 2000 how he could stand that kind of G-force for those extended minutes...he said without the G-suits pumping to the max, it couldn't be done. He asked me that day if we would take a picture of him with my BVM MIG-15...you know Vipers Eat MIG's:)) Lee

RE: Hobby-Lobby SU-34 Full Back
The vector 1 plugs into your Flap channel the vector 2 into the aux channel. The two errors I found in the programming setup for the DX7 were negative rates instead of positive for Prog. Mix 1 and Prog. Mix 2. Those settings are necessary to achieve the proper movement for thrust augmentation for both Roll & Pitch control. I also preferred to switch both Aileron (roll) and Elevator (pitch) augmentation on / & off with one switch rather than the two they recommended...so I set all four mixes to SW: Flap2 just my preference. Boy the tight figure 9 (cobra) loop inverted is awesome to watch...very tight and NO tendency to break off into a stall...it just follows it's nose right on through. Once I get confident it's going to do it every time on queue I'll work it down to near ground level. Also I tried a couple of landings with the thrusters ON and Wow did the nose respond well, again with NO tendency to stall off on one wing tip or the other. I'm already waiting for another version of the Full Back color scheme!! Xviper.... flip back a couple of pages they show you what direction the thrusters are suppose to go with Aileron...same as the aileron surface for each side. Thrusters of course go up & down same as Elevators. The only major thing that Futaba does is the Throttle....make sure you REVERSE the travel not the normal position. I also have experienced an out of sink boot up between the two fan controllers. But if I unplug the battery and plug-in again it seems to then come to attention! Both fan units seem to be running at almost the same RPM's as there is not much pulsing sound from the two fan units. I notice a little at power settings around 3/4 throttle. Lee

Hobby-Lobby SU-34 Full Back
I received my SU-34 on the 6th:)) one evening to assemble for flight, maiden flight today! Density altitude was over 8,000 MSL here in Denver. Wow it flies great only tried a couple of Vectored maneuvers and found the aircraft to be stable and no tendency to stall or snap out of tight figure 9 / cobra loops. CG is right on per factory equipment. The landing gear comes pre-adjusted and the lock adjustment is perfect. Also noticed some silicone grease now on the lock blocks good idea for lasting. All the work is done for us assembly is a breeze. The only slight goof I found was in the programming included for the Spektrum 2.4 7chanel transmitter. The Manual is very detailed & complete compared to other electric D/F's in the HL series. I now have five of the Jets offered, little Panther, (2) F-5s cameo & Swiss, F-4 still in the box, and the Su-34. In my opinion these products are well engineered & executed. I can't believe amount of engineering that when into this product..For the money it can't be beat! Lee H. DeMary

RE: Hobby Lobby edf jets
The F-5e ready for your receiver version is a great value. Yes, you have to carefully adjust the retract landing gear...to make sure the locking block does not over or under throw. Note: The first cameo version I flew crashed within two flights do to the main power plug causing an intermittent connection. Hobby lobby replaced the complete airplane and paid the freight both ways!! The replacement cameo F-5e now has over 20 flights on it everything working great. The F-5 is a great flying and landing aircraft. The fan unit that comes stand works fine, but sometime I plan to get a higher-powered motor. A little more speed would be great. I have flown the standard out-of-the-box F-5 at density altitudes well above 8,500-runway altitude being slightly over 6,000 MSL. Note: I did replace one retract servo on the replacement F-5 because it failed during a basic servo stall test. I do a stall test with all servos that I use in any of my airplanes...a full stall test is simple and over the years, I believe has saved me several in-flight servo failures. I like the F-5 so well I purchase another one with the Swiss color scheme. I also have the fixed gear cameo F-4 and the new twin vectored SU-34 fullback, back-ordered:(( Notice the advertisement for the SU-34 Hobby Lobby stating the use of Dean's Ultra plugs not knock-offs...the Knock-off Dean's is what caused my first F-5e to crash..it just quit and went in like a lawn dart. Wiggle the plug and everything worked..wiggle it again and nothing worked. In my opinion "for the money" this line of EDF Jets have good value...and if something is wrong.. provalbly wrong Hobby Lobby stands behind there products better than any other manufacture / distributor I have dealt with in years. RE: feds considering banning turbines?
ORIGINAL: invertmast
Of course, this is my first look at this NPRM, if it is a notice at all. From knowledge of how the FAA writes things, it always says you canNOT do anything unles, "A,B,C.. etc". So in my very quick initial look at this, it may appear that they are saying unless you operate under the guise and rules of the AMA, you may not fly turbines. There are some other little bits of language there that reek of massive regulation and red tape and unsustainable compliance that may threaten all civil model airplane activity. Don;t be scared for turbines, be scared for model aviation! We do not want any of this.
Yea thats basically what i was saying, I just forgot to mention the ama as accepted and was in the process of editing my post as you typed this :)
The key phrase is NPRM... someone in the swamp is getting happy with the keyboard again! RE: Hobby Lobby F5-E Tiger
ORIGINAL: wind junkie
ORIGINAL: ddavis60 Has anyone experienced problems tracking the F-5 down the runway for takeoffs? The front gear on mine just will not stay straight. This is not a servo travel problem as I have the travel tuned down to 10%. The front gear will not stay straight due to "play" in the connections.
Yes, mine will not take off straight unless pointed DIRECTLY into a 10mph (or more) headwind. My maiden flight was on a narrow road with curbs (big mistake!)
Sure enough mine does the same thing, but by holding up elevator as it accelerates with no cross wind (head winds preferred) it stays fairly straight. I always set my rudder / nose wheel steering for 95% exponential which also helps. For sure the problem is the all-in-one design of the retract nose gear.

RE: Were to buy?
ORIGINAL: jason There are some Chinese knock offs around which are no good at all. I have only seen the M/plex connectors in that light green and occasionally in red. The pins on the Chinese ones do not flex and bend instead which makes for a bad connection also the plastic has a lower melting temp which makes them tricky to solder. Assuming you only want them for battery leads then I would take a look at some Deans connectors. Jason
There are Deans knock offs also...they are darker red, the contacts are poor quality...little to no spring action and the plating causes intermittent contact....the worst of all worlds!
