Spot on Adrian! Amongst it's odd claims to fame are its only 'kill' being a RAF Harrier which had to be shot down after its pilot ejected and in an exercise it successfully intercepted a Concord.

Sorry I was so quick Ernie... the Fleet Air Arm was an obvious source for making the most out of aircraft past their sell by date. Unfortunately they were not unique. Anyway on with the quiz... I'm looking for an aircraft..... 1. Single seater, twin engine monoplane 2. Despite a long active service, it never shot down an enemy plane

Damn that was fast!!! and correct on all counts. Amongst the other things Cheshire achieved: Flew 102 bombing missions on the Whitley, Halifax, Lancaster (including 617 squadron), Mosquito and the P51 Mustang. On his 103rd mission, he was the official British observer of the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki. 5 Group was renown for low level high accuracy bombing and Cheshire was one of the key personnel in developing the techniques involved. His VC citation included Cheshire flying his Mustang above cloud to act the aiming point for his squadron to bomb an obscured target. Following the war Cheshire became an ardent pacifist and amongst other achievements formed the Cheshire Foundation Homes for the Sick, now known as Leonard Cheshire Disability.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
And we have a winner! Well done Herbs. I'm looking for an airplane... 1. It had two engines counter rotating to reduce engine torque effects. Interestingly they had to reverse the direction of rotation for better yaw stability. 2. It was involved in 1949 incident with the People's Republic of China. Two Hornets were scrambled from Hong Kong following the PLAAF shooting down of a Cathy Pacific C-54. 3. It used a specially modified version of a very famous engine to reduce drag. Rolls-Royce Merlin 4. It was one of the last piston engined aircraft to enter service. It was pretty much neck and neck with the Hawker Fury Other clues: 5. It was the first twin engined aircraft to regularly operate from (including landing on) an aircraft carrier. It rapidly became obsolete and was replaced by the DH Vampire. 6. It was the last in a line of aircraft using construction techniques developed in a 1930's racing aircraft.(The plywood balsa sandwich made famous with the Mosquito but originally used on the DH88 Comet.) Quoting Eric "Winkle brown: "Circumstances had conspired against the Sea Hornet in obtaining the recognition that it justly deserved as a truly outstanding warplane...in my book the Sea Hornet ranks second to none for harmony of control, performance characteristics and, perhaps most important, in inspiring confidence in its pilot. For sheer exhilarating flying enjoyment, no aircraft has ever made a deeper impression on me than did this outstanding filly from the de Havilland stable."

It's only when you see the answers everyone comes up with you realise there are several solutions. Anyway no-one right so far but you are all circling... I'm looking for an airplane... 1. RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
ORIGINAL: makmov Eric Melrose ''Winkle'' Brown Flew more different aircraft than anyone in the world. Retired from flying at the age of 70 but still teaches aerodynamics.
Correct of course Makmov and you are up. A few notes on Eric Melrose Brown 1. His first flight is reputed to be being stunted by Ernst Udet in a Bucker Jungmann. (To clarify, he was stunted by Udet, I'm just not convinced it was his first flight.) Brown son of an RFC pilot and fluent in German got to know Udet and other Luftwaffe pilots in the 1930's. He was in Germany at the outbreak of war, fortunately near the Swiss border and was escorted there by the SS. 2. His last 'flight', to date, was in a F35 simulator. See his interview here: http://www.key.aero/view_feature.asp?ID=7&thisSection=historic 3. In between he achieved a feat that will never be surpassed. He flew 487 different aircraft not counting variants (a full list can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_flown_by_Eric_%22Winkle%22_Brown. he also achieved the feat of 2,407 carrier landings! 4. In 1938 he saw the demonstration of the Focke-Wulf Fw 61 helicopter flown by Hanna Reitsch inside the Deutschlandhalle. He subsequently met and got to know Reitsch. 5. In his earliest operations he shot down two four engined aircraft, which he was subsequently decorated for, before his squadron was disbanded following a torpedo attack. He shot down two FW 200 Condors flying Martlets from HMS Audacity before it was sunk by a U boat. Only two of the pilots survived the sinking. 6. He was one of the few pilots to fly the Arado Ar 234 Blitz bomber. as commander of the 'Enemy Test Flight' he also flew the the ME 262 and 163 7. Towards the end of the war he assisted in the interrogation of the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp Commandant and his assistant. (Josef Kramer and Irma Grese) he started ""Two more loathsome creatures it is hard to imagine" and described the latter as "The worst human being I have ever met". He also interviewed Wernher von Braun, Hermann Göring, Willy Messerschmitt, Dr. Ernst Heinkel., Kurt Tank and top Luftwaffe fighter ace, Erich Hartmann. Some other notable achievements.... He was key in developing RN carrier operations, he was the first to land jet on an aircraft carrier and promoted the steam catapult and use of the angled flight deck. As a test pilot with RAE Aerodynamics Flight he made major contributions to the understanding of compressibility, leading to his involvement with the UK supersonic programme, A quote on the P-51 Mustang "The Mustang was a good fighter and the best escort due to its incredible range, make no mistake about it. It was also the best American dogfighter. But the laminar flow wing fitted to the Mustang could be a little tricky. It could not by any means out-turn a Spitfire. No way. It had a good rate-of-roll, better than the Spitfire, so I would say the plusses to the Spitfire and the Mustang just about equate. If I were in a dogfight, I’d prefer to be flying the Spitfire. The problem was I wouldn’t like to be in a dogfight near Berlin, because I could never get home to Britain in a Spitfire!" One of the most amazing characters in a time when it seemed commonplace. Over to you Makmov!
