RE: should expo be used on 1st time trainer?
Reducing the throw by moving the control rod to another hole is just as bad as using dual rates, you loose the maximum throw to get yourself out of trouble in an emergency. I still suggest using the most throw on control rod setting and expo on the stick. Of course, this debate can go on forever with no mutual agreement. That's why there's an off/on switch for expo. Try it and if you don't like it, turn if off. Bill

RE: should expo be used on 1st time trainer?
bassmanh, you raise a good point, but I'll have to disagree that a new pilot using expo is a bad thing. New pilots tend to over control their planes until they get a feel for flying and using expo tends to soften that over controlling to a certain extent. Personally I do recommend using expo to a new pilot until he gets more experience and can more easily get him/herself out of trouble when using high rates or non-expo. YMMV, though. Bill

RE: should expo be used on 1st time trainer?
Just make sure when you set up expo that the throws around center stick movement are LESS with expo turned on and not MORE. Depending on your radio it could either be minus (-) or plus (+) expo. To test this, move the stick just a little to one side and turn expo on and off. When you turn expo on the control surface should jump back toward the center position slightly and when you turn expo off the control surface should jump away from the center position slightly. Bill

RE: CAN I USE AN RX
marwin1, I have landing lights (2) on the LE of the wings on my planes. I use the main flight battery to power them. I plug in the battery the lights come on, I unplug the battery and the lights go off. I use these lights to help me with orentation during a flight. It's easy to tell if the plane is coming toward or going away from me. They're also a good indication whether or not my flight battery is still plugged in after a flight. However, my point is, you can use this site to determine what size resistor to use based on the various specifications of the LEDs you plan to use and the source voltage. http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz Bill
ORIGINAL: lbarnes [snip] I guess it is a toss up, same could be said for Li Po in a plane that isn't turned off... Larry
This is true also. That's why I opted to install "Landing Lights" on the LE of my planes. The lights get their power from the ESC side of the main Deans plug. The lights are on when the battery is plugged in and off when the battery is not plugged in. Lets me know at a glance whether or not the battery is still plugged in. Bill

If you forget and leave your transmitter on with Lixx batteries it will be killed. Kinda expensive to replace. If you forget and leave your transmitter on with Nixx batteries all you do is charge it up again. Otherwise, people seem to like them, but apparently for some other reason. I'll never use Lixx batteries in my transmitter. Bill

RE: Landing on a Grass Strip
A prop saver can help if your plane doesn't have a cowl. Or, large, thin wheels. At least 3" in diameter. Those that come with the Slow Stick and E-Starter work very well in grass up to about 4" tall. Cut the motor just before landing so the prop isn't spinning at touchdown. If you have break off on your ESC then turn it on. That will stop the prop and will also improve you glide ratio. Bill

RE: nimah or nicad in transmitter pack
First off I agree with you about not using disposable batteries. They are too expensive to just throw them away and I don't believe they last as long as a good quality NiMH battery at full charge. Second, I would recommend any brand of the NiMH "pre-charged" type of battery. This type of battery isn't as susceptible to self discharge as the regular (older) types. I run Rayovac Hybrids in my Optic 6 Spectra and can get as much as 12 hours run time before the low voltage alarm sounds (although usually I recharge them after about 6 hours or when the voltage is around 9.6 volts). Another good brand of pre charged battery is Eneloop by Sanyo. There are any number of places where you can get this type of pack built for your transmitter, or you can buy individual cells and use a battery holder from Radio Shack, which is what I did for my Optic 6. I would stay away from NiCD as that's an older technology and also are bad for the environment when you throw them away instead of recycling them, as most people do. Bill
ORIGINAL: ZRAT Graet Planes Model # GPMQ5000, got mine at Hobbytown USA, they've been good about ordering non-stocked items as long as they deal with the OEM, free shipping too. Works fine, I needed the mag job for EDF rotors, the fingertip one work on all the 6''+ props I've tried, not as accurate but gets rid of the power robbing vibrations.
In reference to the fingertip prop balancer, instead of using your fingertips place 2 tall water glasses side by side on a level surface like your kitchen counter and place the balancer on top. This will eliminate the friction caused by your fingers and it then should work with any size prop. Bill

RE: Wiring
ORIGINAL: Willit Run 353 {snip} I am guessing that the red wire goes to read so does the black and the blue goes to the yellow. if it spins in reverse then swap the red to the black.
That is a very dangerous statement... If a person doesn't read it very closely they may get the impression you are speaking of the red/black wires going to the battery and revers them instead of the motor wires. The best thing is to just say; "Ignore the colors and connect all three wires in any order to the motor. Then, if the motor runs the wrong way, swap any two." Safer that way and takes the ESC to Battery leads out of the equation altogether. Bill

RE: Slowstiick assembly questions.
ORIGINAL: kuplo Thanks for the information. That would be why my first slowstick took so long to put together. I applied the GWS glue rather liberally to places like that fiberglass bar that sits on the rear of the main wing and it took like 2 days to fully cure and harden. I'm using Zap-0 CA+ supposedly safe on styrofoam and foam and now ''odorless'', and slow cure. So far so good with this stuff. Allows me enough time to reposition the item many times before it's ''stuck'' in place. Funny though, it seems to cure quite fast on my finger tips which always seem to get some on them. {snip}
The reason super glue cures faster on your fingertips than in the open is the moisture on your skin acts like an accelerator. If you want it to cure faster on your plane spritz it with a little bit of water. Bill

Audio/video tape has a very thin metal coating on it (how else could you record to it), so it's possible it could change the "length" of your antenna. Personally I wouldn't use it. However, YMMV. Bill

RE: Video interferance
If both your video and radio are on 2.4G then it's very likely that's your problem. Those two items operating on the same band and in close proximity very well could be interfering with each other. Bill EDIT: Well, in looking up your transmitter specs it seems it's FM and not on 2.4G, so forget the above post.

RE: ParkZone Slo-V vs. GWS Slow Stick
I think you'll be very satisfied with the Slow Stick, Paul. Also, my Slow Stick is my AP plane. I mounted the battery behind the motor and the camera mount under the CG of the plane. That way I can fly with or without the camera without having to readjust the CG. All my batteries for the SS are the same size (Flightmax 2200 mAh, 3S, Lipo), so the CG doesn't change with battery changes. A lot of people will mount the battery under the CG so they can use different size batteries without CG adjustment. Bill

RE: ParkZone Slo-V vs. GWS Slow Stick
I think they are basically the same plane except for the tail feathers. I think even the wings are interchangeable between the two planes. I have a Slow Stick but not a Slow-V. However, I have flown a Slow-V once and felt it was grossly under powered with the stock motor. If you're planning on using a brushless, then it should be okay. The only other thing I don't like about the Slow-V (and this is only personal, not a flaw with the plane) is the "V" tail. I always have problems with the mechanical trimming part because you have to trim both control surfaces equally for the plane to fly properly, and I always get confused which way to trim for rudder vs. elevator. With a conventional tail plane like the Slow Stick mechanical trimming is a no brainier... Adjust elevator for up/down trim, adjust rudder for left/right trim. YMMV Bill

RE: Is the Wild Hawk worth the money?
I don't have a Wild Hawk, but I've seen others who do flying it. As a general rule the Wild Hawk is worth what they're asking. It's an Easy Star knockoff and flies very similar to one. The foam isn't quite as robust, but repairs are easy enough. The equivalent EasyStar RTF Electric Parkflyer is $190.00. http://www.hobby-lobby.com/easystar-rtf_7009_prd1.htm However, if you're willing to spend $190 for the Easy Star I'd suggest the Hobbyzone Super Cub instead for about $170. http://www.hobby-lobby.com/super_cub_rtf_rc_airplanes_21640_prd1.htm?pSearchQueryId=88344 Bill
