RE: Byron Mustang
Got a few more.. Broke it down and did some weathering..the FM came out very bright in the pics but in reality it looks more matt. *Edit* I think maybe its too much weathering on the ID stripe compared to the letters and #'s. My intent was to have alot removed from the front of the vertical stab..Im going to leave it for now but may fill in some black as it may be too much in realtion to the rest of it.

RE: Byron Mustang
Nice guys.. Ive been away with life and work. Ive picked things up again, and started riveting some more, and did some eye candy just to get inspired. The riveting on the body is about 90% at this point, and I should finish it up this week. Some minor FM work then on to dry transfers and completion of the painting.

RE: Byron Mustang
Hi Guys.. Just recently turned it around and did some riveting and working my toward completeing that..as well I layed out the checkers on the front and will paint them the next nice weekend im around.. Unfortunately I havent put the time on this that I used too..Being single and working NYC kind of keeps most of my time..Its sort of on the shelf for now as I just have so much other stuff happening. Its ok for me though as it will always be here and I can always pick it up again.. I also picked up the Corsair on the buy and sell forums awhile back..I had a vision of modifying it to being "more scale" one day..Otherwise it looks really cool in my place as I have really high ceilings and everyone that comes around thinks its pretty cool..LOL

Stiffening a Fiberglass Cowl
I could use a little help.. What sthe best way to stiffen up or take the flex out of a fibre glass cowl? Its pretty flimsy as it is now.. Im thinking carbon fibre or 1/8" thick balsa strips maybe? Is there a preferred method? Thanks

RE: Byron Mustang
Started working on my model again now that the holidays are over. Did the windscreen surround..I didnt realize that I left it too wide on the back side of it..looking at pics of the real plane this is pretty narrow.. Also did the bleed air outlet on the right side (where you see all that black spew on the real ones..) started riveting the right side as well. Ill probably paint the cowl after a few more FM pieces and simulated access points.

RE: Flite Metal
I ordered Aero Foil and got it right away..It takes a little to get used to..It looks and reacts the same as FM when installed as far as weathering and scuffing etc... Ive got both AF and FM installed on the same plane and youd never know the difference..(the chin and wing root are AF) The reason I had to go to the AF was that I wasnt able to get more FM and got no response fron the vendor..Some guys seem to have better luck then others.. They each have their own nuances, and the more you work with either one, the better you get with it...Im pleased with the end result of using both.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Thanks, I did see a thread on building a tailwheel and I may wind up going that route if it comes to it..Some of those guys do some beautiful work.. Was there ever a work around for the doors that anyone came up with? Im assuming its part gear (seems like most guys are using the robart 150), part scale/kit related..Seems like a pretty big miss to have to leave the doors off.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
I wanted to ask as I just bought a Byron Corsair out of the buy/sell listings, with the intention of doing some minor work to it..mostly on the landing gear to make it look more scale. No one seems to put the scale main gear doors on, is there a reason for that? Just curious..Im guessing its some sort of clearance issue with the landing gear or mains.. Also I see alot mentioned about the Earle Aune tailwheel but cant seem to find where to buy one if I wanted.. I guess I should also finish my Mustang before starting something else but...[:)]

RE: Byron Mustang
Im pretty sure it was..I remember I called them and they made a recomendation..Im pretty sure it was for the TF as well..I can check my old receipts.. In my case I dont think you could do anything with the cockpit, but I could easlily make the radio part removeable if it had to be..You would just have to remove the canopy..

Ha..thanks Jeff.. Actually the second side went faster then the first once I really got the hang of it..I dont like working with it though as I think its frustrating at times, but one can be pretty handy with it once you get used to it.. Im also going to paint my wing as well except for the airlerons and flaps, as well as the two large stress panels on the bottom.. Stuff is alittle heavy though..

RE: Byron Mustang
Thanks for the compliments Fred.. Mark, I use acryllic washes..and sometimes even pastels, and shoot clear over them so it stays.. Ive "worn" some specific areas at this point, but will do the panel lines and rivets on the whole model eventually after I paint on the cowl and black band on the tail and rudder. Nothing major just enough for it to stand out some. If you dont like something you can remove it with thinner or even windex, and with the flite metal, you can just scotch brite something off if you really wanted to get it back to square 1..I removed some of the details around the hatches in the previous photos as easily as I put them on..(I thought it was overdone) just trial and error until you get the look you want.

RE: Byron Mustang
Its rock solid I love it..I got it off of the buy and sell forums..I screwed it to my table with a couple of "L" angles.. I spent all afternoon working but it doesnt seem like much got done..Finished the underside of the chin and added the access doors to the bottom of the plane..also painted the rudder the correct color and did some weathering from the engine cowl back..it really doesnt show up with the flash, just subtle dirt on the panel lines..
