RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Thanks for the Bday wishes guys. Celebrated on board ship. Bob there are 4 main stations anyone of which can take control and then there are one of these each side on the wings for docking. She is 1068 feet with 130' beam and with azipods and thrusters they dock her with no tugs slicker than we could a 20 footer. Bill

Sounds good Bob. Glad my S.W.A.G. seems to work. I'll be away for a while on the briny but anxious to hear how sea trials go. I've been working on this build and sea trialed her this past Sunday with great results. I just made the rod and reel this morning but not sure if I am happy with it . Bill

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Steve, Not sure what you meant about part C. The plan calls for it to be even with the deck. Real boat had it even with the cabin side. If you make it the height of the cabin sides you have to figure how you will remove the cabin for access. What I did was make a separate piece that goes on top of part C and between the cabin sides and comes up with the cabin. see pics of real boat and mine. Not sure when you say part K are you saying the Keel was to long? Bill

Bob, Midwest used the 22" hull for the lobster boat, the bass boat and the shrimp dragger. They are small but very easy to transport and sail nicely . Here is my current fleet all based on that hull. also what the bass boat will look like. Ruckus is my design cabin to look like a PEI lobster boat. Bill

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Steve, I use nothing but Ca in all my builds. Find it faster and not influenced by temps and mix ratio and has excellent adhesion. You can either sand the primer off or if daring spay a coat of the color and then attach the spray rails and finish painting. On one boat I wanted to not have to cut in a different color spray rail so I painted the hull and rails separately and then put masking tape where the rails would go before sparingly using Ca so as not to get excess on the paint job. The masking tape gave a reference for placement as well as helping keep off the excess glue. The Ca will stick well to paint although severe contact with a foreign object might jar it loose. ;) Disclaimer: All opinions expressed here are only those of the author. Bill

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
The thrust bearing is just the nylon washer that has been discussed. It really only does any good where metal will rub against metal when running. On my Dauntless the only place that occurs is between the stop collar and the end of the stuffing box. That of course assumes you are using a stop collar. A stop collar is needed any time you have a slip coupler such as the Kardan or dogbones. Without a stop collar the shaft can move back and the coupler will come apart. Btw it is a good practice to have a little bit of end play or lash to make it easier on the motor bearings. If you have a hard coupler the shaft cant back out so no stop collar is needed and therefore no thrust bearing. At the other end of the shaft I have no metal to metal contact so I did not need another thrust washer.. My props are about 3/4" past the struts . if you have a lock nut or collar behind your prop and up against the strut than a thrust bearing would be good there also. Mention was made of actual bearings vs a washer but they would not be practical in such a small size. IMO. Hope this helps and is clear. Remember that the pointy end is the bow, for nav lights: port wine is red, and for buoys BPOE (black port on entry) or RRR (red right returning) for navigation Can Dead Men Vote Twice for Compass + Deviation = Magnetic + Variation = True ;) Bill You all might get a kick out of this true story about nautical terms. We were dropping anchor one time and my dear wife was on the bow to do the honors. She lowered the Danforth and I reversed to pay out line. I told her "make it fast" meaning to belay the line on the cleat. She got highly irate and told me " if you can do it any faster you get up here!". :) :)

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Ahem..... avast ye landlubbers fore I have ye walk the plank. ;) A chine in boating refers to a sharp angle in the hull, as compared to the rounded bottoms of most traditional boat hulls. The term hard chine indicates an angle with little rounding, where a soft chine would be more rounded, but still involve the meeting of distinct planes. In other words where the bottom and sides meet. Bill D

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
DF my only experience with led lights is those that came on my rtr Atlantic. I didn't like the heavy wires coming out of the bulb and they seemed to be to bright. I haven't put lights on Dauntless but I have on my lobster boat and added mast lights to my Atlantic tug. In both cases I used grain of wheats and run them on 3v. If they have the life you described I would think you will never have to replace them. After all how often do you use them. I always run the boats in daylight and the lights are hard to see and not worth having them on. To me they are more of a "gee whiz" item. JMHO Bill

Rich, I hope they do faster service on your motor than they are doing on the connectors I need for my 208Ds. I ordered them on Thurs and requested ASAPand they haven't shpped them yet. I might have to sea trial Red Baron with an esc that I have with lower power. For what they get for their connectors you would think they would ship out the door in less than 3 days! Bill

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
DF, you are correct in most cases the davit would be kept rigged but in Dauntless case that seems it was not the case. I doubt the dinghy would get much use on a commuter yacht running between Tarrytown and NYC, there just is no need when going from dock to dock. There most likely would be a simple block and tackle stored aboard for if needed. A small dingy could be lifted easily with a block and tackle without a mechamical aid. On my dauntless I thought the davit looked naked without any rigging so I put a block (thanks Rich :) ) at the top and ran a line through it and fastened both ends on a cleat I attached to the lower part of the davit. RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
OK, here's the smarta that thinks he knows it all. First I am not sure that Dauntless had that anchor chain pipe when first built or if it was added later. the plans only show doors to the locker forward. It would be vey unusual to have 2 holes in the forepeak like that as there would likely be tangles between anchor rodes and also you would not put out 2 anchors. The multiple chains in the St Croix pics were most likely put out to moor her there in the event of more storms. Dauntless carried a Danforth type anchor and we all know it was stored on the foreward cabin top. When using a Danforth anchor a short length of chain is first attached to the anchor stock and is to provide weight to hold the stock down then the anchor line is attached to the chain and that style anchor requires a lot of line. That anchor does not hold by weight but rather by digging in the flukes. That is the reason for the chain and long line so as to pull on angle. As for storage underway no professional crew would have the anchor chain and line on deck. it would be stowed in it's locker in the foredeck. that is why you see the anchor on the cabin top without any attachments. Anchor lines lying on deck would be a slip hazard and also not present seamanly appearance. It's sort of like running with fenders or lines over the side, sometimes known as Irish pennants. :) Now!! I know the S&S plan calls it a windlass but my understanding was that a windlass is horizontal and a capstan is vertical, Be that as it may I believe the capstan would be used to tie off mooring lines also. Fore and aft lines are usually led through chocks to keep them pulling in one direction and not running down the rail. It also prevents wear on the rails. Spring lines are not lead through chocks normally on pleasure craft but may be through fairleads on bigger craft. DF, it is interesting how that bowlight was mounted but i guess it was to get it above the lip. I assume the pipe support carried the wires to the light. Nice work on making the light fixture BTW.

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Rich, the armrmature is the wire wrapped segmented part on the shaft. the commutator is also on the shaft so basically you would be replacing the major part of the motor . all except the magnets , brushes and can with bearings as i see it. You might find a motor shop to rewind the armmature but i would guess it would be expensive. They do large electric motors and starters and the like. bill

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
The commutator that the brushes contact are divided into segments with a wire from the armature going to each segment. I guess I would try just rotating the shaft slowly rather than spinning it to see if that dead spot is always one segment and if when past it the motor wants to start. You didn't encounter this problem when you were breaking the motors in? If you would like I could meet you in Stamford and loan you my can of Power Shot electric motor cleaner spray. I guess you won't be going to the club picnic on the 16th. I hope to make it and have the new boat ready for trials. Bill

Rich, those really out perform the Krokers! They also seem even quieter which I didn't think was possible. If the problem isthe motor than I would think it would be in the brush/commutator area. BUT be sure to rule out the esc. A possibility is it is not sending enough starting current. Bill

Looks good in the stills, Rich. no video? Does that motor do the same in reverse? How about also swich Esc leads to be sure it is the motor. I would also try taking everything off the motor terminals and just try jumpers from a battery. one last thought could be a weak brush spring. Bill
