RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?
My Giant P-51 had more throttle than rudder so advancing the throttle too quickly would cause me to run out of rudder. The throttle must be managed on takeoff amazingly just like a real P-51. Imagine that! You don't want a model that is too easy to fly or it won't need a pilot and it would be boooooriiinggggg!! I don't mean to sound fat headed but I prefer not to have too much mixing and do most of that with the sticks. I was talking with the late Miles Reed one day ( everyone knew Miles!) and asked him about mixing and coupling and he said that he used absolutely none!

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?
The Kaos 60 is not available in ARF but you can buy plans and it is a great plane to learn to build. The Kaos 40 is a great size that will fit in any car. It is cost effective due to the smaller size and will give you some advanced flying skills on a budget. The Killer Kaos is is also superb. The GP Ultrasport 60 ARF is a real winner and can accomodate retracts: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJ584&P=7 Also the always popular Topflite Contender is a super flyer that will perform the full Pattern routine. Don't laugh this one off! I am dead serious. The Contender will make you look lika a pro. VERY easy to build and for $100 it can't be ignored. Designed by Dave Platt. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHU90&P=7 If I could give one bit of advise for the beginner pattern flyer I would suggest looking at any model with an upright or horizontally mounted engine with side exhaust simply due to ease of operation. Inverted rear exhaust engines require special attention that is not necessary for someone just starting out. I have personally built and flown all these including a couple TIGERTAILS, a CURARE, and a SWEETATER. Loved the Curare. Also a couple Dave Brown "Phoenix" ships. I also just for fun built a Kaos 90 from plans with a O.S. .91 FSR and tuned pipe with retracts. Very big but flew just like a Kaos.

I also forgot to mention that you can't go wrong with a Super Kaos 40 or 60. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXZT80&P=ML Possibly the best selling and greatest sport pattern ship of all time.

All the big stuff shows up at the field and I show up with a Lanier "Shrike" with a 7.5cc DF engine on a pipe and I get a standing applause. I also like it when a jet jock challenges me to a speed dash. I may not win everytime but I give the crowd a big suprise showing a prop comparred to a turbine.

RE: LHS Rant!
The term ARF should actually be ( 90% of the time) ARFU All Ready F'd Up !!! I just finished up a complete rebuild on a Great Planes Viper Q500 and maidened it today. 6 weeks ( on my schedule ) to completely tear the fuselage apart and get it right. What a total POS. I didn't save any time with this ARF! The Lanier Predator II was of much higher quality and Great Planes bought them out and dropped the Predator and kept the Viper. Viper probably cost a dollar to make and the Predator cost $2 so they dropped the Predator. I had a Great Planes 1/3rd Pitts 50cc that was pretty nice. I now have a Goldwing 50cc Ultimate that is pretty good but they ALL needed some TLC. I just bought a ACE 1/4 Clipped Taylorcraft KIT here on RCU and I am really looking forward to the build and there will be no doubt as to it's structural integrity when it is done. The internet has become a goldmine for vintage kits like this. Stuff you absolutely will not find at your LHS.

RE: I am depressed!
Just personal preference and availability as far as battery type. Do you think my LHS would have had that in stock and ready to sell? From their past track record I would say "NOT!!". I guess from my perspective it seems that having a "complete" HS you would need an enormous inventory and a highly educated staff. Especially when it comes to special and specific items. It seems that in the earlier years of this grand hobby there was less technology, less options, and because of our recent tech explosion the LHS has paid a dear price in order to just keep up with it all but I can state as fact that if it weren't for the internet my flying would be on hold for a majority of the time due to "what is that!" and "we don't carry anything like that!" or "never heard of that!". The LHS owner is simply tailoring to the needs and requests of the majority of customers that walk in the door...and what do you think that majority is asking for? Generic OTC hobby stuff and gizzmos. Part of my problem is that I live in the boonies. Again..the internet saves the day for this situation. My intentions are not to bash LHS owners but rather to ask a single question: "Has your local HS turned into a toy Store"? I'm not really depressed. Just speaking figuratively and it makes a forum title that catches your eye.

RE: I am depressed!
True...the 1000 mah AAA is not a common over the shelf item for a LHS but I stated to the attendant I would be willing to utilize a smaller capacity battery. All I could hear in the background was shuffling, mumbling, and confusion. Last week I went to the same HS for some APC 9x6 props for my 424 quickee pylon racer. Now mind you a 9x6 prop is a common item. None in stock and when I inquired about ordering them the OWNER said they had not ordered that size/brand prop in 6 years. This HS is in a large city in N/E Indiana and there is a local club that flys 424 pylon. I'm sure the locals are going elsewhere for their supplies too. I like to go to my LHS with my business first but for the last year it seems to be an act in futility and I simply go online. Now take this into consideration. This same HS has an online business and they do a very large volume of sales online but walk in the same store off the street and you get nothing. I am keeping the Hobby Shop's name confidentialsince it is not my intention to bring anyone's business down. Times are bad enough the way it is these days for business owners. How is it at your LHS? Have you noticed a transition from a true "Hobby Shop" with a knowledgable staff, to becoming a "Toy Store"? I know sales are important but can't you have the best of both worlds when walking into your LHS? I guess I may be a bit pretentious here since I have never ran a Hobby Shop. I'm sure it is not easy or every corner would have a Hobby Shop on it. [:D]
