RE: balsa wood
I'll second (third?) the Balsa USA recommendation. I've been buying from them for years and have always been happy with them. They also make some very nice kits.

RE: Composite design factors
[quote]ORIGINAL: tony-howard One of the best books on composite structures the I've seen is: Composite Basics by Andrew C Marshall Published by Marshall Consulting 720 Appaloosa Drive Walnut Creek CA 94596 My copy was purchased in 1994 and finding a copy may not be easy now. It is intended for full scale homebuilt design, but it contains a wealth of information for any composite structure designer. It's well organized, easy to understand and has one of the better sections on cloth weaves. Edition 4 includes carbon fiber. RE: Fiberglassing with Bondo brand resin
[quote]ORIGINAL: daven I use laminating resin for fiberglass all the time as I normally buy it by the gallon. It does not remain tacky, and gives me a great finish. Finishing resin dries with a waxy surface that some feel is easier to sand and give a good finish, but laminating resin works just fine. RE: Fiberglassing with Bondo brand resin
I'm very far from an expert on this but I thought that for fiberglass covering for painting that you wanted a finishing resin. My understanding is that the laminating resins stay tacky.

It's interesting that you go right for the chopped mat instead of a 4oz cloth or something like that which I would think would give you a smoother surface. Is the chopped mat due to the complex shape?

I built mine stock and it flies fine. I think I have an OS 70 4S on it. You do have to stay on the rudder and be carefull though. http://gallery.bidinger.org/v/RC_Planes/Current-Fleet/Smith/

RE: Transferring template to wood?
SeeTemp is a nice material for creating templates. It's a clear plastic of some sort that's easy to cut. Place it over the plans and either just cut it with a blade or trace the part and then cut it. http://www.seetemp.com/

Where are you guys buying your Deft Lacquer Sanding Sealer? I've been all over town and I can't find it anywhere. I've tried: Menards, Home Depot, a True Value, an Ace Hardware, and a wooodworking specialty store.
