RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
Very cool aaroncmh! You're going to really enjoy the plane. If the elevator is a bit twitchy, check the CG again. The plane is pretty tolerant of being a little tail heavy but you pay for it with a twitchy elevator. I flew mine a bit tail heavy to help with landing it. But I wouldn't recommend that until you have a few flights on it.
ORIGINAL: aaroncmh BTW SpinnerRow, how did you get the spinner to work on the DLE? The two brass inserts that came with mine, one is a tad to small and the other is a tad too big. Along those lines, how did you get it to fit over the prop? Thanks for your time...
You're not going to like this answer but I had an extra insert from another spinner that just so happened to fit

I'm torn between another P-51 and a 70" Revolver with a DLE 20 in it.

RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
ORIGINAL: aaroncmh I was planning to get a 16x7 which was what I had on the P-47 but I'll probably get the 15x10 on your recommendation. Does the 15x10 make the landings any hotter? I think I'll be fine but I don't want her coming in too fast until I get used to her.
Well the 15x10 will make it a bit hotter on the landings but the flaps take care of that. Where you notice the difference between the 15x10 and at 16" or 17" prop is the take off. Its a bit slower (also more scale like) but with a DLE 20 on a 10lb plane, who cares? A 17x6 would probably give the plane unlimited vertical, a 15x10 won't do that. Big speed difference between a 15x10 or 15x11 and a 17x6 though. I set my plane up for top end and took off and landed on high rates and flew it on low rates. My roll rate was about what a beginner trainer would be and the elevator was probably slower than most trainers but at speed that is the only way to get the smooth low strafing runs that I loved to do with that plane (at least for me).
ORIGINAL: aaroncmh BTW are the retracts a joke?! I keep waiting for them to collapse or quit going up and down...they gotta do something wrong at least once right? Ha, ha they are way better than the ones that came with the H9 P-47. I found the right servo horn and tightened the set screws at the right length and that was it. Actually I probably shouldn't post this...I'm sure the next time out they'll collapse...or maybe get stuck up on the maiden...that'd be sweet.
I flew mine off of grass for a year with the mechanical retracts. The struts that come with the plane aren't that high of quality and a rough landing will easily bend them. A few times I took off and hit something on the runway hard enough to move the wheel back far enough that it wouldn't close. Once I burned a servo up due to them not closing properly, I bought the electric retracts and that is the way to go. Keep me talking about this plane and I'll end up buying another one. I have a DLE 20, servos and receiver to use..... Hmmmmm
ORIGINAL: BR1 Spinnerow Remove the cylinder, remove the rear crankcase half. Then use a flat tip punch on the outer bearing race to reseat the crankshaft bearing back into the front case half and your feeling of a bad bearing or bent crank will be gone.
Ok, that will be interesting to see if that is all it is. The plane went in at about an 60 degree angle so I assumed the crank was bent but I guess it could be that it is squishing the bearing! Man that would be killer if that it turns out to be!
ORIGINAL: BadAzzMaxx Are you sure the crank is bent or just the prop hub bolt, 90% of the time it is just the prop hub bolt and can be re alined very easy. When you rotate the crank, it feels like there are a couple of bearing balls that aren't completely round if that makes sense.
ORIGINAL: cmptrguy What reinforcements did you do to the rudder and elevator on the Drastick Cmptrguy
The rudder and elevator are stick built and I put a bunch more sticks in it and more balsa at the bottom of the rudder where it connects to the fuse as that seemed pretty fragile. The rudder control surface I built from scratch and it is about twice the size of the stock version. These planes have a reputation of fluttering the elevators due to the way the pushrods work on the plane. I put carbon fiber rod over the pushrods to make them stiffer. I didn't build this plane for speed or I would have put something like a 16x8 or 16x10 on it. I built it for climbing power and it has lots of that. Fun plane but the elevator and rudder are fairly fragile on them. They need re-enforcing. I made the rudder bigger on mine and put the rudder servo in the rear and then there is the best mod of all - the ES Composites Tuned Pipe. I can turn a X0ar 17x6 in the upper 8K range. Its a rocket on the verticals. I also made my own landing gear (as I've done for years) which is about 2" taller than the gear that comes with the Drastik. The bigger one makes the motor sound more like a DLE 30 - more deep and resonate tone and the compact sounds about the same as the stock muffler but takes 300rpm off the top end. I had to use the compact pitts in a World Models P-51 to clear the cowl and it worked well. I plane to try the Valley View wrap around Pitts next.
ORIGINAL: aerobear
ORIGINAL: mach2 <a target=''_blank'' href=''http://www.tech-aero.net/ultra-ibec''>www.tech-aero.net/ultra-ibec
From all reports this is a great product backed up with great service. On the other hand, for the $45 purchase price you could instead get about 1400 of [link=http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Fairchild-Semiconductor/1N4007/?qs=ZbYWOjW8mGpgsSEErKxdmfUH0OoFY7oB]these[/link]. That's enough to equip 700 planes with a ignition voltage reducer suitable for LIFE type batteries. If you only need enough for a few planes then your local electronics shop can set you up for a buck or two. Using these with a separate ignition battery will increase your plane's weight by a few ounces over the Ultra IBEC. If that's a problem then there are usually other, cheaper ways to save that much weight. Nothing wrong with either choice, just letting you know there are choices.
I pay seven cents a piece for them at my local surplus electronics store. Just walk in, get a handful for a quarter and out the door. I then use the extra power cable supplied with the DLE engines to splice it in and hook up to the switched side of my switch. Some people like to have a ready made product but I like to go DIY when I can.

Flew it five times today. NOW THAT IS WHAT I'm TALKING ABOUT! Man, it is crazy how much of a difference a few hundred RPM makes on a plane. THat Xoar was rippin' a bit on the down lines. Engine itself is very quiet now and off idle, the carburetor is louder than the exhaust. At idle, all you hear is the whirrr of the prop. Blip the throttle and the carburetor makes a nice "FEED ME" sound. Very nice step up when it comes on the pipe to. More than a few were impressed with the combo today.

DLE 20 With ES Composites 26G Pipe
I have a DLE 20 with about a half gallon of fuel through it. I got right at 8100 with the stock muffler and 8800-8850 on the pipe. Tune was set right before it would 4cyl on the pipe so it was set a bit rich but the way it sounded coming on the pipe, had me worried about it being lean. Very nice combo. Pricey, yes but very light. Thrust calculator says about 16lb of thrust and on the 9lb plane the engine is on (.60 size Texas RC Planes Drastik), it already had unlimited vertical so it should be just about perfect now! I'd like to thank aerobear on here for his help and research on this combo. He has a nice sliding header setup that he uses to dial in a header length really quick. Thanks man!
