RE: Skymaster ARF Plus 1:5 scale F-104G
Anton, Can you find out what thrust line the guy with the P-200 is using, and if he was using a full bypass or not. Thanks, Jan

RE: CARF Ultra Lighting
Rodger, I suppose what it means is that the turbine will always be perfectly centre and lined up with the pipe. Was mainly wondering about rigidity and longevity of such a mount. Given that, how is the bypass held to the airframe? Cheers, Jan

RE: CARF Ultra Lighting
Hi guys, I believe the engine mounting is actually done by mounting to the bypass ducting - no turbine mounting rails. If this is true, what is the general opinion? Cheers, Jan

RE: DS8511 oscilating
Hi there, Here you go, this is where I first noticed the 8511 problem http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9255600/anchors_9275404/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9275404 When I had the problem, it was on a new installation, including new twisted extension leads. In fact I removed the servo fom the plane, put it on a servo tester. At first nothing happened, then after a while it simply started oscillating all by itself. Rather worrying, I have about 20 of these servo's installed in various jets and just pray they don't start the same thing some time in future. Cheers, Jan

RE: Skymaster T33 First flights
Gonzalo38, I think the wing walking that you are referring to is only on the ground - correct? If so, I believe the problem is under carriage and /or wheel alignment related. First, if the oleo pressures are too low then the plane will rock side-to-side like that when direction changes take place. Second, if the nose wheel is under load, like with heavy braking or when the plane has a negative AOA on the ground, you can induce that kind of wing walking with nose wheel direction changes. Finally, and this is what I suspect, your wheels are aligned slightly toe-out, perhaps more so when the under carriage is under load, which translates into an occilation from side to side as first one wheel and then the other let's go from tracking outwards. May I suggest you try two things before you try to 'fix' the problem with a gyro of sorts; - give the main wheels a bit of toe-in. - get the nose to stand a little higher. If that still don't help, increase the oleo pressures in all the oleos. Hope you find a solution mate. Cheers, JanR

RE: New wireless airspeed/flameout monitor w/ audio
....so am I , with great interest. The fact that this is providing information to the pilot that can be used during the flight, without the assistance of someone else, and the fact that it is not 'interfering' with the flying of the plane, is great. Cheers, Jan

RE: Moki Engines Thread
Hi guys, Just installed a Moki 135 that I have had in stock for at least 5 years. I have a Bisson muffler fitted and I have run it rich thru twice on 16 oz of 5% nitro and 15% oil fuel. The first run I had a 16x6 MAS prop and the second run a 16x8 MAS prop. The model is a sport float plane and weighs 6.1 kg (about 14lbs) - what prop would you guys suggest I use to fly with? Thanks for the help. Jan
ORIGINAL: Gonzalo38 I've been looking at this system for a long time now but its still difficult for me to see the advantage over a normal installation in a big plane. RE: Skymaster T33 First flights
Hi guys, Now that so many of you have experience with the big Skymaster T-33, do you agree with the cg at 190 to 200mm? What bou the control throws as per the manual? What is the final realistic weight when installing all the bells and whistles? I also notice that most are making modifications to the tip tank mountings, any more suggestions? Thanks for your advice. Jan

RE: 18MZ User Manual....
Hi guys, Does anyone know how (if at all possible) one can adjust the tension of the LST and RST controls. On my 14MZ these controls were nice and easy to move with my forefinger whilst flying, but on the 18 they are terribly tight. On my 8's (which had the same problem) I could easily get into the Tx case and manually soften these controls. But I don't really want to go digging in my 18 to do this. I hope I am just not seeing how to do this in the manual, as I cannot believe Futaba can allow such bad operation on their flagship Tx. Cheers, Jan

Futaba 18 MZ - RST and LST friction adjustment
Hi guys, Just unpacked my new 18MZ and the first thing I noticed was how very tight the ratchet is on the RST and LST controls. They are terrible and one can almost not move them with your forefinger. On my 14MZ these controls were nice and easy to use, but on the 8 and now the 18, they are crazy tight. On my 8's I could easily get into the back of the Tx case and then manually soften the ratchet, but I don't really want to go digging in my 18. Does anyone have any suggestions, or am I just missing the easy way to do this? Cheers, Jan

RE: F-104 as first turbine jet? : )
Mate, No problem, if you can see it (don't fly it too far away) and you know how to use a throttle to control altitude and attitute (not elevator), then you will have no problem. Many years ago my second turbine was a Philips Avonds F-104 and I had absolutely no problem with it. Have fun, if the F-104 you fly as your first turbine is anything as good as the one I flew, you will enjoy it. Cheers, Jan

RE: Futaba - Robbe - S Bus
Craig, Small world; I believe you are refering to Colin in Robina - we fly together at LARCS. I am about to start on my Big SM T-33, followed by a Big SM F-86. Both jets have many moving surfaces and my 14MZ is starting to run out of all the options I want. Like yourself I am buying an 18MZ at the moment. Again, you're just that one step ahead and it will be good to gleen all I need from your and Shane's experiences. Recently I completed a CARF Tucano on which I also followed a lot of Shane's (however no S-Bus) suggestions, together with other prominent turbo prop pilots here on RCU. BTW, I'm at Willow Vale, north west of DreamWorld, kinda next to Upper Coomera (or if you want, in-land from Pimpama). If you ever come this way, look me up and when I visit my son in Perth at the end of July, perhaps we can catch up too. First the intro of 2.4 broadened my 'old' modeling ways and I believe S-Bus is the next revolution in RC to bring the rest of my modeling habits up to date. Since building and flying my first turbines in 1997, the installations and reliability of our equipment have become so much more simplified and user friendly. I guess all my new, unused non-SBus servo's will have to be used in prop planes and the like, not to mention all the 14 channel rx's I have. Cheers, Jan

RE: Skymaster ARF Plus 1:5 scale F-104G
Anton, That is looking good. The F-104G now has the right attitude on the grond and the undercarriage is all sorted nicely. To have it all 100%, how about putting a pilot in the cockpit? Can you show us more photo's so that we can seen the systems and turbine installation and all the hatches removed. It will also be good to see where you have the fueltank installed. What flap were you using on that flight? Any elevator compensation? Cheers, Jan

RE: CARF or Skymaster
Hi there, I don't agree with most of you. I have put together many Skymaster kits and a few CARF ones. Give me the Skymaster product any day. John and Anton are fantastic to deal with whereas my CARF experiences have never been good (and that has nothing to do with our local agent). The CARF products are overpriced and under built as ARF's by comparison to Skymaster. However, both products are good flyers whilst the CARF product always feel sportier and the Skymaster more scale like on the sticks. Cheers, Jan

Anton, Very nice. But don't you think that you will loose some cooling around the jet pipe with the exhaust setup. Can't see that too well, please take a photo from the back to show us how you are mounting the exhaust nozzle. It will also be good to see th nose section closer. Regards, Jan

RE: AMT 180 turbine blades rubbing...question
ORIGINAL: txshan130 Hi All, Also does anyone know how AMT charges for overhauls? About how much to overhaul an AMT 180? Do we have to pay VAT tax? Thx, Brian
Brian, If it is an original AMT180, then it is not an AMT Netherlands turbine, but one manufactured and sold by AMT USA. The importance of this being that AMT Netherlands may or may not be able to assist you with the engine as the two companies were not owned and operated by the same guys and only shared the AMT name for a short time. From similar experience with two of my own AMT Mercury's (made in the US before the advent of AMT USA), Bennie at AMT Netherlands has been very helpful, but not always comfortable with some of the work I required. The AMT 180 and the AMT Mercury HP are not the same and components are not completely compatible. If Bennie can help you, he will. You will normally not have to pay the VAT in the Netherlands, but you may have some charges on your side when it comes back into your country. Cheers, Jan

5 Blade conversion and V Bar on Tubine Hughes
Hi guys, I have a Tubine AirStar Hughes 500e which I've been flying with a normal 2 blade head. Recently I acquired an Align 700E with a V Bar 5.2 system installed on the flybarless machine. Absolutely incredible stability and performance. As the V Bar system needs a pure swash setup, ie. three servos for pitch, I am thinking about converting my Hughes to 5 blades an installing the V Bar system. Has anyone one done this on a multi blade (scale) Tubine heli? Thanks for your comments. Cheers, Jan

RE: Composite ARF Tucano Build
ORIGINAL: bevar Jan, My friend Lukey hated the 4 bolt set up too and modified his to where the front of the canopy hooks into a brass tube that runs across the fuse and he now just has to install the rear two bolts. Pablo has commented that we should try a BVM hatch latch on the rear part of the canopy to eliminate the last two bolts. That sounds good but I question how much the bolted in canopy adds to the integrity of the fuselage. Do you think not having the canopy bolted in would make the overall fuse weaker? I do not know... Beave PS. I'll have Luke post some pics of his canopy latch design later today.
Beave, That will be good. Must admit, I have not considered the fuselage integrity issue. Quite possibly what CARF had in mind when they designed the current fixing of the cockpit/canopy. I suppose one could reinforce the fuse and use a pin and latch method. I have now replaced the four bolts with short 8mm stainless steel bolts. At least it reduces the time it takes to screw them in. Cheers, Jan

RE: Composite ARF Tucano Build
Hi guys, I have now had 6 flights with mine and it is a wonderful model. Definately a keeper. Only have one bugbear; I hate doing up the canopy with the 4 bolts after starting. Do any of you use a different method, and if so, please post some photo's? I have been considering the use of 1/4 turn latches, but finding the right ones in small quantity seems to be a problem. I am aware of one guy using the usual dowel and canopy latch method, but personally prefer a way to still use the same holes in the fuse, as the bolts. Must say, if I was doing the grey kit, I would no doubt change the attachment and make it a lot less fiddly than it is now. Cheers, Jan
