RE: Old Rhienbeck Aerodrome on the 8th
Great photos! I especially liked the all silver Cessna 140. What a beautiful model!! Don't bust my bubble and tell me it's done with monocote. That plane brings me back to the 50's when I was working as a mechanic at Amherst Airport, north of Buffalo NY. Best days of my life. Couldn't drive a car yet but flew all over western NY.

RE: Great Planes Seawind Water Takeoff Tips
Cyntec, I have to agree with you on looks. When I bring my Seawind down for a low pass along the beach it's a stunningly beautiful sight. Just follow the directions I directed you to in my previous post and I think any water handling issues will be absent.

RE: Great Planes Seawind Water Takeoff Tips
ORIGINAL: jollyroger Sell the Sea Wind and find an Ace Sea Master kit either .40 size or the larger 120. You'll be much happier with one of these than wasting your time trying to get one of these pieces of junk from Great Pains to R.O.W. I've seen several people attempt to fly these and they are indeed a handful and in some cases , nearly impossible to ROW. Personally I wouldn't waste my time of that overpriced piece of Chinese made junk. Stay away from the Neptune from Maxford...another poorly constructed piece of Chinese made trash......almost non existent hot glue, poor control surface mechanics, wing attachment poorly done. Probably made by some 12 year old kids working 18 hours a day in a Chinese sweatshop for 25 cents an hour.
Jollyroger, I completely disagree with you. I just bought a Seawind from a friend that was having fits getting the plane off the water. I did some research and had some online discussions with other Seawind owners and found that the Seawind, handled properly does a beautiful takeoff and flies like a dream. There are numerous threads on RCU in the "Great Planes Seawind" post that address how it's done. Primarily either remove or greatly reduce the size of the water rudder, advance the throttle slowly and DON'T touch the rudder during the takeoff run. All this while heading dead into the wind. Look at posts 1258 and 1259. I did what JRF and ALO 111 instructed and had a great flight yesterday.

RE: Great Planes Seawind
The landing left a lot to be desired. I was getting to close to the beach and literally forced the plane onto the water. Bad thing to do. Several bounces untill it finally stopped. Actually my first landing with the plane before I modified the rudder and followed your instructions was a beauty. I made the approach with full flaps and literally tried to keep the plane from landing just a foot or so off the water. Once it ran out of flying speed it settled onto the water very nicely. I can hardley wait to get back to the lake.

RE: Great Planes Seawind
Jim and ALO 111, I flew the Seawind today. A beautiful, light wind, sunny and warm day (sorry ALO 111, your days are coming soon). Anyway, I followed your instructions to the letter after having trimmed the water rudder size way down to about 1" in blade axial length. The plane had a slight drift to the right which I believe may be the result of the rudder not being perfectly straight. At any rate, no water loops and a nice smooth takeoff. Thanks guys for the advice. I was thrilled.

RE: Good sport jet for a fair price ?
Strap a P120 size turbine on the Reaction and you'll have your high speed jet with reasonable landing speed and a plane that can handle paved and grass runways.

RE: JR 8911 vs 8711
According to the Horizon web site, the 8911 is a high voltage servo (6.6 to 7.4 volts). Torque is still in the 400 oz in range. Specifically designed for batteries like two cell LiPo etc.

It was a spectacular weekend weather wise . Can't thank Karen, Sue, Jeff and Mike for that but every other aspect from the organization to the evening apre flying entertainment was first class. Thanks guys and gals. What topped my weekend was the three F-22 scramble takeoff with Bob, Brian and myself. Lets do it again in Maine!!

RE: Leaf Blowers - brands?
My Black & Decker 18 Volt blower was reasonably priced and has been working fine for 3 years. It does a good job of blowing dirt and gravel away from the back door step so the dogs don't track dirt into the house (wifes rules) and fits nicely into the inlet to cool the turbines. The only issue is the rather long nozzle.

ALO 111, that is a beautiful, no- stunning picture. We,re in the late summer cool down phase just before Fall. We've been fortunate up here on the top of the world. Sufficient rain to keep lakes full. By the way, I've always wondered how to you people stay on the bottom of the earth? Being on top it's not a problem. [:)]

RE: Great Planes Seawind
Thank You guys. What you have explained makes perfect sense. I was considering putting a gyro on the rudder to keep the plane straight but maybe the aileron is a better place for the gyro. It can certainly act faster than I can to keep the wings level.

RE: Great Planes Seawind
I recently purchased a GP Seawind from a friend. The plane has a Magnum .91 on it so I'm sticking with that engine for now. A Saito may be in it's future. What I need from the experienced Seawind flyers is the takeoff technique. On my first flight the take off consisted of a series of water (ground) loops until the plane gained speed and finally got itself straight and took off. The flight was exilerating with a little aileron trim. The landing with full flaps, a piece of cake. Again, the takeoff leaves a lot to be desired. I've read and heard diffenent methods of getting off the water without the on water acrobatics. Some say easy on the throttle. Others say full throttle from the start. I've heard "don't touch the rudder", "full up elevator", move the CG, change the thrust line and on and on. What works?

RE: Seaplane debate
What you need is a plane that will draw some attention. A tiny little electric or a glow powered toy won't cut it. Something you can be proud of because you built it yourself and it has some BALLS! How about a 125% North Star with some serious power.

RE: Capitol Jets , it was great!
Frank, all the Thanks goes to Karen and you for the organization of this event and to your support staff for their excellent performance. Yes it was hot but the flying conditions were excellent. I went home on a high after many successful flights with only a scuffed chin on my R54, That nose gear would fold at the slightest provocation. Must be something in the runway surface sending up bad vibs. My personal thanks to Mike and Jeff for their assistance all weekend and Karen A, you get an A+ for your Strawberry Margaritas.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit
Legnum, I still see the potential to pull the retract mount plate and wing skin away from the W6 rib sandwich. There doesn't appear to be enough contact surface to hold that skin/gear mount plate to the rib. The load that the gear puts onto that system wants to pull the retract assembly to the rear and will take your current mount arrangement with it unless you put the triangular blocks in where the W6 rib meets the gear mount plate. The triangular blocks should be in the kit and are shown on the plans. I think the blocks are 3/4" triangular sticks the you will need to cut into segments to fit.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit
Legnum, I have built two R54's and I see something in your wing that troubles me. You have eliminated the triangular brace blocks at the plywood sandwich on rib W6 in favor of small traingular pieces of plywood. I suggest that this is a poor idea since the reinforcing blocks add a great deal of support for the gear mount. I have had my share of hard landings and runs off the paved runway. The first area to fail is that area. With the gear loads you will want as much support in that area as possible.

RE: Dreamworks complaint
After the Plum Island Jet rally I needed replacement parts for the Pro Link struts I have on my jet (don't ask!!). I spoke to Linda who refered to Todd. They were willing to disassemble in stock struts to get me the parts I needed. Option; Todd offered me complete replacement struts at a very attractive reduced price. The struts are currently someplace between New Smyrna and Vernon CT. Absolute top notch customer service. My first stop is always Dreamworks and only if they don't have what I need I'll look elsewhere (a rare occasion).

Very nice looking Kingfisher. But why do people put the pilot in the front seat in a Cub. A Cub is flown from the rear seat.

Great job Jason. It's good to see younger pilots with the enthusiasm that you have. I'm embarased to say that your landings are light years better than mine. Now you can start thinking about this years upcoming band season. I hope you do as well with band as you do with jet flying. Damn, this summer is flying by.

RE: Balance tap on P-100 ECU battery?
I'm using a Hitec X4 charger and the balance plug from my LiFe 2100 plugs into an EH adapter, P/N 44154. I don't know if that is Hitec exclusive or not. The adapter came from Tower Hobbies.

RE: JR 370a Gyro on nose wheel with Futaba 12Z?
Shaz, been thinking about this gyro issue and what we have said about the 370A is all correct. However what didn't occur to me is the gain lead to the receiver is there so you can adjust gain in the air from your transmitter. I have a cheapy GWS gyro that doesn't have remote gain and it just plugs in between the servo and receiver. Gain is adjusted manually at the gyro. I think that is why aquaskiman suggested the GY240 gyro. My guess (only) is the GY240 does not have remote gain.

RE: JR 370a Gyro on nose wheel with Futaba 12Z?
Shaz, I agree with the others. You do need a dedicated channel for the gain. Is there any way you can "Y" like functions like ailerons or elevators to open a channel?

RE: JR 370a Gyro on nose wheel with Futaba 12Z?
Man, you're stretching my basic knowledge about gyros but I'll try to answer. "Gain" as I understand it is simply the amount of response that the gyro inputs to correct an unwanted deviation from the flight path. Call it sensativity. In other words, on a rudder for instance, at low gain, the gyro will only deflect the rudder a small amout to correct a yaw. At high gain the rudder will be moved a greater amount. Softer vs harsher correction. In my 12X transmitter I have rudder gain control mixed onto a 3 position switch and I'm able to set the gain values in the same manner as you would for dual rates for example (In this case triple rates). I'm told that I can put gain on a dial and get more linear gain adjustment. Haven't done that yet because I'm not clear in my mind how to do it. Hopefull someone with more knowledge about gyro's will chime in and educate us both more.

Robin, I'm one of those sissies that cancelled because of the weather. From what I have learned from Jeff Lynds it is a fantastic place to fly. Nothing but good reports from everyone. Knowing this I'm sure that if you plan an event for next year many more will attend. I will be there even if I have to ride in Jeff's trailer.
