RE: How do you teach?
Everything said has been very good and I'm very certain we have great instructors posting on this thread but; you all have missed one very important item to be a great teacher. Praise your students no matter how small their improvement may be. A pat on the back and a compliment goes a long way! Steve

RE: discussion: gas power trainer
I think it's a great idea. I train newbies all the time and for the most part they hate the glow planes rather quickly. Not the way they fly but the mess, the cost of glow fuel, charging ignitors, etc. We have a lot of gas guys and they see how much easier it is than glow. I could also see it used by better pilots as a tow plane or float plane. Put a nice block in just aft the wing for floats. I'm not a fan of having a lot of dihedral, most of my students progress so quickly that it quickly becomes a slight pain to begin percision aerobatics. From a looks standpoint I would prefer softer lines on the tail feathers but that's just me. Please no CA hinges, and a two piece wing! I'm in for a PNP to use for training and float flying! Steve

RE: LiFe or Lipo with regulator??
ORIGINAL: Doug Cronkhite I still prefer Li-Ion for Rx packs myself. I run Fromeco products, as I think Kurt puts together about the highest quality power system I've seen.
+1 I also like the fact that I can actually check the pack voltage under load. I only have one jet but many gas planes, never had a problem with any of them. Steve
ORIGINAL: junkjet Any pics of a Rabbit install??
Here is my Rabbit install, did have to turn the engine 180 degrees so the logo doesn't show any more. One update; We have been planning four flight lines, we will only be having three. There is a problem where we had the forth line so we were forced to merge it with another. This is completely out of our control, just a sod farm issue that had to be solved. See you soon! Steve
ORIGINAL: grbaker You'd be surprised how much good will can be won by buddy boxing a few of your club members on your jet. Let 'em line up and pass the buddy box around. It makes a big difference how active you are in the club, also. Do you attend club meetings regularly? (I'm bad about this one) Do you participate in work days out at the field? (I've gotten better about this) Do the complainers show up for work days? All things to consider.
I do much more than my share around our club. I'm the safety officer (have held other positions), the web master, I head our training program (we train every Tuesday afternoon), and I cd our largest event , it takes about 20 hours a week for 3 months to put together. If anyone want to attend it's in a couple weeks.... [link=http://www.larksrc.com/clientuploads/Spring%20Fling/Spring%20Fling%20Info.pdf]here is the event flyer (pdf).[/link]. RE: In need of some wise mens thoughts
Great replies....Thx! I do come to a stop while taxi, most of the time it's because our field is so rough that moving at a couple mph will hit a depression and stop. Some times it can take almost a bump of 1/2 throttle to get it moving again. I'll just shut her down after landing and walk out to retreive the plane. On take off I can throttle up from a blast protector and get rolling, we have room for that with no safety issues. The new jet idea I'll run it by my boss :) Steve
ORIGINAL: Dr Honda I kind of fell into this myself. I enjoy my club, but AFTER I got my waiver, they decided that it was going to be a non-turbine field. In need of some wise mens thoughts
The main club I'm a member of (and we do have a lot of different flying styles here) the field is pretty rough. Not too many jets have ever been flown here. Now that I have my first jet, a shock jet, it flies just fine off this bumpy field. I have put about 20 flights at this field and most of the members do not have a problem. Most love watching! We have never told anyone to not fly a jet at our field, just be aware of the field conditions. All of a sudden I've heard through the grape vine that a couple people don't like the grass (weed & sandspur) burn that my jet has left on the runway. The burns heal in a couple weeks, I do fly almost every week though. The start up I can handle with a piece of aluminum used as a deflector. What about the runway? How do you grass fliers handle this issue? I want this headed off before it becomes a club problem. Thx, Steve

RE: TBM Shock Jet
ORIGINAL: bw5493 I just got my Shok in the mail last week, now I am just waiting for my new P70 to arrive and the 100 ounce tank before I can finish it up and start my Waiver training. Anyone with the P70 had to shim the motor? Also, do you have any pics of your install? Does the fod screen fit without surgury?
I do not have a P70 but I am running a JC Rabbit. I relocated the blind nuts about an inch aft, I use the fod screen, did no surgery to the former. I have all three of my batteries as far forward as possible, I have no cg problems. I'm now at 34 flights and each one has been perfect. Best of luck, your going to love it! Steve

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Funny thing today. I have been flying 30 to 35% gas planes for about three years. I recently built my shock, I have been so excited that the shock is about all I've been flying. Since Feb. 19th I now have 32 flights on my shock. Interesting enough the excitement from the speed is gone, it seems rather ho-hum in that department but it's still a blast to fly. Today I flew the shock two times and pulled out one of my favorite gassers. Flip the prop and she fired right up (good ole DA). On take off I rolled knife edge about 10 feet off the deck and started my knife edge circle...I pushed harder and harder on the thottle until it was maxed out. At that point I felt like the plane had no power (which it has plenty). I rolled level and did a full throttle pass down the runway.... man it seemed like it took forever to cover our 600 feet of grass runway. I actually flew the gasser with caution today because everything seemed so slow. Funny what nearly 130mph will do to you, it made all my other models under powered ;) Steve

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Today I was able to get an actual MPH on my shock using GPS. Topped out at 128mph, I'm running a JC Rabbit V100 with the thrust reduced to approximately 15.5lbs. Anwered all my questions as far as the speed thing goes. Steve

RE: Fuel line
ORIGINAL: joeflyer   The absolute best material is Viton.  It will last indefinitely in fuel.  It will swell slightly after soaking in fuel so make sure that you safety wire all connections.  I get mine from McMaster-Carr.   Joe
I'm new to jets but in gassers we already know how well Viton works and long it will last. I used it in my first jet and it's perfect, no problems in this application either. As you know it is much more flexible than Tygon and the BVM clunk line stuff I received was very stiff in comparison to Viton as well. McMaster Carr is a good supplier, if you don't want to hunt and only need a couple feet I would suggest Red Aero RC.... these guys are great and they certainly support the RC hobby. RE: TBM Shock Jet
Was there just a few week ago... welcome to the jet world! Many told me to use the ca hinges provided, others said something else. I couldn't bring myself to ca hinges, sorry but I cam from giant scale as well. I used Robarts, little more work but they work great and I'm not worried about them failing. BTW: The hinge slots are not cut, at least mine were not. Careful to hinge the flaps at the very bottom of the surfaces otherwise you will not get the throw you want (70 degrees). As far as the p70 I have no idea, I used a JC Rabbit V100 and had no problems with the install. I would be happy to email a few photos if it helps you in some way. Welcome aboard! Steve
