RE: HOB ME109.....Plastic Fuse Top Painting
What clear top coat would you recommend? I think Parma makes a clear coat that ought to work over the color. I would assume that since the fascolor tints are fuelproof the clear would be fuelproof also. All of my HOB kits have that clear plastic fuse top. I am thinking that the plastic should be painted on the outside as doing it on the inside gives it way too much shine. I will try to do a build thread on the P 47 or FW 190 whichever is next. I do need to get their P 51. The P 47 or FW plans have the P 51 plans on the back side so I guess I could scratch build it with those plans. I can't wait to fly these planes as I have read some reviews and they are all very positive. One fellow called the P 51 a "total screamer" to fly. I guess I will have my younger brother fly that one as he performs way beyond me on the flightline. The building reviews are all positive as well. It should be a great summer if the wind ever lets up here on the plains!!!!!!

RE: HOB ME109.....Plastic Fuse Top Painting
I have a bunch of Parma "Fastcolor" paint that I use on slot cars. I do have a lot of colors so I guess I will use that. I have about 7 colors so I ought to be able to come up with about any color I need. I had forgotten about those paints until now.

RE: aileron design/hinging
Chad it all depends upon the airplane. Usually a torque tube setup uses one servo in its application to control the ailerons with the servo being centered in the wing needs an inset of the torque rod in the aileron and the drilling of a pilot hole for the 90 degree rod which can get tricky in 1/8" stock. Whereas using CA hinges two servos are generally installed one in each wing controlled by using either a Y cord or two separate channels. Installing the CA hinges you will have to slot the aileron and wing side to install them which would probably be the better choice between the two systems from what you describe. Rounding the aileron stock where it meets the wing will allow freer hinging of the control surfaces. Other choices are small hinges which can also be slotted, the Robart system would be too large for the 1/8" stock. Hope this helps tell us more about your airplane project.

I don't know what radio you are using, but once in a while, there are compatibility issues. Why not couple a channel to your elevator, and run the servo from your receiver.

RE: Retracts For HOB's
The ME109 is about finished but I will try to do a build thread on the FW190 and the P-47. The Messerschmitt was a good build. Quality kit with very good fits throughout the process. We are leaving the landing gear of as our field won't accommodate any wheels smaller than 3 or 4 inches. If I hit the lottery I promised the club that I would pave a strip for them!!! Anyway, if anyone has any comments or suggestions on building the FW190 or the P-47 I would appreciate it.

http://home.cablerocket.com/~scaleribstitch/ this is the website for Scale Rib Stitch. He produces stitching in several scale sizes. You cut it to width, stick it on and tape over it. I use Solartex for the tapes, and iron them down. I've used this product on 6 WW1 airplanes, so far. Won't go back to glue with this available.

Retracts For HOB's
Am finishing up a HOB ME109 and it is a great kit. When finished I will move on to an HOB P-47 then a Focke Wulff 190...all by HOB. I bought these kits years ago on ebey and I think I paid 30 or 35 bucks for them. I wish I could find them now for that ptice!!!!!!!!! I would like to put retracts in the P47 and the FW190. I have read some posts concerning this but I can't remember what retracts they used. Can someone recommend a good retract that will fit in these 2 models? I have read some good reviews on the HOB kits. I can't wait to fly these birds. I guess I need their P 51 to balance out the hangar........2 Allied planes and 2 Axis planes. Thanks.

RE: Tip Stall
Thank you everyone for all the imput!!!! [:D] This post to a great extent did exactly what I'd hoped it would accomplish which is to bring forth issues and principles related to stalls. From this discussion hopefully many here will gain more insight into how to not fly their model into an envelope of flight that could result in a stall ending in a crash. I admit its been a while since I sat in ground school so there are some cobwebs in the bell tower. A lot of good information presented much of which I agree with. With that said I think its time for us to sift through what has been presented form a simple list of pilot considerations that will help our fellow fliers prevent future crashes. As many have pointed out a lot depends upon the type and design of the aircraft flown. Since I am the instigator(devils advocate) if you will of this discussion/debate I'll reserve my input towards the end. Please share your thoughts on stall prevention!

HOB ME109.....Plastic Fuse Top Painting
We are getting ready to put color on our House of Balsa ME 109 and need a little advice. First: will Sig Supercote attack the plastic canopy and fuse top? Second: we are doing a sky blue bottom and a grey top with green camo spots. We did it on a big Spitfire and it came out nice. Does the cotton ball technique work on small scale? How are these spots applied? Any precautions I should take? I have some Parma(maybe Pactra)slot car paint that is water based. Is it fuel proof? I am sorry that I didn't do a build thread on this plane. My brother does nice work. Our system, for over 50 years, consisted of me building the aircraft and him flying it(at least the big ones). I have a stack of HOB WWll warbirds and he wanted to do the ME109 himself. I didn't know that he was that good. I have an Enya .09 that we thought we would use on this plane but after flying our Ace Whizard with our Cox .051 R/C we decided to use it on the ME109. It screams to the point that your ears begin to hurt. We fly out in the country so noise is not a problem although the muffler is quiet when we use it. We will be doing the HOB FW190 next. Eventually we will have a hangar full of Allied planes and Axis aircraft. Should be fun. I will try to post a pic of the Messerschmitt when complete.

Tip Stall
After reading a good many posts here about tip stall there appears to be some misunderstanding of what really occurs, or what is thought to occur in such a stall. We all should know that there a number of factors that can be involved to cause the tip stall often called a snap which most often occurs when our models are on approach, or a turn to final. There are also other regimes of flight where the same can occur even at higher speeds called an accelerated stall where drag exceeds lift available. Stalls can and will occur in very high G turns at any airspeed at any aircraft attitude. Since there are many factors in stalls here are some thoughts with a link to provide additional information which should give you more insight into the aerodynamic principles involved. With that said........... If you are making a level turn to final approach as the angle of bank increases so does the "G" loading on the airplane requiring more lift to support flight. A level 45 degree turn has a loading of 1.41 G's, or a level 60 degree turn - 2 G's . This means if your airplane weighs 10 pounds in a 60 degree bank the wing now has to support 20 pounds of effective weight with requires more airspeed in order to support the induced weight. If your airplane gets too slow in the turn a stall will occur and if the upper wing stalls first a snap like action will occur when the lower wing (still flying) goes over the top. The same can happen if your airplane gets too slow on an essentially straight in approach if one wing stalls before the other causing the stall not to be straight ahead. Since we do not have the advantage of being inside the aircraft with a method of knowing if the airplane is in coordinated flight one wing will most often stall first. Here is a link with a lot of good information to review there is a lot of good information that may save you a crash. http://selair.selkirk.bc.ca/Training/Aerodynamics/turns.htm

Notice that the disintegrating Boomerang in the three pictures (post #6) has a repainted fuselage and red painted nose. This particular plane had prior crash damage that required a rebuilding of the fuselage/nose. It may be possible that other structural damage was present but went unnoticed and led to the catastrophic failure seen in the photos.

FIRST LANIER R/C AIRCRAFT
About 40 years ago, my Father won this plane at an Omahawks club fun fly. I believe it is their first model. It is a pattern ship along the lines of a "Kwik Fly." Does anyone have an idea of what it's worth? It is in perfect shape. Never had a motor mounted on it. I think I will put it up on ebay. I need the money for a new, programmable radio. Probably a Futuba.
