RE: Making Some Progress... I'm slow...
Still poking and whittling away at this thing. I fabricated the landing gear struts out of wire, brass tube and brass sheet as shown on the plans... Painted a little of the interior, covered a little around the windows...covered and mounted the wing struts....... Im starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. If only my Solartex would show up so I could cover the fuselage.. I had to order outside the US and its taking FOREVER..... Im starting to have concern about the Engine.... Do you all think that the OS .60 MAX FP will be enough to lug this thing around? ... Its gaining weight.... Starting to worry me a little... Oh well.. Guess we will see... Here are a few of the latest pictures...

Will these metal head/ tail kits work on my axe 400
Ater some internet searching, I found some posts where it seems like some people have been replacing the stock head and tail assemblies on their AXE 400 with these complete metal head and tail kits that are made for the TREX 450. I had a mishap and busted the stock head block on my AXE 400, so I am thinking that rather than pay 10.00 + shipping for a stock head block from Tower that I would rather buy one of these complete metal head and tail kits.... Before I do, I just wanted to make certain that these are just a straight drop in replacement and will work with my AXE 400 with no other modifications..... Could someone please answer this question for me. I think from what I have read that they are.. I will just need to use the stock swashplate assembly.... Correct? Here are a few that I am looking at.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/RC-Align-Helicopter-Trex-450-Metal-Upgrade-Head-Tail-/280567560767?pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item4153213a3f http://www.hobbypartz.com/exicncmerohe.html

RE: Making Some Progress... I'm slow...
Still Moving Slow, but nonetheless making some progress. I've managed to cover the Horizontal Stab and the Tail Fin. All Control Surfaces are now hinged, and in place with CA type Hinges, rather than being taped in place.. :). Control Horns are installed and pushrods are connected. I painted the cowl and the landing gear using the Testors Gloss Yellow in the Spray Can. #1214. The "N" number Decals that came with the Kit just were not going to stay in place. I ended up tracing the outline of the numbers with a fine point Sharpie marker and then using a Sharpie Magnum Permanent Marker colored in or painted the numbers directly on the covering. Its not perfect, but they wont fly off the first time it flies... Time to order another roll of Solartex so I can cover the fuselage....

RE: Making Some Progress... I'm slow...
ORIGINAL: Gray Beard The color match for the solartex Cub Yellow is Testors All purpose gloss yellow #1214. My friend used a matt clear to make sure it was fuel proof. LustreKote was used. He used three very light coats. If it is sprayed on too heavy it will wrinkle the Testors paint.
Thank you so very much for that information... I need to order another roll of Solartex to finish the Fuselage, but I have continued to make a little progress every night.. I will post up some more photos after I get the fuselage covered. Thanks again Gray Beard. Greatly Appreciated.

RE: Making Some Progress... I'm slow...
ORIGINAL: exsailor62 Steve, What are you using to cover the Cub?  I have noticed that ''Cub Yellow'' comes in many shades as I try to match up covering with paint put on my cowl and landing gear on the GP Cub J-3 I am building.  I am about the same stage you are, except that I don't have any covering done as I am trying to decide on fabric or film for covering and hence the matching colors issue.  ;-) I am powering my Cub with an O.S. .91, 4 stroke that I bought sometime in the 1990's and never completed the Mustang I was going to put it in.  Sounds like we exhibit some of the same symptoms of buildus interruptus when it comes to plane projects.  ;-)
I am using the Solartex Fabric Covering. I dont have that much experience with covering, but I can tell you that of all the Shrink type coverings that I have played around with that this Solartex Covering is by far the easiest I have ever worked with. It seems to have a lot of elasticity, even before adding heat. Maybe I'm crazy, but it just seems much easier to stretch around curved surfaces and pull out the wrinkles. The glue backing seems superb, and any wrinkles that I did encounter practically vanished with a few hits from the iron, or the heat gun. This covering makes me look like I halfway know what I am doing. If I had been using Monokote, (which I love the looks of) I more than likely would have wasted an entire roll trying to get it right.....As far as color matching goes, I think I read on here that others were having a difficult time trying to match the Solartex Cub Yellow. Maybe someone else can chime in and give us some leads towards some close matching paint. I definitely suffer from "buildus interruptus".. LOL..... Like I mentioned before, I do well with building the Airframe portion.... I just struggle with all of the fine tuning, time consuming finish work. And Thank You Foodstick..... I appreciate that, but natural, I am not. I do nothing extra. I think I am okay with reading, comprehending, and following directions. I can get it done, and make it airworthy. Its just not going to win any ribbons for best looking plane.. thats for sure.. .LOL.... Depending on how this one actually turns out, Maybe, just Maybe, I will try my hand at another Kit one day.

RE: Making Some Progress... I'm slow...
Thanks Dave... I have left it out in the Breakfast Nook of the Kitchen, so that helps me to keep at it a little every night... I dont really have a place to build and this thing has started to become quite cumbersome.. I figure as long as it sits out in the way, I will stay that much more motivated to finish it!!.. Now that I dug it back out, seeing the latest progress has really been somewhat rewarding. Those Engine Forms were actually purchased separately. The Great Planes Kit came with some Forms, but I messed them up when trying to cut them out. I couldnt see the scribe lines on the mold and trying to peice them together was just not going to happen, so I bought some new ones from SIG MFG. The forms that are on the cowl now, are actually what comes with the SIG 1/5 scale Piper Cub Kit...

Making Some Progress... I'm slow...
Well, now that the cold weather has moved back in, I decided to dig the Great Planes Piper Cub back out of my attic and try to actually finish this thing. This is only my second attempt at building a Kit. The first was a Top Flite P-40 which has been hanging from my garage ceiling for the last 2 years.. No Engine, No Electronics, etc... I doubt very seriously that it will ever get finished and attempt to fly. Anyhow, I dont want the same to happen with the Piper Cub, so I am without doubt going to finish this thing and make it fly... I have the Engine, In Cowl Exhaust, Fuel Tank, Fuel Lines, Installed... I finished covering the Wing and the Control Surfaces Yesterday. Now I need to finish covering the Fuselage, Install the Windows, Paint the engine Cowling, Install the Radio Gear, Mount the Main Tires, and Hook up all of the Control Surfaces, etc... It seems never ending.. I once heard someone on here say they were 90% done with 90% of the work left... I now know exactly what that means!!!!!! I do good until I get to that point and then its hard for me to finish. I would rather just go buy an ARF... Please dont bash me, I do enjoy the kit building, but I dont really think its my cup of tea... I enjoy seeing what you other more experienced kit builders can accomplish. I find myself driven to try and do the same, but have come to the harsh reality... I just dont have those skills.. Just to be sure that I do finish and fly this plane, I am going to post this with a current picture, and continue to update periodically with my progress, However slow it might be up until the time that this thing takes to the skies....

RE: How about some advice....
Thanks for help again and for the Links... I was thinking Maybe that Motor was a little big, and it was out of stock and impossible to find in stock anywhere else, so I bought the Turnigy Aerodrive SK 4250-650 Motor. It seems others have had really good success with this engine in these Warbirds.

Awesome Buzz... Thanks again... I have been doing alot of reading. I went over to RC Group and there seems to be quite a bit more discussion on these planes over there.... I just put my first order list together.. Below is what I had.... Im not planning on pulling the trigger on this stuff until the end of the week so that I can continue to research, compare prices, change things as I get opinions and advice from more experienced EP Warbird Owners... One thing is for certain.. that OS 120 4 stroke, Electronics, and Robart Air Tank ,Lines and Fittings that I needed to finish up my Top Flite Warhawk is taking a back seat again.... RE: How about some advice....
Thanks again Buzz.... I understand about the Difference between the RTF, ARF, KIT... as far as whats required.... I was just wondering if the RTF electronic parts such as the ESC, Servos, were of good quality and reliable, or if it would be better option to just buy the kit and install higher grade, more reliable electronics and save myself some headache. I appreciate all of the links and all of the information you have shared. It has helped a great deal. I will continue to research, so that I get a better understanding of this EP Foam powered flight stuff.... One thing I know for certain is that I will have a few of these Airframes up and flying before the end of Summer.

RE: How about some advice....
So you are saying Use my Radio... and get the KIT.. Not the ARF, and buy my own RX ,ESC, Battery, and Servos....I am thinking that is the best way to go too.... The Problem I have is. I dont know what ESC I am supposed to buy, or what makes one better than another, whether or not it needs to be programmed, etc etc etc.... Also... What would be the best Battery for this size electric plane, with the Engine? What exactly does the ESC do? Does it just regulate the amount of power that is supplied to the motor, and shut off the power to keep from discharging the Battery too low? Whats the advantage of a higher AMP ESC? I believe i read that this plane requires at least a 40 amp ESC... Would buying a 60AMP ESC allow me to run a larger MAH Battery at a Higher "C" rating for a longer period without.... "Making the magic smoke" as you guys call it? I guess I just need to do alot more research and reading until I start to understand how they all relate and work together...

RE: How about some advice....
Thanks Buzz.... I actually just posted this in another Forum, but maybe you could answer a few of the questions I have in this post as well.. It does seem like a steep learning curve, and I have never been quick to understand Electronics.. I dont want to see what you guys refer to as the magic smoke... Okay... I have made up my mind and I am definitely going to venture into the World of Electric RC Warbirds by purchasing one ( maybe two.... maybe three ) of the "Airfield" 1400 MM Warbirds. I dont know anything about Electric Powered so I am feeling overwhelmed when trying to decide what version to buy... RTF, ARF, or KIT with no electronics. I would really like to use my Futaba FASST 2.4 Radio that I already have for my Helimaxe Axe 400, so I dont really need the RTF Plane with another Transmitter... If I buy the ARF, I would just need to buy a Reciever for my Futaba 6EX and Battery... Correct? I guess I am wondering if the rest of the Electronics that come with this Aircraft are suitable? Would I be better of buying the KIT version and upgrading the ESC, and Servos as well? What exactly does the ESC do? What makes one better than another? Is the higher AMP better? What size Batteries are the rest of you all using for these planes and getting good flight times and Power output? Would a 2250MAH at 30c be a good choice for this plane.. I would like to get at least 10 minutes of flightime out of a Battery Pack... Last, A Good Balance Charger for at least a 4S Lipo.... All I know is that I would like to charge more than one at time, Would like to Charge from my Vehicle Battery, and dont want it to take over an hour to Fully Charge... Is this even possible...or am I asking way too much... LOL I guess what I am asking for from others who have these planes, is to help get me set up right the first time.. I dont want to buy stuff, too realize afterwards that its just the minimum in order to be able to fly, and I need to upgrade everything... I just want to do it right the first time, so that when I add additional planes, I will either already have, or know exactly what I need.. Sorry to be so long winded.. Any help related to these specfic Electric Warbirds would be greatly appreciated.. . Hide Signatures

RE: 2 Lipos packs similar but what really counts:
Sorry, I am a complete Newbie as well....Am I understanding this correctly by assuming that... the Higher the "C" rating the more power you will get out of your battery, but the faster the discharge rate, and shorter the flight times? So.. .If I want more power... a 30C or 35C battery would provide more than a 20C battery but at 1250 MAH the 30C would not provide as long of flight time as the 20C would...correct?.. Ugh... Thats a tongue twister...

Thank you for the heads up and for the link. I guess my next step is start reading and learning more about electric modeling. I have no idea about batteries, chargers, motors, ESC, etc. etc. etc. I am wondering for the larger electric planes, if it might be better to purchase them in Kit Form, and buy my own motor, ESC, and Battery setup? RE: How about some advice....
Thanks... I do like the Parkzone planes. However the more I look at the planes in the links above the more I am liking those. I finally discovered that they are made by Airfield RC and are sold by Nitroplanes. They just look to be stronger, and much larger for the same price... even less actually... Nitroplanes is selling the complete RTF P51 for 209.00..Thats with Etracts and Option to add Flaps.... I think I am going to give one of these planes a try, now its just which one.. The P-40, the P-51, or the Corsair....??? Too many choices....

Need a Gyro for my AXE 400...
Okay... I can not take it anymore... I have read, researched, read some more, and no matter what I try and do, the Gyro on my AXE 400 just WILL NOT WORK!.... I go to make a left hand turn.. barely touch the tail and it will spin 3-4 full pirouettes. It has caused me to lose control and crash for the last time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need some advice on a good replacement Gyro that wont break the bank and will work with the stock tail servo.... I dont need anything fancy.. .just something that will work! Is there anything out there that is reliable and will work for around $50.00 or less? Anyone have a used gyro that they might want to part with?

How about some advice....
Hey everyone. I have been mostly out of the R/C hobby for several years now, but I am slowly starting to creep my way back in. I mostly flew .40 .60 nitro power ARF warbirds back about 10 years ago, as well as nitro powered .30 size Helicopters. Why I sold out... I do not know.. I guess I got tired of hearing my wife complain abou the money I was spending, so one day I got pissed and sold everything just to shut her up..... I have regretted it ever since.... Last year, Now that I am DIVORCED....LOL...I bought my first Electric Helicopter.. a Helimaxe Axe 400. I am still flying it, and have a good time with it. I also built a .60 size Top FLite P40 Warhawk, but with money and time restraints, I still need the motor, electrics, retracts....etc. to finish it up. I also have a .60 size CUB that I built from a Kit that is ready for final sanding and covering, but I just havent got around to that either. Heres my situation... I keep finding myself looking at these EP RTF foam planes, like the Parkzone. 10 years ago, I would have written these type of planes off as just junk, but it seems that everyone who owns one of these planes has a really good time flying them. What can you all tell me about them? I keep thinking that for the price, ease of transport, ease of finding a flying sight.. etc. etc. etc... That this might be the quickest, most affordable, and least time consuming way for me to get back into the Hobby. I can buy a complete ready to fly plane for what I would have to spend on a OS 120 Engine for my Top Flight Warhawk, and with the BNF option, adding additional Aircraft to the fleet for under $200.00 sounds both wonderful and affordable... Just last night, I went to Tower Hobbies website and added everything I would nedd to get a .60 size ARF warbird in the air to my Basket and by the time I finished I was up around $1200.00.... I just kept thinking... thats like 6 different Parkzone Warbirds I could own... So... with all that spill above... What do you guys think... Would I be disappointed with the new EP Foam planes like the Parkzone? What other companies compare to both quality and price? Does anyone have any experience with this plane? I found it on EBAY..... a RTF 55" Warhawk with electric Retracts.. .I dont know who the manufacturer is, but I like the size.... http://cgi.ebay.com/55-RC-Airplane-P-40-WARHAWK-2-4GHz-5CH-w-E-TRACTS-RTF_W0QQitemZ150574551360QQcategoryZ34053QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp5197.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D7709399056014738096 What to do? Great Planes .60 Cub.. Clipped?
Hi all.... I have started building the Great Planes .60 Piper Cub that I picked up from a co-worker... I have decided that I am going to finish/cover it as a Navy NE-1. I am a little undecisive on a few things though, and wanted some other opinions. #1. Should I build the standard 90 inch Wing, or cut it back and build the Clipped Wing? Which would you build and why? #2. Would you keep it Cub Yellow with the Red stripe and Navy Markings or go with the Blue and Grey markings for the NE-1? I am thinking the blue and grey would be hard to see, although I like those Markings Better. #3 Where could I find, or what could I use for the Military Trim and Lettering... ie.... The Star and NAVY lettering? Any ideas, suggestions, or Help?

The Wing... All 90" of it.... I couldnt believe that when I saw it on the box....I have a pickup truck, but it only has a 6' bed...I have no idea how I will transport this thing... Or better yet... Where in the world will I build it? I have a Building Board that I used to build my Top Flite P-40 and that was hardly big enough for a 60" wing....... Looks like my daughter will be sleeping on the couch this winter when she comes to visit, the Balsa Dust thats she is going to find in her bedroom might be a problem.... :)

The best R/C deal Ive ever gotten!!!!!
I am still in shock.... overly excited...and thrilled about falling face first into the best R/C deal I've ever gotten.... Heres the story...... I come into work on Monday morning... just sitting in my cubicle minding my own business when I overhear a co-worker talking about his yard sale this coming weekend and everything he will be selling. I hear... Radio Controlled Airplane.... hmmmmmmm ... Now I have to get up and go ask him about this so called radio controlled airplane..... I inquire, and he replies with... I need a fuelproof clearcoat... Help...
I am finishing a Top Flite P-40 Kit.... covered with ultracote, then sanded and painted with Model Master Enamel paint... The problem now is I cant find a fuelproof clearcoat.. I dont have any spray equipment so I was hoping for something in a can that would be fuelproof and compatable with the Model Master Enamel... Can someone help me out.. What will work?

RE: Some updated P-40 Pictures..
Hmm I hope this doesnt turn into a double post...... Anyhow.. as promised I managed to get the Tigers Teeth painted on the Cowl this weekend... I used the supplied Top Flite Decal as a template and then cut and hand painted on the design a layer at at time.. Looks okay I guess.. Much better than the supplied Decal anyhow.... I still need to clearcoat... My LHS does not carry Lusterkote... .Is there a type of clearcoat that I can buy from Wal-Mart that will work with the Model Master Paint and be fuelproof? Anyone? Heres a few of the latest pictures...

RE: Some updated P-40 Pictures..
Thanks Chad...I will try the Lusterkote on some scrap and then follow your advice for using it.. Your P40 looks awesome!!!! What a beautiful aircraft in flight... I was actually in the Army and Stationed at Wheeler Army Airfield when they filmed the last Pearl Harbor Movie... I spent every day on the flightline watching the P-40s chase down the Zeros as they made thier strafing runs on the Airfield.. .It was unbelievable to watch in person.... Thats what made me want to build the P40..

RE: Some updated P-40 Pictures..
Thanks Rebsix... This is actually my first kit.... I started it last year around this time.. had it framed up and sheeted really quick, and then I got frustrated and nearly gave up on it when I started trying to cover it. It looks nice in the pictures or from arms distance, but if you get up close you can definitely see my many rookie flaws. At this point I just want to finish it and hope that it will fly. I plan on masking off the cowl and finishing the teeth this weekend... Could anyone tell me what type of clearcoat will work with Model Master Paint and is fuelproof?
