Dive-in at the Lido 4th October and 22nd November 2009
Might seem early to be thinking about winter Dive-in's, what with all the balmy weather we've been enjoying over the past week or so, but it'll soon swing around and as the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm! So here we have the two remaining dates for 2009. First run is on Sunday 4th October, and the second on Sunday 22nd November. The time slot is 10:00am until 4:00pm, although it's generally best to turn up early as some people do leave early. As before, entry is free, thanks to the generosity of Fusion for allowing us the use of their splendid facilities at no charge. I'd advise bringing your own refreshment and food, as no cafe facilities are open during the winter months. However there is a kettle for hot water, and power sockets are on hand for those wishing to recharge their batteries. I'd like to thank Ramesh for stepping forward and volunteering to organise the November Dive-in, so please make the effort to come along and take part during the day. I will send out a further reminder nearer the day. In the meantime if those of you reading this can spread the word amongst local clubs, friends, model shops etc. that would be much appreciated. Cheers, Andy Brockwell Lido, Brockwell Park, Dulwich Road, London SE24 0PA Map- http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=SE24+0PA&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1

Dive-in at the Lido Sunday 7th December 2008
Be there, or be square. 3rd Dive-in, and the last of 2008. I'm ending this an hour earlier, as it'll start getting dark by 3pm. That's still 5 hours of uninterrupted sailing. Andy

Dive-in at the Lido Sunday 2nd November 2008
Fun and frolics at the second Dive-in at Brockwell Lido. Please be advised, refreshments are NOT available on site, so it's a good idea to bring along your own food and drink. They do have a kettle we can use, so hot water is available for tea, coffee etc. Personally, I bring along a flask. Just be there. RE: UK Pool Runs 7th July and 9th September 2007
The Trent Park pool run (9th September) has now been cancelled. This is due to a clash with another show running the same weekend (Barleylands), which would severely cut the number of people turning up. This would leave me with a large bill to settle out of my own pocket,as i only have a half dozen names in the hat. There will be a future event, most likely next year. On the plus side, this gives more time to get things worked out, magazine advertising etc. Sorry folks, but some things are beyond my control. Andy

BTW, please let me know who is attending with regards to the Tadley day. Unfortunately this event needs numbers in advance, you can't just turn up on the day. Andy

RE: New Sub HULL and Scratch Building!
If you're looking at building an Akula at the size you mention, then you won't be looking at 20cm pipe, much too large. A 1:1 Akula is about 108 Metres in length by 13.5 metres beam. At the size you're looking at, 11cm waste pipe will do just right. There are lots of good threads over at subcommittee.com and subpirates.com if you want to learn more about building your own hull. RE: New Sub HULL and Scratch Building!
Plumbers and builders merchants sell PVC pipe in various diameters. Foam can be a little trickier to source, the afore mentioned places sometimes stock foam. Be warned that polyurethane foam will stick to the resin, and you can't melt it out. Andy

RE: New Sub HULL and Scratch Building!
Erm, polyurethane foam (the yellow stuff) will NOT melt when you apply resins to it. Polystyrene foam (usually blue, white or pink in colour) will melt if you use conventional polyester resin. Epoxy resin won't react with either of these foams. For a small sub I'd recommend at least two... Handbook' by R.H Warring (try Amazon). BTW I'd recommend building a sub around a length

RE: ballast tanks
Cheap ballast tank? Use a plastic coca-cola or some other kind of fizzy drink bottle. Mount a pipe in the cap, and you're done. A 500ml bottle will give you lots of freeboard. Andy

RE: Sub hull
A large new hull is difficult to find at the price you quote. There are lots of companies selling hulls in the UK, but most of the larger hulls will be £200 or more. However, consider looking for a secondhand hull. Have a look in the small ads in model magazines, check with local clubs, ebay etc. There are always people selling either semi started, new in box, or finished models, often well below what they cost new. Don't expect to pick up a mint hull, or a OTW Type VII for a 100 quid, but you could get an old Darnell model which can be built into very presentable model provided you have decent modelmaking skills.
