RE: SURE START hop ups ??
ORIGINAL: Honker1 Two winters ago I filled my house with smoke from testing my surestart in the basement atfer each mod. Unfortunately I didn't keep records except the final one. I was getting about 20,000 rpm on a 5x3, put it on my Sureshark and it screamed! Here is what I did: - drilled out the venturi with a 3/16'' drill, smoothed the opening with an exacto - lightened the piston by using a brass tube that fit in my 1/2'' drill and held the piston, used an #11 exacto blade to skim metal out of the inside of the piston, just don't get it to thin (the piston wall) - used a nelson head, in my opinion the easiest most reliable head for really consistent performance. There may be better but these work very well. (I don't know what is better) - deburred the crank with tooth paste, sounds crazy but it works really well - mine already had SPI ( sub port induction) so I did not have to shorten the piston. When I was done this engine screamed like a strong TD .049 on 25% nitro with 20% castor. It still screams, a $6.95 engine runs as strong as a real Killer Bee (yes my wife bought 2 of them from the Ace RC catalog for me for Christmas some years ago). In short, do the things I did on your Sure Start and you should get really good results or I will eat my hat! Good Luck and ask if you have any questions, Pat
Guys, could you post some pics of how you did your mods pleazse, having pics would make it alot easier to understand.
ORIGINAL: coriolan Nelson heads and plugs would be wasted on a Surestart, by them time you replace all that need to be replaced to make it breath better you'd probably spent more than what a used ''Black Widow'' would cost! The ''Surestart'' serie were just a cheap version of what came in those plastic RTF.
Well 2 people just debunked your theory

SURE START hop ups ??
I have a few never run surestarts that I bought from Cox just before they shut down. I want to get the most rpms out of these. How about Nelson heads and plugs? What hop up parts from Cox International would you recommend? Different clylinders and pistons? What would your recipe be for a powerful surestart?

Most ridiculous poll I've seen. If you don't like to fly foamies, there is something wrong with you. One of the best things to happen to rc, thats why there are so many people doing it.

RE: You MUST Have a Buddy With You When You Play
The only scenario where a spotter should ever be mandatory is if your field is adjacent to full scale operation. (Used to belong to this club) Other than that mandatory spotters are a stupid idea (except for pilot training). I don't want anyone breathing down my neck while I'm trying to have fun.

RE: Fuel Consumption .061 Wasp Engine
ORIGINAL: highamperage I am working on a tiny UAV for fun, and am looking for long flight times. (2-4 hours) Electric is my other obvious option, but my initial thoughts were these little engines might be able to keep the plane aloft longer. However... Now I am not sure if that is the case, if it burns 10oz per hour, to get 2-4 hours would basically turn this into a flying gas tank haha. The plane will not require much power, a .061 engine would probably accelerate it vertically (Assuming it's not a flying gas can) so I could throttle it way back for a ''cruise.'' I have been reading and may check into the PAW diesel engines. Could be interesting?
Go electric. No dead sticks

RE: Thrust Figures For Norvel .049 and .061
ORIGINAL: MikeSell I have several of these engines and use them to fly different types of planes. The thrust they produce is totally dependent upon the prop installed. Prop diameter and pitch as well as efficency effect thrust greatly. With the right pitch and diameter these engines will indeed turn 25,000 RPM but thrust will be down because their torque peak is at about 17-18,000. That prop is not exerting the resistance necessary to load the engine. It will make the engine spin fast and possibly make a small plane fly fast but will not produce the most thrust. A prop that will not allow the engine attain close to 17,000 rpm is lugging the engine an is not producing maximum thrust. Trimming the diameter of the blade just enough to allow the engine to hit its torque peak should increase thrust. The airfoil and rigidity of the prop blades are the other major factors. A thin airfoil has less wind resistance than a thick one but usually a thick airfoil has more lift. The efficency (resistance vs lift) controls if the increase iin RPM will yield more lift which translates to thrust. The correct diameter/pitch/efficency combination may or may not produce the most thrust depending if the blade flexes out of spec under load. Flexable props are wonderful on planes with no landing gear or in crashes. In demanding applications more rigid ones are always preferred. It would take some prop testing to find what is the maximum thrust of these engines with the available props. Your question as stated is much like ''With 120v power supply how hot will my hot plate get?'' I get enough thrust from my .061 norvel to fly a 52'' span high drag airframe at a 45 degree climb indefinately. With the same engine but a different prop of different manufacture, but the same diameter and pitch, the plane hasn't enough thrust to maintain level flight.
So what is all the hype about getting these engines up to 30K for pylon racing? If you are 12k past the torque curve, what is the benefit ?

I just threw my TT GP .07 on the bench with no muffler, 5.5x4 MA, 25% and a short non rc plug. Got 18,400 on it. That seems to be pretty good from what I've read about these engines. The fuel nipple kind of points forward. Can it be rotated to point back? (I have not taken the time to tear it apart yet to find out)
