RE: Exhaust header
DIY exhaust header with them 'looking good' and on the airplane?
First , this is the BOAT section . not airplanes . and also , there is a picture of his DIY header at the beginning of the thread . Not the presttiest , but it IS cheap and when you can't find one and have to scratch build one ... thats the info he gives . Mysefl , not really sure I would want all that extra weight of copper or brass hanging all over , whereas for a boat , its not that critical to have that little bit of extra weight ( unless racing of course )

RE: anyone remeber the Puddle Jumper?
They're not as uncommon as you might think . I picked one up about 7 months ago from a fellow from Georgia on EBAY for a mere $15.00 plu $10.00 to ship . ( although the motor was seized , it was still worth it ) I even got one of those COX air cars along with the COX dune buggy too [8D] ( not too great , both are tethered vehicles )
tough to control on the hard pack that forms after a week of no new snow
Make yourself a set of "runners" for the bottom . ( hint - think of figure skate runners when making them - without the front grips . and NOT too tall either - no more than 1/4 inch tall)

Just curious why you don't simply fibreglass the mount(s) to the hull and be done with it ? Forget the screws , forget the iron ...

Anybody besides me running on snow/ice ?
Just curious about if there is anyone else running on Old Man Winters white stuff or his frozen drink ? I am , and am waiting to see if anybody else is , before I start posting some vids which will destroy any current "speed" records set . ( yes , there is a Garmin Etrex mounted on her at start and shows all the way till she comes back in ) Anybody ???? ( give ya a hint , on frozen snow or ice , ariboats run a LOT faster ! ! ![:D] ) The boat is my WHIZZER with a new engine on her ... Spent a few pennines on the enw engine , but was WELL worth it . RE: which radio???????
Kinda hoping that AM was not being knocked down as I assume ... Think of this , if you will . Take a BOSE car stereo , and then take a ROADMASTER stereo ... put them both on the SAME channel ( either AM or FM ) and listen to the difference . The same applies here . Now , there are LOTS of "cheapo" priced TX and RX that , although unknown to a LOT of consumers , are made by MAJOR manufacturers . For example . A LOT of folks think that the TQ3 radio gear is cheap . Well , guess again . Same maker of radio gear that some might think to be top shelf . Now ,as you found out when you compared AM to FM on a CHEAP made radio verses one of quality , there is a MAJOR difference . Same applies to RC Tx and RX's . And FTR - a name brand does NOT always mean its a qualtiy piece either . Just like a TX with tons of bells and whistles does NOT make it a better radio . Or one that produces a "stronger" signal . ( especially since FCC limits the transmission output to 750 ma of power , no matter what , unless your a Ham operator with license , and even then , you are STILL restricted on certain freq's ) And IMO - I will choose a TQ3 over a LOT of the more well known radio gear out there for airboats . Why ? easy access to related parts - crystals , RX's ...and such . a LOT cheaper to replace than most , and can be had for on places like EBAY for around $25.00 for the pair - RX and TX combo . AND ... if you accidently dunk it , dip it , or drown it , into the deep blue , no major loss . And for the MOST security , invest in a FAIL SAFE ... there is NO radio that will substitute the usage of a fail safe ! Why ? Because ALL of the freq's , in ALL modes are subject to interference . ( don't believe me , read your little booklet that comes with the TX/RX ... it tells you right there ... )

RE: my boat being built
I'd say go with a .25 instead. A .40 IMO is just too much, it's not because of the speed, but because the boat will flip often and won't turn well at all. It's just too short of a hull.
And those are just the icing on the cake ! It will be TOO heavy and TOP heavy as well . The ass end will sit WAY down in the water and have a hard time planing , it will porpoise , and the torque will cause more torque roll then its worth , and flip the boat and NOT even when your trying to turn . Do as suggested above - but IMO - I would go with a good .19 , they have plenty of "umphh" for that size hull and a lot of folks ignore the .19's thinking they just don't have it . To be honest with ya , a .19 to a .25 is kinda like a .46 compared to a .40 ( being the .19 the better choice )

RE: im so confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Theres an old saying my dad used to tell me and so when I repeat it , please excuse me if its one of those obvious questions .. About the foam hull , you ARE gonna epoxy over it , correct ? ( nitro fuel WILL eat/melt it up . ) I ask this , only because you were gonna go EP ( electric power ) and this would not have been needed to do if you were powering your vessel that way ( EP ) Go to EBAY and do a search for TQ3 ... there will come up a BUNCH of radio control TX and Rx's ... there are a LOT of times these can be had for around $20.00 for the pair ( no , no servos , just the new TX and RX ) 3 channel AM 27 Mhz - BUT , they ARE good items ... I used them a LOT .

RE: dumas airboat problems
Paint = thats an easy one - any shaker can that is fuel proof ( usually any of the ones that you will find at an auto parts store - just be sure to buff , or remove the old paint first ) And about the engine , I would say get a new carb , but , at the prices of carbs I might even just suggest getting a different engine off EBAY . ( or a new one from like TOWER HOBBIES )

RE: Making a Blizzard, with a Vortex
Just my view on seamless hulls . I , myself , have taken a couple of hulls , and made them seamless and whenever there is ANY kind of whalop on the front , they do not take it very well . [&o] Not like before I cut and sanded off the over-lap that was originally there . ( I am not saying you did any alterations like that , just making a statement about what I , myself , have experienced with seamless hulls ) I understand your anger and I am not saying that you don't have a right to be upset at the other things , but when a fella stops and thinks about a seamless hull , how would one go about getting the seam , to hold REALLY well ( seeing as to how you have one flat , meeting another flat and you want to join them and give them strength ) ? I , tried fibreglass tape with resin - no luck . Silicone , shoo-goo , CA with micro's , 2 part foam and filled the front and rear for added strength , and even went to an extreme and lopped on some JB weld , thinking - what the heck , couldn't hurt ( LOL ) . Anyway ... IMO - joining a hull that is seamless is not an easy task ( to join it is , BUT , to give it strength like a seamless hull , well , I have yet to find a solution myself . ) I feel for ya about the hull , but sometimes a fella has to kick back , grab a cup of coffee , relax and calm down and thnk ... I could've had a V8 instead ... LOL Now , as bad as it seems , just think if it was one of the ABS hulls ( like a lot of us have ) Accidents happen , just be glad its repairable . [8D] Get 'er fixed and get having some more fun . [;)] ( and be careful )

RE: Foam hull / boat
cellotex
yep , we have it over here , as a matter of fact , there is a plant that MAKES the stuff over in the Quad Cities and this can be found at ALL Menards . I made a posting about this over a year ago . Cellotex also comes with a paper backing and front that CAN be removed and also can be found in sheets without any covering . ( harder to find , but do some searching ) Very lightweight and STRONG !

RE: Making a Blizzard, with a Vortex
Do NOT be surprised at how much abuse they can take .... And like I said ... have fun .... Thats what its all about . Look at one of my vids from a while ago . Talk about some flips and crashes ? LOL [:)] http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ud254ZZo7rY I show both regular speed and slooooooowwwww mo , so watch and enjoy . And FTR - this boat is complete scratch built and made from door skin . The rudders have NO top mounts and are ONLY mounted at the bottom , so , as you can see , they ARE tough . ( actually , they are copied from a tail wing from one of my RC planes .[8D] ) One more thing .... if you want to get them a boat that is REALLY GREAT on water , get them an AQUACRAFT ( no longer made , BUT , can be bought new on EBAY at times ) heres a short vid of one of mine that goes pretty decent , and handles like a dream . Almost impossible to flip . http://youtube.com/watch?v=GEzNTYonCBM And here is one of my BIGGEST disappoinments [&o] Running on ice , needless to say http://youtube.com/watch?v=NjJY5T3lz4M

RE: New plastic gasser
I see ONE thing that I would consider ... Do I see correctly , are you using metal to metal on the connecting rods to the horns ? ( metal horns ? ) This might cause glitching . Otherwise , I am just a b*tching because of how nice you made that there !

RE: Making a Blizzard, with a Vortex
Owning a few of those "style" hulls , I know , your not gonna like what I am gonna say , but here goes ; First , the rudder should be longer ( taller , if you choose to address it that way ) next , remove the fuel cell cover to allow for the higher/longer rudder . And as was said above , two rudders , with about an inch toss , will do you MORE than enough . if you ever flew a RC plane , think of how small the flaps are , and how much control , those little things have . Now , I know that this like comparing MacIntosh to granny Greens , but , all in all , they are both apples , same as here . The single rudder , will work , just not as efficient as twins would . but , ya know the old saying ... "As long as you have FUN , thats ALL that matters ! " Get some vids , if possible . ( EVERYONE loves vids - [:D] )

RE: Pool Noodle Alternative
This is why some people leave the forums, or just wont post any ideas.
Nice alternative ! Also gives a person more options on placement for floatation What would be NICE ... is someone could find another lightweight material that is bouyant AND will last . Even though pool noodles are cheap , they DO need to be replaced ( sunlight dries them out and then they tend to take on water after aging ) and can SOMETIMES be a royal pain in the butt to replace because of location/placement . Kudos for going out of the box and finding something different .

RE: Zenoah G45
Well , considering that this is an airplane engine ... hopefully , you DO know that there are NOT a lot of RPMs that come out from this engine and seeing as to how when running RC boats , the RPMs have a lot to do with the total over-all speed , I would suggest just getting a marine Zen ( or SIKK - CY ) There are other negatives as well - air cooled WITHOUT any cooling , weight . less pony power .... Just to name a few . BUT , can you use it ? Sure , same as you can with just about ANY weedie style engine . Just modifications are in order for it to work in a RC boat . Unless you have on setting on your self with no use for it , I would suggest getting a marine engine and going from there . Less headaches and less mods needing to be done . Leave that bad boy for some project like an RC airboat , or plane .

RE: Airboat, bottom finish
That miniscule' amount of speed your "possibly" gonna get by doing the sanding is NOT worth it ! Save the hassle and toss on a nice thing coat of resin ( either kind ) and when done , leave it be and have fun . Folks , we are NOT here racing some TOP dollar speed boats where 1/50 of a mph is gonna matter . [8|] Putting on a smooth bottom will allow you MORE options on what you run on . Do ANY kind of sanding and try running on grass ( make it wet grass and now it becomes even harder ) If you want to run and have fun .. like I said , toss on a layer of resin and have at it . End of story , plain and simple . [;)]

RE: ice any tips
Tip #1 ) add LOTS of extra room for turning . Whatever you THOUGHT was a wide turn before , just got to be a itty bitty turn when running on ice . #2 ) the faster you go , the harder it gets to turn. #3 ) you WILL get to a point where you are going TOO fast , where you can NOT even turn , no matter what #4) last of the tips - Have FUN ! ! ! RE: Big swamp buggy,.... scratch build?
having it yaw in the turns
You betcha .... waching one slide into a turn and trying to predict where and how much makes it all that much more fun to run . But , if you want VERY tight and precise turns , you could always simply remove the air rudder(s) and replace them with a water rudder . Believe me , a water rudder makes a VERY tight , precise turn on ANY airboat , verses an air rudder(s) . But , for more of an original look and for fun , I prefer air rudders . BUT , if I am going for some sort of speed producing hull ( meaning maybe break the record - LOL ) I would definately go with a water rudder .

RE: modifiying servos
Sail servos CAN move over 360 degree's and or less . depending on which you buy . here is an example of a Hitec 180 degree movement with 114 ounces of torque . http://servocity.com/html/hs-75bb_retract.html heres one that will rotate 3 and one half times ... http://servocity.com/html/hs-785hb_3_5_rotations.html And the next bad boy has 343 ounce of torque and does a 140 degree swing . http://servocity.com/html/hs-815bb_mega_sail_arm.html Hope this kinda helped a little ... And FTR - IMO - SERVOCITY has the cheapest prices going for NIB servos . [;)]

RE: Big swamp buggy,.... scratch build?
I am guessing that a tunnel hull design might track straighter and probably be worth a little more speed?
Hey , first , let me say that I was not intending to sound wrong ... just was making a fact about a few others who would have jumped ALL over you for asking that question ... ( sorry - didn't mean to sound like I was attacking you there [:o] ) Now , I tried this on a very popular pre-made ( manufactured ) fibreglass hull and honestly , did not like the results . First , I thought the engine was too heavy .... then I a lighter engine ... and after finally getting one that would push it decently , the turning was actually something that not even close to being #100 on my top hit parade . ( first try was a pair of air rudders , then removed them and went to a water rudder - it did better , but seemed to "shove" the boat more than turn it ) After numerous attempts , and ALL failures , I removed all the gear , engine and what-nots and switched it back over to marine nitro water prop powered . Bummer .[&o] I , personally , think , as Hal ( Cajun Gator ) stated ... flat bottoms are WAY more fun to run . ( and are a LOT more forgiving if you modify them somewhat - whether by changing engines , rudders , or rudder types . )
