RE: Great Planes Seawind
Thanks to all who have posted on the Seawind. I got mine December of 06 and have taken my time putting it together and making sure it was right. I have been hesitant about flying it off water due to all the problems I have read about here. After double and triple checking everything I made an attempt at flying off water. This will be the primary use for this plane. I have the ACE Seamaster and have flown that many times so I am not new to flaot flying. Well, the first attempt was as expected. The oversized water rudder caused me to over control and caused it to drop a wing tip and end the first flight. Even slow taxi speeds will cause the wing tips to submerge. I reduced the size of the water rudder by two thirds and removed the leading portion in front of the post. I also fabricate wing tip floats very much like the floats on my Seamaster. Off to the lake I went yesterday for another try. Conditions were perfect with a 3 MPH breaze creating just a slight ripple. With the wing tip floats installed and the reduced water rudder it handled perfectly. I was able to make corrections on my take-off run with out adverse complications. There is a definate tecknique for taking off so you don't porpoise but that all comes with the learning curve as with any plane. Take-off was great using 5/8" of down flaps and gently using up elevator once speed was achived. In the air and flaps "up" it flew better that I expected with very little trim adjustments and hardly NO change in pitch during the transition to flaps "up". Landing was uneventful as I have read here that they must be kept very shallow and avoid and bounce. This was good advise as it will bounce and keep bouncing untill speed is gone. The second take-off, flight, and landing was simply a joy as the truly is a GREAT plane to have in you hangar. For those of you who have had trouble getting off the water, don't give up! Keep it headed stright, increase power until "on step" and slowly continue adding power until it is "light" on the water and then add in some elevator. What a sight to behold! The only problem I encounted was two ofthe engine cowl mount screw holes broke so I have to re-inforce the with some fiberglass tape and epoxy before the next flight. I might take the extended wing tip floats off for the next flight as some have called them "trainning wheels" but the work so well I may just leave them on. I covered them in red covering and the help with visiual referance in flight. This is the set-up the my Seawind. I have added the usual amount of weight in the nose causing the total weight to be as everyone elese's. CG is as specified in the manual. Auto bailer remove and plugged. Servos as per manual. Engine is Magnum .91 fourstroke with Master Airscrew 13 x 8 three blade prop running 10% nitro fuel, side mounted. Control surfaces set as per manual and found these to be just fine. Thanks again to all those who have posted comments in this forum as each of you added to my initial flight success. Don't give up on the Seawind as it really is a Great Plane to fly!!!!! Postflight inspection revealed that the bulkheads in the tail section/engine pod, had popped loose and the hatch cover screws on top of the engine pod had chaffed into the fuel tank. Goes to show you that a good inspection is required after each flight as with any airplane. I still like the Seawind even with it's manufacturing faults!

RE: Jets in Las Vegas
A few of us will be flying at the William McCool Memorial field on Sunday. One or two turbines and a few high power EDF's. The field is located at 36 18'51.76" N 115 11'54.28" W. It is located on Horse Drive at Aviary Way in North Las Vegas.
This thread sucks.
Wrong. This thread is great. It has caused a few select idiots to show their true "colours". Great thread. Great project. Great event. Great piloting. Did I say Great project? Don't mind the idiots. Discussing anything with them is like talking to the crazy homeless guy on the corner that fist fights with Mr. Nobody.
After all of our sweat and toil to get the field ready to host this event it is sure nice to read something positive about our field for a change. How about it? To all of the Jet flyers who came, what did you think of our flying site? It is the only site in So Cal. that is not restricted for air space or over flight area.
Dan, The site was GREAT. Everyone was freindly and it was a great event. Don't let the events on this thread get to you. It don't mean nothing. ;) Even the wind was not all that bad. :)
If the primer I used is OK for finish, has anyone tried to buff with rubbing compound to get more gloss? Will the primer benefit from this process?
Try some fine cut polishing compound on it. The 3M works good for me. You should be able to get a nice gloss if you have already hit it with 1500.

RE: F-117 Crash at BITW
Bottom line is "will you answer the call, or run away like a little ****"? Many of you hardcore critics would have dropped the TX and ran screaming like a little girl. I can still hear that woman in the video repeatedly saying "ditch it", "put it in", don't try to fly it", "Be a woman", "I'm scared". Yeah, her voice was deep, but it was a woman. That to me was a jet hatin', short runway club belongin', max dihedral trainer flyin' wuss. Good thing there was a dose of testosterone on the sticks.
Hey Paul, Were you there? I must have missed you? By the way. That deep voiced "woman" (maybe your ideal women?) never said ditch it until the base went long towards the parking area and then the Jet turned in towards the pits. The wind would have been about 20 deg off the nose on a straight in approach to the runway. When the plane turned final it was out of sight to everyone except those that were either in the parking area or in the pits near the flight line. Joe did a good job by "ditching" it in the dirt and not trying to make the runway. Too bad that berm was there. Maybe you should get the facts before you start calling people names for making the same responible call that the pilot did. I think the best service that could have been done for Joe was for everyone to move away from the flightline instead of walking out in harms way to see the crash like a bunch of cattle.

RE: BVM EDF
Well if it is a Castle controller then it would have been the HV110 rated at 12S lipo and 110A. Chris is correct. Steve did not actually say that his motor was used. Most everyone already suspected that anyway. As for the 117mm fan. Just because it had the Viofan housing does not mean that it did not have a cut down rotor, motor housing and stators from another off the shelf unit. As for the "top secret" part of it. Why would BV be seen as endorsing a competitors product by showing off a setup such as described above. It would not be wise to retool for a new product for a "proof of concept" plane.

RE: BVM EDF
The "cover the intakes so nobody can see what I am flying" is so cheesy. The info is all out there, if he had anything special under the hood, he would show it. I think it will be an "Aeropoxy Solution": somebody else's motor and battery anodized purple. Otherwise, what's the big secret?
It is probably due to two reasons. Covering the intakes increases the hype and speculation. If it is just a proof of concept build then he would not want people to see another manufacturers fan installed if he plans on marketing his own fan unit. Other than that there is no point.

RE: BVM EDF
ORIGINAL: F106A Hi, I'm curious about the cost. I've read it's an alternitive for those who can't afford turbines. EDF can't be cheap. I read on one of the forums that it costs around $500 to get a Hobby Lobby Mig in the air, and that's a foamie. I'm sure the motors are expensive, high power, precision motors don't come cheap. Then there a ESC that has to be able to handle a high amp draw, several high capacity batteries, charger, etc. Anyone have a WAG what it would cost to get a Bandit type model in the air? BRG, Jon
High power EDF are about the same price as a single Wren 44 turbine engine. These two EDF's would be just about the same price as a Jet Joe turbine but they are 90mm diameter fan units. Around $1600-$1800 ready to fly. Cost is similar to glow ducted fans without all of the frustration. Chris would know what the all up ready to fly Viper would cost with a 120mm diameter fan. Performance increases every year with advances in battery, motor and fan technology. [link=http://www.crosswindcomposites.com/videos/F22F16.wmv]Video 1[/link] If I want to go fly my EDF all I need to take to the field is the plane, my TX, a couple flight packs and a hand pump for the retracts/gear doors. I dont need a turbine waiver. I can fly at almost any field. No restictions. Just plug it in and go fly.

RE: New Composite F-16A Block 15
The redesign of this electric 90 mm jet to a MW44 powered turbine version will require new tooling to be created due to engine placement requirements and some time in redesign to handle the increased speeds and flight loads. If there is enough interest in the small jets I will go ahead with the kevlar composite fuel tanks and other such details. If not I will probably not waiste my time and just install two kidney tanks on the CG. The tanks, fuel, ecu, pump, etc. will weigh about the same as the flight batteries used to power the EDF model now. The Wren unit weighs the same as one of the EDF units, motor and ESC. Any weight increase will come from structural improvements. I expect the RTF weight to increase from 6.5 lbs to around 7.5 lbs with this conversion. Some of that increase will come from the addition of flaps and rudder. I have a question. What is the benefit of a bypass? I notice some turbines use them but some do not. Thanks Ted
