RE: 1/5.5 Scale SU-34
ORIGINAL: invertmast Joe, I'll keep an ear turned towards your thread to see if you have any luck. I was just inquiring to him being able to enlarge his current F-14 gear and make a few minor changes to the mounting system, so it should of been simple for him.
I've been on vacation and now have a long back log of work to move on. You both have very ambitious projects that require more time and resources that I have at my disposal. I dont think I will be able to meet your expectations for cost and schedule. Your expectation is that this should be a simple matter of pressing a button to make the parts larger to fit your projects. Unfortunately this is not true. Scaling up my 1:10 designs to 1:7 will not insure that stock sizes that needs to be ordered will be available and so I would need to redesign to the next closest stock size. this also requires more design time. All parts are machined not cast and each part requires 2-3 holding fixtures for each part for each machining process. That means even with your CAD models I have to re design each part and the fixtures for each part. In short, I will have more time (design and programming) and $$$ invested just in the "tooling" to make the parts than I will make on the low number of sets that you require. I think that maybe you have shopped this around and the prices came back to high for you to accept. You both have good CAD skills, I think that if you took the time to produce detailed working drawings that a machinist could reasonably understand then you could go to any machine shop in the phone book and get a quote. I dont want to say I'm not interested but for now I dont want to be holding up your projects.

Well finally finished the project. Many thanks to Pablo for completing the maiden flight at E Jets International. The SU-27 has 2x DS94 fans with 1527 1.5Y motors running 10s. Clocked @ 125MPH. Im hoping for 160+ with 12s for the next flight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3TKP2Tj6hM&feature=player_embedded P.S. the gear worked fine and I may even put doors on it now. RE: Tamiya/Mato Sherman conversion?
Ok guys, I think I now know what to do. I will remove the 17 pounder gun and put in a 76 mm gun. I will then put the turret that came with the Tamiya kit and put it on the Mato cast hull with VSS suspension to make it a Fire fly. I will look for the other upgrade parts later. Im not that much a purest to make the fine detail changes but I would like to have the correct outline... Thanks for your help. John

The gun is a Tamiya, "17 pound gun" upgrade part. It may not be the correct gun for this model turret.

Well Im no expert and all I wanted to do was add an airsoft gun to my Tamiya Sherman so I could battle my son with his HL Tiger. So my question is, Did this Sherman ever exist? If it did what designation is it? If it didn't then its no big deal I can change it. Thanks, John

RE: My F-14 Tomcat building
Mike, The wing box is in two sections. The motor shown is direct drive but draws too much current and makes the drive transistor run very hot. The motor has capacitors. The brackets are the limit switch mounts. This jack screw drive is not very robust. It has side play even with the extra rods I have on the sides. The gear motors I tried work well but it runs very slow. This is not the way to go for a larger scale setup. I have a new design that will be compatible with your plans but will not use the jack screw. Im going to build a set for 1:8 scale to test it out. If it works out I will make it for the 1:10 (For what I consider a good EDF size.) The price for the 1:8 wing box and actuators and linkages will be around $625. Thats for a drop in fit to your plans.

RE: My F-14 Tomcat building
Guys, I have a complete 1:10 scale, swing wing (in two styles) and gear for sale. Lets face it at 1:10 its a great size for EDF and a little too tight a fit for 2 small turbines. I would be interested in doing a larger size F14 setup. So far no one has expressed that one size yet. I cant make gear and swing wings for 4 different size F14s. I can do one more size. Perhaps you could start a poll to see what size most people would like to have as a larger F14. Then I may be able to offer something. Our gear bolt onto the wing box but the expectation is that if your doing an F14 project then you should be able to make landing gear mounts to fit your project.

I've got an email into matrix machine to see if they can enlarge the 1/10 gear to 1/8 and for how much, but i dont expect much back from them, as they never respond to my emails. Now, here's the big question. How much is everyone willing to spend for a F-14 epoxy fiberglass/carbon fuselage w/ all panel lines and surface detailing? It will have 12 bulkheads already installed (stab pivot bulkheads, swing wing bulkheads, Main and Nose gear bulkheads, turbine mount rail bulkheads, and 2 bulkheads running down the center of the fuselage the length of it from the stab bulkheads all the way to the swing wing bulkheads. All bulkheads will be 1/4" ply w/ carbon reinforcements w/ substantial ligtening holes to save weight, but still strong. And how many people would be interested? I could probly have the basic plug built in about 2-3 months. Surface detailing and mold making would take longer. I also might have a lead on machined parts for the swing wing box. Or the second option is an all composite wing "box". Depending on the amount of interest (which i know its probly bad timing since Fei-bao, FEJ and skymaster are all coming out with an F-14 within the next year to year and a half) I may also do a composite horizontal stabs and verticals. The wings i'm not sure, as i want to have functional lead edge slats and spoilers, and im not sure how to build an all composite wing with that much "stuff" on it.
Hello Thomas, I can make 1:8 F14 gear for under $1,400. Im not sure why you never received my emails. You sent me 2 emails in 2004 and I replied to both of them. I can also make the swing wing. Thanks,

RE: dcu f-14
rhallgarth, We are just about to release another swing wing mechanism that is compatible with the Avond's plan. It will drop in as per the plans but is not exactly the same as the design on the plans. Its a jack screw type and will include a motor, screw, guide rail, actuator arms, wing box, limit switches and servo lead to plug into your receiver. Uses an aux 4.8v battery pack to operate the motor. The worm drive design shown on our web site would also fit but it is a drop in fit to the DCU kit and more work would be required to fit it into the Avond's 1:10 plan. P.S. Phone and emails are answered at the end of the day or else I would never get anything done.

Matrix new product announcement, Mig29 Gear actuators !
We are pleased to announce our FC Mig-29 gear replacement actuators. You have waited long enough to get that big Mig29 in the air. Here is your chance to replace your "non locking" air cylinders or that heavy, expensive and complicated hydraulic system. The actuator arms are completely hidden in the air frame so it will look as good as it works.. Simply remove the air cylinders of the original Mig 29 gear. Make small plywood mounts using the supplied drawings and connect the actuator rods. Now your ready to use your gear with positive up and down locks. Pre-production introductory price of only $749. This is an after market product, we are not affiliated with Fiber Classics. http://home.earthlink.net/~matrixmt/id13.html

RE: F-14 wing test video
Here's our entry into the swing wing arena. http://rcuvideos.com/item/M9SL06SJNDD627F2 It's a drop in fit for DCU / Jetmart F14s but is heavy enough to swing a larger wing. It uses servos and a worm gear. Since they are servo controlled you can program your radio to move the wings back when gear is up and full throttle or move them forward when in a turn or low throttle automatically. Customer flight testing this summer. Just attach wings and fly. Comes with former templates. Price $349. http://home.earthlink.net/~matrixmt/id7.html

RE: My F-14 Tomcat building
Mike, You are right its on the heavy side and over kill for the 1:10 scale but most of the parts are already on the jet so its adding about 12 oz. Backlash may be a problem too. Im going to try it out on my F14 project. In addition to the worm gear I will offer a jack screw version based on the Avonds plan. It will use the Hitec HS-785HB servo and gear to rotate a 1/4-20 thread rod 9.5 inches. (requires more gearing) I like the servo because its very simple and low cost. A Jetmart type actuator would also work but I would still use the 785 servo to power it. It rotates 4 times per full transmitter stick input.
