RE: TamJets A-4 problem tucking issue
Buck, It's been way too long for me, but if I remember correctly the slats deployed as a function of AOA. You COULD use their position on approach to judge your AOA/airspeed if you lost either; half travel of the slats was on-speed. The Blues bolted the slats shut to prevent the uncertainties and gyrations associated with slat deployment, especially assymetrical slat deployment. I have to agree that lighter weight/wing loading will help. Keep the power on in the turns and smooth control inputs. I got a few minutes on one of Tam's before I bought my kit and I thought it flew very well. Tom

RE: Hotspot got new legs!!!!
Roger, What gear are you using and where did you get them? Are they a drop-in fit to the Hotspot? Have you flown with them yet and, if so, how do you like them? I would also like to convert my Hotspot to trailing leg struts as my local field is grass. Thanks, Tom

RE: Ricky bike steering question
It works! Actually. workED is the proper word. My daughter was driving it in a fairly large parking lot and hit a curb....twice! I think she accelerated as she got close instead of hitting the brake. The steering no longer responds. It did after the first hit, but not after the second. The servo, if there is one, seems to be cycling rapidly back and forth, with minimal response to steering command. Any ideas before I break into the bike? Tom

Ricky bike steering question
I just tried the radio on my kids Ricky bike. The steering appears to be backwards. When I turn the Tx wheel counterclockwise, the bike wheel turns right. Tx wheel clockwise, bike wheel turns left. I'm charging the 7.2V motor battery as I type this, so I haven't tried to run it yet to check if there's some dynamic counter-reaction that I'm not anticipating!! I checked the manual and the Tx for reverse switches or instructions, but this is not addressed. Any ideas? Tom

RE: AMT USA
Regarding UPS tracking numbers; if a person ships from an outside vendor, the number issued is sometimes a REFERENCE number. The UPS site has two tracking options, one uses REFERENCE numbers and the other TRACKING numbers. My local mailboxes place issues reference numbers and I learned all this when I asked them why I couldn't track a shipment. Tom

Stabilizer static balance?
How many of you guys are static balancing your all-flying stabilizers? I am preping an old X-Terminator, BVM/Viojett powered, and checked the stab for balance. The stabs are significantly tail heavy and will require about 4 ounces of lead (2 ounces in each stab leading edge) to static balance neutral. I'd probably need another 2 ounces in the nose to offset the weight if I can't take care of it with the battery pack. So, do I need the additional 6 ounces of weight, or do I simply use a strong servo to prevent stab flutter? What would be the minimum servo power you would recommend if I go the "strong servo" route? Thanks, Tom

RE: Turbofan simulation
I have also been thinking of the same arrangement and the three biggest concerns I have are max RPM generated by the fan, the vibration at that RPM and possible FOD damage should a fan blade be knicked or shed. I have no idea what kind of RPM the fan might turn while freewheeling at high speed. It will probably be best to approach max speed in increments and see what results you obtain. Good luck.....keep us informed! Tom

Thanks for that link, I'm going to get one. I'm in the midlle of another discharge/charge cycle. This time I'm using my SuperNova 250S charger. I was too lazy to dig it out yesterday. So far everything looks good. Also, it IS a NiCd pack. Thanks for the input, I'll keep you informed. Tom

Very odd cycling results...any ideas?
I have a 3.5 year old Tx pack that has sat unused since purchased new in the summer of 2005. It is an 8 cell pack using KR-1100 AAU cells. I thought I would cycle it several times to condition the pack and determine it's state of health. Using a Hobbico Accu-cycle Pro series cycler, I charged the pack at a rate of 125 ma until it went into trickle mode, about 15 hours. I checked the voltage at the completion of the charge. Using a Hobbico MK II ESV, the pack gave a steady 11+ volt reading. The ESV instructions do not list the value of the load applied to the pack. So far, so good. I then discharged the pack, using the same Accu-cycle, at the 500 mah rate. The capacity at the completion of the discharge read 1008 ma. Not too bad for a first cycle. It then charged at the 125 ma rate until auto-switching to trickle after another 15 hours or so. The voltage again read a steady 11+ volts. I started another discharge using the 500 mah rate. After 310 minutes(!) and 2535 ma(!!), I interupted the discharge, thinking the Accu-cycle surely malfunctioned and discharged the pack below the minimum 1.1 volts per cell. I checked the voltage using the ESV and it held a steady 10 volts for at least 2 minutes! OK... back to another charge cycle at the 125 ma rate. I disconnected the pack after it entered auto-trickle and let it sit for 20 minutes. I then checked the voltage with the ESV and it read 11+ volts. I confirmed this with my Futaba 9C Tx, which showed the pack delivering 11.1 volts. I haven't yet cycled the pack again. I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas what might be going on with this battery. Do I have a super-pack? Is the bulb burning brightest before it's about to burn out?? Is all my equipment faulty??? Thanks for the input. Tom

I'm shopping engines for my Great Planes 1/3 Pitts and can't find the cowl! I'm looking at some of the 45-50cc twins and want the engine to fit completely inside the cowl. Does anyone know the width of the cowl? Anyone have experience/recommendations for a good twin for this plane? I'm looking for strong, scale performance, not 3D. Thanks. Tom

Jet Legend 1/8 F-16 gear question
Here is a tough one guys. I am trying to get measurements of the Jet Legend MAIN landing gear for the 1/8 scale F-16. I am looking for something to use in another application. I need to know the wheel size, the distance between wheels, and the vertical height (straight up from the ground) from the axle to any convenient point of reference. Thanks in advance. Tom

RE: XtremeLinkâ„¢ - 2.4GHz for Futaba, JR, and Hitec radios
Jim said they took 400 units to Toledo and they were down to 20 remaining at 4PM Friday. I bought a TX module and 10 channel receiver for my Futaba and hope to test it this week. Their 6 channel park flyer receiver looked great for the application and should be available by the end of April for $59! No external antenna AT ALL! NOTHING sticking out or hanging in the breeze. Guaranteed 1000 ft range,, but they've tested it out to the limits of their vision. Tom

Li-ion vs Li-poly charging
I am trying to replace my cell phone battery. It was originally equiped with a Lipo battery. A web search of replacement batteries for the phone shows Li-ion as well as Lipo batteries for the phone. The only difference is the -ion batteries are rated at 680 mah vs 700 mah for the Lipos. The price difference is substantial......the -ion run $8.50 and the Lipo $18.95. I need 3 batteries (3 phones), and am willing to give up a few minutes of battery time for the $30 savings. My question is this; will the original wall charger supplied with the phone safely charge the -ion batteries? How about my car charger? I know that Li-pos are extremely sensitive to charging parameters. What about Li-ions? I imagine the charging logic and safety features are contained in the phone circuitry and not the charger. I assume the -ion batteries are acceptable and safe as they are commonly listed as replacements for this phone. I just don't KNOW and don't want to start a fire while charging a cell phone! Any insight is very much appreciated. Tom

RE: Hobbico Quick Field charger questions
Thanks for the quick reply guys. The packs I am using to experiment have not been used for some time. They did both eventually get to a rapid flashing LED, indicating full charge. I'm presently discharging the TX pack with my SuperNova to learn to use THAT piece of equipment! I will then use the Hobbico Quick Field charger to once again charge the TX pack. Hopefully it will not take as long next time around. Tom
