RE: 1/3rd DVII
Hi Dave Tom K. here. I went to Rhinebeck this past weekend and came home with a 1/3rd scale D-7 kit. I think your D-7 is really nice, I mean really nice, very good job. Oh course I have a million questions about what and how you did yours. I would really like to chat with you on the phone. Email me your no. and I'll call ya. tkfokker@comcast .net I am building this plane for Rhinebeck and FUN only. No competition. As you know I retired from that years ago. Thanks Dave, hope to here from you soon. Tom

RE: Half Scale Fokker DVI
Hi Mike Is there any way I could either have you supply me the parts for a set of 1/2 scale guns, or you build me a set for my 1/2 scale Fokker D-8 project? This is very important to me. Are you familure with my D-8 build? I will be bringing her to Rhine beck in sept. Think I could have a pair for that? Let me know what you think. Thanks, Tom K.

Hi Guys Thanks for that post. I now see how you did it. Great idea on simulating the rivets. That is how I will do it also. Thanks a bunch. I sure wish you good luck on the test flight. I'm sure you will be very successful. I bet she won't want to come down. Those D-6's float for ever. I do hope I can maybe get a chance to get a go at the control's??????????? I can't believe how big she is!!! WOW Very impressive I gotta say. Great job, Looking forward to more pic's. Talk to ya soon. Tom

RE: Half Scale Fokker DVI
Hi Paul @ Barry I have been watching your build with great admiration. I really am excited for you guys and also to see the D-6 finished. Do you think you will make Rhinebeck again this yr. Sure hope it's a better one than last. Believe me in the last 26 yrs. I've only seen it rain twice, so it was bad luck last yr being your first. You boys sure are doing a wonderful job on that airplane. I wish now I had just built one out of wood also. I'm sure it would have been flying for quite a while. Oh well, so I guess I have a hanger queen instead. But a nice one. Do you think it would be possible to lend me or rent me the tools needed to rivet my cowl, and also to purchase the rivets. I will pay all shipping costs. This would be a great help as I have no means of doing this. I really would like to get the cowl finished and painted so I can bring the D-8 to Rhinbeck for show this yr. Let me know. I thank you. Keep up the great work and good luck. Tom K.

Hey Paul Any way you could help me out with this cowl face plate attaching. Rivets and tool rental from you if possible. I'll pay full shipping to and from. Let me know I'd love to get my cowl finished up. Yours really looks very real. Iam impressed with the rivet job. Hope you can help. Thanks, Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
OK Guys, I have to Reply to all of you in this one time, Hope you don't mind. First Paul , Yes I agree the cowl is much softer and not as thick as I wished. Don't know what Glenn or the guys who made it were thinking. Sad for the time it took and the cost. I just gotta be careful with it all the time. I'm sure if ya bump it good enough it will dent. Proflooney Not sure yet what I'll do to cut it. I'll decide on something. It's not going to be fun. MITCH! Congratulations on your test flight. You really did an outstanding job on that airplane. I'm looking forward to seeing her fly. Good for you! Norm The cowl was totally spun from aluminum. No bracing was involved. The front edge did have a double thickness going down to the bottom mounts. The outer edge where the cable went was also doubled up. Thats it. No braces. Jack The cowl was spun from aluminum. On Achim Engels site you can see his repro, just like the original. Thanks all of you for jumping in. I enjoy the conversation, Tom

Hi Dave! How have you been? I keep going on your build to see your DVa But the other guys is always posted. Come on now I want to see your plane buddy! I'm sure it's awesome. The problem is this half scale cowl won't fit on my band saw. So I was thinking of using a scroll saw very carefully! This is not going to be fun. I only have one shot at it. Great to hear from you, stay in touch. Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Hi Paul Fokkers practice was half round off the rim. If you look in any documentation books on the fokkers, mainly the tripes D-6 and D-8's They have the half round. The D-7's did various different things like doors and such. Some what like the albatros. Tom

Norm, Yes I do, but thankyou very much for thinking of me on that. I once had a water pipe break in the cellar over my work shop office desk. My collection of WW-1 aero's were under the break. I'm now on my second set. Not an easy thing to find. and exspensive. Tom

Just to give you an idea how big this thing is. That table it's on is 16 ft. long and 4 ft. wide. It's not easy to build one of these in a small shop as mine!

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Paul Yes I did recieve the cowl today! Holy St That thing is huge. It actually looked too big at first till I got it on the front. Boy I sure can't wait to start cutting it. Thats going to be nerve racking. I will be making my own face plate. Getting the right curve on the sides ain't easy either. Think you could take a pic of what you are using for rivets and post it for me. I still do not know what I will be using. Your D-6 looks sick with all that smoke billowing out of it. What size prop are you swinging on that 150. I have a ZDZ 160 on my D-8.Thanks for jumping in and saying Hi Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Norm Wow thats great, When Brian was at Rhinebeck he and I were good friends. After he left we lost contact. He used to take me up flying at the aerodrome alot. One time when he was flying in the sat. show he landed and broke his tail skid off the D-8. Knowing this would ground the aircraft for sundays show really bumbed me out. So I offered my help and talked him into letting me build one that night. The Fokker flew on sunday! Kermit Weeks now has that D-8. I really miss the old guard at Rhinebeck, I had alot of fun years with so many of them, Now gone from employment there. Rhine beck will never be the same without those special people. Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Norm So nice of you to say that. But I don't compare to those full scale guys ( Achim Engels, Fred Murrin, Rodger Freeman, Brian Coughlin) Those are the real talented builders. Don't get me wrong I dream of building full scale. It's the money that keeps me away. If there's any rich guys out there who would like to fund a full scale project, call me! But really Norm I so thankyou for the kind words. Coming from some one like you who's been in aviation all his life means alot. I have some more pic's, I installed the side panels all the way. Just thru the firewall on for kicks. Tomorrow my cowl will arrive from GTM. I can't wait!!!! Till next time, Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Proflooney Hi That sure is going to be a big project, the Pfalz DXII. Wow that is quite the plane. very cool. I will enjoy watching that build. Good luck with it. Make sure you start a thread on it. Here are some pic's from tonites work. I recieved the paint chip from Glenn at 4:00 pm. Went to HomeDepot and had the landing gear painted and mounted back on the plane by 9:30 5 coats of green, 3 coats of turqose . Heat guns and latex work wonders!! Tomorrow I will continue on the ply panels. Tom OH and P.S. If you notice in the pic's the old sign from yrs. way gone by, Sponsored by GTM. That is from our Top Gun days in the 90's and early 2000's. It just happens to be on the end of the table.

Dave If it can be any help, my half scale is 15- 1/4 On those measurements you showed me. Check that to your two measurements. I really can't say who is right or wrong. I've used the data files stuff alot. And mostly Leo Opdyke's stuff, WW-1 Aero. I went by Glenn's out lines and the original ones from Leo. Good Luck Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Few more things finished or close to. I recieved some hardware from McMasters Carr I needed to attach the ply fairings. So It was fun being able to add them to the fuselage. The top deck is all on, but the side fairings are temporary while I work on the carburetor intake tubes. They need to be mounted .. Also adding ply doubling ring around outside of intake tube. Cowl should be here on thursday. Not much time to get it temp. mounted for a static show on this coming sunday. Looking forward to getting her out of the house. Hopefully wed. night I can paint the subwing. Some more pic's Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Hi Jack! Actually the Fokker wheel cover stem holes were half round off the edge of tireand had leather around the cut out. They were not round like the British planes. Also the cowl was held on with cable grove just like your pup. They had two steel pins on the top of each longeron. The cowl sliped over into a drilled hole and the pins retained it. The cable did the rest. Here are some pic's of my finished wheels. Next I will paint the subwing. The rims spokes on the Fokkers did not show like the British planes. The rim and spokes were not so off centered like your British ones. The spokes went in on the rim center like todays bikes. Yours went more to the outside of the rim I think resulting in seeing the complete spoke. Good to hear from you. Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Joe Don't go getting me in trouble with your wife!!! Very good pic for your next project! I always liked that plane. If I ever build one from the other side it would be either a Nieuport 11 or a Morane A-1. I really like the Morane alot. I've had one since 1989. The Nieuport is small and simple, would make for a quick build. Good luck, Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Hi Dave Yes water based paints, that would be correct. You still have to dope the fabric. The big advantage to this is the fact that you can have any color made at a much cheaper price, plus putting it on is less messy and smelly. I like the water clean up. Although you can never beat the real dope finish, the water based paints look fine. As long as you seal good with dope first of course. I myself am looking forward to Glenn's D-8 kit. But 800.00 right now is a little out of the question. At first I was slated to build the prototype but he changed his mind and decided to do it himself. Have a great day Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Hi John F Home Depot, in the paint section. The kit is 10.00, extra air cartridges are 5.00 well worth it. I have spray guns, air brushes and such and I love these cheap o's.I mix my latex around 35-40 to one. Test it first. Too much water makes it bead up alot. Also need to dry it with a heat gun. You can add Flotrol, to make it smooth out more. Or a little dish soap. Latex is great once you learn how to spray it good. Good Luck, Tom

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Abufletcher Thanks for looking in, I also watch your builds with great interest. I learn from each and every person who submits plane builds! Today I got home from work and came right down to the shop to paint my wheel covers with Home Depot Berh paint. I mix it with windshield washer fluid and spray it thru those cheap throw away spray guns. Works great! No Mess, No Smell!!!! You have to dry it with the heat gun to get it to flow good. I sprayed three coats in 1-1/2 hrs. Done. Next I will paint the subwing, but waiting on Glenn for my turqouse paint chip. I also ground off all the writing on the tires, Made in China did not look cool|! Here's some more pic's Tom

Hughes500E Thanks, I was once a young model builder myself. I always looked up to the so called veterans of the hobby to learn from. So I know just how you feel. Do your best, and your plane will be just perfect! Here are some pic's of the latest work gentlemen. The boys from Ohio building the 1/2 scale D-6 taught me how to make a scale looking wheel collar. So here you go. Thanks Guys!!! Also I will be painting the sub wing and wheel covers this week. Then I can put the tires back on. Next week I will add the ply fairings back on. Hopefully my cowl will arrive soon. That will be next to work on. Till next time, Thanks for looking and jumping in guys, Tom
