RE: Midwest AT-6 gone Electric
Weight is about the same, within 1/2 lb. Electric is much better performing. The 2.0 Brison was way overpowered, and as a result, it was hard to find a prop that would the fly the plane well, but still slow down enough to land comfortably. The model was built without flaps.

Midwest AT-6 gone Electric
Some of you may remeber this bird from a couple of years back. It's my Midwest AT-6 Texan done in NM National Guard colors. Wingspan is 83", weighs 14 lbs. Power is an Exceed R/C Monster Power 160 (same as Eflite power 160), on 6s 5000Mah. Turns a 20x15 APC prop, and can get about 8min of good flight time without stressing batteries. This bird was flown with a 2.0 Brison gasser for several years before the recent conversion to electric. Here's a video of the 2nd flight last weekend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P25MRqDbXfY&feature=player_embedded

RE: 2.4 Satisfaction Poll
Yeah, I'm an Airtronics user too. When I posted this poll, Airtronics did not have a 2.4 system yet. I was considering an XPS system for my Stylus. I have since purchased bot an SD10-G, and an RDS8000.

I have always used a 24x10 on my Sachs 4.2s, however, they were always in warbirds. A 26x8 may be a better choice on the Cub.

I definately don't want to limit my amps to 45. Motor is designed for 60 amps, with a burst of 78 amps on 9s or 10s. Been doing some research, and the spcs on this motor are the same, as the E-Flite Power 160, right down to idle current, resistance, weight, and size. Hmmmm.

Exceed Monster Power 160
I just acquired an Exceed RC Monster Power 160. for a ridiculous price, and think it might just be a good power choice for my 80" T-34C. I am wanting to turn an 18x12, or so 3-blade prop at around 6500-7000rpm max. Looking for info from those with experience with this motor. What speed controller are you using? What size packs? What prop? What plane? Results???

RE: Why aren't there more ARCs in the market?
Back in the 90's, I talked to an importer at length about this. I was told, that most people would not buy an ARF, if they could see the quality of the build. Hence an ARC only revealed what was really under the skin.

Has balancing a model become a "lost art". I have built hundreds of models over the last ~50 years. Some are nose heavy, some are tail heavy. Some balance perfect. Just balance them. It's not a big deal.[8|]

I flew the Turnigy 42-50 (same motor, just rebadged by Aeolian) in a 7lb Tiger 2 arf,. Used 13x8 prop on 5s. Very good performance. Here's a vid shot on a 12x6 prop. Much better on the 13x8: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVnf_Nc-oBc

RE: Adrian Page 1/5 scale Gee Bee R-2
Don, Glad you like it. I have been messing with smaller electric indoor stuff for a while, but, I just can't get into small models. I recently decided to power a 125" B-17, I have been building, with electric power, so that's what I have been testing power systems for. Now that I have dicovered electric, a lot 40-60 size stuff I have sitting around may get into the air. Like a .40 size twin Comanche, and a .60 Byron V-35 Bonanza. Oh yea, I almost forgot about the 80" T-34C that is nearly ready to put a finish on. I'm all "ate-up" with stuff. Reminds me of when I first learned to fly. Wanted build everything I saw.[:D] Here's a few pics of the B-17 so far:

RE: Adrian Page 1/5 scale Gee Bee R-2
Some more pics. Last pic is the dummy radial. I will cut out the excess between the cylinders and add pushrod tubes, plug wires etc. I have assembled the model with this set-up, and balance is almost dead-on. I have not mounted the servo tray in the fuse yet, so I can slide it around to get perfect balance.

Adrian Page 1/5 scale Gee Bee R-2
So I "doinked" my Tiger 2 last weekend, and need to put this electric gear in something. Well, hanging around my shop, is a framed up AP 1/5 R-2, set up for an OS.91 Surpass. Lately, I don't seem to have much interest in glow, so I thought "why not"? After a few calculations, I find out it's about the same weight as my Tiger 2, so the gear that flew the Tiger would be perfect in this model. Looking to see a rtf weight of about 7.5 lbs, or less. The Tiger was 7 1/4 lbs and flew great with this power. 8-10 minutes of good spirited flight, and only use about 50-65% of my packs. Using a Turnigy SK 42-50-650KV with 5s 5000mah pack. 13x8 APC prop. The main problem, was where to put the batteries. I needed them way forward, but not enough room on the firewall, due to cowl mounts. Too much hassle to build a hatch in an already framed and sheeted model. So, I cut an opening in the lower firewall, and built a tray to slide them in. Next I needed a mount that was 3" long, so I whipped out some 1/8" ply and fabbed one up. Easy Peasy. Now, I need to find a way to mount the cowl so battery access will be easy. Already had blind nuts and cowl mounts installed, so I just ran some long screws thru the blind nuts, from the back side. Then put some heatshrink on them to create guides. Next I installed some pushrod tube in the mount holes, for the guides to slide into. Then I installed magnets (1/4" x 1/8") in the cowl and firewall. Holds extremely tight.
