Crank That Starter!!!
I had been dragging my clumsy flight box to the line to use my starter and got this crazy idea the other day. Being cheap stirs me to use available resources. I have four Ryobi 18 volt battery packs in my truck at any given time. I was trying to figure how I could use one to power my Kavan starter. While in Homey Depot today a light went off. I grabbed a 1-1/2" in plastic nipple used to connect large plastic pipe and went home and whittled on it with my dremel and hear is what I came up with. I cut a slot in the nipple to allow the plug end of the battery to slide into it. I ground a grove in the top of the nipple match the curve of the starter. I put a small piece of self adhesive velcro on the starter and secured it with two tie wraps. Very solid and easy to do. I used a couple of bananna plugs to make contact with the battery lead. I just drilled a hole slightly smaller then threaded end of the plug and self tapped it into the hole at the same location as the battery contact. By screwing the plug in and out I could get a firm enough contact to hold the battery in the nipple. The wire leads from the starter were inserted in the wire lead and secured withe the screw of the bannana plug recepticle. You could use a hose clamp to secure the battery in the nipple even better. An 18 volt battery may be a little overkill but this would work for all those 14.4 packs that out there for these tools. Another advantage is I can plug my charger into the bannana plugs for a quick charge if needed with out draggin my tool box all over the field. Total cost of this conversion $2.50. Wayne Galligan

George, Got any pictures of the OS 1.60 setup? What carb are you using? 8K on the bench could translate to about 83-8400 as it unloads. I have run a Mejlik 19x10 on an OS 1.40 and it would tach about 75-7600. It had a very constant speed but needed just a little more punch in the wind. I like the idea of running gas in a pattern plane. After running a gasser for the last year and recently getting back to the nitro(slimers) the gas planes do have their merits. The fuel economy alone would pay for the conversion. Hope to see you at Dons clinic at the end of the month. Wayne Galligan

The needles are very sensative when close to being set. When you get it right you may have to choke the engine each time you start it. On the start up you may not be able to advance the throttle till it warms up good. This may give you the impression that it is too lean.... DONT touch the needles till it is warmed up good(BTDT). You have to adjust the top end sometimes after making a low end adjustment. If you lean the bottom end you may have to richen the top end, but do it in very small increments. DONT try to adjust it like a nitro/achohol engine... not the same.

I have been running this engine for over a year now and it has been a nearly flawless motor. Only time it didnt run right was my fault messing with the needles. I run a Vess 22A on mine. A lot of people will swear by certian props. As far as top rpm... I could care less about that as I am more concerned with how the engine performs on transition. What really matters is... what does the plane like? I am flying a 27% Ultimate. Lots of drag so it need lots of pull (traction). So the lower pitch prop is perfect for this plane. I havent tried a 23A or 22B and I am sure this engine will pull either just fine. It has the power to take it staight up on demand at most any attitude without any lag even after extended low rpm run and thats important to most any seasoned pilot. BTW from what I have experienced so far the Vess is one of he quieter props out there. Cant really go wrong with this engine from a value point($390 shipped including accessories). And certianly no problems with the service from Bob Kramer (DLUSA.COM)who markets them localy here in Texas. Wayne

Fuse for Genesis wings/stab set
I have a set of wings,stab and rudder for a Genesis. Thinking about building a fuse for them. The root chord is tapered from wide at front to narrower toward the rear of the chord. Is there a fuse out there that would match up with this wing set? Fuse kit built up or composite. I just cant seem to find a Genesis fuse as they seem to be quite fragile and are destroyed rather easy. Just the fuse kit alone is as expensive as some complete kits. Cant just let these wings go to waste. Any ideas are welcome. Wayne Galligan

NedYob, Get the aluminum stand offs from Bob at DLUSA. I had the original mounts and they broke afer 15 flights. They are only $20. So far all I can say about my DL is its like runnin an OS 2-stroke. Smooth and dependable starts, gobs of power and a great bang for the buck. I have mine mounted in a GP Ultimate. I made a hole in the firewall as with the stock mounts the carb is just a 1/4" away from the firewall. Runs great and no problems. After I switched over to synthetic I had to richen the top and bottom end 1/8 turn. I was running LawnSludgy for the first few gallons. www.dlusa.net Smooth FLying... Wayne

I am using the Vess 22A on my DL50 Ultimate and it is very quite. FLys the Ultimate JUST RIGHT. Another guy at the flying field was running a smaller 45 size gasser with a Zinger and it ripped so loud I though the engine was coming off. He was really surprised as a I made a full bore low pass with no prop rip. He had a couple of Vess' in his box but hadnt run cause he thought they didnt look right.... hmmmm. If they hadnt been drilled for his motor I'd of snatched em right up. I have three gallons through mine now and it has been nearly flawless. Had two flame outs and both time were a few seconds after pulling to a vertical. It would restart and run just fine afterwards. Probably a burp of air is only thing I can think of. Vess 22A and I am switching from LawnSLudgy to synthetic next fillup. I haven't touched the needles since the first half gallon of fuel. Runs at about 7250rpm. Just like running my OS nitros. Wayne

I moved the c.g back to its original location that I started with. Now the plane will flat spin and snap well. So increasing the incidence has cured all most all off the issues I had with this Ulitimate. The first though was a c.g. issue but further invesigation and trim changes proved otherwise. I have ended up with zero/zero on stab to bottom wing and -1.5 degrees on the top wing, stock downthrust, added 1 degree rt thrust. Plane flew great today, tracks well and does most everything that I could ask it to do. Thanks to all that responded. Wayne

They are 2 5/8" You can get them from Bob at DLUSA for $20.00. I just replaced the stock mounts because they broke. Lucky I got it down in one piece as two of the bottom tabs where broken and one top one was cracked. One note here. I was changing thrust by shimming between the firewall and stock mounts. This may have tweaked the mounts causing them to crack. Regardless the newer style stand offs are much, much better. A side note here... you need to cut a one inch hole in firewall to get good airflow to carb.

I know this is old hat but I though it should be brought up. This is where those that said so.... can say " I told you so" The stock mounts on my setup gave out the other day after about 30 flights. It sounded like there was a flutter in something the first time I noticed. Then it happened again as the power came up through 1/3 throttle. I landed immeadiately. I was lucky the engine was not jetisoned as the two bottome tabs at the engine were broken and a third was cracked. Only one tab really holding this 5 hp monster. I stopped by Bobs and picked up a set of aluminum stand offs and installed them today. NICE stand offs and they make for a nice clean install. I had already reinforced the fireall with pins at the mounting points and put a square of c.fiber behind the firewall and it is solid as a rock again. Just my thoughts on the stock mounts. I think they would probably be OK if you dont try to shim them like I did. I adjusted my thrust by putting tapered shims behind them at the firewall. Most likely causing them to be tweaked and weakening them. Last photo is of the original setup. DLUSA does sell the motor with these new stand offs now as standard equipment. Well worth the extra $20.00.

I took out the down thrust(set now at stock except for an extra degree of side thrust) and set the top wing to -1.5 degrees. I moved the c/g forward about a quarter inch. The up lines are real good now and it hold a 45 degree negative good also. It takes some down elevator now when level inverted and it dialed out the down elevator on trim. I actually had to take out a little of the up mix on knife edge. But now it doesn't want to flat spin. I guess I will try moving the c/g back to where I had it which was one inch on front of rear hold down bolt of top wing(wings off). Smooth Flying, Wayne

OK here is what I have done and how it has worked out. Original setup out of the box was this: Stab +.5 degree, bottom wing zero, top wing -.5 degree I then added 1.5 down thrust. to counteract the down elevator trim. This did not work. Then... First attempt I set the bottom wing zero/zero to stab thus giving me zero stab, zero bottom wing and -1 degree top wing. Went and flew. It was better on the knife edge and half the down trim went away. Next I took out half the down thrust as I was still getting a pull to the belly on up line. And it still had a slight pull to belly. I went home and took out all the down thrust and left it at stock setup except for an addtional degress of side thrust. I added another -.5 degree on the top wing and moved the c/g forward .25 inch. So curent setup is zero/zero stab and lower wing, -1.5 degree on top wing. This took out all the down trim and I now have a level elevator. The up lines are near perfect and the 45 degree inverted up line is now locked in. It takes a some down elevator to fly level inverted. HOWEVER it now will not flat spin like it did before. So I am going to set the c/g back to where I originally had it. I will have to report back on this after I change it back. So it seems getting the wings all in the correct incidence has helped and corrected my issues. I had to quit flying early toady as on of the stock DL motor mounts broke. I should have replaced them on installation but according to Bob at DLUSA he said they should be good when mounted properly. Perhaps shimming them for the down thrust put stress on them. Any way I am installing aluminum stand offs that DL offers now with the lastest edition of the motor. The DL engine has performed flawlessly for me so far... knocking on wood. Thanks everyone, Wayne

Well I changed the lower wing incidence to match the stab so effectively I have this. Zero/zero lower wing to stab and -1 degree on top wing. It took out about half the down trim and flew much better. There is less pitch to the belly on knife edge and what is there is more managable with mix. I still think I can go about another .25 degree negative with the top wing and move the c/g forward a smidge. I guess I am thrying to get it to fly too much like my pattern planes. I was told that these Ultimates like as much as -1.5 degrees in the top wing. Smooth flying... Wayne

I have competed in pattern competition for many years and ha many hours of trimming mono planes. I do know what c/g can do and have concidered your thoughts on that. I do also know that wing incidence on these bipes is very important especially the Ultimate an area I have limited knowldge. Todd Blose info is also valubale too as he has had several Ultimates and they all flew well. The incidences are obviously off on my plane and I will correct that and check the c/g also. My first inclination was the c/g. And through discussion with several people on and off this list the incidences seem to be an issue also. After reviewing the answers and thinking about it last night I believe I will take out some of the down thrust. Increase the lower wing incidence +.5 degree to get it even with the stab. Fixing the lower wing is just a matter of shimming the trailing edge. This will give me about -1. degree on the top wing and zero on stab and lower wing then if its still to sensative I can move the c.g. Thanks for the responses. BTW the DL50 has been about as perfect a running engine as I could ask for. Solid as a rock and after 1.5 gal. it has settled in nicely. No burble on midrange and throttles up nicely on the Vess 22A . I may go to the 23A after some more run time and after I switch to synthetic oil. Smooth Flying... Wayne

I believe I typed that in wrong. Here is what it is [size=3]Top wing -.5, Bottom wing zero, Stab +.5.[/size] What I cant understand is: If I have positive +.5 incidence in the stab as compared to the lower wing then why do I need down elevator trim? I could try changing the bottom wing some to see if it makes a difference. Elevator throw through out is parrallel and the ailerons are all in an equal trim. Since changing the wings and stab on this thing is kinda difficult I am thinging about raising the ailerons a bit this I think would effectively induce a negative incidence for starers. I want to say the DL has been about as perfect a running engine (knock on wood) as I could ask for. I have about 1 1/2 gallons through it now and am about to switch to synthetic oil and am looking for even more improvment. Make sure the low end is not too rich as it will cause burbling an cut out about a 1" hole in the firewal for the air flow to carb. I had mine set pretty close after some ground running and just tweaked the low end a little the other day and it has no burble at all now. I am currently using LawnSLudgy at 32:1 and will switch to Amzoil or Pennzoil on next fill at 40:1 Wayne
