RE: “TANKLAND“… that’s what my family calls it.
ORIGINAL: Rex Ross You have a great piece of property for Tankland. Since you are a contractor and you build real structures as well as hobby tanks, I think you should build a guest dormitory so that we could all take turns coming over and spending a week or two using your battlesite. We could all rotate our visits so that there would never be more than 40 or 50 of us at one time. You have no idea how much I wish I lived in Colorado!........next door to you. Rex
I'll take the reservation right after yours Rex. Many times I've thought about moving from California. If I was a younger guy I'd be more serious about it; the closer I get to retirement age the less appealing a big move seems. Would be nice to have a bit more space to enjoy the hobby wouldn't it? Leopard I and II road wheels
What's the difference between a Leo I and Leo II road wheel? Dimensions? bolt pattern? tire dimensions? All sorts of references for Leos 1 and 2; great action shots. cammo. armor thinksness. rounds carried, yada yada but as with most tank refs little useful info. If you have a good ref I'd appreciate it. Many thanks. Jerry

RE: RC Tank Battles in Russia
ORIGINAL: yellowshaker I think that the RC tanks are much bigger hobby in Russia than they are here. The other day I went to a local ball field to test a tank out and everyone came out of the fence to see it. None of them had ever seen an rc tank before.
When I ran model boats at Spreckels lake in San Francisco's Golden Gate park in the early 1980s I often brought one of my 1/10 scale tanks. I'd occasionally run the tank for 5-10 minutes after the end of the boat run period. What a stir it caused! One young boy actually fell into the lake once when he wasn't paying attention to where he was; fortunately the lake wasn't deep close to shore. RC tanks were a lot less common during those days; gas powered unheard of. I always enjoyed the interest and supportive comments. They obviously left an impression as 2 years ago I rejoined the SFMYC and one of the members asked me about the tanks. This was a full 20 years after the last time I was there to run anything. Model tanks are pretty impressive for many people to see for the first time. Jerry

RE: ISU-152 found in Ukraine, running
Did they say where they found it?. Didn't seem to have the dirt of a dug-up vehicle and I doubt they would have been able to start it. Seems to me that stating a vehicle that's been dormant so long is a risk. They didn't show the rescue crew doing anything about fluids and such. I'm sure that cutting torch operation at ~9.28 into the video was to render the main gun inoperative. Sad to have to mutilate it so. Jerry

RE: T-34/76 & T-34/85 Showcase
I began this earlier this year but other tank projects pushed it aside. It's the result of becoming disillusioned with the stock plastic hull. I made a steel hull. It actually mates better than I'd hoped with the plastic upper. As a extension of this work I began to cast the original running gear parts in zinc alloy. The amount of shrinkage is tolerable for this project. Not sure when I'll get back to it. By comparison to what you other guys have done it's a nit. Jerry

RE: Off topic - rant
ORIGINAL: Perry S.  The problem with a thread like this is that the OP’s comments will be examined for correctness by its very nature. The die is cast by the words written.  And unfortunately for the OP there are grammatical errors in his very posts while he is chastising others for such infractions. Unknown to him. If one wishes to throw down the grammar gauntlet (on an RC tank forum for some reason), they should really spend the time to make sure that their condescension’s are correctly parsed. If they do not have that capacity then they should have their posts proof read by others prior. It’s a common tense for internet trolling. As obvious as the clumsy attempt to show their mastery of the usage of ‘whom’ and the all too predictable escalation of vocabulary. Seriously, do you use the word ‘<span style=''font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(251, 252, 255); ''>crepuscular’ on a regular basis? What is the intent in selecting that particular word? To show others that you know it and establish an intellectual high ground? <span style=''font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(251, 252, 255); background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ''>So I would challenge the OP to go back through his posts, add in commas where needed and fix the dangling participles. I would recommend a review of this website before making such posts. <a href=''http://www.grammarly.com/''>http://www.grammarly.com <span style=''font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(251, 252, 255); background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ''>All in all this is what the teeny boppers would call an epic fail of a thread. Bad day? Perry
Feeling better now? I thought my feathers were easily ruffled. Sheese... Please point out where I said my grammar is perfect and I'll gladly retract the statement. I'm sure you will find many errors in my posts. Did you read where I made a blanket condemnation of everyone's writing? Please point that out to me. I'll retract that statement also. Perry you've set a new standard in this thread and should teach us all a thing or two. Certainly you just turned up the antagonism a bit. I'll promise to stop using 25 cent words; you teach us to avoid dangling participles. As the 'OP' I pointed to one thing that I find mildly annoying. I could have just as easily said I dislike overdone weathering on a tank model. The choice to aim posts at me directly was that of the responding poster. I singled no one out but responded when directly attacked. What did you expect? That I would "turn the other cheek"? Guess again. My day was perfect. Thanks for asking! There doesn't seem to be a Chic-fil-A outlet near me. Can't say I've tried Chic-fil-A but I believe I'd prefer In-n Out burgers anyway. Before everyone gets their popcorn out let's call it a day. It just isn't that important to rile everyone up. If the moderator wants to pull the thread that's fine with me. I'm sorry I even brought it up. Please, go wild with your apostrophes. I certainly understand syntax challenges of those for whom American English (and all its odd rules) is not their primary language but there's no excuse for native speakers. Grammar was never my strong suit while in school being a science and mathematics sort of fellow however I've long since recognized the importance of the written and spoken word. I make my share of mistakes but it isn't for lack of trying.... Poor grammar and syntax foster a perception all their own and it isn't very complimentary. Jerry

I am certain when this post is read by the membership many will frown or worse. But this nit just bugs me! I have no doubt that I'm the only one so annoyed by this.... Why is the apostrophe so misused? What did it ever do you you? " I own 5 Tamiya tank's " " The Heng Long's are swell " The usage of an apostrophe in the examples above is not correct. In proper usage the apostrophe is to denote possession as in Luke's light saber or in a contraction such as she's - short for she is. Remember, tanks are swell but tank's aren't unless they own you! ( which in many of our cases is true!) Now back to my shop..... Jerry

RE: Off topic - tools
:D I dunno why I do it Rex. I have addictions of a mechanical sort, help me! Below you may see a drill quartet. On the left is Big Bertha the Giganto Black and Decker- 3/4 capacity 3/4 hp motor. I've never found a practical use for it. It set me back a whopping $7.50 at Alco many years ago. When I got it it had no chuck key and a 3/8" drill snapped off in the chuck. I remember calling B&D to buy a new key and the woman I spoke with quoted me $20. When I told her what I'd paid for it she was indignant; "That's a $___.00 drill!" I went direct to Jacobs and bought 2 keys for $15. To the right is the newly acquired Thor, on the far right a 3/8" Thor of even earlier vintage and above the middle Thor is my trusty little 1/4" mutt drill that my dad gave to me when I was a wee lad. All if these guys run great. The large B&D drips with torque as do both Thor drills. There's a myth I read about Thor drills breaking wrists with their torque; maybe no myth I treat them all with respect... Jerry

Off topic - tools
I have a fondness for old junk; specifically old mechanical things, tools, machines. Yesterday on my way to getting a cheese steak ( hey I've been on vacation - I splurge a little) an antique / 'estate sale' shop down a few doors from the CS shop caught my eye. Besides a few original blow torches in great shape there was a section with numerous tools, mostly files, hammers and uninteresting electric tools. I almost left when this beauty of a Thor model 5423 1/2" drill caught my eye. Wowzers! Long story short for the tidy sum of $20 I took this treasure home. Some minor cleanup, oiling the Jacobs chuck and she was even more beauteous.. I attached it to an isolation transformer, switched it on and slowly increased the voltage. She ran great. I'll check the grease content but she's a great old thing. This tool was built in a time when we did it right here; It was made to last and it has; it was made to be repaired, maintained. Did I need another drill I really don't have a need for? I already have the largest Black and Decker I've ever seen with a 3/4hp motor and 3/4" chuck to matchand numerous other drills I inherited from my dad. No but I'm glad I got it anyway............. Hopefully some day when I kick the bucket someone will get this junk and take care it it also. Jerry

RE: Off topic - more or less
ORIGINAL: yellowshaker Have you checked ebay, Tank? I have seen a lot of different tracks on there from this company. They seem to have the 1/35 scale covered pretty well.
After I posted I actually went and browsed Fruilmodell's website and nary a A7V reference did I see. I think the problem with the OEM tracks isn't really the tracks other than they're so small and therefore the material at the hinge points miniscule. The pins supplied actually have a sharpness to the cut ends which when pushed into the track links actually cuts the plastic damaging the integrity of the link weakening it and making it susceptible to breakage. That hadn't occurred to me until I really looked closely. In hindsight it could have probably been largely avoided if one used different pins or carefully cleaned/ filed the end of the supplied pins. More tedium heaped on an already boring assembly task.... Jerry

Not RC related anyway. Question: has Fruilmodell or anyone made a replacement track set for the Tauro A7V (- a 1/35 model)? If you've ever built one you know why I ask. the stock track while excellent in detail for a 1/35 model is fragile beyond reason. I built one of these many years back, I remember cursing heartily at the track assembly process. I've had to move it from time to time and just tonight the track came apart. Again. Very annoying. Neat model, I have 2 more NIB but I shudder at the prospect of building them. Jerry

RE: Hungarian tank tracks1/16 in metal
ORIGINAL: Perry S.
ORIGINAL: heavyaslead I do not believe that is correct. They are mistaking the part number for the scale. If you look down to the ebay description it says 1/35 scale. Fruil makes metal tracks for the 1/35 scale tanks only and they are not suitable for running, basically pot metal. There's no way a 16th scale track could be 30 euro if the same 35th scale is 27 euro for other tank tracks.
I was wondering that as well. Would be nice but 'static' link tracks may not be suitable for RC use. Also, they seem really inexpensive. I guess it would beg the question of where are those awesome 1/16 scale models they are building the tracks for.  Perry
Look at Friulmodel's own website: http://www.friulmodel.hu/en/metal-tracks-m5/metal-tracks-1-16-p5.8/ http://www.friulmodel.hu/en/atl-1602-turan-zrinyi-i122/ They should know what they're making... Build in 1/10 scale. Geißwerk ( Martin Schmid ) has a wonderful lineup of 1/10 scale track and they are as beautiful as can be. RE: The origins of Heng Long tank designs
I want to believe that not everything HL has made is a purposeful copy. If they did copy down to manufacturing peculiarities then clearly that is wrong. Many manufacturers have made their version of a Tiger, a Panther and the like is the same scale. An investment to make an RC 1/16 scale model must be many orders of magnitude greater as well as the risks associated with that endeavor. If someone is going to make a proper 1/16 representation of a vehicle how many ways could they make it and still hope to have it appeal to a specialty market? The difference must be in the details. I think HL/ Matorro has been trying to copy Tamiya's success not necessarily their products. This is evident by the substantial variation in the mechanics, the electronics, the moldings and development of zinc accessories. This is further supported by the products unique to themselves. Some of the offerings from China have been good to avoid but one can see unique direction and development in areas Tamiya for one has not pursued; whether or not the reason is market depth or other reasons we can't know. HL's investment in producing one of their models, substance, location, packaging must be less that the corresponding Tamiya product so their risk is less. They can afford to make a more diverse product line. We can only hope that Tamiya remains in the very specialty branch of RC modeling that is rc armor. Their products are still best of class as sold. To deny it is foolish; all the bleating to the contrary notwithstanding. HL and the other Chinese manufacturers have their place, their latest offerings are particularly welcome adding a diversity never before seen in this hobby. We can hope that the global economy improves to such a degree that there is room for all. I own all the Tamiya model tanks save the Leo II; I own most all the unique ( none of the those in common with Tamiya) HL, Matorro, Wusan / Trumpeter and Hooben models so I'm familiar with the manufacturing differences of both. RE: The origins of Heng Long tank designs
ORIGINAL: ksoc Credit HL all you want for expanding the hobby and making 1/16 scale tanks affordable, but they clearly would not have done so unless Tamiya had done it first.
And before Tamiya ( discounting Tamiya's 1/21 scale line up - http://www.network54.com/Forum/47207/thread/1337876609/tamiya+1-21+kits- ) Bandai hit us with their 1/15 scale line as previously mentioned. Their - Pz IV also sold here in the States under the 'Entex' label ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Entex-1-15-German-Panzer-IV-F2-Panzerkampfwagen-8479-/120899558802#vi-content ). HL is what it is; from what I can see if you're serious about running one in the dirt it won't hold up long in stock form. I have a HL pz III, StuG III and KV-1. All have been modified with Asiatam lowers, metal tracks / running gear, different gearboxes and more. In fact about the only thing I did use was the upper hull. It would be better if one could just buy the parts they need reasonably priced... There isn't any other HL products that interest me because I can ( and have ) buy a better Tamiya version. While I have the Tamiya KV-1 it's a tad different than the HL version. Where HL shines is in the parts of their product line that don't conflict with Tamiya's. I might get Matorro's HVSS Sherman at some point; have a Wusan T-34 undergoing a on again off again rebuild to eliminate it's paper thin lower hull that has more twists than a politician's platform... And boys... they're ALL toys; unessential to life yet fun as heck to get down on the ground with. Just make sure you're home for dinner and wash your hands. Jerry
