RE: Nitroplanes do the ever give out discounts
You can also google "Nitroplanes discount coupon code" or something like that. I did that when I bought my Diamond 2500 and saved $18. :)

RE: Art-Tech Diamond 2500- initial impressions and question about CG.
Well, I flew it today, and it flew fantastic. It's my first foamie, my first electric plane, and my first glider. It's the largest plane I've ever flown, and is also the first hand launch plane I've had as well. Lots of firsts! Once trimmed, it flew so smoothly and predictably, it reminded me of a .40 sized trainer slowed down to about 1/2 speed. I haven't added flaps yet, so the first landed ended up being accomplished on the 5th approach. It does not want to quit flying in even a 3- 5 MPH breeze. Rolls and loops can be done if you really want to, and the rudder has enough authority to slip it in for landing, which is how I got it down on the 5th approach. I honestly can't say anything bad about how it flies. I'm used to more power, but it's not about that. I'm used to a faster roll rate, but it's not about that, either. What it is about is some relaxing time in a lawn chair with a cold brew on top of a mountain. So, we all know what these things look like from the website, but here's the pictures a friend took. I'm now in the market for some foam- safe CA and packing tape. lol... Hey, it's part of flying, right? :) I can't wait to get out there again!

Art-Tech Diamond 2500- initial impressions and question about CG.
All right, so I ordered the kit as well as a spare battery and the Sky Charger B6AC battery charger on Friday evening and it arrived shortly after noon today. It was packaged well, and other than a few scuffs and dings on the outer box, everything was as it should be. Once everything was unpacked and the directions were read, it took less than ten minutes to have a complete airplane sitting on the floor. Here's my thoughts... 1) Since there was no interaction between myself and NitroModels beyond my initial order, I can't speak of their customer service. I was provided an order # shortly after check out and a UPS tracking # Monday afternoon, both via email, and that was all the communication I feel I needed. 2) The proverbial round peg in a square hole is alive and well with this model- the wing joiner spar is round, but the receiver tubes in the wings are square. It's a tight fit, but I kind of laughed at the engineering (or lack thereof) behind this decision. However, the round wing joiner spar was dented in a few places and wasn't exactly straight. I haven't contacted NitroModels about this yet, so it's not an issue right now. Push comes to shove, I'll go find a similar tube locally for $5 and be done with it. For now, it'll fly with a little dihedral. On a somewhat related note, it's extremely difficult to get the wings to join up inside the fuselage and line the holes up to slide the vertical pegs down to hold the halves together and in the fuse. I'm not sure if this is related to the slightly bent spar, or if it's supposed to be like this and will "wear in" over time. 3) The manual states the CG should be 80mm back from the leading edge, but it actually falls at 64mm, which is right on the spar. The chord at the root is approximately 218mm, so at 80mm, that puts the CG at 37% if I'm guessing right. 64mm puts it at 29%, but I'd like to hear from the pros what they think about where the CG should be initially. 4) I did the zip tie mod to the wing pegs that Tony talks about in the promotional video, and will be doing the packing tape mod to the bottom of the fuselage and wing tips to prevent it from getting gouged like he says as well. Later on, I'll be adding flaps for some crow action and will use my Futaba T8UAF to do so. 5) It does come with a charger despite no mention of this on the website. I think this is a little misleading as you're given the option to buy a $55- $60 charger in the drop down menu, but there's no mention of one coming with the kit. I'm not too disappointed about this, because it is a really nice charger and since I'm a lipo noob, it will help me understand the ins and outs of charging them. Bad stuff I've heard about this kit: 1) The servo gears strip out very easily. 2) The landing wheel falls out of its pocket. I have yet to experience these failures, and will comment on them if/ when they happen. All in all, I'm happy with it, and with the 6% off discount code I found online, I spent $290 and change for the plane, an extra 2200mAh 20C battery pack and the $60 Sky Charger. I can't wait to go fly. :)

T8UAF reciever compatability?
I have a T8UAF on channel 33. It will work with a Futaba FP-R148DF reciever, but not a Futaba R168DF reciever. Is there a reason for this? Thanks!

No man, I'm not talking about a 35' span RC plane... I mean scale them up so you can actually sit in them and fly them.

Scaling up a model to full size?
So we're all flying scale models of real airplanes around... has anyone thought about scaling up a model to be large enough to sit in and fly? Something like maybe a Rascal scaled up to a 35' wingspan, or a Super Sportster bipe scaled up to a 20-25' span? Maybe a Dualist with a couple O360's, or maybe a a Hotts scaled up? Aerodynamically speaking, how would these things fly?

RE: Difficulty trimming for yaw with a CX2.
I'm not trouble shooting it anymore... I bought the damn thing BRAND NEW and I shouldn't have to do all this. If you bought a brand new car, how would you feel if you had to do an alignment and buy new tie rod ends and ball joints because the factory didn't get it right before they sold it to you?

RE: Difficulty trimming for yaw with a CX2.
Well, it flies a lot smoother now once I readjusted the tracking. However, it's still yawing to the right. So, off to the hobby shop with it tomorrow. It's brand new, has done it since day one, and I don't feel that I should have to buy "optional hop up" parts to correct something that should be fixed out of the box.

RE: Difficulty trimming for yaw with a CX2.
All right... so I decided to forego sleep and take a closer look... the blades are all balanced perfectly per Solo's method, the upper disc tracking is spot on, the voltages are equal, the motor spin downs are the same. Except... the upper bearing on the outer mast. Actually, the bearing is fine, it's the black plastic holder that's not. At first, I thought it was the inner mast that was bent, since it swings around quite a bit when both rotors are going slowly, but when I stopped the upper rotor, it still ocillated quite a bit. I pulled the inner mast out and spun up the outer mast and watched the upper bearing holder go 'round and 'round. I removed everything except the head from the upper mast and spun it on a counter top and it's not bent. The outer mast isn't bent because with the bearing holder removed, it spins true. Soooo... tomorrow during lunch, I'll go pick and aluminum bearing holder up at the LHS and see what happens.

RE: Difficulty trimming for yaw with a CX2.
Thanks for the tips! I haven't had a chance to play with it a whole lot; nine hours of work and then four hours of flight school, five days a week takes a toll... I'll have a chance this weekend and will post my results. If I can't get it dialed in, I'll just return it to the LHS. I suppose that'd be the easy fix, but if I wanted easy, I would have gotten a plane. :)

RE: Difficulty trimming for yaw with a CX2.
Hi Nick, the helicopter is new, and the guy at the LHS trimmed it for me before I walked out, however, upon flying it at home, it required quite a bit of trim in every direction. Something I forgot to mention- the yaw trim on the tx does make a difference; if I go full left or right with it, I notice a change, but still not enough to compensate.

Difficulty trimming for yaw with a CX2.
OK, so I'm not one to just go post on a board about a problem, as evidenced by my post per day count here, but this is just flat out driving me nuts... I can't get the damn thing to trim out in the yaw axis. I followed the directions in the manual as well as Solo's Wikifaq: http://www.heli-wiki.com/mediawiki/index.php/HOWTO_Wiki_Overall_CX_and_CX2_Setup And it continuously yaws to the right. I've played with the mixer, put new rotor blades on it, balanced everything, and have rebound the tx and rx several times. Nothing. Nothing changes, not even when I turn the mixer full counterclockwise or clockwise; it's the same thing all the time. While I fly, I have to constantly feed in left yaw, which I guess is suppose to simulate having to keep a foot on the left anti torque pedal in the real thing? But I thought these things were hands off, set the transmitter down and marvel at the stability? Also, I find that some times it'll yaw right even with full left stick and will only come left after I bring the stick back to neutral, let it spin around to the right a bit and then feed in some left stick. Everything else is fine- no bent shafts or flybar, cyclic roll and pitch respond and trim out fine, and the gyro works as it should. I've done everything I can think short of trimming a bit off the top blades to reduce torque going to them even more. Do I have a dud, or is this a common problem to which I'm overlooking the solution?

RE: An Engineer's Point Of View....
I'm going to ramble all over the place, but pay attention. Since you're new to RC, 85 KPH isn't that fast, as previously stated. From what I've read, an HPI 18SS will do that out of the box. Now, 160+ KPH is fast. Slab sides. I'm assuming you mean something like the old Lola cars. They really aren't all that bad, because they add directional stability. At "supercar" speeds, you're going to need it. Trust me. Splitter and diffuser... Go for it. I've screwed with it, and it helps, but there is such a small ammount of air getting under the car to begin with (3- 5mm clearance at a stand still and around 2-3 at speed), it's almost a non- issue. Big wing in the back. Yes, it makes a lot of drag, but it also makes a lot of downforce. At "supercar" speeds, you're going to need. Trust me. Here's some hints for you, from one aerodynamacist to another... keep the air on top of the car from spilling over the sides. Reduce the leading edge frontal area as much as possible. Cover the wheel wells. Keep the rear open. People have already hit 160+ KPH with existing production bodies without any undertray aerodynamics, and as I'm sure you know, to square the speed, you have to cube the power, so drag is an exponential factor. Your efforts to reduce drag will give you diminishing returns as speed increases, and don't forget about reynolds numbers.

Two really simple RS4 2 questions.
I have one of these things from about six years ago and recently became interested in it again. I have an old gold head CV12 Hyper in there, but it's seen better days, and I'm thinking about an .18 TZ. My two questions are... road debris aside, how long can I expect the belts to live for with that much power? Also, I'm totally lost with this SG crank thing and have no idea what to do for a flywheel, clutch, and two speed clutch bell. Thanks for your input! :)

RE: 1/2A sized Giles G-202.
It's an OS FS-26, and I have HS65 servos in there. I have a 4 oz. tank, but may try a 2 oz. tank if it turns out to be too heavy with a full load of fuel (or just not fill the tank up all the way). As for the battery... I could use a smaller one, but it's what I have, and it helps balance out the plane. I'll still need tail weight, but nowhere near the 4 oz. like mentioned above. I'm not taking this whole thing too seriously, so spending money on a small battery pack doesn't interest me a whole lot. :)

RE: Cedar Hobbies has a B-52 coming soon.
ORIGINAL: mugenkidd I think its close enough so that if you really want to scale it out you can,
Considering that it would take a major redesign to "scale it out," I think I'd rather scratch build it. The gear and doors (at least how they're shown on that version, are as close enough to the real thing as a P-51 is "close enough" to being an F-16.
but one has to remeber that the closer you get to exact scale the harder it is to design (more $$$) and usually the more of a pain it is too keep it going reliably.
No doubt, but it's not even at the flying stage at this point, and given the fact that Cedar enjoys the hell out of their laser cutter (lookit all the holes), I don't see what'd be so hard to change things up a bit at this point. In all honesty, the full scale function isn't any more complex than your standard rotating gear. I believe the gear on an F-18 are more complex.
As long as the gear closes up and the profile looks good in the air I think you can keep most people happy. And there's still enough room for improvement for the "exact scale" enthusist. Just hope it looks better than that B-17.. which so far it does.
Who knows what the final price will be, but if I'm going to hand $500+ for a BUFF, I'd like a MAJOR detail to be at least somewhat close. :)

They always flew great, were fast, and were very manuverable.

RE: Making planes graphically larger and loss of control in RFG3.
Well, I understand the strenth issue, and I'm not changing the physics size... just the graphics representation. It's on the main menu once you open the edit window, where it shows the scale in %. The wireframe is still the same size, the models still "weigh" the same as their normal size, and on the occasion that I can get them off the ground, they don't break apart in the air. I have also tried increasing the physical strength to 1500, and that still doesn't cure the problem- jumping around while sitting on the ground. They only break when they jump upwards of 30' straight up and come down and break the gear or a tail feather. Why would it have been smarter for the public not to have the enlarging function?

Making planes graphically larger and loss of control in RFG3.
The results vary from plane to plane, but when I make a plane larger, say, by 500%, so it's around a 35' span (just graphically, physics- wise, it's still "stock"), the plane jumps around on the ground like it's, for lack of a better term, on hydros. It'll jump and bounce and then break and fly off into the distance. I have a 3.4Ghz P4 processor and 3GB of RAM. I forget what video card I have, but it does the same thing on a friends laptop with a completely different hardware setup. Another issue is on the turbine jets, if I give them upwards of 80 lbs. of thrust, they go VERY fast for about half a second, and then the model just shuts off- the turbine quits, and I have no flight controls. It's not out of range, because I have that feature turned off, and it's only 1000' or so away from me when this happens. If I'm very careful with the throttle, it'll fly fine, but once I advance it past a certain point, the model will rapidly accellerate, and then everything on the plane- flight controls and engine- go dead, and the model just slowly floats to the ground as if in a flat spin, acting like the aero surfaces aren't affected by wind at all. These are two minor annoyances in what is otherwise a fantastic flight sim. The last RC simulator I had was the OLD Dave Brown simulator from the early '90's that ran in DOS on my 286 Kaypro. :)
