RE: Zenoah G62 electronic ignition conversion???!
Afterburner, I have a G-62 that was a magneto and was near impossible to start, even with help from experienced warbird guys. I used the RC excel conversion and now it starts easily. Highly recommended. David

RE: A123 Question
Question: how many years do you expect to get out of your A123s? Or LiFEs? I have Li Ions on a 110 inch EF yak and a 55cc Aeroworks extra, Li Ions are 2-3 years old and am thinking of switching to the A123s. Extra battery cost and cost of new charger (if the Hitec X4 is not up to task) would be justified if the A123s last more than a couple of years. Might also switch other gassers and a couple of glow planes over to lifes (from NiMH) over time. Will need some ignition regulators, what do you guys use? Thanks for the info in this thread, helps a lot. David

RE: That nasty AT-6 Bounce
I have been flying a Ziroli AT-6 for the last year. I have had a lot of problems with bounces on landing, esp in windy conditions. I didnt build this plane and have moved the CG forwards a lot since it was almost unflyable in the original condition. This winter I will modify the flaps, they are only good for about 15 degrees so I have to cut back some wood to allow more travel. Thanks for everyones suggestions in this thread, helps a lot.

RE: Mintor 33cc versus DLE 35 for B 25
ORIGINAL: acerc I am currently running a few DLE's and have no problem with their ignition. As a matter of fact I have a DLE ignition on a RCGF as well. My advice is to try the OEM before abandoning the wagon. By the way, with the rear exhaust you don't need to by an aftermarket muffler if the engine's are to be mounted head down. The exhaust will point straight down in that position. If you want it quieter take a piece of steel wool half the size of the canister and stuff in it. Work's great for me.
Just saw this post. I can see what the noise level is with stock mufflers (with and without the steel wool trick or the "silencers" they sell) and get the aftermarket muffler only if I need it. I dont even know if they have any aftermarket mufflers for the DLE 35 yet, but I am in no hurry. I also saw that you can wrap the exhaust pipe in rubber hose, according to the AMA website. Thanks for the tip on the stock ignition, I plan on running the engines in on a test mule so I can see how they go there.

RE: Mintor 33cc versus DLE 35 for B 25
Truckracer, the Ziroli guy told me the DLE ignitions were not true RCexl ignitions but were made under licence and that they have seen some problems with them. First I had heard it, but thats what he said. I have had an ignition fail in a DLE 55 for what thats worth. I agree on the DLE spark plug, I never use them. Ace, will check out the RCGF more. I think its side exhaust so DLE 35 might be better in this regard.

RE: Mintor 33cc versus DLE 35 for B 25
Thanks, ace. The rear carb looks like it might be the best solution, maybe get RCexl ignitions for it as per Ziroli's suggestion. Would have more power than I would need. At $350 each plus aftermarket muffler plus replacement ignitions, DLE is not the budget choice but may be the best. I was intrigued by the rotomotor 35 4 stroke, would sound cool but they weigh a ton and are $775 each from TBM.

Mintor 33cc versus DLE 35 for B 25
I am about to start building a 101 inch Ziroli B-25. Original recommended engine is/was the Zenoah G-23 (now G-26) magneto but it weighs so much I wanted to look at some electronic ignition options. Also needs a $100 pitts muffler on each side which might be a tight fit. I know you need the weight in warbirds, but in the B 25 the nose is so much further forwards I will have a lighter plane if I add weight to the nose instead of having heavy engines. The G26 EI version is still pretty heavy. I talked to Ziroli and they said anything that fit in the cowl would work, though he said the stock ignition in DLE was not great and should be replaced with and RCexl. Three lighter engines I was looking at: Mintor 33 http://www.topdawgaviation.com/Engines/mintor/33cc/33cc.php Has a good quality stock muffler but side exhaust. Need to try to find dimensions to make sure it fits in the cowl. DLE 35 rear exhaust. Might be easier to fit in the cowl. Syssa 30. From the syssa thread it sounds like they might be a bit loud. I am not looking for screaming performance here, mainly reliability, quiet and easy starting (in that order). Noise restriction at my field is 91dB at 25 feet. I was planning a 3 blade prop. I can find very little info on the Mintor. Anyone have any opinions or experience with these engines? Thanks, David

RE: DLE-111 dies at full throttle- HELP!!
I spoke too soon about this engine fix. The engine runs but does not have the power is used to have. I tested and got 16 Kg static thrust on a 28/10. This engine should give 25.5Kg. I changed the timing and seemed to improve a bit (up to 20Kg) but when I flew it the power was worse. The plane flies but its no fun. I have given up. I would like to try the DA 120 but I dont want to buy a new exhaust system.

Most people could teach themselves pretty easily with a combination of a flight simulator and something really forgiving to start with, like the Parkzone Radian. But if you have the cash and a week free and Dave has a slot available, it would be the fastest way to solo. You are right about Shawano, there is pretty much nothing there. The local flying club, if you join for the week, has a beautiful field just south of the town. Daves school is about 20 min west of town.

RE: 1st U.S. RC Flight School
ORIGINAL: helisrock Hey guys, I don't know if this question really belongs here but I am going to ask it anyway. I am thinking about doing the 1st U.S. Flight School based in Shawano, WI. I am wondering if anyone has done this flight school, and if they give you a free plane at the end of it or anything like that. The cost is 650.00 for a week of flying. I didn't think that was bad, especially if you get some free stuff. Any thoughts of your experience at this flight school or any other one would be very helpful! Was it helpful/worth the money? etc. Thanks, Travis
I have attended the US RC flight school. I did the course for people who could already fly, I have not done the beginners course. Overall, it was OK, my class size was small and you get a fair amount of flying done (though class size is larger in beginners). Unfortunately there arent a lot of people teaching RC formally out there and I can say I definitely did learn some things during the week. The class is precision aerobatics, no 3D. Downsides: my impression is that Dave thinks there are 2 ways to do things, his way and the wrong way, so he wont be OK with you doing things your way (example: some of the best RC pilots out there are thumb flyers, but he wont let you fly that way). There is also a lot of dead time in the afternoon and evening if you are staying in a hotel up there, and there is nothing to do in Shawano. You can pay to join the local RC flying club if you bring your own plane. Dave will not let you fly at his field after class finishes. At the end of the class he offers a flight school T shirt from a box, which seems to be a graduation gift, but if you pick up a shirt he then tells you that you have to pay him for it. Bottom line: worth going to if you live in the Shawano area but I wouldnt travel a long distance to get there unless you cant get any help at all where you live. Add the course cost to hotel and travel costs and it becomes an expensive proposition. Travis, feel free to PM me if you have questions.

I fessed up to charging overnight in the garage (lipos in a closed ammo can with slits for the wires) but dont think I will do that again. I usually am not present all the time during charging. I am a bit freaked out by some of the stuff I have read lately and am going to isolate the batteries better (ceramic pots covered by sand bags, maybe a ventilated metal box to enclose the charger plus lipos, smoke detector by lipos). Have never had a problem but dont want to temp fate either.

Lopflyers, great thread. I am also a doc and have been in the hobby around 4 years. Wish I had started long ago. There is a huge amount to know about so many different aspects of the hobby. Thats one of the things that makes it so interesting. I have learned a lot about things that are handy outside of the hobby- soldering, gas engines, electronics, battery technology, the list goes on. If this were all simple I would have been bored by now. Am currently contemplating building a Ziroli B 25, which will be about a 2 year project. I expect to learn a lot in that process as well.

RE: Are all RC forum's activity in decline?
ORIGINAL: GruntboyX How about a redesign? This forum hasn't changed in years. Maybe people are leaving because it looks abandoned. My personal pieve is the super threads. Once a thread become larger than 10 pages it's time to dedicate a sub forum to it. This is bad at both rcu and rcg. It's especially evident in the radios section and the builders area. Then being new you ask a simple question and some grumpy guy rages on you for not reading the 1000+ post thread. I would also suggest better search. It gets difficult to find valuable info. Especially when your wading through the super threads. I think that would help. Also, how about some fresh content? It would drive discussion.
When I started flying a few years back I used the reviews section to decide what planes to buy and it was incredibly helpful. More recently I wanted to post reviews of some of my planes (Addiction X, several Extreme Flight planes, Sebart Mig 29 etc) and they are not listed. I tried to start a thread on why it looks like no planes have been added to the review section for a few years and the Moderator responded with something like "keep complaining and perhaps the site owners will take notice". OK, if the moderator is not going to do anything, who else can? I understand how when something is new, people are excited and put in a lot of effort. As this site has aged, people, especially the site owners, dont seem as interested in keeping it up to date. It really looks stale, like the owners are letting it sit and not putting anything into it. Maybe the ad revenue doesnt justify trying to make the site better? It looks like 100% of the effort is provided by the subscribers and the moderators. As gruntboy points out, the search function is not on par with other internet sites and some fresh content would be great. I would be more interested in RCU if it could be kept up to date and had less bugs. I will be sure to copy this text before trying to post it!

RE: Complain about anything place
You can rent a car, why cant you rent an RC plane? You would complete the paperwork over the internet, fax them your AMA card and credit card and promise not to fly it over the border into Canada or Mexico. Then the plane would autonomously fly to your field, land, taxi to the pits and shut itself off. When you get there, bind it to your Tx and fly it all you want. When you're done, fill it with fuel and it flies itself back to the RC plane rental lot. They do a close inspection for any scratches or dings that werent there before and you get your deposit back. Rentals would be $10 a day for a 30% plane, unlimited nautical miles, plus $85 a day insurance, surcharges and local taxes. If you crash, they send out a 700 class heli to pick up the wreckage. Why dont we have this service on offer already, how hard could it really be?

RE: DLE-111 dies at full throttle- HELP!!
AND THE ANSWER IS.............. I ran out of things to look at myself so I pulled the engine off the plane and sent it to Valley View, which I probably should have done all along. They found there was so much carbon inside the cylinders that one of the pistons was sticking. It was easier for them the replace the pistons and rings than clean them. They said it now runs great and is on its way back to me. About $130 plus shipping. I was using Pennzoil air cooled at 35:1, he recommended Stihl Ultra at 40: 1 for a broken in engine so thats what I will use from now on. I cant speak highly enough about Valley View, they will be getting more of my business from now on. And I didnt even buy my engine from them. Thanks to everyone who helped with suggestions in this thread.

Question for Ron and others- the halon extinguishers seem relatively expensive and are not so great for the environment, totally banned in some countries. Are there other extinguisers you would recommend? (I do not fly turbines). Preferably one that would not soak the plane in fluid or foam. I read a little about the different types but it was not clear to me which ones could be used on Lipo fires and which ones would leave your plane intact.

I would not buy a used engine on RCU. I once bought a Hanger 9 Pawnee on RCU with a used Saito 82 in it. I met the guy for the purchase and had him start the engine but did not tach it. Turned out it would not develop adequate RPM due to a messed up carb that cost me $100 to get fixed. The guy who sold me the plane had bought the engine at a swap meet. I had already given positive feedback to the seller well before I realized the problem.

RE: Disappointed in RC Advancement Over Last 20 Years
As others have suggested, the answer to "on your six"s original question is : Volume Production. If every single adult in the US flew RC, you would be able to buy an Aeroworks 50cc plane ready to fly for less than we pay for the airframe, and it would be stronger, lighter and more reliable. And probably 4 stroke fuel injected with full telemetry. I think the original poster poses a reasonable question, there has not been as rapid development of technology as in lots of other areas, like computers, cars etc. But for the volume of RC stuff produced, we are doing pretty well.
