RE: NOTAM from Hell
Presidential travel can be a pain. But so can thier vacations. Bush spent 490 days at the Crawford ranch while he was president. The only problem is that the TFR around the ranch interferred with DFW arrivals coming in over Glen Rose( JEN) . Guess who had the honor of rerouting thousands of aircarft around the ranch. Yours truly. At least your problem will not last 490 days. So be glad it wasn't worse.

RE: Flying wing gliding in high winds
You need more than a waiver to fly above FL180. You need a transponder.

RE: Canopy Question
Use RC560 canopy glue. That stuff is amazingly strong. It looks like Elmers, just white and milky. But man it works great. However, you must scuff the parts with some sand paper or a nail file to give them "tooth". If you try to glue it to plain Monokote, it will come off. You must either remove a 1/8" strip of covering and glue the canopy directly to the wood OR scuff up the Monokote also. Its best to remove it. It takes overnight to dry, so you need plenty of tape to hold your canopy in place while it dries.

RE: Robart Pin Hinge Question
I keep a small tin of Burt's Bees Wax on the bench. It is sold as a lip balm, (I think). I just bend the hinge and dip the center in the Burt's Bees Wax, flip it over and do the other side. No glue, not even epozy, will stick to the hinge where the wax is.

RE: Answer please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I open the box and find my new ARF has wrinkles or air bubbles in the covering I first try to find out which brand of covering was used. Each brand has a slightly different recommended application temperature. So I adjust my iron to that temp. If you cannot determine the brand of covering, or it is a non-name brand, then start off at a lower temperature, (just to be safe). Slowly raise the temperature until you begin to get the results you want. I also take a "T" pin and sharpen it. I use this to make tiny holes in the covering over the air bubbles. Typically the bubbles are long and narrow. So I would prick the covering with my pin every 1/8 of an inch or so down the length of the bubble. This will allow the trapped air to escape so the covering can be tightened and the adhesive can stick to the wood.

RE: This should help bill requiring warrant for drones.
ORIGINAL: Sport_Pilot
My calender says that BOTH are law now, passed and signed. My calender says AMA limits FPV to LOS and flying beyond LOS then subjects you to 14.91.119(c) just as any other aircraft.
There is nothing in that law that says models or any type of RPV must comply with FAR part 81.  It says that the FAA must write regulations that incorporate the requirements of that law and implement them by September 2015.  Nothing in that law is required to be followed till that is done.
I would have to agree with you. But why was 14.91.119 introduced into the conversation (by KE) if it doesn't apply ? Please explain how any of this topic is related to the AMA ?

RE: This should help bill requiring warrant for drones.
ORIGINAL: KidEpoxy you need a calendar, check when NOW is, and when Someday-CBOs-Might-Get-Exemption is. 14.91.119(c) is NOW. Current US law. period
My calender says that BOTH are law now, passed and signed. My calender says AMA limits FPV to LOS and flying beyond LOS then subjects you to 14.91.119(c) just as any other aircraft. That is unless the AMA decides to allow beyond LOS FPV. And there seems to be discussion about expanding FPV. Have you changed your mind about the AMA CBO exemption? You were mighty gung ho about it only a few weeks ago. There are pages and pages of you insisting that the exemption is here and now. What has changed?

RE: This should help bill requiring warrant for drones.
ORIGINAL: KidEpoxy T A B, it would make it real interesting for AMA club pilots to hover over the runway if we kinda admit most times the hovering is being done within 500' of the cars in the parking lot or tailgating Pit row.
Presumably, at the (AMA) club , you would have CBO exemption. But when you fly FPV elsewhere, you would not. It seemed that you presented a case in which a court decided that hovering over a pot growers barn was a threat because the vehicle was too close, (closer than FAA guidlelines). Why wouldn't the same COURT keep me from hovering my FPV heli over the pot growers barn? IS too close for a manned vehicle the same as too close for an unmanned vehicle ? (not speaking about FAA's opinion of things or FAR's)

Would a private FPV model/drone also be considered a danger/threat for flying within 500' of people/structures ?

RE: Dave Platt T-28B Trojan 1/7 Scale 65-inch
One word of warning, the canopies tend to come out looking long and low. Combine that with the exagerated length of the fuselage and it really looks bad. Try to keep the canopy as high as you can. The Black Horse T28's canopy is actually slightly taller and might be preferable.

Quick and easy cowl baffles ? Anyone?
Generally the problem is that the air comes in and dives for the big hole in the bottom of the cowl before it ever passes over the engine. So the objective has always been to hold the airlfow up and force it to flow over the head. In the past, I have used card stock. Just trail and error and error and trial until the pattern fits, then transfer it to lite ply stock then CA it in place with baking soda or shreaded polyester fibers . Fuel proof and go. But , is there an easier way ?

RE: Are all RC forum's activity in decline?
I've already posted on this topic, (post #63), but I wanted to add this ; I come to RCU because it has the best, easiest, most user friendly classified ads of any of the forum sites. Head and shoulders above the rest. Keep that up and I believe RCU will always be a favorite of modellers.

RE: Are all RC forum's activity in decline?
For one thing, RCU isn't the only game in town anymore. RCU might be trending the same as other sites now, but a few years ago those sites did not exist. They must have sucked away traffic from RCU by thier very creation. Heck, HobbyKing has forums. Builders tend to communicate with other builders far more than other sub-groups of the hobby communicate about a single topic. They look for more advice, they have more problems to solve and they are involved with each project for a much longer time. There are now sites explicitly for builders. And there are fewer builders than ever. Personally, I initally enjoyed answering questions and helping new RC modellers. But after a while i noticed the same questions over and over. When I myself ran into a problem, (and I've been building models for 40 years, so its generally a pretty complex situation), I often recieved poor advice or unusable advice. I think many of us have had our computors for a long time now. We have learned what a time-suck they actually are and we have adjusted our behavior. The new has worn off . The format of RCU is good. I wouldn't change the look or the function, (other than to resolve the reliablity issue). The RC hobby has always ebbed and flowed, boomed and busted. When the economy is very good, people move up to more expensive toys , like speed boats, jetskis, or even real airplanes. And when economic times are bad people cut back and modelling becomes popular again. But when times are very very bad, they don't even fly models. Those are some of the causes why RCU traffic might be trending lower. Each adding to the others. The sum being rather significant

RE: Questionj regarding the folding propellers
Your ESC must have a "brake" or the prop will not fold back when the engine is shut off. Without the "brake" the prop will just windmill (and create drag).

RE: Dave Platt T-28B Trojan 1/7 Scale 65-inch
Here is one in Navy grey. I think the high visibility scheme , white with day-glow red, tends to amplify the poor proportions of this kit. The grey scheme tends to move the eye in such a matter as to minimize the poor proportions.

I paint the firewall with Grey Dope, then coat it with epoxy. Looks very clean, stays absolutely fuel proof for decades.

RE: What are these little fences for?
I'm going to take a guess and say this : This is a race plane. And deflecting control surfaces creates drag which might slow you ever so slightly. I guess these devices might cause the ailerons and elevator to work slightly more effeciently so that less deflection is required and therefore less speed is lost by deflecting them.

RE: How do you get that smooth finished look
The finish depends completely on the prep. Sand it all smooth, then use a finer grit paper. I go all the way to 400. And I use T bars on the wings to avoid high spots and low spots.

RE: Monokote over Monokote
I tape them off, scuff them up, then shoot them with Red Rustoleum, (which is one of the few fuel proof colors). I started 8 years ago when I built my Chipmunk, I didn't want all of those little red pieces coming up. 8 years old and still looks new. The Cap10 is brand new, hasn't yet flown.

RE: fuel consumption of saito FA-180.
My Saito 150 kept dying after 5 minutes. Then I realized the tank was empty. 17oz = 5 minutes, Geeze !!! But after more flights I leaned the idle screw, (which for some reason also affects the top end) and now I get about 11 minutes from that same 17oz tank. But that is still about 8 flights per gallon or $2.50 running YS20/20. They get better mileage in time. It just seems like they will eat you out of house and home at first.

RE: DOPE OVER FABIC COVERINGS
The Bonanza fuselage is covered with Sig Koverall and Sig Nitrate Dope. A couple of coats of dope with light sanding between coats to fill the weave, then rattle can primer, wet sand, then color. The dope is great, dries so fast you can cover the airplane and fill the weave in one afternoon. Let it vent out for a few days before you switch products.

RE: Goldberg Chipmunk ?
I have one with an OS 61FX but would prefer a new .75AX. I know someone with a 120 Saito on theirs. Our airplanes go about the same speed, but he has the vertical of a pattern ship. IF you already have the .82 and want to use it, then it will work, but you will be left wanting more. The Chiipy has a wide speed range and you can fly the "small" show stuff at low power easily. But if you want to fly the "big" show stuff then you want to go big engine. The airplane is a tank and can take a big engine. I think the Saito 115 would be perfect and mount the elevator servo in the tail.
