RE: This is Hilarious!
Many people have trie to make a trolling motor by putting a trolling motor prop on a weed eater. They spin to fast for the pitch and size of the prop. I am sure he had to cut the prop down so the motor could spin what is left of it without stalling. It was worth looking at for sure. JIM

Youe stuff loks good Justaddwata. It will be worth it in the end. A lot of people think that twnety bucks worth or resin and ten bucks worth of glass should not cost them much once it is made into a boat. All the time spent is what costs the big bucks. Youe layup looks very good, getting the bubbles out is the most important thing. Post pictures of the build. I did a posting of how to glass in stringers on modelpowerboat.com that came out fairly good. Good luck with your boat. JIM

RE: For all who want to make their own mold...
I should have been clearer, I just throw the nozzle and the part it screws into into the acetone. The rest of the gun can just be wiped off. You will never over heat a mold with poly making an RC boat. It is not nearly thick enough to build up much heat. When making a real boat you can ruin any mold if you lay it up to thick with poly or epoxy because they both make a lot of heat when laid on thick all at once. The ebay link is the same gun I have, it works well.

The spray gun is known as a "Dump gun" Do not try to spray gel coat with a paint gun. It will fail and you will throw the gun away. If you manage to thin the gel coat enough to get it through a paint gun you ruined the gel coat. These guns sell for about $145 up to $200 on the net. Search... of the gel coat it will lift the first layers and "Gator". Styrene can also be used to thin

RE: Return Of the Depth Charge
The bad thing about explosives is you only get to make one mistake. What will you do if some rigged up detonator does not fire? Leave it for some kid to find or have it blow your hand off trying to retreive it? They closely watch shipments of explosive components (chlorates, chlorites, aluminum powder, Nitric and sulferic acid, touline, mercury, glycerine, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, sulfer, smokeless and black powders, nitro methane, ether etc....) and other cool stuff you used to be able to use for your own "cherry bombs". Post 911 changed all of this and besides getting hurt you could end up in club fed. If you persist in doing this use only commercially made waterproof fuse. Never make your own fuse. Be aware of static sparks, have a ground strap hooked to your person to prevent sparks when making your toys. Never get any of your "mixtures" on the threads of any cap or top or it can go off as you screw it together. Better yet, don't do it.

RE: For all who want to make their own mold...
Justaddwata, the link is for the thread where the mold was made, from the plug to the picture shown. It is fairly long so transferring it was not a good idea. I should have the boat out of the mold this weekend and use it's final size to make the plug for the top mold. With the thread another beginner such as myself should be able to start with their own plug and end up with a useable mold. I have been building parts in fiberglass for about two years now and just started making molds a few months ago. The plug The plug with flange being glued on BIG mistake, I should have used surfacing primer instead of the paint shown. I was told the surfacing primer is a standard plug finish, well sanded and waxed. the paint stuck in the mold and ruined the plug. I am going to glue different strakes to a completed hull to see where and how many would be good to have then pull a new mold with the strakes added to a plug pulled from the mold. This way they are based on tests and not a gues on where they should be or how big to make them etc.. A hull of this length should have a lot of lift anyway. JIM

RE: hatch
I use a fine tooth blade in a jig saw to cut the opening in a new deck that has not had the opening cut yet and to cut off a flange. the final shape can be done with the drum sander on a dremel or a palm sander. I prefer the palm sander for keeping straight section straight and the dum sander on the dremel for fine work and inside radius corners. Even the drum sander can cut a lot very fast so take it slow, it is hard to put it back on once it is sanded off. JIM

Doug, when I am done with the mold I have a friend who will build the hull into a fully running boat and get it on the water. It is just taking a few weeks longer than I thought to make the mold set between my real job and other orders for stuff that people pay me to make. The boat does not look to narrow for it's length as I look is it live and in person. I don't know how to mount

For sure new hull time. It would take about 4 x longer to fix it than to make an entire new one in the molds. The labor cost is much more than the materials in an RC boat.

RE: UPS LIKES TO CRUSH GAS BOATS
Tamiyacking, About UPS not throwing boxes.. A good friend of mine was hired at the UPS hub in Daytona Beach several years ago to pack trucks (and wash them) during the Christmas season. His supervisor was training him and picked up a small box marked as Fragile. The trainer drop kicked it into the truck and said to be carefull with the boxes marked fragile. He repeated this with several boxes, kicking them all around. He then told my friend how a box of oranges broke open and an employee ate one. They had him arrested for theft. They made sure he knew that they were serious about theft but could care less about breaking your stuff. It all starts at the top in any company and if the employees are given this as an example from day one there is no hope for the business' customer's packages. My friend had no reason to lie to me about this as it was his first day on the job and the pay was better than anything he could find at the time. I hope they are all not all like this but based on what they broke belonging to me in the last two months they must be. How else can you explain their breaking the very well protected carb off of a Stihl 660 magnum chainsaw? Also a metal lathe in a solid plywood box? They snapped two custom made walnut gunstocks shipped by AAA gun shop in DeLand several years ago. How can you break them? They must have run the truck over them or speared the box with a fork lift. Bottom line is they suck and dont take any pride in their work then give you S--- when you want them to make good on what they tore up. It's always the same excuse, "You should have packed it better" . This may be the case sometimes but all of the above items are very hard to break even if you try to.... JIM

RE: An Ocean-worthy vessel
I live on the east coast of Florida. I have never seen an RC boat that could run here unless you are talking about in bays and other protected areas. The open ocean at the beach would pile up my 16' boat with a 50 hp on it in seconds if I strayed that close to shore after going out through an inlet. Good luck, I would love to see a video of it but it would not last long unless you have a bunch of power to move it between wave crashings. JIM

RE: Jet drive pump *HOMEMADE* Thread
Cool project. One way to mount your impeller pattern on a shaft is to mount your pattern on a shaft of the same size. After you ram up the mold it leaves the perfect size impression in the mold for the placement of your shaft. Close the mold on a shaft and it is ready for the pour. If you get short pours on the thin areas of the casting use a bigger sprue and riser and more vents if using green

RE: UPS LIKES TO CRUSH GAS BOATS
UPS SUCKS! They smashed a Sthil MS660 Magnum chain saw I shipped double boxed. This is the second biggest chain saw Stihl makes. They ripped the top cover off the engine and ripped out the carb. They HAD to do this on purpose. You could have dropp kicked it out of the big brown truck at 100 mph and could not have hurt it. I shipped a lathe last month in a plywood crate, bolted through the plywood and into a 1 x 4. UPS smashed it also and broke two gears and the gear cover. I ship all of the boats I make USPS in a normal box with very little foam and they have not broken one yet. JIM

RE: Epoxy temperature
A post cure heating can add a lot of strength but it is not the sort of thing you can do well in an oven. Your best bet would be to vacuum bag it and shine a light on it while it cures so that it gets warm but not to hot.The vacuum bag will keep out any bubbles. A friend of mine made a rigged up oven (A big one) out of the silver foil sided fiberglass insulation panels and hung a row of heat lamps in it. He puts his part in the oven, pulls a vacuum and heats it to 140 while it kicks. He makes carbon whale tails and fender flares for Porsche 914 and 911's. I have made up little vacuum bagging rigs with zip lock bags and some scrap peel ply and breather bag. I used a light bulb in a reflector housing to speed up the cure because I did not want to wait for the part. You can get a free vacuum pump out of most any refrigerator or AC unit if the compressor is still good. It sucks in one side and blows out the other. Just hook up your hose to the "in" side and you are good to go. The blue masking tape seals it fairly well. JIM

For future projects mix microbaloons in your top coat of resin and it will be much easier to sand smooth. 1 brush on a thin coat of resin to seal the wood and keep it from sucking the resin out of the glass, let kick but does not have to be hard before going to step 2. 2 Apply glass and wet out just enough to make it all clear but don't try and fill the weave. 3 Apply microbaloon resin mix
