RE: 2 cycle engines for F3A
The Os140 is å splendid engine - but as stated in earlier posts, not really suited for the FAI program. You'll need an "older" airframe (say Synergy/Oxalys) to get enough ooompf. It is simply not powerful enough for the newer designs! Also, if you are trying the 140, go for a dual plug top (Mintor or similar) using an os#5 & F-plug. Use the APC 18x10 sport prop (the odd one w/huge hub!). I've used this combo in my planes before converting to YS.

RE: Current drain using YS170CDi?
Thank you for the reassuring answers! I'm flying F3A P-13, using a stnd Hyde-mount. I was hoping for a bit less Amp-drain given the smoother running CDi-engine. I've got counter-weights on the ailerons, but I'm guessing the speed etc of the servos require a fair share. Just found the Graupner LiFe 1600mAh RX-battery weighing the same as the 1100 and similar dim's - Now ordered! http://www.graupner.de/en/products/022dd0c7-d03b-41bb-9990-4ccd837668cc/7688.2/product.aspx I'm setting up my new model, so I'll pop in a 1600-battery there! Same engine, same servos...

Current drain using YS170CDi?
Hello, I've just converted my Oxalys to 170CDi power.. After a near miss earlier this summer, I've been more aware of the current drain of each flight! On my Oxalys, I've had a few different set-ups regarding engine/servos. Currently I'm using JR DS8355 for ailerons/rudder/elevator and a small JR Digi on throttle. I've connected the CDi-unit directly into the RX through a digi-switch. RX-battery is a Graupner LiFe 1100mAh. Last time I was out testing, I had 3 flights of approx.8min each. This drained a total of approx.800mAh from the battery! (I charged 800mAh after flying). I thought this was a bit "scary", and a real wake-up call!.. But the major question is: Is it normal? (Using approx.270mAh/flight). If so, I'll have to invest i a slightly larger RX-battery... (Yes, I know electro is using less than 100mAh/flight, but I'm not there yet!). As a comparison, using JR DS8401-servos and YS170, I avaraged 110mAh/fligth. Any thoughts?

RE: New Biplane by Bryan Hebert - Alferma
Really love this Bipe! It was great to finally see some footage of the model in flight. Looks awsome! I can't wait for this model to be available to us "Novice" pattern-folks... I'm looking for a substitute for my trusty ZN Suxess, and the Alferma looks like a great oportunity to update! Has the model been tested in windy conditions yet? The Suxess, being an older design, really struggles in windy conditions, hence it is not my first weapon of choice for the F3A schedule. Also, it has some wierd couplings (a lot of throttle - aileron mix(...), plenty aileron to rudder mix etc etc). I'm guessing a "new generation" bipe has shaken off most of these "bad habits"? Audun

RE: RX packs ?
Try these guys: http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/ - Great service and great prices. Do consider the "shelf life" (or self discharge) if choosing NiMh cells. I'm currently using a Graupner 2S LiFe (6,6V) 1100 pack ( http://www.graupner.de/en/products/c468bd8c-444e-465c-96e9-7cc3b151f4a0/7677.2/product.aspx ) with a Jaccio 5,8V regulator. Gives me low "self de-charging" and great capacity along with ok weight (83g). Don't really like LiPo's with respect to charging etc, but I guess I'm just "old-fashioned"!

RE: Should weight and 2Meter rule be modified in F3A?
Just a suggestion; 5,5kg Take-off weight (i.e. with fuel / batteries). A full tank of fuel weighs approx.5-600g(ish..), so I think this would be one way of evening out thr IC - el. differences.

RE: Anyone dealt with this company before?
ORIGINAL: bjr_93tz The thing that caught my eye was being able to buy just the pump body for 16.2 Euro and 4 Euro for the plunger. I know mine is worn and I'd like to give a new pump body a go before shelling out $150AUD for a whole new 170 pump. I'll give YS another week, then might send this bunch an e-mail and see what happens.
Just a small warning... I have 5 Ys engines (160&170), with 4 different pump-configurations! I bought a pump body a while ago, and it does not fit any of the worn bodies... The plungers have slight differences as well. Hopefully, the new pumps are more standarized.

RE: Glow or Electric
Well, here's my 2 cents.. I love the way the YS performs, sounds, smells and handles. I've been flying IC since I started in this hobby, and I think I'll always own a couple of IC-engines! There is some maintenence involved, but not too much. (Having said that, I do have an Ys160 that for some obscure reason just won't last through the P-11 schedule... It now sits nicely on a shelf, awaiting further investigations. But still, these are some really nice engines!) My latest build, still to be completed, is fitted with an Ys170. Why? Well... After some years of using YS-engines, I have 4 of these jewles. I also have approx.100L of Methanol, 30L Nitro and loads of oil.. The question was then; Do I want to invest BIG $$ on converting to electrics now, or do I want to use the engines and fuel I already have? That is the sole reason for me chosing IC on my latest build. If I was to buy everything new anyways, I would absolutely go electric!! Many of my fellow F3A-pilots fly electric, and the amount of power, braking etc is awsome... Only minor "hickup" is the charging, but that seems to be OK as well. So, if you are buying everything "from scratch", I would not hesitate one second - choose EL-power. But I would invest an extra $ on the equipment and buy from the top shelf.. Usually, one gets what one pays for.. I would have to reconsider if a 2-cycle powerhouse similar to the 140RX came on the market that could perform on the same level as the Ys170/Pletty/axi etc!

YS 160/170 pump question
Being rather new to the world of YS, I've had a few trial and error approaches at working on these wonderful machines. I have totally disassembled and assembled the engines a few times due to different miss-haps, and now the time has come to overhaul the pumps. Both on the 160's and 170's. And there were a few differences! I have a quite basic question; How has the pump-assembly changed over time, and what is the latest version? Also, how do I know which spares fit which pump? Having this post in mind; http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9001464/anchors_9179871/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9179871 - All my pumps but one* has this problem. (* One 170 pump has the pump valve groove on the oposite side) I only discovered the differences in the pumps when taking them all apart at the same time, having bought some spare parts I hoped would fit (pump body and pump plate)... The differences were; - Pump valve groove on the oposite side of the pump plate/pump body (having black pump valves instead of white) - Different pump valve springs (stiffer and shorter) - Diameter and shape of the plunger (apperently same pump bodies, but different plungers!) In the "old" 160 manual, the pump assy is called F2147A. In the newer part lists, it is called F8048A. I was unable to use some of the spares I had, and I'm just wondering if I have to buy 3 new pumps...? (Cheaper than making the steel inserts in the body and plate). I'm greatful for any answers here...

RE: Pattern guys are smart; what starter do you use?
I've used it for approx.3years now without any problems. I too was a bit worried, but loved the size, so I gave it a go. Easily starts my YS170's and 160's... It did have some issues with an old Os BGX-1, but it turned that engine as well.. Mind you, I'm using 12cells NiCd (sorry for the mistake in the last post..).

RE: Pattern guys are smart; what starter do you use?
I use an old JP starter. Seems they have renewed it a bit since I bought it, but you get the idea; http://www.jperkinsdistribution.co.uk/detail.php?JPNO=4444320&activepage=1&Navmain=Field%20equipment&subcatname=Starters (Actually, the local RC shop had one in as a faulty order... Luckily I snatched it before it got sent back!) Very cheap, reliable, STRONG, small and light. I have attached a 10cell NiCd pack. Guess it works great on Hobbycity LiPo as well...

RE: Cam gear bearing change - Help!
Well... Bought the engine 2nd hand, and it was full of rust and some sticky, greasy brown stuff.... The cam bearings had some rust on them, and did not run smoothly - hence the change! (Your'e right, I have never changed these bearings on any of my other YS's..).

Cam gear bearing change - Help!
I'm doing a total service on a Ys170, changing more or less all all there is to change! (Wtihin reasonable spare-parts costs of course!) The crankcase is now emptied except for the cam gear bearing. How on earth do I get it out! I've tried heating the crankcase to 200deg.C and whacked it on a wooden board until my wife came in and wondered who I was killing.. This method works fine on the inner crankshaft bearing, but not here.. The same goes for the cam gear cover.. Bearings just seem to be welded stuck or something.. Is there a tool, or a magic touch you all use to remove these bearings? Please let me in on the secret! The new bearings are screeming to be used!

RE: Radio South HD springs
I had these springs in my 9Z, and the first thing I did when I recieved my 14MZ was to toss the original springs and install the HD... They can be a bit of a hazzle to install, but take your time and it'll work fine. Good point regarding the loops. I found they fitted one way, not the other.. (Check for "grinding" before you assemble the TX!). You might want to bend them slightly to make them fit perfectly. One tip I found out the hard way.. Hold the TX upside down whenever there are no springs on the gimballs... The tiny spring adjuster tends to fall down into the TX otherwise! On the 9Z, I tried the Futaba heavy duty springs. These were no stiffer than the original ones. I had to adjust the RS springs to approx half strength for the "perfect feel"... Too stiff, and you'll get a thumb cramp pretty quick!
