RE: Battle Axe Open B
Glad to have another Coloradoan back in the hunt! I too have taken a couple years off but in the process of getting the hangar full again. Don't worry about flying a 60" bird compared to a 64-68" model. It's not gunna be a handicap. Get the engines/radios dialed in for dependability and get ready to rumble!

RE: 29% Katana-S ARF---Aeroworks!!!
Does anyone have a pic of their rudder pull-pull setup? Are there any pics buried somewhere in this thread that I missed? I'm trying to figure where to exit the wires without having to cut out and repatch the whole lower third of the plane so I can have a solid area to run the wires through.

HS 5997TG question
I recently ordered a few HS 5997TG's for a 29% Katana I'm putting together and what I recieved were HSC-5997 TG's. Can I use these in an airplane since these are designated as car servos? Whats the difference anyway?

RE: Tactics
There are two basic tactics. Just about every round starts out as a "furball". This sounds like what you have described. Call them targets of opportunity, or just plain lucky snags, but when 10 planes are up all with full streamers looping in the middle of the "ball" can score a couple quick cuts. Once the targets decline to only a few streamers (or a couple planes carry the lions share of streamers) it's time to get down to business with the real tactic of pursuit. Pick a target and chase it down hard. Anticipate your opponents moves and don't let them shake you. Many pilots have bad poker faces and repeat the same move over and over again to evade pursuit. The best have so many moves, they are almost impossible to anticipate, but they also MUST stay in the engagement area so they have to change direction some time. Practice matching speed with your target too. If you are alot faster than the target you'll over fly them too quickly and lose out on cuts.

Looking for 6+" vintage wheels
I'm in the process of putting together a BalsaUSA 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup. Just found out that Williams Bros went out of business and I need to find a source for 6 5/8 (or close to it) vintage wheels for it. Does anyone know of anyone who sells spoke or solid wheels?

RE: plyon size engine .15?
I bought a .15 sized AJ-2 from Kevin Matney a couple years back. Give him a try at www.matneymodels.com (I'm pretty sure thats the address). I'll finally be putting mine together now that I found the ultimate engine for it...an Irvine XR .15 FIRE. Out of the box with an APC 7x4...20 grand!

super tiger problem.
I have a ST 75 with a tuned pipe that eventually developed possibly similar problems. Originally I was running 15% in it and it would idle great but would surge at anything above 1/2 throttle. I changed to 5% and the problem went away. The other day I had my Ultra Stick 60 out (with the piped 75) and forgot my 5%. Put 15% in it again and the surging returned. Would run well enough to get it in the air and then start surging and finally deadsticking and HOT! Have you tried MUCH lower nitro?

Ultimate Biplane
Had to jump in on this thread. I finally got my CG Ultimate ARF together and flown a few times. WOW! What a delight! If you have a full size pick-up, the plane will fit in and under a cover fully assembled...at least it does in my F-150 flareside. This is such a fun plane to fly (and bring out to the field and get lots of great comments). It has no bad habits, flys like on rails, handles crosswinds well (which suprised me) and lands almost like a trainer...honest!

oleo struts for Modeltech P-47 60 size
I have one on the way and would like to hear from anyone who has used the supplied mechanical retracts and added oleo struts. Thinking about Robart 380 series robostruts but they are rumored to be a little weak. I will be flying off paved runways only. I want to keep the weight (and the pricetag) down so an air system is out of the question right now.

I've used the FMA extreme 5 (and the tetra 5 channel) with great results. I will be running them in my Q500 and Q40's exclusively this season. Many folks run the Hitec 555 with great results but I found them less durable than the FMA's (I'm not the most graceful lander sometimes  ).

I am in the process of building my vacuum forming box and have a number of positives waiting to be used. Problem is, is that I've never made a negative out of plaster before and I'm concerned that I might ruin the originals when I make the plugs. I'll be making a trip to my local Hobby Lobby for plaster today and would welcome any tips, tricks, suggestions etc.

Wood prop techniques
Don, Easy buddy, just pokin' a bit of fun. I'm glad that the CF props will be allowed this year, and I'm happy to hear you'll be running Q-40s this year. Perhaps the CF prop ruling will open the doors a bit for the class. My fear is that the ART of prop shaping will quickly go the way of the albatross, Formula 1, Q-15s and Rossi powered quickies.

Question for the experts...Launching
Go with underhand but be prepared for the engine torque effect. My JKA MiGs bank hard to the left upon release. Have someone throw it for you the first few flights and be prepared to throw full right aileron (low rates) into it until it gets up to speed. I launch my MiGs on low rates and hold full right aileron for release. About 50' later you can center the stick.

Which Brand of Resin Should I use?
I have used both EZ-Lam and West Systems. They both work great. I have switched to West Systems for a couple of reasons. The main reason being is that if I run out, I jump in the car and go get more! I have found it to be easy to work with and it skins over faster than EZ-Lam. Both have resulted in good, strong parts, whether from wet layup or vacuum bagged composites.

What's so great about a 4-stroke?
I own many more two strokes than I do four strokes...BUT, If I could afford it, I would probably own equal amounts. The power curve of a four stroke is almost the polar opposite of a two stroke. For an analogy, in a zero to 100mph race, a four stroke will win every time from zero to 50mph, then the two stroke will run away from the four stroke. I wouldn't put a four stroke in a Patriot or Shoestring (read speed machines) but I wouldn't put a two stroke in a Super Cub or Stearman bipe (read low speed power). Four strokes finicky? Not at all, if you ask me. Some may take a couple minutes more to get just right (like the YS), but then they stay perfect from there on, and you won't need to touch them ever again. Loss of downline braking? Over a two stroke? Umm, NO. They have far better compression braking than any two stroke. And lastly...they sound cool.

Glue for epp foam?
Goop works great on EPP, but ONLY on EPP. It will eat any other kind of foam. BUT, I don't think anything will stick to goop if it is smeared on the outer surfaces to be covered. Use it carefully and don't let it get on the surfaces to be covered.
