RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
To fix the boom get a steel rod slide it through the boom raise it on a couple of blocks of wood so the boom is hanging on it then tap out the dents and minor creases with a hammer, best to use a block of wood between the hammer and boom though. Ive fixed mine three times now and its still working fine.

RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
I can tell you from experience that you want your swashplate as level as possible, my last crash was a combination of a half set up swash i.e it was level from one angle, then a mate dropped in we polished of a few beers and I in my slightly inebriated state suggested i show his son my Heli, took it out and it flew perfectly straight into the pool fence [:@] after investigating what caused my flight to disaster I discovered my tilted swash which as to be expected was tilted in the very same direction my heli flew in. The 36 is a reasonably tough bird though and fortunately I only had to trim an extra centimeter or so of the align woodies and she was up and flying again.

Ive noticed the new ball links on some of the 36's but haven't seen them on the spare parts lists yet, I was hoping to upgrade mine to get rid of the z bends as they tend to bind a bit.

It may also be just a loose grub screw , check the one under the main gear is tight as that will cause the same problem your having

RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
Jascamera, didnt mean to sound critical of your expenditure or anyone elses for that matter, as its your money and as you said your having a bit of fun which is really what counts in the long run, at least when or if you switch to a better heli you will have a few decent parts to use, funnily enough Ive been suprised that my blade grips have stood up well to some pretty heavy and pretty shoddy flying[:D], Ive had to straighten the main axis and flybar 3 times now and I also straightened and removed a large dent from the tail boom, repaired the woodies twice and the free foamies a couple of times and repaired one of the horns on the tail blades, one thing that has been a money saver on the 36 is the belt driven tail Ive had mine jammed with weeds numerous times and so far its stood up very well, the frame also seems pretty resilient.

RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
Total cost for me so far is $250au for heli, $49au for walkera brushless and esc (got it cheap as they had advertised it incorrectly), $99au for a Swallow charger, 1xtslip cover $13au, and 1 x set of Align Wooden blades $16au Total = $427au, Im still using the NiMh battery which is going ok the blue lipo was rubbish. Its not a bad heli, Ive had quite a few good hovers in the last 2.5 months and a couple of heavy crashes which Ive repaired myself, apart from the T slip cover, although I did repair that as well and Ive also had to cut the Align woodies down twice to repair damage, they're now the same size as the original foamies [:D] so all up Im pretty happy, the charger works for all my daughters toys as well as mine so it was worth getting. I'm saving up for a good Tx but thats because Id like to get a Trex down the track, a mate has one upgraded to cnc'ed parts and is going to give me a lot of his plastic parts as spares, I really think some are spending way to much getting these 'cheap' helis to fly, at $750 I think I would have given up on it a long time ago, I really bought it so that I could get a grip on the mechanics of the thing and learn how to strip them down and reassemble, fiddling with the settings and repairing them is half the fun and challenge for me.

RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
Not sure but it sure looks like a Shogun copy, it has the tail shaft I see. Dont think I will ever get a heli that doesnt have belt drive its saved me a lot of repairs already, Ive landed mine numerous times in the weeds and even though the tail has been jammed it still works a treat. Im finding the 36 a very tough beast had a mate over today and after a few ales brought the heli out, gave it a quick balance and tune and looked at the swash from one angle and it was spot on so I took off, the heli swerved sharply to the left and plowed straight into the swimming pool safety fence, at full speed. Luckily although it looked pretty severe all that happened was I lost a few mm off the end of my Align woodies, no other damage amazingly. after picking up the heli I noticed that from a different view the swash was way off centre, lesson learned dont trim out the heli after a few beers[:D], thankfully I actually enjoy the challenge of repairing these things.

RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
Lothar, as i remember it from the last time I stripped it down the maingear is held by the top bearings (#47) being held in place by the frame, my main gear doesnt move up and down at all, might be worth stripping down and checking there is no breakage or wear at that section of the frame. There is a fix here somewhere which might help, it involves moving the elevator arm over to the other side and putting a shogun ball link onto the triangle peice. Definately no part #41 on my heli though.

RE: Thecheatscalc's 36 tuning and assy
Mines two and a half months old and it has z bends, I think it would be easy to replace them with some Shogun ball links. The Cheatscalcs looks much nicer than mine. Thecheatscalc a z bend is like what you have on your aeileron and collective servo, a wire bent like a z.

RE: changing heli, need 2 pick new one
I quite like my 36, it hasn't given me many problems, but would you really want to risk a good expensive heli with Walkera electronics, Im saving up for a Tx at the moment so I will be able to get a Trex or Shogun kit, in the meantime the 36 is a nice cheap option for practising hovering.

to test your gyro just unplug the motor and swivel the heli around left and right you should see the pitch of the tail blades change to counteract the movement

RE: Mailman just delivered the Walkera #36
The deans connectors shouldn't burn out there very solid peices of work, ultraviolet, Ive been using teflon spray rather than grease on the parts you mentioned no dirt build up and things move very smoothly, you can get it at any bike shop. My gyro has worked quite well outside so far, main issue I find is getting the tail belt adjusted just right when it slips the heli likes to turn and head towards me, my head on skills are not very good so I usually bring it straight down, Im looking at drilling through the tail boom to keep it in place better.

RE: Mailman just delivered the Walkera #36
The free lipo is not really up to heli flying even with a good charger, some people get lucky but they are often a combination of various lipos meaning charge rates vary, the stock nimh works ok for practice with a good charger, but my next investment will be a lipo from kokum expensive but they deliver a 15c constant charge the chinese one is about 6- 8c not really enough for a heli and dangerous if charged incorrectly or if the draw from the motor is to much. Im having a ball with the 36 I havent had to spend a cent on repairs as I've fixed the damage from two crashes myself, only investment so far is a brushless setup and a good charger.

RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
Citybydbay, you can straighten the boom and main shaft with some careful tapping with a hammer for the boom insert a steel rod and elevate both ends so the boom hangs on it then get a bit of wood and tap it with a hammer, I revived mine this way,. Ive also straightened my main axis by tapping carefully with a hammer heli si up and flying as stable as before my crash, total cost zero [;)] main shaft should come out by removing the two hex screws and it should slide out you may also need to undo the two halves of the frame if the bearings are stuck.

RE: building a micro from scratch
You could try the micro car actuators for forward/backward flight moving the magnet to adjust weight, first it would be best to see if you can get a stable hover, there are lots of threads around from 1-3 years old with people who have tried to make an under 10g heli.

If you could modify the tail to use a belt drive you might be able to use a simple actuator to give fwd back, or left right

I had a go at one of these a year or so ago, never got it finished but had fun along the way, I was using one of the little two channel rc cars you can get, Ill be keeping my eye on your progress, as it was a part of the reason I got the 36, to learn more on the workings of helis.

RE: ** WALKERA DRAGONFLY 36 *
Ive had the Walkera brushless for a month now and the really hard start is a lot smoother now, as yet Ive still not stripped any gears, my heli is probably flying the best since I bought it 2 and a half months ago, Ive only had to purchase the brushless motor an esc and a charger, Ive had two major crashes and was able to repair everything at no cost. Im still running stock electronics on mine and since its been all trimmed and set up correctly Ive not had one glitch, so far for the $300au Ive invested in the chopper Ive had a lot of fun.

RE: Thecheatscalc's 36 tuning and assy. (contiued at helifever)
Nice work thecheatscalc, takes a bit of time but it is well worth getting those servo arms at 90 degrees, had a wind free day today and was finally back in the air with a nice stable, shake free hover after my crash. Stripping the whole heli down to bare bones gives you the confidence to fix most problems that will arise and once its correctly balanced the 36 hovers quite well, and even with the nimh you get a good 7 or 8 mins. keep up the good work.

RE: ** WALKERA DRAGONFLY 36 *
Ronniki16, just remove the blades the blade holders and undo the nuts, everything else will slide off and the axle will slip out, you can leave the upper part of the blade holder attached to the ball link if you like, then just roll the axle on a table and see if there is a bend, if there is gently tap it out until it is straight. I have some pictures but have no idea how to post them, and nowhere to host them unfortunately.

RE: ** WALKERA DRAGONFLY 36 *
Ah missed the bit about the stock motor, the investment into brushless is really well worth it, the heli will leap into the air once one of these is installed, mine was a bit the same with the stock motor, it couldnt really get out of ground effect. I think the problem is not actually the stock motor though, but more likely the built in esc as the Rx stays a lot cooler with a brushless esc and others have mentioned using the motor elsewhere with some success. As for the charger my nimh stops charging at about 15.5v so a charger is something you will need at some stage, the swallow does lipos and nimh nicad etc so is quite handy there are quite a few other chargers as well this just happens to be the one I got.

RE: ** WALKERA DRAGONFLY 36 *
Ronikki, theres an axle through the t piece maybe its bent, if so take it out and you can tap out the bend reasonably easily. There is a rubber o ring then a plastic tube then two bearings and nut, the blades can move via the bearings, I think the axle is stationary because of the rubber o rings but I'm not positive on that. Floatboy about 23mm between the two ball links, but you can adjust them so that you get the correct pitch settings. Gtx_slotcar the supplied nimh charger is rubbish you really need to get a good charger Im using a swallow advance and this will charge and cycle them giving much better performance, and they wont get hot either.

RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
Are you sure you've fully loosened the two screws, I totally removed mine to be sure, the shaft then slides straight out once they are removed, I hope someone at Walkera QC[8|] hasnt superglued your shaft to one of the bearing cases, if so strip down everything and seperate the two halves of the frame, its held together by some very small screws, at least then you should be able to see where the problem is. To get the main gear out I found it was necessary to lundo most of the screws holding the frame together anyway, as one of the bearings is held in by the frame itself.

RE: Is it normal for a Brushless Motor to get hot after a minute or so ?
The walkera brushless is sealed so a heat sink made from a aluminium can folded concertina style and rapped around works very well to keep the heat down.

RE: Walkera Dragonfly #36
I had the same problem with the screws, fortunately I keep any when I strip down things so came up with a pair that fit snuggly, I have my esc slung underneath with a homemade heatsink attached and all held on by a couple of cable ties. Ive had a nasty crash with this setup and there was no damage to any components. Ive used a couple of plastic spacers with the screws I used on the motor and Ive noticed an added bonus, after the heavy crash although the blades thrashed on for a second or so the motor although tight enough for flight at full revs, had slipped forward a fraction with the force of the crash which stopped the main gear stripping. A good place to find small screws is an old cd-rom or hard drive or an old video recorder, if you have any of these lying around.
