It could be that the diffs aren't tight enough, or if there's a slipper clutch, it may be too loose. when checking the diffs, you should be able to hold the outdrives/diff hubss, and you should not be able to spin the gear. Tim

These are run packs for your car/truck? If so, I would try charging them at 4.5 amps or higher and see what happens. You should be fine charging them at the higher rate. Tim

If the battery manufacturer states that they can be charged at 3C, then 5 amps is well within that. Tim

Are these brand new packs? If so, it is very typical for new packs to false peak the first couple of charges. Also, what charge rate are you charging these packs at? Tim

RE: flustered!! need help!!
Yes...you can charge that battery as high as 3.2 amps. The 20C is the maximum discharge rate that the battery can handle. This is given as a multiple of C, with C being the capacity of the battery. Your 3200 mAh battery can also be considered a 3.2 Ah battery. Using the 20C formula, 20 x 3.2 = 64. This is telling you that the battery shouldn't be discharged any higher than 64 amps. Your charger/discharger will in now ay be able to discharge a battery at that high of an amperage. The cut-off you're talking about may be the voltage per cell. For LiPo batteries, I would use 3.3 volts under load. You really shouldn't have to discharge LiPos though. For that battery, 3C would be 3.2 x 3 = 9.6 amps. A lot of batteries can handle a higher than recommended charge rate. For instance, I just learned from the manufacturer of our RFI LiPo batteries that they can be safely charged at 4.5C, or 4.5 times the capacity of the battery. However, I would consult the battery manufacturer before you attempt this, and I would definitely use a LiPo charging bag just in case.

RE: charging help for these batteries
I wouldn't charge the receiver pack any higher than 3 amps. It very well may false peak the first time or two that you charge it. Keep charging until you feel the battery begins to get warm, that's how you know it fully charged. After the first charge or so, it should take a full charge on the first try without any false peaks. The charger has a mAh screen, so you can gauge how much of a charge the battery is taking by looking at that screen. The 2500's, you won't be able to charge them through the charge jack because of the reverse polarity protection in the charger and the transmitter. You will have to charge them in a separate holder, which you should be able to find at Radio Shack. I wouldn't go any higher than 2.5 amps if you're in a hurry because they are a smaller cell, but otherwise 1 amp on those should be fine. Again, the warmth in the battery is a good indication if they're fully charged.

RE: flustered!! need help!!
Hi Rick, You have to look at everything as a learning experience. Over the years, things have definitely become more advanced than the used to be, but with a little reading, experience, and asking questions, it will all start to make sense. NiCd's are the tried and true batteries that have been around for years. They are a very durable cell and can take a lot of abuse. They can accept a very high charge rate compared to their capacities, as high as 3C. The problem with NiCd's is that they're heavy, don't have a very high capacity, and can't handle the demands of high power RC systems. The thing is, we want to go faster, longer. LiPos allow us to do that. With LiPos, you don't have to worry about cycling. If you use NiCd's regularly, then you really only need the cycle them once every 25-30 charges. This helps to alleviate the imbalance that would occur in the cells. With LiPos, you use an outside balancer. Again, NiCds are very durable, if you slightly over charge one cell in the pack due to imbalance, there is usually no noticeable damage, it just heats up more. With LiPos, if you overcharge one cell in the pack due to imbalance, there is the risk of explosion and fire, that's why we use balancers. So when we talk about charging and discharging, we talk in terms of C. C is the capacity of the battery. Most LiPo batteries should be charged at a 1C rate, or 1 times the capacity of the battery. For reference - 1000mAh = 1 Ah. So if you have a 4200mAh LiPo, you can charge it as high as 4.2 amps. The important thing when charging LiPos, is to make sure that all of the settings are correct on your charger. If the LiPo is a 2S pack, then make sure the charger says 2 cells. You may also notice that LiPos have another rating on them, for instance 25C. This is the maximum discharge rate. So again using the 4200 mAh battery, if it's rated at 25C - 4.2 x 25 = 105 amps, you can draw 105 amps from this battery continuously. This is a quick explanation, if you have any further questions feel free to email me at tim@modelrectifier.com I hope this helps you out. Tim

It depends on which version you have. If the charge rate goes up to 5 amps, then it should have the LiPo specific setting in it. If not, then send it to me with a check or a money order for $43.00 and I'll swap it for a new 977. Tim

Sorry for the delay, and sorry for the problems you're having. Send me the power supply and I'll replace it for you.
