RE: KingTech K-80
My K80 F has about 8 hours on it, 63 cycles (according to the FADEC). Other than some minor adjustments to the start settings needed when it was new it has worked flawless until this past weekend. The start sequence went fine except that instead of idling around 44,000 it was idling around 62,000. The idle was not eratic, just too high. I shut it down and let it cool a bit, checked all the obvious stuff (fuel filter, fuel lines etc.) and found nothing wrong. I then restarted and all was good, good start with consistent idle around 44,000 RPM. Is there any thing else I should check out? Is this normal or should I be concerned? Thanks for the help, Tom

RE: TBM Shock Jet
The 16oz needed must be due to mounting your turbine farther aft, I also have the new version and my balances perfectly with no extra weight in the nose (just the batteries). I did, however, have to Dremel away at the former to get my Kingtech to fit with the FOD screen. Even with the extra weight it seems to handle well. How does the JetJoe/ Shokjet combo fly compared to other turbines you have flown?

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Sorry to hear about the flameout, I'm glad the damage was minimal. The SJ is pretty stout but I agree the front bulkhead is a weak point. -Tom

What's the downside (pardon the pun) of running the vent out the bottom?

RE: TBM Shock Jet
I used CA hinges on the elevator and rudder, and the nylon hinges on the wing. 30 flights to date and everything still looks good.

Very nice project Mike! At 12 lbs the DLE 30 should be a nice fit for power.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
The K80F is a little heavier than the Rabbit RCGUY refers to, but I did not have to put a single oz of lead in my SJ to get it to balance. I simply put a 3 cell LiFE 2100 mah battery for the turbine, along with a couple of 2 cell LiPo 1300 mah batteries (for the receiver etc.) in the nose and it balanced perfectly. To minimize the possibility of over stressing the wing I fiberglassed the center of my wing (9" from the center) with two layers of 6 oz fiberglass cloth and resin. It took a little work but you can hardly tell I made the mod and it gives me a lot of piece of mind so the extra effort was worth it to me. -Tom

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Here is another photo from the bottom. I had to cut out a little from the bottom of the airframe but there is room to put it back as long as you make it a removable plate, I just have not gotten around to it yet. I have 28 flights on my SJ with the K80F and I would say that the K80 is a very good match for the SJ. I fly most of my flights at just a hair over half throttle and I'm getting 8 minute flights with about a third of my main tank left for reserve (50 oz main tank). The half throttle setting provides plenty of power for big loops, cuban eights etc. I clocked it on radar at 129 straight and level at about 3/4 throttle, if our field was big enough to allow full acceleration I'm confident she could do high 140s at full throttle. Given that the SJ is basically a flying drag chute 140+ is pretty impressive.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
I have made some more modifications since the above two photos were taken. The additional mods I made allowed me to get a FOD screen installed. It took a little more surgery but nothing a Dremel tool can't handle in a few minutes. I will post some more recent photos.

Thanks. By mixing I meant mixing the JetA and 1K in the tank. I mixed the turbine oil and 1K in a 5gal container as you described. -Tom

RE: kingtech turbines
I have about 3 hours of time on my K80F, I have been burning JetA the entire time. I now have 5 gal of 1-K Kerosene, do I need to do anything different to start using the 1-K? Can I just mix the JetA and 1-K in the tank? Does it cause any problems with the FADEC when you switch fuels? Thanks for the help, Tom

RE: What Happened to Trim Aircraft Wheels & Brakes?
I went ahead and ordered them from Cindy at Aeroloft, she said she would order from Tony at Trim and have Tony ship them directly to me. I would have ordered directly from Trim but their website does not list out the brakes for ordering, there is just a photo of assorted wheels with no price listed?? It should not be this hard to spend $200.

Thanks for the reply, sounds like i'm not the first customer left hanging...that makes me feel a little better but I certainly don't remember reading anything on their website stating they will ship their products when they "get around to it" Tom

RE: What Happened to Trim Aircraft Wheels & Brakes?
Is Great Northern Models still in business? I ordered a set of Trim brakes from them 3 1/2 weeks ago and have not heard anything since. I have tried leaving them voicemail but no one has returned my calls. I also tried email but nothing so far...If they are still in business they won't be for long if this the best they can do. I can't even get in touch with them to tell them never mind! Besides Aeroloft, does anyone else sell Trim Brake sets? -Tom

Toprudder, I flew out at the Aeromasters a few times around 2001-2002 but they did not seem interested in new members because I never could get anyone to engage in any kind of conversation so I stopped going out there.

I completed my turbine waiver test today with my Shokjet and K80, now I just have to wait on AMA to get my turbine waiver number/card. Big thanks to Mike (rcguy59) for his help with my training. I'd also like to send a big thanks to Roy for making it easy to schedule the check ride, both of these guys are outstanding ambassadors for turbine flying and I feel fortunate to know them. rcguy59 coined a new term today to describe flying a Shokjet, he called it "Thumb Candy," I could not agree more! Cheers, Tom
