being charged for enhancements without sellecting them
I got booted off site mid way through posting my ad, then after reviving it, it says I owe for enhancements? I've now canceled the ad, but my account still shows I'm being billed for enhancements. This is the second time this has happened to me while attempting to place a free market place ad. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help. Kevin

RE: 1/4 scale champ
It is very odd that we have not seen one review of this 1/4 scale Champ on any of the RC forums considering how long its been out? That alone should have been my clue to steer clear. It has a place in the market, unfortunately the current construction methods, fit, and finish are not representative of the asking price. IMO it’s more in the $349-$399 category. Kevin

RE: 1/4 scale champ
I bought one a couple weeks back when they ran their 20% off sale. I love the Champ subject, but this ARF is a big disappointment IMO. Generally sloppy workmanship for a supposed $589 ARF. Covering job is very average at best, and they really hacked up the side window openings cutting out the covering. Very old school strut attachment with bolts into blind nuts. Struts do not fold like the Hanger 9 1/4 Cub and Talor Craft. The struts are a 1/4" hardwood stick with balsa contouring, apparently only along for looks. I doubt they will survive the vibration of a gas engine for long. The lower fuselage stringers are very lightweight balsa and bowed badly (one is cracked) from over shrinkage of the Ultracoat. The tinted windows are there for a very good reason; the inside of the cockpit area is full of bulkheads with laser holes all over in them. It’s also designed primarily as an electric setup, has a bottom battery hatch cover that’s held in place with a single magnet in the front. The hatch will never stay put with a gas engine running as is. The N numbers on my wing are even applied very crooked. Contacting customer service at HL has been a big disappointment so far. They initially wanted me to pay return shipping plus a 15% restocking fee. Supposedly I will be getting a UPS return authorization, but full refund is very unlikely according to the gal I talked with based on the discription of the problems. Apparently quality control issues do not warrant a refund because they are subject to customer opinion. They generally only offer refunds on shipping damaged goods. They also made no offer to send out quality replacement parts, nor did they ask to see any pictures of the defects. I have to send it back all on good faith that they will make the correct judgment call ater they inspect it. If I can't get them to accept some pictures of the defects as proof, I will likely end up keeping it as is. It’s been a very disappointing experience. What's also upsetting is that they really brag these up as a high end ARF in their advertising. I see they've now dropped the price down to $529 because of the poor economy. Never again for me. Quadra 35?
A friend has what looks exactly like an old Quadra 35. Engine was pulled off a Canadian made ice auger. Problem is it runs clockwise. Is there a practical way to reverse the run direction without spending a fortune on parts? What needs to be done to make it run counterclockwise? Thanks for any advise. Kevin

RE: Hanger 9 1/3 Cap232 single aileron servo
I think the original run of this ARF had die-cut parts, at least the wing ribs. Horizon sent me out a replacement set of wings(because my originals had damage) and the ribs were all die-cut, those wings also ended up going back because of defects. Finally got a good set now. If your wood parts all look laser cut you should have the newer version. I think this plane has been kicking around close to 10 years now? must be a good flier. Kevin

Mike, Would you recommend the inboard or outside servo location with single aileron servo's? The Cap ailerons are constant cord and I'm thinking there is more flight load closer to the tip? Kevin

krayzc, Good to know. If I can get this close the first time it’ll save me some work re-aliening the cowl later. So, you suppose you have about 1 degree up? I have the re-issue coming to my local hobby shop. Older 3W 78 going it, so mine won’t be quite as light as yours. Should be no worse than the GT 80 they recommend. Kevin

RE: Hanger 9 1/3 Cap232 single aileron servo
ORIGINAL: arobatx I'm curious, folks that are running just one servo, on one designed for two...are you stiffening the ailerons to help prevent flutter? I also recall Dick Hanson going over some experimentation on this topic, and finding that driving the large ailerons with just one servo, but in the outer servo bays actually helped prevent flutter better...or maybe my memory is beginning to fade...any thoughts?
Outer bay? That’s interesting. I guess in theory there is more load out at the tip end. Have any idea what thread Dick H was discussing that in? I know plenty of folks are doing single aileron servo's on the 33 percenters, I was just hoping Mike would chime in and give his opinion on whether the Cap structure (as designed) is up to it. I suppose its one of those iffy trick questions. Kevin

Hanger 9 1/3 Cap232 single aileron servo
Mike, What’s your opinion of using a single 8611, 8711 or a HS 7955 inside servo per wing on this aircraft? I see the Horizon completion guide now lists a single 8711 per wing and one on rudder. Wondering if that is an official recommendation or a typo? Kevin

RE: Solartex Covering Woes
Guys, thanks for the comments. What I’m experiencing is definitely moisture absorption and extraction of the wood. My basement has not changed temp more that a few degrees’ since summer. Relative humidity hovers around 50% with my dehumidifier running during the summer, outside it changes daily with the weather fronts depending if they come down from Canada or up from the Gulf. Right now rh is about 20 percent in the basement, it will stay that way until the snow starts to melt outside and the furnace shuts down. Its about impossible to pump enough moisture into the air to keep the house rh stable. Running a humidifier in the winter here causes water to rain down the insides of the windows from condensation. What bothers me is that we do not have very elastic covering materials available to us. Model aircraft covering needs to stretch and contract with the airframe movement, much like on a full-scale bird. But I suppose balsa wood is mostly to blame. Try building a full scale out of balsa and I suppose you’d have a similar problem. It’s amazing how loose the covering has gotten on the little wood sample I have here. That piece of balsa must have shrunken up at least a 1/16 across the grain in order for the covering to become that loose. Best time to cover is obviously during the dry dead of winter here, then the balsa tries to expand the covering come next August. We also get some summer days with the rh up in the 80's and 90's and temps about the same. Right now its about -10 degrees' F outside. Kevin

Solartex Covering Woes
I've had an ongoing issue keeping my film coverings tight here in Wisconsin. We seem to have a very hostile environment humidity wise. Balsa wood is like a sponge when it comes to absorbing humidity in the summer, and then drying in the winter. Over the years I’d heard rave reviews about how nice Solartex goes on and stays tight throughout climate changes. So I decided to cover a couple small test samples this summer and see how it goes over the winter. Covered the below pictured pieces of balsa back in June. Sure enough, the stuff goes on like a dream, including around sharp inside and outside corners. I did everything exactly as the instructions said temp wise. Picture is how they look after setting in my basement up to this point. That’s a lot of slack covering for such a small piece of wood. I can’t imagine shrinking that all out without overheating the covering. You know how it goes; you can only shrink this stuff so much. To complicate matters I rubbed the covering adhesive onto the wood as suggested, so its not going to slide and tighten up real easily even if it has additional shrinkage left in it. Ideally a guy just leaves it alone and in theory it will tighten back up come mid June this summer. Problem is it won’t be tight come April flying season. I’ve also noticed it never tightens as much as it loosens. I think the balsa grain goes through a compression cycle over the seasons. Over a number of years the wood actually gets smaller across the grain. It’ a totally frustrating process putting a lot of effort into a covering job, only to have the thing look like a total saggy mess after a couple flying seasons. I’ve been at this for about 30 years, and I'm still at a loose for how to keep covering tight on a model airplane. It just seems like most of the films available have little to no elasticity in them. They initially shrink, but they retain very little tension on the underlying structure. I've had the best luck keeping Oracover tight. I’ve totally given up on covering the plane I had planned using the Solartex on. I’m open to all suggestions. Kevin

RE: Gary Allen 33% Bücker Jungmeister
Thanks for measuring CharlieK. Sounds close for my 78, I was a little conservative with my 12". I measure 11" across my plug caps. What concerns me is the right thrust kicking the forward plug cap way out on the left. Probably not the best airframe for this engine. Sure wish there was a nice 1/3 scale kit of this plane on the market, not sure if I'm up to the scratch build. Sure is a nice looking bipe. My 13 year old son drools over meisters ever since seeing the white one in the Great Waldo Pepper movie. Wonder what ever became of that plane? Edit) I guess the Bucker plane was yellow & red in the Waldo Pepper movie. Also had a none radial engine. Kevin

RE: Kimball-Somenzini Python Build Thread
I have a nice old 3W 78B2 thats just broken in. I was wondering how it might haul this plane around. Engine weighs close to 7 lbs with the ignition and stock muffler setup. 78B2's have been known to swing a Menz 26-10 around 6000 rpm's. Anyone know what the actual weight of a DA-100 with ignition and stock mufflers weighs for comparison? I've just been thinking about a good home for this engine, and I thought a bipe in this weight range would be a good airframe. Maybe not a 3D rocket ship, but should be enough power for unlimited vertical even at 27 pounds? Thanks for any insight. Kevin

RE: YS110 cracked crankcase
Hi Troy, Thanks for your input. This engine has probably close to 16 gallons of Wildcat 20/20 through it, then possibly another 32 gallons Wildcat 30% heli fuel through it. I fly a lot, and Its given me very good service, so I'm not complaining that I have not gotten my moneys worth. Its never been run lean intentionaly for any length of time, of course if that crack showed up during its last run, then possible it got a short lean run after loss of crankcase pressure. Strange thing is I never noticed any lose of power or detonation during that last flight. I would expect it somewhat difficult for Richard to reallly tell the difference between cause and effect of a defective casting? I was totally shocked after pulling the cowl off and seeing that large crack. I fully understand the rareness of a defective casting surfacing after 3 years of pretty hard usage. With the high hours on this engine, I do not feel it would be practical to invest in a major repair at this point it its usefull lifespan. On the other hand, a guy just hates to through something in the recycle bin that was providing perfectly good performance last time it was used. I most likely will send it to Richard just to satisfy my curiousity. Thanks again for your comments. Kevin

YS110 cracked crankcase
I've been more than happy with my trusty YS 110 for going on 3 years now. It was running great, and all was well last week when I put my Funtana 90 away. I did notice a bit more oil than normal leaking out the top of the cowl at the fuselage. Tonight I went out to fly and could not get it to fire up. After some closer inspection I noticed the large crack on the lower side of the crankcase(picture attached). I've never seen anything like this, not sure what to make of it. Its obviously not crash damage, and the mount is nylon, so I do not see how it could be under mounting stress. Just what could possibly cause something like this to happen? My worries are that this will not be covered under YS warranty on a 3 year old engine[:o] Kevin
