RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale
ORIGINAL: Lucky Dog Your weathering is spot on Jim. Did you decide whether or not to ''tone down'' the Lozenge a bit?
Yeah, I sprayed it over with a "wash" of clear satin with a little light gray mixed in and now it matches my Fokker D7 almost perfectly. I'm almost done with the landing gear repairs and the plane should be flying again soon![:)] Jim

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale
Here's a picture of mine taken at the Ohio Dawn Patrol event by Mike Belmear. The plane looks like it should be squirrelly but Barry and I were both pleasantly surprised at how docile the plane really is.
ORIGINAL: F4u5 Hi Jim, I know this is an older thread (well not that old, but...), but I see one of these kits for sale on RCU. Do you still have your SSW? How does this bird fly...well? Jeff
It flies really well. Barry has also been flying his. We flew both of them at the Ohio Dawn Patrol and he has flown his at the Hoosier DP and at another event in Kentucky. I damaged mine in a radio "brown-out" accident but it's almost ready to fly again. Jim
ORIGINAL: Steve Percifield Hey Jim, Hopefully starting to get back to normal, not that normal is any inprovement. Thanks for attending and supporting the event. Soryy to hear about your Gotha. Hope the damage wasn't too bad. I heard Randy won the BUSA kit. Couldn't have been a more appropriate winner. I have had many great comments on your demonstration. Thanks for doing that. The strat of a new HDP tradition.\ \ steve
I think the covering demo went pretty well. A lot of people were impressed with how easy and fast the Koverall and Polycrylic method is. How did you like the "get well" wing? The Gotha had a nice flight on Thursday but on Friday it veered off the runway on takeoff. I'm thinking about ways to get some ground handling on it. It doesn't really have any the way it is now. I probably could have patched it up enough to fly some more but I want to get the ground handling issue worked out before I fly it again. Jim

RE: Hoosier Dawn Patrol
Glad to have you back on line, Steve.[8D] The event was great (as usual) and Matt did a fine job of filling in for you as event director. There was nonstop flying all weekend, especially on Saturday, when the most number of pilots was there. And thanks to the generous grand prize at the raffle, Randy will be making the leap from finicky 1/6 scale glow planes to the world of 1/3 scale BalsaUSA gassers![:D] Jim
ORIGINAL: geezeraviation Sorry Ron, spray can. If you dont want yellowing use Poly crylic but around areas where fuel is likely to find the surface the Poly Urethane is much better. Doc
I've been using Minwax Polycrylic satin clear as a final coat on the wings and tail surfaces, and Warbird Colors clear (with crosslinker) on the fuselage, or wherever raw gasoline can get on it. Neither one of them yellows the colors. Jim
ORIGINAL: extra300s That's a good schedule. I see that at the Indiana Warbird fly-in the next weekend they are having noontime shows, which unless you are part of the show takes away from flying time. I just finished repairing all the broken wood on the N-11.......all that I could find anyway.......and patched up the covering. The landing gear has been straightened, epoxied, painted and re-installed.....brace wires adjusted. I just have 2 more brace wires and 2 more flying wires to fit back on and she's ready to fly again! YAHOO ! ! ! ! ! ! OH NO ! I won't know how to act with TWO flyable airplanes!
Way to go, Art!! I knew you could do it! Unfortunatey, I crashed my Siemens-Schuckert last week and the damage is about that same as your N-11...repairable, but a pain in the a$$. I have the airframe repaired and patched but the LG repair is going to be a bigger job. I have other planes, though....YAY HOOSIER DAWN PATROL! Jim
ORIGINAL: valleyk I'm building a 1/3 busa nieuport17 and was curious how the one in this dawn patrol event crashed. Is this plane not stable in the wind or under powered?
Sam was flying the heck out of it and was really having fun with it until that happened. It was just a freak accident. In the late morning and early afternoon the air got kind of turbulent because of storms that were in the area. All of our planes were getting tossed around at certain times of the day. All the BUSA 1/3 scale N-17s I've seen fly great. I have one myself in the box that's going to get built this winter![8D] Jim

Sounds like it could be the weave of the Walmart fabric that's causing the problem.

RE: BALSA USA 1/3 SOPWITH PUP?????
Is that Koverall, or Solartex covering? I haven't had the Polycrylic cause the fabric to loosen. Did you put any small vent holes between the ribs? I always put a pin hole between each rib on the bottom side. It keeps air from getting trapped and expanding or shrinking from temp changes. Polycrylic will not shrink the fabric by itself. It has to be pre-shrunk with heat. Instead of putting more PolyC on, wait a day and put the vent holes in like I said, and then go over that piece lightly with a heat gun. It should shrink up tight again. BTW, what I use is Minwax Polycrylic and Sig Koverall. Jim

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale
I almost forgot about the ammo chutes that go on either side of the guns so i made them this weekend. They are a prominent feature on this plane. There won't be time to get a full-body pilot in the model before the Ohio Dawn Patrol, so I painted up a 1/3 scale bust that I had, and stuck him in for the time being. I hate seeing an empty cockpit when the model is flying by! Jim

RE: BALSA USA 1/3 SOPWITH PUP?????
Hi rotorboy, I agree with Art that there should have been balsa blocks glued to the spars for the Robart hinges to grip onto. But don't despair! At this point, instead of tearing the old hinges out and tearing up the covering and structure too much, you could cut small sq. holes in the covering (on the bottom side) where the hingepoints are, and work some thickened epoxy around the barbs and up against the spar. Then you would put patches over the holes. This would all be done from the bottom side, so it won't be seen. Jim

RE: DH 2
ORIGINAL: Eindecker_pilot Did you use doubled flying wires on your Gotha? I can't remember. I assumed I would use doubled flying wires simply because that's what's worked on my 1/3 scale Pup, so that's my plan. I got a chuckle when I read you also wanted to put some extra insurance on those crimps with the solder. My JB weld here is just a cold version of the same idea. I did that on my Pup too. Probably never need it but.... I'm also planning to use the 1/4 scale Balsa USA nicopress system.
No double flying wires on the Gotha. The real one didn't appear to have them so I figured it was OK. Plus, that plane has so many bays in the wings, if a flying wires fails, the ones in the other bays are still there. My Nieuport 28 has double wires and the Siemens has single wires but they are heavier cable. I solder the crimped ends because I saw one that pulled loose on somebody's plane. Eventually, I'm going to put turnbuckles on the Siemens because that one doesn't have a zillion wires like the DH-2 and Gotha.

RE: DH 2
Greg, Nice to see you're moving along on this! I had my 1/3 scale one all assembled and I did all the rigging. It was amazing how rigid the whole structure (including the booms) becomes when all the rigging is in place. BTW, I'm not doubling the flying wires. I figure with the two bays, it's strong enough with single wires. It sure feels strong enough! I know it's sacrilege but I'm using 4-40 Dubro clevises and solder-on cable ends instead of turnbuckles. I don't want to go broke buying turnbuckles for this thing and I like the convenience of spring clevises for assembly and disassembly anyway. At the other ends of the cables I used the balsa USA nicopress system. I went back and wicked in a little solder on those for extra insurance. I had to take it back apart for finishing and painting, and I haven't built the landing gear yet, or done the control cable runs and pulleys. The DH-2 is a complex airplane. It's going to be amazing to see it with all the rigging and control cables on it! Jim

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale
I decided to make my own 1/3 scale pilot. Now I know why they charge $100 a piece for them...it's a lot of work!![X(] I would have bought one but I need a total of four: one for the SSW, one for my Nieuport 28, one for the DH-2 that's under construction, and one for the Nieuport 17 that's still in the box. I made patterns and molds off the parts so I could reproduce them. The bodies will be soft wire and batting, and my wife is going to sew the outfits. They are all going to get a one-piece jumpsuit, dark brown for the German, and light brown for the others. Jim
