RE: Saito 450 Radial
Roger, I have several 450r's and I can tell you it should run at full throttle. I had one that did exactly what yours does. It was caused by the intake manifold assembly rotated 120 degrees from where it should of been. I was able to confirm this by checking one that was new in the box. If you bought yours second hand it may have the similar error. The used 450 I had was locked up due to castor oil siezing the engines components . This occurs when the 450 (or any engine) has sat for years with castor in them. This for sure is one reason Saito tells you to run 100% synthetic. A castor fuel is ok during the flying season but only synthetic should be run later before putting it a way for storage. One additional note for Saito 450r users.Do not remove the choke assembly. I believe it helps cause turbulance which better mixes the fuel and aids in fuel draw. When I removed the choke components the needle valve had to be turned out to over 5 turns and would never tune correctly. If there is one thing I have learned tearing these radials down, is I will never again second guess Saito engineers.

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
Well I'm glad you're cub got delivered without any damage. I have had many planes that failed to arrive without a hole poked through the boxes. I had to laugh about the spousal shock syndrome. I still have my original box stored in the closet, it is huge. WEll that is good to know that that cowl will fit the fuselage. It gives an additional option to those that wish to give it a bit better scale outline. You're DA 112 is going to be a lot of power for the cub plus it is a light engine. I am eager to hear how your build turns out. I'm especially interested in how you're going to drive the elevators that long of distance. I have not flown my for several weeks now, for some reason this hot summer has really slowed me down. But I will get it out for sure when we finally get a break with some cooler temperatures.

You got a great deal on the cub. When you start your build go ahead and take some pictures. The nice thing about the Nitro planes cub is it actually can get built within one person's lifetime! I have followed several cub builds and find most of them if not all died out long before the airplane is finished. I am happy to see that Nitro planes has continued to carry this aircraft. I still fly mine and it sure has a great presence in the air. It also flies nice. Good luck on your build and let us know how it goes.

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
I have not flown my cub for a few weeks now. As I have stated in several previous posts, the cub flies like a dream. On landing I usually leave a little bit of throttle on until I just cross the threshold of the runway. The cub lands nicely but I would not say that it floats. In conditions where you might have a 10 mile an hour headwind the cub will slow down very nicely. Under no wind or let's say a bit of a crosswind it lands very nicely, very realistic in my estimation. This is still a 30 pound plus model and has to be flown in. I am a little surprised that there has not been more people building and posting comments here. I'm sure Nitro planes is selling them since they always seem to be on backorder. Still a great value for the money and goes together fairly quickly.

Mine is still flying well. My understanding is the 60 size LADO do not hold up. I installed Robarts and I have not had a problem. I was sorry to see Hobby People drop the Corsair but their price was high. Good plane bad distributor. Hopefully a company like Horizon will pick it up (aka Seagull Models). Enjoy your build, its a great warbird.

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
Very good. Hopefully UPS will treat it well on its first cross country journey. It made it across the ocean Ok but United Package Smashers will be its most dangerous adventure to date. I have made a new and very simple mod to mine. The wing struts bolt to the bottom of the fuselage with a 3mm screw. Last time out I had a heck of a time getting that threaded into the blind nut up in the fuselage. A simple solution is to run a bolt in from the top and locktite it in so that approximately .5" sticks out the bottom of the fuselage. Now you have an easy to locate stud sticking out that will attach the bottom wing strut with a shakeproof nylon insert 3mm nut. (nut driver sold seperatley)! Have fun with your new Cub...

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
I got 2 flights in on the Cub today. I am still very happy I got this Giant. As I get more experienced with it I tend to play with some aerobatics. It rolls great. Loops look good. Inverted flight is no problem, and does the best stall turns (hammer heads) of all my planes. Since I do not compete, taking this to a scale competition is something I would not consider. The cowl is out of scale due to its length. The length of the front of the cowl should be about 12 inches ahead of the front of the windshield. The Nitroplanes Cub is 15 inches. The real cub cowl has a single hole in the front for the oil cooler. The Nitroplanes Cub has 2 holes side by side for engine cooling. I understand this is out of scale but makes the installation and balancing(CG) With the recommended twin cylinder engine much easier. I repainted the cowl white and added some white monokote trim to the front. It now looks much closer to Hazel Sigs clipped wing. Love to hear from anyone else that has put one of these in the air. Please post your experiences too!

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
I did some measuring on my cowl. If you look at the black engine & exhaust molding, its 4 inches long. The distance from the back of the false engine to the rear of the cowl is an additional 8 inches. I think in the video with the da50 power he may of cut an inch off the back end of the cowl. BTW the cowl can overlap the front of the fuselage by 1.25" From what I can tell at least 2 inches or more could be cut off the rear of the cowl and it will still fit on the fuse because it simply does not taper until you are 4" from the end. Another thing he did was to blacken the windows. I believe that helps make thing look shorter. All that being said, I have a pretty heavy motor in mine. Its a Zenoah GT80 with the steel mufflers. Believe it or not the plane balanced right on the CG. If the firewall was shorter I would of been adding lead up front. Fly Models specified a 100c twin. The longer cowl is needed to fit the bigger motors in. I have a 1lb or more puppet in mine right ahead of the cg. The video shows a 50cc Da engine. It flew it nicely. My GT80 was running pretty rich and it flew it very well. As I have said before 4.5 - 5.5 hp is enough power for this cub. I still have yet to weigh mine but with the heavy motor and a pound plus pilot, lots of epoxy reinforcement, 2 batteries and a 12 foot wing weight is not an issue. I painted the cowl and added some white trim. For $300 this thing flys great and its presence in the air is impressive too. You won't regret it.. Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
I just got this monster in house last week and thought it deserved its own thread. The plane is manufactured by Fly Models in China [link]http://www.fly-model.com/Html/Product_234.html[/link] and sold in the US by Nitroplanes [link]http://www.nitroplanes.com/90a234b-j3-cub-100cc-blue.html[/link]. The Cub actually has a wingspan of about 12 foot. (Nitroplanes advertises it at 10 foot ). It is available in classic Cub Yellow or Sky Blue /White Sunburst. It features plug in wings and elevators, a descent fiber glass cowl and fair hardware. As it seems with most of the Chinese ARFs the covering and cowl paint is excellent. I will snap some photos for the next posts. Here is a YouTube I found of the Cub. I believe it is using a Da50 for power. Inching closer to the maiden flight [;)] A note about locking the wing to the aluminum spar. There are 2 holes located 5 1/2" from the root and centered over the front and rear spar. Inside the wing Fly Models buried a 3mm blind nut at the end of these holes. So after slipping the wing onto the spar simply tighten the 3mm bolt which will clamp into the spar like a set screw. Clever idea. I hope it works! The 3mm cap screw is not included in the kit.

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
The engine is mounted the tank is plumbed and glued in. I brushed a coat of finishing resin on the engine box for fuel proofing. They did a good job keying in the plywood pieces of the motorbox and i found little reinforcing was necessary. I did add a hardwood block to each side for the heck of it. Bad habits are hard to break. The picture shows the tank placement and a couple of Futaba s3004 standard servos working the choke and throttle of the Zenoah GT80. I just had to pull the pins holding the front of the wing on. Boy am I glad i did!. In the picture you can see what a miserable job they did here. The 1inch long dowl rod was only in the wing of a 30lb plane by 1/2 of an inch. This got replaced by 1 3/4 long by 3/8 od steel tube from Aircraft Spruce. I am also pouring thinned epoxy (3oz or so) into the center wing section to make sure everything is bonded. It takes a while but is quicker than tearing all the covering and sheeting off the center section. Shining a powerful flashlight into the fiberglass wing tube will light up the inside . You can peer into the center hole and see inside pretty good.

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
So far about the only fault with the ARF I have found is the elevator servo cutouts. These are placed exactly opposite of each other. Since the fuselage narrows a lot at the end,the bottom of the servos interfere with each other. Maybe if low profile servos are used there would not be an issue but my servos required 1/4" plywood spaces glued to the side of the fuselage to set them out far enough to not interfere. Not a big deal but i did waste a lot of time trying to move them for and aft with no real improvement in clearance. Not to mention a lot more time repairing the holes left over. . The 2 remaining pushrods will need careful trimming to fit just right. The last 31mm of each end of the 140mm pushrod is threaded. The plastic pushrod ends will only accept 17mm of rod before jamming and breaking. So a lot of trial and error may be required in cutting the rods. Just don't cut the rods too short!..

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
The big Cub is really coming along. The servos arrived and its time to hook them up. The Arf comes with most of the necessary hardware. The red anodized extension arms are attached to circular plastic servo arms with 2-56 bolts and locknuts that are not provided. There are 4 pushrods 140mm long by 3mm dia. All the rods had to be shortened to work. Starting with the ailerons 2 rods were shortened to 128mm by cutting 6mm off each end. The 2 longest of the 4mm bolts are used on the ailerons. A hole is drilled 18mm in and 21mm from the rear of the mounting block in the aileron. These are just rough measurements and your placement could vary and it is shown here as a starting point only.

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
Well I think there are many motor options available for the Cub. In the Videos above it flew great on a 50cc gasser. The dle110s are selling for under $600 which has really depressed the market on the older 70 - 80 cc twins. I bet the Saito 300 would fly it scale like and have a really cool sound. It would most likely drink a lot of glow fuel too. I like the twins because they are suppose to be easy on the airframes (less vibration). I decided on a middle of the road engine for power. An 80cc twin. Although I put some time into the Cub today not much got done. The stock mufflers on the GT80 are not going to fit inside the cowl. I did order a set of DLE111 smoke mufflers from China. So unless I can bum a set from my buddy it will be a couple of weeks for the maiden unless I fly without the cowl.. Couple of pics. The dashboard is a decal I printed today. It is 9"wide by 3" high. I fitted the center wing section on the plane and drilled the mounting holes. Finally I slid the right wing panel on the cub. It looks great. trouble is my work room is not big enough to put the left panel on.[;)] So far putting this ARF together has been a cake walk.

Moving to the opposite end of the aircraft its time to see if I can stuff this GT80 into the cowl. This is still a trial fit but its looking like go at throttle up. I did add a 1/4 ply plate to the firewall to bring the engine a bit further forward. The cowl was cut to allow the cylinder heads and plugs to stick out. I think it will look Ok. I do plan on painting the very top fins black and converting the GT80 fron 14mm sparkplugs to the smaller 10mm CM6's with the brass inserts available from some of the internet vendors. The big plugs just didn't look right.

RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
I worked on the tail section some more. I glued in an additional carbon fiber rod inside the stock aluminum spar rod. It made it much stiffer but i'm thinking it was unnecessary. A great amount of strength is achieved by the flying wires attached between the top of the vertical fin and the stabilizer. I thought it was odd that no mention of these wires even exists in the manual so I will try and go into some additional detail here. There are holes predrilled (4 of them) in the vertical fin, the stabilizer and the bottom rear of the fuselage. A 3mm bolt passes through these holes and attach the 8 angled aluminum brackets included in the ARF. There should be two 24" pieces of wire cable left over from the rudder pull-pull installation. This wire is used as the flying wires for the tail. One small problem has arisen. There is not enough wire, clevises or threaded couplers to do the bottom rigging. Seems Fly models forgot to include these parts or possibly I misplaced them. Hopefully I can find some stuff in my junk box to finish the tail rigging without buying a pull - pull kit.. It appears Fly Models has eliminated the front stabilizer spar. The short aluminum tube was not in my kit but instead wooden dowels were glued in as anti rotation pins. If you choose the wooden pins were easily removed with some pliers on my stabs. A short carbon fiber or 5/16 od aluminum spar can be fashoned as was originally designed.

Here are some pics of the pull - pull rudder. This is using only the stock hardware supplied. Both wire coils are needed. A coil for each side. I assume the left over pieces are used to guy the elevator to the rudder. This is my 4th or 5th pull - pull setup so installation was pretty straight forward. I may be going overboard on the pictures / steps but I figure some modelers may be new even to ARF building.

When I fist saw the 4 foot wing struts and the apparent copper strap attachment method I thought this is way too Mickey Mouse. I had to do a trial fit and to my surprise it really is not a bad setup. I have no idea how well the copper straps will hold up but I'm willing to give it a try. It also looks like these wing struts will stay on the wing to make field assembly faster. I believe the wing panels will fit ok in the minivan with the struts attached. The final adjustment on exactly where the middle strut supports go will be made after the wing assembly is attached to the fuselage. I did order some new servos for the Cub. I really like these re badged Turnegy 620 hs metal geared digitals from HK. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9441 Although the arms are plastic they have a metal band supporting the splined shafts output. RE: Nitroplanes Giant 1/3 Scale Cub
I got the Rudder and Vertical Fin hinged and glued in place. Very simple and straight forward. There is a slot cut in the plywood sides for the pull-pull wires to exit and 2 servo cutouts for the elevator. In addition there is an access hatch cut out for that "square-ish " looking plywood piece included in the hardware bag. A good flashlight shining through the side will light up the opposite side of the blue covering in the rear and you will easily see all the cutouts provided. I cut the ChinaKote covering the window frames out today. I used a mini butane torch and a X-Acto blade to neatly cut the covering. Heat the x-acto blade red hot and it does a great job cutting/melting the covering. Save the cutouts for some patching material later on down the road. I trial fitted the vacuum formed side windows and the fit was pretty darn good. A+ for Fly models. The front glazing was a different story. The width of the winshield at the very top was formed too narrow and would not properly fit (the last picture trys to show the problem area). My only solution was to tape down one side and carefully heat the other side (top) with a MonoKote heat gun and reform the bend. The first picture shows the bottom of the wing at the root where there are 2 screw locations that will tap into the front and rear aluminum spars to prevent the wing from separating from the center section.

Here are a few pictures of the fuselage. Lots of stick construction balsa and ply. The windows are presently still covered over by the ChinaKote. I have hinged the ailerons and elevators. They supplied the large Robart style hinge points. I am happy to report the holes drilled for the hinges were spot on, centered and aligned. I have secured a Zenoah GT-80 twin gasser for the Cub. The rudder is controlled by a pull pull wire. The elevators have a servo mounted in the tail x 2 . I am going to reinforce the aluminum stabilizer spar by adding an internal sleeve of carbon fiber. The stock spar seems too soft. The main aluminum wingspar looks very sturdy. The stock tires are 4.25" in diameter. Dubro sells a tire that is for a 1/3 scale Cub at 5.6". The supplied tires are cheapie foam but are usable.
