RE: Top Flite AT6 ARF
Sorry to hear about you AT-6..... The retract boxes will fit in all Top Flite warbirds of this size. They have the same plastic boxes. The P-51 and P-47 just don't bounce like the AT-6 but a hard landing will crack the boxes. Good luck and Enjoy.

All you AT-6 & Warbird pilots from Maryland and Virginia. My club Colonial Virginia Aeromodelers will be hosting Warbirds Over Williamsburg, WOW-IV, on June 2, 2012. You can see our flyer on our website. http://cvarc.homestead.com/Index.html It would be great to have several AT-6"s in a formation. Happy Easter

RE: Top Flite AT6 ARF
I have 12 planes and over 4500 flights and have never needed or used an onboard glow. One problem I've seen with them is when you are are slowing down to land the glow kicks in and the idle speed picks up???? Not a good thing on a warbird without flaps! I have a Sullivan remote glow on all my Warbirds and most 4-strokes under a cowl.

Yes, the retarct boxes are still available and the fit all three Top Flite Warbirds. The AT-6, P-51 and P-47, although the AT-6 seem to have the most need due to the forward rake springy gear. They are $36.00 including shipping and instructions. Just email or PM me and we can set up payment and shipping. I take PayPal or MO. The AT-6 and a great looking and flying warbird. Thanks to the gear boxes landing aren't a problem anymore. I have 110 landings since the mod.[:)]

RE: Top Flite AT6 ARF
9r9r, Yes I am still selling the retract reinforcement boxes for the Top Flite 60 size Warbirds. The are still $36.00 a set, shipped. I checked the online manual and the retract mechanism is metal like the Hanger 9 Hellcat. I have the Hanger 9 Hellcat and the retract housings are metal. The whole assembly is $24.00 so I replace them every 150 landings. I did not see an option to buy replacement retracts on the parts list? The landing gear wire looks similar and has the same forward rake so it may bounce like the Top Flite?? However, the Seagull AT-6 does not have flaps and is about $120.00 cheaper? I have a Seagull Edge with 700 flights. It's the best value in ARF's. Thanks

RE: Top Flite AT-6 retract box failure.
I have had some slight bending if I bounce it hard. The boxes hold up fine but I carry two pair of pliars to bend the wire back ( it's always the left one??? It may be weaker?) It take about 10 seconds. It may be because I'm still using the original wires that bent when the gear boxes cracked?? Anyway, I haven't had to bend one for months. The 5mm wire seems soft??? But it beats $150.00+ Robarts. I now have over 120 landings with the boxes.....no problems.

I added 1 1/4 oz on the tail. ( 2 & 1/2 7Gm weights on each side of the tail as far back as possible). It fly's inverted with just light down pressure on the elevator.

Rick, What products did you use to spray the Ultracote?? You just say: clear flat?? I have some Top Flite Clear flat fuel proof spray that I have tested on an old broken fuselage. I cleaned the surface with acetone before spraying.. After it dried it looks OK. I want to set it in the sun today to see if the heat and expansion bother the coating?? Thanks

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
If the CA hinges are breaking they probably had too much CA applied. Also, there may not have had a small hole drilled in the center of the hinge slot to allow the CA to wick into the wood and hinge?? I prefer pivot points and since they come in 3 sizes they should fit most wings. Flying at about 50 to 60% throttle, which is all I need, I get over 12 minutes on the stock tank.

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
If you have to use CA hinges, Radio South CA hinges are the best. Tower Hobbies sell them. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDZ44&P=ML I used a Bison pitts muffler, http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX8680&P=ML , on my OS 55. Look at post #82. The OS 55 runs well with this muffler. No need to block any holes. I also used silicone exhaust deflectors on the pipes since I had shortened mine on a previouse model. So I needed these to extend below the fuselage. I like the silicone tubes extending below the fuselage rather the the aluminum pipes which snap off in a crash[:o] http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXL378&P=ML

Good move, going to pivot points. I'll never use CA hinges again. I've had them break and come loose on several planes, especially the rudder and elevators on my big acrobatic birds. I have had to re-iron the cheap covering on my Spot On severay times. I have painted all the pointed ends and small edges with clear "dope". This has helped.

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
I would love to add a WW I biplane to my warbird hanger. I really like the Hanger 9 Camel. It's the right size, a little bigger than a Balsa USA 1/6 and smaller than the 1/4 scale. So it would fit in my van without having to attach the wings each time. However I do not like the shinny Covering[:'(] Has any on kit-bashed their Camel with another covering option or is there a paint that will cover this shinny Ultracote??? Thanks

Nice high speed flying. 5 1/4 minutes of speed flying and not a single pattern sequence???? It does show how stable the Spot On is and how easy it is to land. Why not buy a racer???

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
I have over 4,000 flights on my planes and only used an inline fuel filter one day on my Ultimate with a Saito 180. After 3 deadsticks I threw it away. I have a filtered clunk and filtered nozel on my fuel bottle that I clean each time I open a new bottle. No problems. Last week a pilot at our field had installed a Sullivan inline on his DA 100 /Giles. and it was sputtering. It was sucking air around the line. He threw it away also. I have noticed when doing and outside loop with all my Saito's I throttle back about 50%. It seems to take some strain off of the engine????? Never had a stall this way.

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
Flhyr. Are you sure you want a pattern plane? If you're not into pure pattern flying and or also want to do 3D you may want an Extra or Edge?? The Seagull's are great buys. The Edge or Extra will do some nice patterns but not as precise at the Venus, Spot On or Focus Sport. Of course the pattern ships will not do a lot of the 3D stuff as well. There is no plane that will do both very well. You need to decide what's the primary purpose of the plane. If you want wild and crazy 3D, buy a MoJo.

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
If I hade put a 4-stroke in mine it would be inverted and the70 is plenty of engine. 4-stroke don't mind being inverted, in fact I have four 4-strokes inverted in my A/C. 2-Strolkes are a different story. I did that once in a Venus 40. A nightmare. With the inverted 70 there will be very little cowl cutting. It will look and fly great. The "N" version has the aileron servos burried in the wing and the belly-pan is not attached to the wing. Other than that, no difference. I thaught I was getting the "N" when I ordered it but received the "A". I was going exchange it till I checked my model. The wings and fuselage were in such perfect condition I kept it.

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
No. It will roll a little right if the elevator throw is excessive because it will stall the airframe. You don't want to be doing high speed snaps with a pattern plane. If you want to do wild 3D buy a MoJo.

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
I have the OS 55 also with a 12x6 prop and you will be more concerned with running out of runway on landing than getting too slow and stalling. With the 12x8 I had to kill the engine to land it. Pattern planes have very little wind resistance so they will come in fast. The Spot On, like most pattern planes, is very stable and very easy to glide in for a smooth landing. Just don't force it down and bounce it. Three wheel landings are quite routine. I have found that my pattern planes are the easiest to land.

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
If the Spot On is balanced both ways ( fore and aft as well as laterally) as mine is, I can't get it to drop a wing in a stall. To do a three turn spin from a stall I have to bump the rudder to drop a wing to beginn the spins. In fact in a hammerhead it will fall backward if I don't use a lot of rudder and bump the throttle. At high speeds the rolls are very axial. This is a very stable airframe for it's size. One of the best available in this size.

The gear wire is soft and very easy to bend back. Replace the cheap foam wheels with Dubro 3" lite rubber wheels. Get the reinforcement boxes before the retract box's break. You have to fly this plane onto the runway.

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
Sound like you have a winner. If you have enough speed to do all the maneuvers. I reduced the prop on mine from 12x8 to 12x6 and it helped with the landing speed. Maybe a 13x6??? I have heard that some of the big pattern flyers will cut the engine on final to slow it down for landing??? Ask Don or Humberto?? I really like the supplied aluminum landing gear. It's the strongest gear set I have ever seen on a ARF. I just replaced the screws with socket heads with lock washers. They have never come loose. I used some clear dope to cover all the coating tips and seams. This is poor covering and it will come loose of not secured, especially on the bottom when fuel get on it. The only maintainence I have with my plane after 60 flights it re-ironing the covering[&o]. Enjoy this fun A/C.

RE: Spot On 50 Build log.
I have 2 OS-55's and they both ran poorly at mid throttle untill I leaned the low speed needle about 1/2 turn. After you get the high speed set then adjust the low speed till the engine runs smoothly at low and mid throttle. I have seen this on at least five other OS-55's. I am actually using a 12/6 on the Spot On and 11x7 on the other plane. Both APC props. Sorry about the crash[&o]. At $149.00 it's probably cheaper to replace than rebuild[:o]? It's a great flying plane. Good luck.
