Solidworks told you what is wrong. You have open sketch and need to close it. Look at the pictures, you can't extrude sketch if it is not trimmed. I've put problem in red circle...(now I see that second circle is black[8|])

It looks fantastic although I have one question, I am not sure why that first, how do you call it, fuse former, has to have lightening holes done in that way, it seems complex. Can it be done using fewer holes but arranged as some elliptical pattern? As I said just a question. Keep up great work[sm=thumbup.gif]
ORIGINAL: canadagoose Thanks NRistow ,Tommee and Dickeybird, i know what you mean about using revolve to make a round cowl. I used that alot playing with Pro/E in making a model engine, but this cowl isn't symetrical . I think i get the picture on how to do lofting. Does it end up being a solid that needs to be shelled after? I'm using TurboCad 9 Professional that bought on Ebay

You definitely need to use a loft if it is not symmetric. Define few cross sections and loft between them. What software are you using? (It looks like a solidworks render to me). OK, I get it, it is not solidworks it is TC...

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
I'm using Solidworks versions 2003, 2005, 2006, but most of my work is done in 2003. Since I am going to university of mechanical engineering and naval architecture (specializing in mechatronic and robotics) I have all of software available, for free of course, but I know that license for Solidworks costs a small fortune. John, there is only one hobby store in my country, and I haven't had any nitro engine bigger than 20cc in my hands, so I can only dream about DA 50. BUT if you have measurements of that engine I would draw it for you, it would come in handy for my future virtual projects. Have searched DA website but data available is not enough for me to make 3d replica.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
ORIGINAL: SydDythers I would hazard a guess that it is one and the same but I couldn't be sure Brent. In the "too much time on my hands" department, I've been experimenting with Solidworks as a platform for my next design. I managed to create a Hitec 5955 servo with my efforts. The servo arm actually spins around on the servo body. When the time comes, I can install the servo in the design, attach the linkage between the control surface and the servo and actually operate the control surface by spinning the servo arm. The advantage is to check for any binding or interference and, of course, it's really cool :D Cheers, John
this is mine HITEC servo, yeah too much time...btw there is much better software for making animations and other stuff, I use NASTRAN, you can directly load model from solidworks and even save animation as video file. Oh, now I remember newer versions of solid have possibility to create animatons... Forgot to told you, what a fantastic plane have you designed...[sm=thumbup.gif]

RE: 3D CAD Need suggestions!
ORIGINAL: dr_wogz Stick with 2D. 3D just gets complicated, and you'll soon be back to 2D for your plans...
...for me, not true at all...3d is more easy then designing a plane in 2d. And remember that after 3d model is build you get 2d views in a second. Just click a button and you have it. I am using solidworks for 3 years now and would recommend it also proengineer and maybe the best Catia...but as others said they are very expensive and for many overkill...for many overkill...some pics...

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
John, since your plane looks so great, really professionally designed I think you should make some profit from it. Yeah, I know RC is about sharing and stuff like that but if you give your plans away, especially in dxf or dwg format someone will SURELY use it to make profit. Don't let that happen, build your plane according to those plans and if everything looks fine, you can print your plans use some copyright on it, and you can cut kits and sell them. I plan to do that with mine cause it is the only way for me to pay for my hobby. Really, there are thousands of people willing to build machine like your plane and not just buy way overpriced arfs. And thanks for having me in mind...i would really like to build that plane, it would be my first 3d machine...just continue great work...

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Here is a fast way of defining ribs for a wing (just an example, it can be anything else). Pic 1. Create first and last rib and define exact length between them (if it is not tapered than almost all steps can be skipped). Pic 2. Then loft it into a full 3d body. This is a place to start from. ( Note that process that I have used for this example is very, lets say, primitive but don't doubt it. I could use something more complicated but no one would get idea how it works. Results that you will get are exact what you would get if using some complicated solidworks commands.) Pic 3. Reference geometry, insert planes where you want your ribs to be. Define length between planes and number of planes. Pic 4. Go into a top view. Pic 5. In top view, draw a sketch on part of wing you would like to cut-extrude. Pic 6. Cut-extrude it. Pic 7. Wing cut-extruded exactly where you want a rib to be, at plane 2. Pic 8. Select plane 2 and go into a front view. Pic 9. Select a face of model at plane 2. Then convert entities. It is now sketch of a new rib at wanted position. Copy sketch. Select it with mouse and hit ctrl+c. Pic 10. Go to new sketch select view (for example front) and hit ctrl+v. You have now sketch of wanted rib. Pic 11. Extrude your rib for assembly of the wing. Repeat process for other ribs. Note: this is only for tapered wings. This sketch can directly be saved as dxf or dwg and cnc cut. Viola you have cut your ribs and can start gluing.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
ORIGINAL: paf Hi, I see some of you have very nice results from Solidworks. I'm currently learning CAD software and started designing an Extra 300 I'm wondering how you split up your project - let's say a wing - do you start with a lofted surface and work your way down, or do you build it up from a spar up ? Do you create assembly with individual ribs etc, or do you keep it as a multibody part ? I don't know what's the best practice and would like to know what other people are doing. Thanks, Paul
Paul, lets start with wing, if it is not tapered then I would just draw 2d sketch of the rib. After that go to assembly and build a wing. Note that we are talking about solidworks or catia, for me acad is impossible to do that properly nor it is used for that. If, like in your case, we have tapered wing then i would draw first and last rib and loft a model of the wing. After 3d model is lofted it is necessary to insert planes parallel to the first or the last rib. Of course planes must be on exactly where ribs will be. After planes are placed, select each plane and just click convert entity and you have finished ribs. And once again each part of the plane is build as assembly. Typically I have assembly of the wing, tail and fuse, and each assembly is build from INDIVIDUAL parts just like a real model.

RE: Tips And Tricks for CAD Programs.
Still, I think, the easiest way is to do a 3D model, with parts drawn in 3d individually and then assembled into a full model. Then, every part can directly be saved as dxf or dwg and cnc cut.

Actually so brilliant so I made few… also I drawn 3D assembly of the stand using solidworks…If you need files just pm me…I could make exploded view and stuff so it would be easier to make stands than just looking into 2D sketch… pictures…

RE: Please help me choose
I know 9C is better but it is simply out of my budget. Notice that I am from Croatia, 9C is (tx ONLY) 580$, and 9C (tx, rx, and ni-cd) is 830$, but those three mentioned are quite expensive too, so I need to make wise choice. I saved that money very long and don't want to just pick whichever radio but the best for my applications (of course out of those 3)[:o]

Please help me choose
Hi! I need to buy new radio, for planes. I am starting in 3D probably with Burrito or similar stuff and after flying trainers with some cheap radio I need something better. Radios available to me are 1. Futaba FF7 (7C) 2. Airtronics RD 8000 3. Hitec Eclypse As I said I will use it mostly for 3D so please can you help? I was looking at RD 8000 but it has dual rates only for ailerons and elevator. I dont know is that enough. What would you choose? Thanks.[:)]
