RE: electric boat part HELP
I was just trying to point Darren to a nearby group/boat club where he can get on-the-spot help.I don't study the social habits of underclasses. To answer your original question, you have to use steering whether steerable drive or rudder.Tank steering at high power is too dicey.I know that much.I saw several of those 1/12 scale racers parked, never used, in the clubhouse of one of the above clubs, but was told they really need I.C. To answer your follow up about part sources, you would be better asking in one of the three racing boat sections.

You missed out hydride cells,Robert. They show a considerable weight saving over Pb. By the way folks,if you don't follow the manufacturer's guide, other battery types will loose capacity too.I'm soldiering on with a set of 600maH nicd that last an hourin a transmitter[:D]

RE: Smoked motor - suitable replacement?
ORIGINAL: anders_r_r Is there any reason why not to use a gearbox?
Yes there is a reason. You can increase your output power and reduce the heat simply by putting on the 28 mm prop. The maximum power you get on six volts is (0.7A + 25A) x 6.0/2 @ 9,000 rpm To put it plainly, you want to get your rpm back up above 9,000 rpm at 6 volt or 10,800 rpm at 7,2 volt
Specification Nominal voltage 6V Operating voltage range 2.4-7.2V No-load rpm 18000 No-load current drain 0.7A Current drain at max. efficiency 4 A Current drain when stalled 25A Max. efficiency without gearbox 70% Length of case, excl. shaft 37.8mm Diameter 27.7mm Free shaft length 13.8mm Shaft diameter 2.3mm Part No: G3321
RE: Smoked motor - suitable replacement?
Anders,at least get yourself an aircraft [link=http://www.r2hobbies.com/proddetail.php?prod=rcps51601]€2,21 speed controller[/link] and you can overpower the motor for short periods. These motors don't have a fixed voltage rating carved in stone because there is more than one factor that causes the unwanted heat. If you do a test like rcshipyard describes, according to the Graupner figures, use a prop at 15 amp for maximum power and 5 amp for maximum efficiency(70%) on 7,2. You get a longer duration with the smaller prop at 70% efficiency over 50% with the larger prop but that one gives you maximum thrust to do the aquabatics in the photographs.

RE: WD40 Good or evil? opinions wanted
I misread your "it" to mean the bearing. Some sort of seal. There is no silicone in WD40.I wouldn't like it on my battery contacts. The popcorn result was when a piston was sprayed with WD40 instead of silicone or ptfe lubricant.

RE: WD40 Good or evil? opinions wanted
Oh,add WD40 to non oil resistant silicone rubber o-rings to make popcorn. The bearing salesman was right. I haven't seen WD40 damage a circuit board.Diy caulking corrodes solder and eats right through circuit board copper tracks in 36 hours.
ORIGINAL: Ron Olson ........I've heard of people using it (WD40) on their electronics........I'll stay with my bottle of Aero-Plate for that. [sm=thumbs_down.gif] thumbs down to WD40 on electronics. You'll just have to trust me on that but if you have a voltage scope or a sensitive electronic circuit that controls servos you have the means.

RE: running time
Rye,the email alert I got from the last post has prompted me to look at the esc size thread again. I thought at that time(two months has passed) the logical solution would be to put the 900 motors in the cruiser and the 700bb motors in the pt boat.I didn't mention that at that time as you were reluctant to remove the motors. There is,however,a problem with that :- as I looked through the rcgroups forum at your posts. You must be adding ten pouns of lead shot to all your models. Jan's suggestion of replacing lead acid batteries with nicd packs could be done on the pt boat. With 700 motors and small props it could cruise rather than stroll along. If it weighs us much as the other models, however, thatt would be like throwing the proverbial deck chairs off the Titanic. Your memory must is worse than mine.Over the course of a year there have been....well.....quite a few rcgroups posts telling you to use smaller props on the 700 motors over a year.[:D]

RE: running time
ORIGINAL: Habaneroe I'm willing to give rye the benefit of the doubt.I have the same problem with one of my runabouts. It's like my EDF jet, it looks and glides fantastic for a few passes and then it's dead stick time. Some gave me the same advice as you but the chump who built it for some reason fused/glued the prop onto the shaft, so to "simply" change all that is (I feel) more trouble than it is worth.Maybe he's just looking for a second opinion.
"give rye the benefit of the doubt" I don't think it's the builder at fault here it's the motor being overloaded by the size of prop.End of story. Jan said try smaller props.I agree with his suggestion with some emphasis. What do you think he should do for longer sail duration?
ORIGINAL: pilotj Thanks for feedback, makes sense. What do you suggest is a optimal RPM for a prop that is 2-4" diameter? Thanks
Power = a constant x RPM x Prop load so to answer your question you could give us an idea of the size/shape and speed of the boat and a power figure could be arrived at. 150-200 Watts is a lot of power for a boat Tony Fitzpatrick

Jan,the esc is short circuit protected and will stop with a single 700bb connected. All you need to disprove that is a reel of cable with the correct gauge to make a resistor that will draw a 700 stall current and a 12 volt bulb. Tony

You can see the incremental steps on ordinary analog servo if you try to move them slowly. The common setting idles the motor if the horn is within 1 degree of its commanded position.
