RE: DA100 deadsticked today-first time ever
Thousands upon thousands of planes flew with 4.8 volt NiCads before A123 and LiPo's were in vogue, just a little heavier. I would use it in a heart beat if the weight is not a concern.

RE: here we go again quadra 75
I would try to vent the diaphragm if possible. Can you push it down through the vent hole with a small allen wrench? I have had air trapped between the fuel pump and level operated valve and all the flipping and choking would not get fuel into the engine. I suspect this problem was caused by a higher than normal pop off pressure. Once wet it worked well however.

Since there are many unknows here I dry fit the engine box together and held with #2 servo screws. It took minor sanding to get everything together. The box is also held in with servo screws.

RE: Water bottle fuel tanks, post your sources here, please.
I drilled the cap to 5/8" or so just enough to leave a small flange, cut a piece of .032" copper sheet to fit inside the cap, drilled 3 holes and soldered 5/32" K&S brass tubes on the copper sheet. All from the scrap box. Did buy Durbo 5/32" fuel barbs. No sealer, tighten the cap with Channelocks.

RE: Zenoah Gt80 w/EI-hard to start when hot
The photo above is the SDC 80 conversion with the stock carb sitting to the left. The stock motor exhibited all the problems you mentioned, was a bear to land, would finally get to idle speed once back at the flight line. The SDC 80 worked better. The motor is now replaced with a D&B 5.1.

RE: Fox 3.2 Help
It's hard to image the fuel system minus the carb causing the engine to run at 4000 rpm and not idle below 4000 rpm. AIr leak, missing gasket, loose case, crack carb insulator is where I would look.

RE: Zenoah Gt80 w/EI-hard to start when hot
I forgot to install the insulator between the carb and the manifold on my last build, that made the problem worse until I discovered the insulator in a storage box. Re-installing helped the problem somewhat, still on the hotest days the same problem existed.

RE: Home made header supplies???
Silver solder, the parts are fit to provide an overlap where possible. The joints are are much stronger when in shear. They make a flux for stainless that doesn't made the black stains but I have not tried it yet. One trick I did learn at the welding supply to clean the majority of the flux off is to imerse the part in a bucket of water as soon as the flux freezes, this mades clean up easier. I found the flux to be glass hard once it cooled. Glass bead blast works well also.

RE: FPE 2.4 Ridge Ignition
You really do have to wonder just how many dollars was saved using the fixed ignition? And as you point out it is clearly stated in the Q&A section of the web site. To be honest this was a great find of information, I always wanted to move the ignition advance with a servo mixed to throttle, now I know where to find a fixed ignition module.

RE: FPE 2.4 Ridge Ignition
www.dandbengines.com/ I believe this is the same supplied with the First Place Engines.. Ridge Machine produces the D&B. Update - Just when to the FPE site and discovered that that 2.4 is equipped with a fixed timing module set at 20 degrees. Must be special made because I didn't see the fixed unit listed on the D&B site, must be a cost savings thing. I retract my comments, any variable ignition will be an upgrade.

RE: FPE 2.4 Ridge Ignition
ORIGINAL: Truckracer
ORIGINAL: STUKA BARRY If you have any doubts, just replace the ignition with a bullet proof RCXcell ignition, its cheap insurance.
The older 2.4 FPE will thank you if you install a new ignition that has an advance curve. You simply can't go wrong with the RCexl as Stuka suggested! The engine will start easier, idle slower and have more top end power than when equipped with the Ridge ignition. The Ridge ignition had fixed timing that was a compromise between ease of starting and acceptable power output ..... so neither end of the performance spectrum was great. FPE had the CH ignition as an expensive option when the Ridge ignition was used. Though the CH is no longer available the RCexl is an excellent performing copy.
Can't speak for the FPE 2.4 ignition, but I would not trade the ignition in my D&B engine for any Rcexl, CH or DA unit.

RE: Evolution/MVVS 80cc Starting Backwards!
Check the timing, sounds like it is retarded, I don't know what ignition the MVVS uses but expect that it is a Valach similar to ZDZ. If that is the case 5 degrees before would be close.

RE: 3W75- Where to send for service
On new and rebuilt carbs it helps if you can push the diaphrgam down after the pump gets wet . This vents the air trapped between the pump check valve and the needle valve. I use a small ball driver. Only works on those carbs where the vent hole is on the flat surface.

RE: Webra Bully and Walbro carb help
ORIGINAL: captinjohn The lessor amount of spit-back is nothing to do with carb....its the new ring. The better seal you have with the Bowman piston ring, provides more induction vacum and when ring gets broke in all should get better. With the idle real slow of a RPM... a quick throttle hesitation on rev- up can happen on many engines. Also take it easy ...with wide open runs so soon. Hot weather and too lean a mixture can damage your engine. Short runs at first and let the engine cool down is much safer. Best Regards, Capt,n
Suggest the lesser amount of spit back is due to the velocity stack, and here like so many things in life, longer is usually better.

RE: Eneloop batteries for ignition?
ORIGINAL: apalsson
ORIGINAL: WRK Anyone using Eneloop batteries for ignition? Wonder how these work for Ign and also wondering if they are good enough for flight packs?
I use Eneloop packs almost exclusively on my ignitions. I like the long charge retention (>80% pr year) and they are easy to manage in low current draw situations. For 50cc and smaller, I also use them for flight packs but most of the time use two separate packs, each connected into separate ports on the receiver. I don't know the availability of them in the US but here in Australia, you can buy individual cells with solder lugs on them which makes it cheap and easy to make up your own packs. RE: Eneloop batteries for ignition?
I read somewhere that Sanyo sold their battery business, I expect it will move to China and these problems will increase in the future. Even the label on the Eneloop batteries are of high quality. I believe the new cells are 2500 ma capacity which I would expect result in lower discharge currents. I have two 6 volt flight packs, 1-4.8 volt ignition and 9.6 volt transmitter pack. I recently forgot to turn off the transmitter and the timer indicated 15 hours before the battery when dead. I like mine.
