RE: RCPRO Warbird Race in Tucson Dec 3, 2011
ORIGINAL: still4given Looks like electrics are here to stay. Great to have other options. Looking forward to getting the results so I can finish up the world points for the year.
Yes, 4 of the 17 entries were electric: 3 in Gold, 1 in Silver, using 3 different airframe/motor/battery combinations. The fellow in Silver ran a fairly conservative setup and it flew like a sport plane. I'm hoping to see more electric entries in the near future. The electric approach isn't easy or inexpensive by any means, but it certainly is a viable option for those who prefer electric power over glow or gas. E-power comes with it's own set of challenges, but nobody said this would be easy. One thing to note is that these high-powered electrics seem to be just as noisy as the unmuffled high-nitro 4-strokes. Instead of a low-pitched exhaust noise, they've got plenty of high-pitch prop noise.

RE: RCPRO Warbird Race in Tucson Dec 3, 2011
All in all it was a great race! Despite the dismal forecast, the weather actually held out JUST long enough to squeeze in 4 rounds. Mr. Flood and his YS-powered Stiletto turned a 1:31 in the first heat and never looked back, later turning a super-low 1:30 for fast time and winning First in Gold. Hats off to Chris Corbitt who broke in his new World VooDoo 10S electric by turning a 1:30 and securing 2nd place in Gold. Who'd have thought that 12.5 pounds could go that fast ;) It's now painfully obvious that there are at least TWO types of kryptonite for my particular electric combo: first wind, then cold. Throw in some thumbs that couldn't find the outside of the course, and I brought up the rear by a large margin. That Limited Edition motor is looking pretty tempting right now.......

RE: RCPRO Warbird Race in Tucson Dec 3, 2011
It's not looking great (we had snow @ 5300 ft ASL), but we're going down anyway. 20-50% chance of showers depending on which forecast you want to believe. We'll just race during the 50% when it's NOT raining ;)

Four successful maiden flights today: the twin to my electric B-model (for Tanner) and Chris's electric WM VooDoo (both for Gold), then Andy's electric Mustang and Jeff's YS-powered Phoenix Spitfire (both for Silver). Tucson, here we come [:D]

RE: RCPRO Warbird Race in Tucson Dec 3, 2011
Sounds like neither one of us will be getting any points ;) But hey, I'm used to NOT getting points (usually from cutting), And I don't need any more for this season, anyway. Junior will be trying out his electric B @ that race (identical to mine except that I didn't re-cover it). While he's sorting the new plane out, maybe he'll be slow enough to scoop up all the points [:D] Another way to look at it: if you're not racing me, you'll be stuck racing either Tanner or Chris (Chris is building a WM Mustang with more cells and a bigger motor). The Gold heats will sound like a herd of angry bees!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Two Day Warbird Race in Sacramento
ORIGINAL: MONGO44 I think RCPro should try the elimination of the wing chart.   Go for one year and see what happens.  If problems arise and there is huge issues, you can always go back.   I honestly dont see any problems.   We run head to head in our classes and we have big 2-strokes against big four strokes.   They are pretty close.
This is our 2nd season without the wing area tables, and it really doesn't seem to have changed a thing in terms of elapsed times. Most fast times are still in the mid-1:30s, nothing to write home about. In fact, one of (if not THE) fastest planes on the circuit (Verano's Stiletto) is still legal under the old (RCPRO) wing area tables. I suspect it's because he wants to be able to race under everyone's rules, but he's proven that you don't need a big motor on a small airplane to go VERY fast. We've seen some diversity in power systems (particularly electrics), but nothing that's caused any problems. We haven't seen any giant engines in smallish airframes. In most cases, people are still running the same stuff they had before we eliminated the tables. The breakout times seem to keep a lid on things for the most part; nobody's rewarded for going "too fast". You can still win any class with an ARF and stock powerplant. If it weren't for the breakout times, I believe we would NEED a wing area table or some other type of limiting factor. What I would REALLY like to see, though, is our (RCPRO) breakout times reduced by 5 seconds so we can run like the SAM guys do: 2:25/1:55/1:25. Any takers?

RE: RCPRO Warbird Race in Tucson Dec 3, 2011
........fairly familiar with SAM rules. You guys run more-scale airframes (good) and post faster elapsed times (also good). Just wanted to make sure that you know you'd be driving a long way just to take a step down and race at our level ;) Looking forward to racing with you guys again. You're always fiercely competitive, and that's why we drove all that way to run with you. Hope to see you in December!

Terry, Is there power at the field? I'd need a way to recharge my flight batteries, and the NRC won't let me cross the border with the normal reactor I use to power my charger ;) Tony
