RE: No wheelies?
How about the suspension? If the shocks & springs are stock and the spacers are removed the truck would sit really low. I think this would make it hard to pull the wheels unless the motor has enough power & tires are sticky???????? [sm=confused.gif] I only say that because my stock savage X (not w/ 4.6) pulls wheels all day so did my bro'n-laws stock savage25. -Mark Just noticed the "HPI Aluminum shocks" in the signature. RE: STS Engines
ORIGINAL: rcnitrohead Hey Mark your a great guy thanks for offering to send me a replacement clip but I got the damn thing out!!!!!!!!!!!![:D] Took me a freaking damn hour and a half though[:-] I was ready to stomp all over the damn backplate. I even bent my micro screwdriver while trying to lever it out! The clip itself is in good shape though. I did scratch up the base of the backplate a bit though[:o] Too late here to take pics but ill post up tommorow. Also, I spent 25 minutes trying remove the damn pullstart shaft! It wouldnt budge even after I lubed it up! I had to take heavy duty pliers and step on it while wiggling it out. It wasnt an easy task, in fact I kind of killed my back with it.[:@] The crappy part is that although I got it out, the damn thing scratched up the orange bushing inside of the backplate[:(] I swear, STS makes it impossible to service the starters on their D30M engines! Ive spent a total of 2 hours trying to get that clip out and nearly broke my driver! That thing isnt flexible at all[:'(] Then I couldnt remove the starter shaft for the life of me and when I finally did one of the grooves on the shaft scratched up the inside of the backplate bushing. Ah well.... It wont affect performance but there may be a bit more friction on the start shaft[&o][8|] Oh by the way, I havent bought a roto backplate yet, Im going to place an order from you next week for the roto start once all my ebay stuff sells out.[8D]
Sounds like you've had a hell of a time ... no worries it gets easier [:D] Let me know when you order the roto kit and I'll add the clips, new backplate & shaft. RE: STS Engines
ORIGINAL: rcnitrohead Yeah its that damn one! I tried doing it with a flathead last night and bent it a little bit but it just doesnt want to pop out. Ill try applying more pressure today but im telling you its really frustrating. The thing spins around and just doesnt want to come out of the groove. Who knew a piece of metal can be such a pain in the @$$.[8|] Its location greatly contributes to the difficulty of removing it since it is about 3/4 of a centimeter inside of the backplate[:'(][:(]
Oye! [sm=48_48.gif] If you do not have the proper tool you are going to bend or break it. If you have a spare clip with your roto-start conversion kit, go ahead and pop it out.
ORIGINAL: rcnitrohead Hey guys Im having a problem removing an E-clip from the pull start shaft. I need to take off the shaft in order to put the roto shaft in but I cant take the damn clip off[:o] The clip is lowered into the backplate so I cant lever it out and I dont have any pliers that are small enough to grab onto it. I was trying to get it out for half an our last night[:@] but to no avail[8|] Any tips on getting it out? Any help is greatly appreciated and may restrain me from chucking the backplate at a wall after my next attempt[:)] Here is a pic of the shaft for reference. It is the black shaft in the pic and the clip is inside of the backplate.
You mean this clip circled in red? I hate that one [:'(] A small flat head screw driver will do it. RE: STS Engines
ORIGINAL: rcnitrohead Ok guys, I got the chance to sit down and dissasemble my engine. Basically, I took off the head and backplate in order to clean out any metal that was left after the machining process and to seal the engine. The crankshaft looks top notch but the top of the piston has very small indentations and scratches. I took off the pullstart because I will be putting the rotostarter on next week. I do have a question for Mark though: Does the rotostart backplate come with the screws to attach it and does it come with the black shaft the goes into the backplate? I couldnt remove the black shaft so I thought I would wait until I ask you guys. I prepped my engine for bashing as you can see with zip ties and fuel tubing. After the pics were taken, I installed the flywheel and clutch and I dont know what gearing I should run. Should I run a 17 tooth or 18 tooth clutchbell? Im using a 49 tooth spur gear and two speed. I want mild wheelies but nothing crazy and good top speed. Here are some pics:
Yes the roto-conversion kit has everything you need. here's a picture of what the kit includes.. http://www.stsmicroengines.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=81 -Mark
ORIGINAL: jombo i pulled mine out to check them and a silver and one copper is .04mm, i dont see how it could possibly be .03mm. i dont have digital calipers just the ones with the lines on them so that may make a difference.
Jombo, you're off by a couple of hairs [;)] in the engine you should have 3 shims, a .1, .2 & .3mm (not .04mm as you stated). The manual says run .5mm for 30% nitro. So... you need to combine the .3 + .2 shims to total .5mm No need for a caliper, it is obvious that one shim is thin and other really thick... the .2mm will be the middle one [:D] Understand? -Mark

I am all for E-commerce, but every now and then it's nice to know you can talk to a live person.
99% of my communication with Mark is by email, which you can do from his site. I do understand what you are saying and will bring it to Mark’s attention. STS engines are not Mark’s main means of income and he has a full time job.
You know how it goes, it's all about overhead. If I have to pay someone to answer phones then I would have to bring prices up. I have no problem talking to people but I'm just not available all the time. This is why people like 46u, thunderbirdjunkie & kemo are always available to help. They are sponsored by STSmicroengines and have more knowledge in their little pinkie than I can ever know. When I answer customer emails a good percentage of the time I come to them for answers [:D] If someone buys something on our website and pay with paypal, they get my phone number. There are customers that call, some email me and ask me to call them and I do. Trust me when I tell you that if I had an 800 number available I most certainly make more engine sales. It is what it is guys but if someone feels the need to talk to me then just PM or email me and I will call you. -Mark
